AB - In this study, halloysite nanotubes (HNT) were modified by: 3-glycidyloxypropyltrimethoxysilane (GLYMO), 3-aminopropyltrimethoxysilane (APTES), and 2,2-Bis[4-(glycidyloxy) phenyl] propane (DGEBA), and incorporated in the epoxy resin matrix to enhance its mechanical properties. The HNT/epoxy nanocomposite materials were prepared by mixing different ratios of untreated/treated HNT with neat epoxy resin. Characterization of untreated/treated HNT was performed by Fourier-transformation infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy, and X-ray diffraction (XRD). The quantity of grafted molecules and thermal stability of newly synthesized materials were determined by thermogravimetric (TG) and derivative thermogravimetric (DTG) analysis. Tensile properties of newly synthesized materials were compared, and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM) analysis of the fracture surfaces were performed. Incorporation of APTES modified HNT (HNTAPT) and two-step modification APTES followed by DGEBA (HNTAPTDG) has increased the tensile strength of the nanocomposite materials up to 72% and 61%, and strain at break up to 1082% and 1216%, respectively, compared to neat epoxy. It was concluded that the modification of HNT contributed to the enhancement of the dispersion and the cross-linking in the epoxy resin matrix. © 2021 Society of Plastics Engineers

AB - Halloysite nanotubes (HNTs), naturally occurring as aluminosilicate nanoclay mineral, have recently emerged as a possible nanomaterial for countless applications due to their specific chemical structure, tubular shape, high aspect ratio, biocompatibility and low toxicity. In this study, HNTs were incorporated into the epoxy resin matrix to improve its mechanical properties and thermal stability. However, heterogeneous size, surface charge and surface hydrogen bond formation, result in aggregation of HNTs in epoxies to a certain extent. Three specific techniques were used to integrate HNTs into neat epoxy resin (NE). The structure and morphology of the embedded nanotubes were confirmed by Fourier-transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy and X-ray diffraction (XRD). Tensile testing was carried out and the fractured surface of the tested specimen was analysed using scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The thermal stability of the prepared nanocomposite materials was investigated by thermogravimetric (TG) and derivative thermogravimetry (DTG) studies. The obtained results indicated that improved properties of HNTs/epoxy nanocomposite materials were related to the unique properties of well-dispersed HNTs, agglomerate scale, and reduced void presence, and could be controlled by the manufacturing processes.

AB - Thermal properties of acrylate-based composite combined with alumina-based particles were investigated. The composites were made of poly (methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) modified with dimethyl itaconate (DMI) as a matrix. Neat alumina particles (Al2O3) and alumina doped with iron oxide (Al2O3-Fe) modified with 3-aminopropyl-trimethoxylane (AM) and flax oil fatty acid methyl esters (biodiesel - BD) were used as reinforcement. Thermal conductivity measurements showed that composite with alumina particles with the highest alpha phase content had the highest thermal conductivity values. Mechanical properties (tensile strength, modulus of elasticity and elongation at break) were improved by the addition of modified alumina particles to PMMA/DMI matrix. The thermal properties are the most improved for composite with 3 wt.% Al2O3-Fe-AM particles that had the lowest temperature in a crack zone was noticed (10.28 %) compared to PMMA added due to the better stiffness and highest thermal conductivity.

AB - Eu3+ activated LaPO4 phosphors were prepared by a high-temperature solid-state method and irradiated to different high-doses gamma-radiation in the 0-4 MGy range. No effects of high-doses of high-energy radiation on phosphor's morphology and structure were observed, as documented by electron microscopy and X-ray diffraction measurements. On the other hand, photoluminescence measurements showed that emission properties of phosphor were affected by gamma-radiation; changes in radiative properties being prominent for absorbed radiation doses up to 250 kGy after which no additional changes are observed. Judd-Ofelt analysis of emission spectra is performed to thoroughly investigate radiative properties of phosphors. Analysis showed that radiative transition probability of Eu3+ emission decreases while non-radiative probability increases upon gamma-irradiation. Quantum efficiency of emission is decreased from about 46% to 35% when Eu3+ doped LaPO4 powders are exposed to gamma-radiation of 250 kGy dose, showing no additional decrease for higher gamma-radiation doses.

AB - Metallic materials, such as Co-Cr-Mo alloys, are exposed to aggressive conditions in the oral cavity that represents an ideal environment for metallic ion release and biodegradation. The metallic ions released from dental materials can cause local and/or systemic adverse effects in the human body. Therefore, dental materials are required to possess appropriate mechanical, physical, chemical and biological properties. The biocompatibility of metallic materials is very important for dental applications. Accordingly, the aim of this study was to examine metallic ion release and cytotoxicity of Co-30Cr-5Mo cast alloy as the initial phase of biocompatibility evaluation. Determination of the viability of human (MRC-5) and animal (L929) fibroblast cells were conducted using three in vitro test methods: the colorimetric methyl-thiazol-tetrazolium (MTT) test, the dye exclusion test (DET) and the agar diffusion test (ADT). Furthermore, the morphology and growth of the cells were analyzed using scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The obtained results indicated that Co-30Cr-5Mo alloy did not release harmful elements in concentrations high enough to have detrimental effects on human and animal fibroblasts under the given experimental conditions. Moreover, the fibroblast cells showed good adhesion on the surface of the Co-30Cr-5Mo alloy. Therefore, it could be concluded that Co-30Cr-5Mo alloy is a biocompatible material that could be safely used in dentistry.

AB - Metallic biomaterials, which are mainly used for the damaged hard tissue replacements, are materials with high strength, excellent toughness and good wear resistance. The disadvantages of metals as implant materials are their susceptibility to corrosion, the elastic modulus mismatch between metals and human hard tissues, relatively high density and metallic ion release, which can cause serious health problems. The aim of this study was to examine metallic ion release from Co-Cr-Mo alloy in artificial saliva. In that purpose, alloy samples were immersed into artificial saliva with different pH values (4.0, 5.5 and 7.5). After a certain immersion period (1, 3 and 6 weeks) the concentrations of released ions were determined using inductively coupled plasma-mass spectrometry (ICP-MS). The research findings were used in order to define the dependence between the concentration of released metallic ions, artificial saliva pH values and immersion time. The determined released metallic ions concentrations were compared with literature data in order to describe and better understand the phenomenon of metallic ion release from the biocom-patible cobalt-based alloy.

abstract = "Metallic biomaterials, which are mainly used for the damaged hard tissue replacements, are materials with high strength, excellent toughness and good wear resistance. The determined released metallic ions concentrations were compared with literature data in order to describe and better understand the phenomenon of metallic ion release from the biocom-patible cobalt-based alloy., Metalni biomaterijali, koji se najčešće koriste za zamenu oštećenih čvrstih tkiva u organizmu čoveka, su materijali velike čvrstoće, žilavosti i otpornosti prema habanju.
