AB  - The surface of a titanium-based alloy Ti6Al4V was subjected to modifications by a near-IR femtosecond Ti:Sapphire laser, emitting at 775 nm pulses of 200 fs duration, in single-pulse and multi-pulse regimes, with up to 400 accumulated pulses, and pulse energies ranging from 2.5 to 250 $$\upmu $$J. The whole range of induced effects is presented, from gentle ablation and pattern occurrence to substantial crater formation. Very observable laser-induced parallel periodic surface structures are reported, appearing both within the damage spot area, with low fluences, and at the peripheries of the craters, with higher fluences—but also on crater walls, and inside the crater structures. Damage threshold fluences $$({F}_{\mathrm{th}})$$and the incubation factor $$(\zeta )$$were also determined.

AB  - The aim of this study was to demonstrate the potential of Laser-Induced Breakdown Spectroscopy (LIBS) in the analysis of pottery shards, which are commonly the most abundant artefacts recovered at archaeological sites. The analytical capability of LIBS in identification of elements characteristic to inorganic pigments used for decoration was assessed. Based on the specific elements detected in the LIBS spectra of glazes, correlations between the elemental composition of the glaze and the colours of the glazed surface were established. The results were in accordance with the previously reported Energy Dispersive X-ray Fluorescence (EDXRF) and Raman analyses of some of the samples, and with the presently performed XRF analysis. Two important parameters for plasma characterization, temperature and electron number density, were estimated from the spectral data. A potential use of LIBS for depth profiling was also investigated by analysing the silicon to aluminium intensity ratio as a function of the number of laser shots applied. Profilometry analysis of the damages created on the glazed surfaces by laser shots was used to estimate the average ablation depth and ablated mass.

AB  - Results regarding morphological and compositional changes of bimetallic thin film (BMTF), composed of aluminium (Al) and titanium (Ti) nano-layers, by single fs laser pulses, are presented. Laser irradiation was conducted in the air with focused, linearly polarized laser pulses, the duration being 300 fs, wavelength 515 nm, and pulse energy up to 1.2μJ. Effects of the variations of the pulse energy on the changes were studied. In the experiment, single pulse energy values from 0.03 to 0.08 μ J caused ablation–photomechanical spallation of the upper part of BMTF layer from the Si substrate, without ablation of the whole film. Irradiation at higher pulse energies gradually removed the whole BMTF and even a part of the Si substrate. We explained the influence of different electron–phonon dynamics, in the case of multilayered thin films composed of Al and Ti, on BMTF ablation. Damage/ablation threshold, which is minimal pulse energy/fluence sufficient for starting ablation, was calculated. The nonmonotonic behavior of ablation thresholds with a minimum at ≈1.5 ps, due to achieving the electron-phonon relaxation time of the absorbed energy in the steel was revealed. It is shown that, with an increase in the pulse width in the considered width range, the efficiency of the ablation decreases by a factor of 2, which is explained by the partial transition from the phase explosion to the surface evaporation. © 2019 Astro Ltd.

AB  - The dependences of the depth of single-pulse ablation of the steel surface on the energy density of ultrashort laser pulses (0.3–12 ps) with a wavelength of 515 nm have the form different from the usual logarithmic one for linear absorption of radiation. Since the density of states of free conduction electrons in the s band is low, and the d band of strongly bound electrons with a high density of states is located around the Fermi level, these dependences have been approximated within the two-photon absorption model. The two-photon absorption coefficient increases almost linearly with the duration of laser pulses, which indicates the saturation of absorption and allows estimating the corresponding parameters of the electronic subsystem. © 2019, Pleiades Publishing, Inc.

