AB - Barium titanate (BT) perovskite particles were surface modified by means of mechanical treatment and used as inorganic component in polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) based composites. The changes in electrical properties of the composite films with increasing in filler content were followed by dielectric spectroscopy, breakdown strength and D-E measurements. A comparison of the properties of the composites prepared with untreated and mechanically activated particles revealed that there is a significant difference in their performances at low filler concentrations (<20 wt%). Introduction of the surface modified ceramic particles into PVDF matrix led to an increase of the dielectric constant without affecting significantly the electrical breakdown strength. In contrast, when as received BT particles were used a filler, both dielectric constants and breakdown strengths of the composite films were lower than the corresponding values observed for the pure PVDF. At higher concentrations, however, the influence of pre-treatment of the filler on the effective electrical properties becomes less significant. The obtained results were discussed in terms of the pronounced crystallization of polar β and γ crystal phases of PVDF in the presence of surface modified BT fillers, which is confirmed by Raman spectroscopy.

AB - Ceramic/polymer composites can be chemically stable, mechanically strong, and flexible, which make them candidates for electric devices, such as pressure or temperature sensors, energy storage or harvesting devices, actuators, and so forth. Depending on the application, various electrical properties are of importance. Polymers usually have low dielectric permittivity, but increased dielectric permittivity can be achieved by the addition of the ceramic fillers with high dielectric constant. With the aim to enhance dielectric properties of the composite without loss of flexibility, 5 wt% of BaTiO3-Fe2O3 powder was added into a polyvinylidene fluoride matrix. The powder was prepared by different synthesis conditions to produce core/shell structures. The effect of the phase composition and morphology of the BaTiO3-Fe2O3 core/shell filler on the structure and lattice dynamics of the polymer composites was investigated. Based on the results of the thermal analysis, various parameters of ceramic/polymer composites were determined. Differences in the phase composition and morphology of the filler have an influence on the formation of various polyvinylidene fluoride allomorphs and the degree of crystallinity. Furthermore, the dielectric performances of pure polyvinylidene fluoride and the polymer/ceramic composites were measured.

AB - High performance polymers with bio-based modifiers are promising materials in terms of applications and environmental impact. In this work, raw acacia honey was used as a bio-modifier for epoxy resin, as a rich source of functional groups. The addition of honey resulted in the formation of highly stable structures that were observed in scanning electron microscopy images as separate phases at the fracture surface, which were involved in the toughening of the resin. Structural changes were investigated, revealing the formation of a new aldehyde carbonyl group. Thermal analysis confirmed the formation of products that were stable up to 600 °C, with a glass transition temperature of 228 °C. An energy-controlled impact test was performed to compare the absorbed impact energy of bio-modified epoxy containing different amounts of honey with unmodified epoxy resin. The results showed that bio-modified epoxy resin with 3 wt% of acacia honey could withstand several impacts with full recovery, while unmodified epoxy resin broke at first impact. The absorbed energy at first impact was 2.5 times higher for bio-modified epoxy resin than it was for unmodified epoxy resin. In this manner, by using simple preparation and a raw material that is abundant in nature, a novel epoxy with high thermal and impact resistance was obtained, opening a path for further research in this field.

AB - There is an important novelty in biomaterials by innovative potential based on (ultra)nanocrystalline diamonds, what is almost the new result in scientific world, from the Institute of Functional Nanosystems, from Ulm University. The nanosynthetized diamonds are very new frontier application from the area biomedicine. From the other side, there is evident biocompatibility of the diamond layers, selectively improved by biomimetic 3D patterns structuring. From this point of view, graph theory approach is very inspirable new idea, already applied in some other systems, within material sciences, and electronic ceramics. By graphs, we already confirmed, also the first time in material sciences, that we can easily define the parameters values on the microstructure level between the structure constituencies grains and pores. So, now we originally apply all of this on the synthetized diamond structures. This novelty, graph applications, has the great importance in getting the additional ideas and directions for phenomena analysis of electrical and thermal conductivity grow, while electroconductivity goes down and opposite, better understanding. We already have done some analysis in this field by fractal nature approach, but here we add new methods based on very original graph theory.

AB - Due to the growing number of people infected with the new coronavirus globally, which weakens immunity, there has been an increase in bacterial infections. Hence, knowledge about simple and low-cost synthesis methods of materials with good structural and antimicrobial properties is of great importance. A material obtained through the combination of a nanoscale hydroxyapatite material (with good biocompatibility) and titanium dioxide (with good degradation properties of organic molecules) can absorb and decompose bacteria. In this investigation, three different synthesis routes used to prepare hydroxyapatite/titanium dioxide nanomaterials are examined. The morphology and semiquantitative chemical composition are characterized by scanning electron microscopy with energy dispersive X-ray analysis (SEM-EDX). The obtained materials’ phase and structural characterization are determined using the X-ray powder diffraction method (XRD). The crystallite sizes of the obtained materials are in the range of 8 nm to 15 nm. Based on XRD peak positions, the hexagonal hydroxyapatite phases are formed in all samples along with TiO2 anatase and rutile phases. According to SEM and TEM analyses, the morphology of the prepared samples differs depending on the synthesis route. The EDX analysis confirmed the presence of Ti, Ca, P, and O in the obtained materials. The IR spectroscopy verified the vibration bands characteristic for HAp and titanium. The investigated materials show excellent antimicrobial and photocatalytic properties.

abstract = "Due to the growing number of people infected with the new coronavirus globally, which weakens immunity, there has been an increase in bacterial infections. AB - The rise of innovation in the electrical industry is driven by the controlled design of new materials. The hybrid materials based on magnetite/nanocellulose are highly interesting due to their various applications in medicine, ecology, catalysis and electronics. In this study, the structure and morphology of nanocellulose/magnetite hybrid nanomaterials were investigated. The effect of nanocellulose loading on the crystal structure of synthesized composites was investigated by XRD and FTIR methods. The presented study reveals that the interaction between the cellulose and magnetic nanoparticles depends on the nanocellulose content. Further, a transition from cellulose II to cellulose I allomorph is observed. SEM and EDS are employed to determine the variation in morphology with changes in component concentrations. By the calculation of magnetic interactions between adjacent Fe3+ and Fe2+ ions within composites, it is determined that ferromagnetic coupling predominates.

AB - BaTiO3 (BTO) is considered the most commonly used ceramic material in multilayer ceramic capacitors due to its desirable dielectric properties. Considering that the miniaturization of electronic devices represents an expanding field of research, modification of BTO has been performed to increase dielectric constant and DC bias characteristic/sensitivity. This research presents the effect of N2 and air atmospheres on morphological and dielectric properties of BTO nanoparticles modified with organometallic salt at sintering temperatures of 1200∘1200∘C, 1250∘1250∘C, 1300∘1300∘C, and 1350∘1350∘C. Measured dielectric constants were up to 35,000, with achieved very high values in both atmospheres. Field emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM) was used for morphological characterization, revealing a porous structure in all the samples. The software image analysis of FESEM images showed a connection between particle and pore size distribution, as well as porosity. Based on the data from the image analysis, the prediction of dielectric properties in relation to morphology indicated that yttrium-based organometallic salt reduced oxygen vacancy generation in N2 atmosphere. DC bias sensitivity measurements showed that samples with higher dielectric constant had more pronounced sensitivity to voltage change, but most of the samples were stable up to 100 V, making our modified BTO a promising candidate for capacitors.

AB - The Nanocrystaline diamonds are very important biomedical material with variety of applications. The experimental procedures and results have been done in the Institute of Functional Nanosystems at the University Ulm, Germany. There is an existing biocompatibility of the diamond layers, selectively improved by biomimetic 3-D patterns structuring. Based on that, we have been inspired to apply the graph theory approach in analysing and defining the physical parameters within the structure of materials structure samples. Instead the parameters values, characteristic at the samples surface, we penetrate the graphs deeply in the bulk structure. These values could be only, with some probability, distributed through the micro-structure what defines not enough precious parameters values between the micro-structure constituents, grains and pores. So, we originally applied the graph theory to get defined the physical parameters at the grains and pores levels. This novelty, in our paper, we applied for thermophysical parameters, like thermoconductiviy. By graph approach we open new frontiers in controlling and defining the processes at micro-structure relations. In this way, we can easily predict and design the structure with proposed parameters.