AB  - The anticorrosive properties of single and sandwich layers obtained by pulsed laser deposition (PLD) of the pseudo-binary oxide ZnTa2O6 and zinc meso-tetra(4-pyridyl)porphyrin (ZnTPyP) on steel were investigated. Intercalated thin layers made by PLD technique from the pseudo-binary oxide ZnTa2O6 and zinc meso-tetra(4-pyridyl)porphyrin (ZnTPyP) are expected to self-assemble into ordered nanoparticles and to exhibit uniformity and adherence, offering novel anticorrosive properties. The corrosion tests were performed in solution 0.1 mol l-1 NaCl. The best corrosion resistance was exhibited by the steel electrode modified with ZnTPyP/ZnTa2O6 deposited layers, i.e. 66.64% inhibition efficiency. © 2019 IOP Publishing Ltd.

Unique sensing capabilities of LBM include high speed of analysis, high selectivity, sensitivity and accuracy, low detection limits, and remote detection. This paper gives a brief review of several laser-based systems for optical sensing of gas-phase chemical agents: laser intra-cavity, photoacoustic and laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy, and remote sensing based on differential absorption. For each method, a brief description of the principles of operation is given, and its analytical capabilities are outlined.

AB  - Single-shot femtosecond laser ablation of Ti(Al/Ti)(5) and (Ni/Ti)(5) films on silicon substrates was studied as a function of laser fluence by means of scanning electron microscopy, energy-dispersive x-ray spectroscopy, and optical profilometry. Ablation occurs as gradual threshold-like selective removal of a few top layers at lower fluences and rather continuous removal at higher fluences, exponentially increasing versus ablated depth, with the final complete (through) ablation of the entire films. The observed selective rupture at the different internal interfaces was related to thermomechanically and chemically enhanced (interface-facilitated) explosive boiling, with the corresponding energy deposition provided by cascaded heat transfer in the poorly conducting Ti and Ni, and highly conducting Al layers and the interfacial thermal (Kapitza) resistance effect. AB  - Hydrothermally obtained Mg3Ta208 pseudo-binary nanomaterial from MgO and Ta2O5 (3:1) precursors was deposited using the pulsed laser deposition (PLD) technique on carbon steel disks. The PLD main processes parameters, i.e. the pulse energy and the deposition time were varied in order to determine the combination that ensures the best corrosion inhibition. Morphological investigations were carried out (scanning electron microscopy and atomic force microscopy). The anticorrosive properties of the deposited layers were studied in 0.3 M NaCI saline solution. The best anticorrosive protection was observed in the case of the deposited layers on carbon steel disk using the lower energy, i.e. 10mJ for a deposition time of 60s, i.e. 61.94 % inhibition efficiency.

AB  - Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) are denoted by International Agency for Research on Cancer as mutagens, teratogens and carcinogenic to humans. In 2013, Vinca Institute of Nuclear Sciences was hired to determine whether PAHs are present in significant quantities in the concrete walls of newly built residential buildings (about 15,000 m(2) of apartments), and to propose appropriate technical solution for PAH removal in this case. As PAH occurrence, determination and remediation in concrete is, to our knowledge, a completely new field, it was necessary to face a number of challenges, including lack of regulations considering contents of PAHs in concrete, investigation of the origin of PAH contamination in concrete (if established), as Well as finding feasible and non-expensive remediation method, which would be appropriate for residential space. In first part of this study, a Markedly high concentrations of 5 PAHs were detected by UPLC/PDA analysis in samples of both concrete walls and mineral oil used for coating of planks during formwork, while control concrete and mineral oil, taken from independent construction site, were taken as a reference. Such coincidence, as well as the fact that mineral oil has penetrated into the concrete which is proven by ASAP/MS analysis, pointed to the mineral oil as the most probable source of PAH contamination of the concrete. In the second part, an efficient and easy-applicable method for PAH oxidation in concrete (called FHO3AOP), using UV light, H2O2 and ozone, was presented and discussed in terms of previous literature data. AB  - Human exposure to persistent organic contaminants, from building materials, negatively affects peoples health and overall quality of life. This paper presents the validation and uncertainty assessment of the analytical method, developed for the simultaneous determination of 16 EPA polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in solid-solid concrete by ultra-performance liquid chromatography with photo diode-array detector. Linearity of calibration curves was good over the whole range of calibration. Limits of detection varied between 0.2 and 2.9 mu gkg(-1). The accuracy in terms of recovery of the validated method is within the range from 54 to 106%. The developed method proved to be appropriate for analysis of PAHs and can be used for the quality control testing of concrete during the construction of new buildings, the old residences and related buildings associated with sick-building syndrome. In addition, this is the first reported method described for the evaluation of PAHs in solid-solid concrete. (C) 2016 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

AB  - Processing of AlTiN/TiN multilayered hard coatings by femtosecond (fs) laser pulses has been investigated. Irradiation was performed in air with linearly polarized laser radiation with pulses of 200 fs duration at 775 nm wavelength. Single or 1000 subsequent laser pulses were directed at normal incidence towards target surface. Laser energy per pulse was adjusted from 0.5 to 50 mu J and corresponding fluence was 0.17-17.5 J cm(-2). The as deposited and laser-ablated samples were characterized by optical confocal microscopy, optical profilometry and scanning and transmition electron microscopy. In case of the AlTiN/TiN coating, a single-pulse damage threshold of 0.41 J cm(-2) was estimated. Well defined holes/craters with diameters from 7 to 35 mu m, up to 40 mu m depth were drilled, depending on laser pulse energy and number, after 1000 laser pulses. For small energy/fluence, laser induced periodical surface structures were observed. A model is discussed which can account for these features by the accumulation effect during multi-pulse irradiation. The forming craters can prove useful for fabrication of micron solid state lubricant reservoirs in the protective coating-steel system.

As the semiconductor with high UV absorbance and rapid energy transfer to analytes, TiO2 provides soft and efficient desorption/ionization of analytes with relatively low degrees of fragmentation in the gas phase. TiO2 nanocrystals are convenient for small molecules (molecular mass LT 1000 Da) analysis due to low number of background signals. Desorption/ionization processes on TiO2 nanocrystals are related to the physical properties of the substrate, such as the ability to absorb and dissipate energy from the irradiating laser light source. In addition, size and shape of nanocrystals also affect these abilities. The aim of this study is to investigate the influence of shape and size dependant TiO2 nanocrystals/UV laser interaction on the quality of the mass spectra, detectability of analyzed molecules, intensities of the signals and homogeneity of co-crystals onto the MALDI plate, of carbohydrates. It is shown that the size and shape of nanocrystals influenced the way of packing carbohydrates onto plate, and thus affects homogeneity and reproducibility of mass spectrometry analysis.

AB  - The paper presents a study on the surface modifications of nickel based superalloy Nimonic 263 induced by laser shock peening (LSP) process. The process was performed by Nd3+:Yttrium Aluminium Garnet (YAG) picosecond laser using the following parameters: pulse duration 170 ps; repetition rate 10 Hz; pulse numbers of 50, 100 and 200; and wavelength of 1064 nm (with pulse energy of 2 mJ, 10 mJ and 15 mJ) and 532 nm (with pulse energy of 25 mJ, 30 mJ and 35 mJ). The following response characteristics were analyzed: modified surface areas obtained by the laser/material interaction were observed by scanning electron microscopy; elemental composition of the modified surface was evaluated by energy-dispersive spectroscopy (EDS); and Vickers microhardness tests were performed. LSP processing at both 1064 nm and 532 nm wavelengths improved the surface structure and microhardness of a material. Surface morphology changes of the irradiated samples were determined and surface roughness was calculated. These investigations are intended to contribute to the study on the level of microstructure and mechanical properties improvements due to LSP process that operate in a picosecond regime. In particular, the effects of laser wavelength on the microstructural and mechanical changes of a material are studied in detail.