AB - Na0.25K0.25Bi0.5TiO3 (NKBT) perovskite particles are synthesized by solid-state method and used as a filler for polyvinylidene fluoride-co-hexafluoropropylene (PVDF-HFP) co-polymer. X-ray diffraction analysis of NKBT powders shows that the particles have a rhombohedral perovskite crystal structure (R3c symmetry). Raman spectroscopy reveals that the co-polymer crystallizes predominantly into the mixture of polar β- and γ-crystals, while there is also a contribution of the non-polar α-crystal phase. The introduction of the NKBT into the PVDF-HFP results with an increase in effective dielectric permittivity and this effect depends on the inorganic content in the composite. The most interesting result of the present study is that the introduction of NKBT particles induces the appearance of an additional transition peak in the dielectric spectra of the co-polymer matrix. At the fixed frequency of ~2 kHz, the observed process appears at ~10 °C (about 45° above the glass transition temperature) and its magnitude strongly depends on the amount of the NKBT in the composite. Dielectric spectroscopy measurements of the composites are carried out in the wide range of frequencies (from 0.1 Hz to 1 MHz) and temperatures (from −100 to 100 °C). They reveal that the novel process can be clearly distinguished in the frequency range between 160 Hz and ~50 kHz. © 2021 The Authors

AB - Polymers offer the possibility of different reinforcement incorporation due to a broad range of chemical structures.Along with this feature, their light weight and processing ease made them a class of materials that have been applied in construction parts, drug delivery agents or electronic devices. Epoxy-based composites have used as insulators in microelectronic devices due to its chemical resistance, good adhesion properties and endurance. As epoxies have low fracture resistance, they are often reinforced with different kinds of fibers. With thorough knowledge of the structure, physical properties can be predicted and included in the processing of future composites, especially that electronic materials minituarization brought micro- and nanoscale level properties at spotlight. Fractal nature analysis is a mathematical method that has proved to be efficient in grain interface properties applied on perovskite ceramic materials. In our study, fiber shape reconstruction and determination of Hausdorff dimension have been achieved with the application of fractal regression model employed in software Fractal Real Finder opening a new path for the prediction of reinforcement shape and size, all with the aim of processing composite materials with desired properties.

AB - The BaTiO3 ceramics applications based on electronic properties have very high gradient scientific and industrial-technological interests. Our scientific research has been based on nano BaTiO3 modified with Yttrium based organometallic salt (MOD-Y). The samples have been consolidated at a sintering temperature of 1350 °C. Within the study, the new frontiers for different electronic properties between the layers of BaTiO3 grains have been introduced. The research target was grain boundary investigations and the influence on dielectric properties. After scanning electron microscopy and dielectric measurements, it has been established that modified BaTiO3 samples with larger grains showed a better compact state that led to a higher dielectric constant value. DC bias stability was also investigated and showed a connection between the grain size and capacitance stability. Analyses of functions that could approximate experimental curves were successfully employed. Practical application of fractal corrections was performed, based on surface (αs) and pore size (αp) corrections, which resulted in obtainment of the relation between the capacitance and Curie temperature. Successful introduction of fractal corrections for capacitance-Curie temperature dependence for a set of experimental data is an important step towards further miniaturization of intergranular capacitors. © 2020 by the authors.

AB - This paper is based on fundamental research to develop the interface structure around the grains and to control the layers between two grains, as a prospective media for high-level electronic parameters integrations. We performed the experiments based on nano-BaTiO3 powders with Y additives. All results on dielectric parameters on submicron level are the part of global values the same measured characteristics at the bulk samples. The original idea is to develop the new computing ways to network electronic parameters in thin layers between the grains on the way to get and to compare the values on the samples. Artificial neural networks are computing tools that map input-output data and could be applied on ceramic electronic parameters. These are developed in the manner signals are processed in biological neural networks. The signals are processed by using elements which represent artificial neurons, which have a simple function to process input signal, as well as adjustable parameter which has an influence to change output signal. The total network output presents the sum of a large number neurons outputs. This important research idea is to connect analysis results and neural networks. There is a great interest to connect all of these microcapacitances by neural network with the goal to compare the results in the standard bulk samples measurements frame and microelectronics parameters. The final result of the study was functional relation definition between consolidation parameters, voltage (U) and relative capacitance change, from the level of the bulk sample down to the grains boundaries.

AB - This research is focused on further developing of application and use of graph theory in order to describe relations between grains and to establish control over layers. We used functionalized BaTiO3 nanoparticles coated with Yttrium-based salt. The capacitance change results on super-microstructure levels are the part of the measured values on the bulk samples. The new idea is graph theory application for determination of electronic parameters distribution at the grain boundary and to compare them with the bulk measured values. We present them with vertices in graph, corresponding with grains, connected with edges. Capacitance change with applied voltage was measured on samples sintered in air and nitrogen, up to 100 V. Using graph theory, it has been shown that capacitance change can be successfully calculated on the layers between grains. Within the idea how to get parameters values at microlevel between the grains and pores, mathematical tool can be developed. Besides previously described 1D case, some original calculations for 2D cases were performed in this study, proving successful graph theory use for the calculation of values at nanolevel, leading to a further minituarization in micropackaging.