Lower laser intensity irradiation produced periodic surface structures (LIPSS) over the entire irradiated spot with periodicity of similar to 700 nm, almost in agreement with the laser wavelength used. Irradiations carried out at the highest laser intensity (10(14) W/cm(2)) and laser pulse count of 50 resulted in the creation of crater like damages with depth up to 20 mu m. Craters were conically shaped, implying intensive processes which took place at the surface. Generation of LIPSS as well as craters can be of great interest for contemporary technologies.

The experiments were performed using nanosecond Nd: YAG laser operating at 1064 nm. The generated NPs are characterized by UV-vis absorption spectroscopy, laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy, dynamic light scattering and scanning electron microscopy. The conducted investigations can be summarized as follows: (i) CuAg NPs colloidal solution possess the absorption in UV-vis spectral region, which can be attributed to the Cu-component; (ii) the primary bimetallic CuAg NPs have near uniform dimensions with diameter of about 15 nm, and as a rule, they are grouped into larger agglomerates without defined morphology; (iii) the obtained Cu NPs have mainly spherical form with average diameters up to 20 nm. Both types of NPs show a tendency towards the formation of large agglomerates with different morphology. Bimetallic NPs show the plasmon resonance in the vicinity of 640 nm with a good coincidence with formation of the colloidal solution of pure Cu NPs. The results also demonstrate that the core-shell structure (Ag-rich core/Cu-rich shell) is important for the formation of the bimetallic NPs, also agreeing very well with theory.

AB  - Bimetallic NiAu and complex NiO:Au nanoparticles were formed by laser ablation of Ni target immersed in the colloidal gold solution. Effect of laser parameters (pulse duration, fluences and ablation times) on size and composition of nanoparticles was investigated by ablating the target with two Nd:YAG lasers at 1064 nm, operating with different pulse durations, 150 ps and 20 ns. Stronger ablation of the Ni target and subsequient synthesis of nanoparticles is achieved with picosecond pulses, compared to the nanoparticles production with nanosecond pulses, because the former ablation induces activation of different reactions between species in the colloidal solution. Shape, size and composition of the synthesized nanopraticles were found to correlate with the concentration of Ni species in the colloidal solution. Higher Ni concentration leads to formation of larger NiAu nanoparticles in form of solid solution. Smaller nanoparticles with lower Ni concentration in the colloidal solution were achieved by their synthesis during nanosecond pulses, when the obtained distribution of composition corresponds to the NiO matrix with incorporated golden nanoparticles. The results also demonstrate that the formation of bimetallic NiAu and complex NiO:Au nanoparticles were possible by means of laser ablation in liquids. (C) 2015 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

AB  - Optical emission spectroscopy was applied for investigation of copper plasma induced by a nanosecond transversely excited atmospheric CO2 laser, operating at 10.6 mu m. The effect of the background gas (air, Ar, He and N-2) and pressure (1-25 mbar) on plasma formation was examined. The plasma shielding effect was more pronounced for background gases with lower ionization potential than for He. The increase of He pressure from 1 to 25 mbar resulted in fivefold increase of Cu atomic line intensity.

AB  - In this work, we present the results obtained by femtosecond laser processing of AISI D2 steel and the widely applicable titanium-based alloy, Ti6Al4V. Patterning the materials surfaces was done by a Ti: sapphire system at 775 nm wavelength and 200 fs pulse duration, while varying the output pulse energies and the scanning speed. The formation of laser-induced periodical surface structures were found for both materials.

AB  - A single-step process for rapid fabrication of large-area concave microlens
arrays using a diode-pumped solid state (DPSS) laser operating at 473 nm is
developed. Using tartrazine sensitized gelatin layer treated with tot’hema -
mixture of iron (II)-, manganese (II)- and copper(II)gluconate- (denoted
short as tSTG) and a direct laser writing device developed in our laboratory,
we could produce 10 000 uniform microlens arrays within 30 min. Uniform
microlenses with different diameters and depth can be produced by varying
the laser power, exposure time and dye concentration.

AB  - Results of the wear resistance of the diamond-coated cutting tool inserts upon machining Al-12% Si alloy and glass fiber/polyester resin composites are presented in this paper. The aim of this paper was to demonstrate the advantages of application of cutting tool inserts with the diamond coating over the conventional tungsten-carbide (WC) tools, and to obtain the cheaper serial production (shorter machining time) and satisfactory lifetime of the diamond cutting tool inserts. Surface roughness of the machined samples was measured for both as-received and diamond coated inserts. The diamond microstructure of undamaged part of inserts as well as the appearance of microstructure of diamond coated inserts after machining has been investigated. Results of the behavior of two regimes of preparation of diamond-coated inserts were compared and analyzed. Generally, the wear resistance of the diamond-coated cutting tool is superior over the conventional tool.

AB  - Istraživanja sprovedena u okviru ove disertacije prvenstveno doprinoserazumevanju osnovnh procesa koji se odvijaju prilikom interakcije legure Ti6Al4V ilaserske svetlosti. Postojala je mogućnost za ispitivanje parametara laserskog zračenja uširem dijapazonu talasnih dužina, od infracrvenih do ultraljubičastih, pa je ispitivanuticaj talasne dužine na ovu interakciju. Takođe je bilo moguće ispitati uticaj dužinetrajanja laserskog impulsa na karakteristike morfoloških promena. Cilj je bio istražitikako se impulsima laserskog zračenja reda 10-9 i 10-12 sekunde površina može preciznomodifikovati, ali uz pažljivo zadate gustine energije i broj impulsa koji padaju na metu.Analitičke metode kojima su okarakterisane promene na uzorcima su bileoptička i elektronska mikroskopija, kao i kontaktna i beskontaktna profilometrija.Određen je prag oštećenja Ti6Al4V legure za lasersko zračenje talasnih dužina222, 266, 308, 532 i 1064 nm. Utvrđeno je da se fine promene na ovom materijalumogu formirati pri gustinama energija sa vrednostima bliskim pragu oštećenja. Odposebnog je interesa bilo ispitivanje formiranja paralelnih periodičnih struktura napovršini, mikrometarskih i nanometarskih dimenzija. Istraživanja ovih interakcijadoprinela su boljem razumevanju odgovora legure Ti6Al4V izlaganju jednoimpulsnom ivišeimpulsnom ozračivanju laserskim zračenjem.
AB  - Research conducted in this dissertation mainly contributs to bettercomprehension of the overall picture of the interaction of the Ti6Al4V and laser light.The effects of lasers that operated in a wide range of wavelengths, from infrared toultraviolet, were explored and the influence of the wavelength on this interaction also. Itwas also possible to examine the influence of the length of the laser pulse characteristicsof the morphological changes. The aim was to investigate how the alloy surface can beprecisely modified by the laser pulses with of 10-9 and 10-12 seconds pulse duration, withcareful choice of irradiation conditions, such as energy density and number of appliedpulses.Effects of the laser action on the samples were mainly characterized by means ofoptical and electron microscopy, as well as contact and non - contact profilometry.The damage threshold of Ti6Al4V for laser radiation at wavelengths 222, 266,308, 532 and 1064 nm was determined. It was found that the fine changes in the alloycan be formed when the energy density of the incident radiation is of values close to thethreshold damage. Of particular interest was to examine the formation of periodicparallel structures, microscale and nanoscale dimensions, on the surface morphology.Investigations of these interactions contributed to a better understanding of the responseof Ti6Al4V alloy to single – pulse and multi – pulse exposure to laser radiation.