AB - Iron oxide, in the form of magnetite (MG)–functionalized porous wollastonite (WL), was used as an adsorbent for heavy metal ions (cadmium and nickel) and oxyanions (chromate and phosphate) removal from water. The porous WL was synthesized from calcium carbonate and siloxane by controlled sintering process using low molecular weight submicrosized poly(methyl methacrylate) as a pore-forming agent. The precipitation of MG nanoparticles was carried out directly by a polyol-medium solvothermal method or via branched amino/carboxylic acid cross-linker by solvent/nonsolvent method producing WL/MG and WL-?-APS/MG adsorbents, respectively. The structure/properties of MG functionalized WL was confirmed by applying FTIR, Raman, XRD, Mössbauer, and SEM analysis. Higher adsorption capacities of 73.126, 66.144, 64.168, and 63.456 mg g -1 for WL-?-APS/MG in relation to WL/MG of 55.450, 52.019, 48.132, and 47.382 mg g -1 for Cd 2+ , Ni 2+ , phosphate, and chromate, respectively, were obtained using nonlinear Langmuir model fitting. Adsorption phenomena were analyzed using monolayer statistical physics model for single adsorption with one energy. Kinetic study showed exceptionally higher pseudo-second-order rate constants for WL-?-APS/MG, e.g., 1.17–13.4 times, with respect to WL/MG indicating importance of both WL surface modification and controllable precipitation of MG on WL-?-APS. © 2019, Springer-Verlag GmbH Germany, part of Springer Nature.

The precipitation of MG nanoparticles was carried out directly by a polyol-medium solvothermal method or via branched amino/carboxylic acid cross-linker by solvent/nonsolvent method producing WL/MG and WL-γ-APS/MG adsorbents, respectively. The structure/properties of MG functionalized WL was confirmed by applying FTIR, Raman, XRD, Mössbauer, and SEM analysis. Higher adsorption capacities of 73.126, 66.144, 64.168, and 63.456 mg g−1 for WL-γ-APS/MG in relation to WL/MG of 55.450, 52.019, 48.132, and 47.382 mg g−1 for Cd2+, Ni2+, phosphate, and chromate, respectively, were obtained using nonlinear Langmuir model fitting. Adsorption phenomena were analyzed using monolayer statistical physics model for single adsorption with one energy. Kinetic study showed exceptionally higher pseudo-second-order rate constants for WL-γ-APS/MG, e.g., 1.17–13.4 times, with respect to WL/MG indicating importance of both WL surface modification and controllable precipitation of MG on WL-γ-APS.

AB - The paper presents results of the influence of mechanical activation of shungite, a carbon-mineral rock material rich in silica and carbon, on its sintering behaviour, and obtaining of pure SiC ceramics. The mechanical activation of the starting powder was performed in a high-energy ball mill in time intervals from 30 to 480 min. The phase composition of the starting powders and sintered samples was analysed by the X-ray diffraction method. The first traces of SiC were detected after sintering at 1350 °C for 2 h in an Ar atmosphere, along with traces of unreacted SiO2. The scanning electron microscopy was performed in order to determine changes in the microstructure. Sintering was performed at various temperatures for 2 h, in an Ar atmosphere and a vacuum. Dielectric properties of the sintered samples were measured in the frequency range from 1 to 500 MHz. The obtained results indicate that the sintered powder is a good candidate for applications as an absorber of electromagnetic waves in microwave engineering. © 2019 University of Novi Sad, Faculty of Technology. AB - Multiferroic materials attracted a lot of attention in recent years because of their significant scientific interest and technological applications. The multiferroic core/shell powders have a better connectivity between the phases, resulting in superior dielectric and magneto electric properties. In this study, the influence of preparation condition on structure and properties of BaTiO3/α-Fe2O3 core/shell composite materials was examined. The five samples were obtained by varying synthesis conditions, such as synthesized method (co-precipitation and sonochemical method) and pH values of solution. XRD and Raman spectroscopy analyses were performed in order to determine phase composition and structural changes within samples. Morphology modifications were examined by SEM and EDS analyses. Finally, effect of structural and microstructural changes on magnetic and electrical properties was detected and explained.