Takođe je bilo moguće ispitati uticaj dužinetrajanja laserskog impulsa na karakteristike morfoloških promena. Cilj je bio istražitikako se impulsima laserskog zračenja reda 10-9 i 10-12 sekunde površina može preciznomodifikovati, ali uz pažljivo zadate gustine energije i broj impulsa koji padaju na metu.Analitičke metode kojima su okarakterisane promene na uzorcima su bileoptička i elektronska mikroskopija, kao i kontaktna i beskontaktna profilometrija.Određen je prag oštećenja Ti6Al4V legure za lasersko zračenje talasnih dužina222, 266, 308, 532 i 1064 nm. Utvrđeno je da se fine promene na ovom materijalumogu formirati pri gustinama energija sa vrednostima bliskim pragu oštećenja. Odposebnog je interesa bilo ispitivanje formiranja paralelnih periodičnih struktura napovršini, mikrometarskih i nanometarskih dimenzija. Istraživanja ovih interakcijadoprinela su boljem razumevanju odgovora legure Ti6Al4V izlaganju jednoimpulsnom ivišeimpulsnom ozračivanju laserskim zračenjem., Research conducted in this dissertation mainly contributs to bettercomprehension of the overall picture of the interaction of the Ti6Al4V and laser light.The effects of lasers that operated in a wide range of wavelengths, from infrared toultraviolet, were explored and the influence of the wavelength on this interaction also. Itwas also possible to examine the influence of the length of the laser pulse characteristicsof the morphological changes. The aim was to investigate how the alloy surface can beprecisely modified by the laser pulses with of 10-9 and 10-12 seconds pulse duration, withcareful choice of irradiation conditions, such as energy density and number of appliedpulses.Effects of the laser action on the samples were mainly characterized by means ofoptical and electron microscopy, as well as contact and non - contact profilometry.The damage threshold of Ti6Al4V for laser radiation at wavelengths 222, 266,308, 532 and 1064 nm was determined. It was found that the fine changes in the alloycan be formed when the energy density of the incident radiation is of values close to thethreshold damage. Of particular interest was to examine the formation of periodicparallel structures, microscale and nanoscale dimensions, on the surface morphology.Investigations of these interactions contributed to a better understanding of the responseof Ti6Al4V alloy to single – pulse and multi – pulse exposure to laser radiation.",

AB  - Interaction of a TEA CO2 laser, operating at 10.6 mu m wavelength and pulse duration of 100 ns (FWHM), with a titanium implant in various gas atmospheres was studied. The Ti implant surface modification was typically studied at the moderate laser beam energy density/fluence of 28 J/cm(2) in the surrounding of air, N-2, O-2 or He. The energy absorbed from the TEA CO2 laser beam is partially converted to thermal energy, which generates a series of effects, such as melting, vaporization of the molten material, shock waves, etc. The following titanium implant surface changes and phenomena were observed, depending on the gas used: (i) creation of cone-like surface structures in the atmospheres of air, N-2 and O-2, and dominant micro-holes/pores in He ambient; (ii) hydrodynamic features, most prominent in air; (iii) formation of titanium nitride and titanium oxide layers, and (iv) occurrence of plasma in front of the implant. It can be concluded from this study that the reported laser fluence and gas ambiences can effectively be applied for enhancing the titanium implant roughness and creation of titanium oxides and nitrides on the strictly localized surface area. The appearance of plasma in front of the implants indicates relatively high temperatures created above the surface. This offers a sterilizing effect, facilitating contaminant-free conditions. AB  - The investigation presented in this paper was carried out on the nickel-based superalloy, Nimonic 263, a material widely used at elevated temperatures and pressures. The samples were exposed to a Nd3+:YAG pulsed laser, at a wavelength of 1064 nm and a pulse duration of 170 ps, and the estimated threshold damage was 2 mJ. Different pulse energies and numbers of pulses were applied in air and helium-enriched atmospheres. Spots obtained by the laser interaction with the material were observed by optical and scanning electron microscopes and analyzed by energy-dispersive spectroscopy. Vickers microhardness tests were performed. In this paper, the changes that had occurred at the sample surface microstructure as a result of laser-material interaction are discussed with the aim of contributing to the determination of optimal laser parameters in the laser surface treatment process.