AB - Titanium dioxide is a photocatalyst, known not only for its ability to oxidize organic contaminants, but also for its antimicrobial properties. In this article, significant enhancement of the antimicrobial activity of TiO2 (up to 32 times) was demonstrated after its activation by ball milling. The antimicrobial activity was analyzed for one fungal and 13 bacterial ATCC strains using the microdilution method and recording the minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) values. In order to further investigate the correlation between the mechanical activation of TiO2 and its antimicrobial activity, the structure, morphology and phase composition of the material were studied by means of Electron Microscopy, X-ray diffraction and nitrogen adsorption-desorption measurements. UV-Vis diffuse reflectance spectra were recorded and the Kubelka-Munk function was applied to convert reflectance into the equivalent band gap energy (Eg) and, consequently, to investigate changes in the Eg value. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy was used to analyze the influence of mechanical activation on the Ti 2p and O 1s spectra. The presented results are expected to enable the development of more sustainable and effective advanced TiO2-based materials with antimicrobial properties that could be used in numerous green technology applications.

AB - The interaction of partially reduced graphene oxide (prGO) and Huh7.5.1 liver cancer cells was investigated by means of DUV fluorescence bioimaging. The prGO sample was obtained by the reduction (to a certain extent) of the initially prepared graphene oxide (GO) nanosheets with hydrazine. The fluorescence of the GO nanosheets increases with time of the reduction due to a change in ratio of the sp2 and sp3 carbon sites and the prGO sample was extracted from the dispersion after 6 min, when the intensity of the fluorescence reached its maximum. The reduction process was left to proceed further to saturation until highly reduced graphene oxide (denoted here as rGO) was obtained. GO, prGO and rGO samples were investigated by structural (scanning electron microscopy (SEM), scanning transmission electron microscopy coupled with energy dispersive spectrometry (STEM-EDS)) and spectroscopic (UV-vis, photoluminescence (PL), Raman) methods. After that, Huh7.5.1 cells were incubated with GO, prGO and rGO nanosheets and used in bioimaging studies, which were performed on DISCO beamline of synchrotron SOLEIL. It was found that the prGO significantly enhanced the fluorescence of the cells and increased the intensity of the signal by ~2.5 times. Time-lapse fluorescence microscopy experiments showed that fluorescence dynamics strongly depends on the type of nanosheets used. The obtained prGO nanostructure can be easily conjugated with aromatic ring containing drugs, which opens a possibility for its applications in fluorescence microscopy monitored drug delivery. © 2018 IOP Publishing Ltd.

AB - The influence of the mechanical activation of ZnO nanoparticle fillers on the structural and electrical properties of the matrix of poly(vinylidenefluoride)-ZnO (PVDF-ZnO) films was investigated. Transmission electron microscopy and scanning electron microscopy analyses showed that mechanical activation in a high energy planetary ball mill reduces the size of ZnO particles. X-ray diffraction and Raman spectroscopy revealed that PVDF crystallized predominantly as the γ-phase. Non-activated ZnO filler reduces the degree of the crystallinity of the matrix and promotes crystallization of α-phase of PVDF in the film, while the fillers activated for 5 and 10 min induce crystallization of β-phase, indicating that mechanical activation of the filler can be used as a general method for fabrication of PVDF composites with increased content of piezoelectric β-phase crystals. Dielectric spectroscopy measurements show that polymer composite with the high content of β-phase (with ZnO filler activated for 5 min) exhibits the highest value of dielectric permittivity in 150-400 K range of temperatures. Kinetic analysis shows combined effects of increased surface area and increased concentration of surface defects on the interactions between polymer chains and activated nanoparticles. © 2018 IOP Publishing Ltd.

AB - One-dimensional (1D) TiO2 nanotubes perpendicular to the substrate were obtained by electrochemical oxidation of titanium foil in an acid electrolyte. In order to alter the crystallinity and the morphology of films the as-anodized amorphous TiO2 nanotube films were sintered at elevated temperatures. The evolution of the morphology was visualized via scanning electron microscopy (SEM), while the crystalline structure was investigated by Xray diffraction (XRD) and Raman spectroscopy. The chemical composition was studied by Xray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). The effects of crystallinity and morphology of TiO2 nanotube (NTs) films on photocatalytic degradation of methyl orange (MO) in an aqueous solution under UV light irradiation were also investigated. The TiO2 nanotubes sintered at 650 degrees C for 30 min had the highest degree of crystallinity and exhibited the best photocatalytic activity among the studied TiO2 nanotube films.
