AB - One of the effects of the interaction of ultrashort laser beam with materials is the forming of laser-induced parallel surface structures (LIPSS), with period less than beam wavelength. For multilayer thin metal films, the quality of formed structures is better. The sample of five bilayers of Al and Ti on Si substrate was exposed to femtosecond beam and noticed the forming of of two types of structures different in shape. Both are most probably the product of surface Plasmon polariton on the surface of most top layer. The occurrence of Plasmon polariton on the surface of thin metal layers and nanoparticles can confine the propagation of electromagnetic field and to amplify the fluorescent signal from molecules of the chemical compound on the surface. Depending on the interface structure for determining the target chemical on metal surface, Plasmon enhanced fluorescence is an attractive method for shortening the time of detection and increasing the sensitivity of various analytical technologies used in forensics.

AB - The experimental study of the static and dynamic femtosecond laser ablation of the multilayer 15x(Ti/Zr)/Si system is reported. The layer-by-layer selective laser ablation mechanism was studied by analysis of the surface morphology and elemental composition in static single pulse irradiation in a range of pulse energy from 10 to 17 $$\upmu $$J. The selective ablations, as number of concentric circles in modified spots are increased with the pulse energy. The boundary between the circles was shown a change in the depth, comparable to the thickness of the individual layers. Changes in the elemental composition at the edges are associated with the removal of the layer by layer. The dynamic multipulse irradiation was observed via the production of lines with laser-induced periodic surface structures (LIPSS) at different laser parameters (scan velocities and laser polarization). The spatial periodicity of the formed LIPSS depends on changes in the effective number of pulses and laser polarization, as well as the nature of the material. For better interpretation of the experimental results, simulations have been conducted to explore the thermal response of the multiple layered structure 15x(Ti/Zr) after static single pulse irradiation.

AB - The interaction of ultrashort laser beam with metal surfaces may induce the generation of periodic structures (LIPSS) with period less than the incoming wavelength, opening wide area of application [1, 2]. The presence of the underneath layer influences the quality of the LIPSS [3] . We have exposed multilayer thin films Ni/Ti, Ni/Pd, W/Ti, Ti/Ta to femtosecond beams of various wavelengths and powers. The interactions have been performed by Mira900 fs laser of Coherent. Detailed surface morphology after irradiation was examined firstly by optical microscopy, and then by scanning electron microscopy (JEOL JSM-7500F, Tokyo, Japan). Two types of structures have been noticed. Their appearance differ in the direction against the polarization direction, in pronounced ablation and in the spatial period, enabling their grouping into LIPSS of higher and lower spatial frequencies. Surface plasmon polariton is seen as the most probable cause of periodic distribution of energy at the surface and consequently to LIPSS.

AB - The occurrence of laser-induced periodic surface structures (LIPSS) has been known for a while. Multilayer thin films, like Al/Ti, are suitable for LIPSS formation and attractive for applications—due to their wearing behavior and corrosion resistance; LIPSS generation may improve their properties as well. LIPSS properties depend not only on the material but also on the beam characteristics, like wavelength, polarization and scanning directions, etc. After exposing with NIR femtosecond pulses from Coherent Mira 900 laser system in several beam exposures, we have analyzed the samples of thin metal film systems with Tescan Mira3 SEM and NTegra AFM. The formation of LIPSS is most probably due to the generation of surface plasmon polariton, through the periodic distribution of energy in the interaction zone which lead to thermal processes in layers and interfaces. Two types of LIPSS were generated, which differ in shape, orientation and in ablation pronounced or not. For consecutive interactions in the same direction, LIPSS maintained its orientation, while for orthogonal passes LIPSS with mutually orthogonal orientation were generated. LIPSS period fluctuated between 320 and 380 nm and structures with pronounced ablation have significantly smaller width. Probable mechanism is that for greater accumulated energy pronounced ablation takes place giving LIPSS in the form of trenches or grooves, while for less accumulated energy the buildup of the material—probably due to pronounced oxidation—lead to LIPSS in the form of hills or ridges.

AB - The influence of material characteristics—i.e., type or surface texture—to wetting properties is nowadays increased by the implementation of ultrafast lasers for nanostructuring. In this account, we exposed multilayer thin metal film samples of different materials to a femtosecond laser beam at a 1030 nm wavelength. The interaction generated high-quality laser-induced periodic surface structures (LIPSS) of spatial periods between 740 and 790 nm and with maximal average corrugation height below 100 nm. The contact angle (CA) values of the water droplets on the surface were estimated and the values between unmodified and modified samples were compared. Even though the laser interaction changed both the surface morphology and the chemical composition, the wetting properties were predominantly influenced by the small change in morphology causing the increase in the contact angle of ~80%, which could not be explained classically. The influence of both surface corrugation and chemical composition to the wetting properties has been thoroughly investigated, discussed and explained. The presented results clearly confirm that femtosecond patterning can be used to mold wetting properties.

Probable mechanism is that for greater accumulated energy pronounced ablation takes place giving LIPSS in the form of “trenches”, while for less accumulated energy the buildup of the material – probably due to pronounced oxidation – lead to LIPSS in the form of “hills”.

AB - Nanostructuring of surfaces by femtosecond (fs) laser beam interaction is the topic of research for some time [1]. The emergence of the laser-induced periodic surface structures (LIPSS) on metal-dielectric surfaces is of interest from fundamental and application points of view. The interaction of fs beam with thin films can also generate LIPSS, with the arrangement of thin films in multi-layer structure being important for the quality of the LIPSS [2]. Excellent properties of titanium (Ti) and tantalum (Ta), like corrosion resistance, heat transfer properties and workability, recommend them as useful materials for a wide range of applications - heat exchangers, reactors, and others exposed to extremely corrosive fluids. Combining Ti and Ta could be attractive for applications, but challenging, as they have great difference in melting point and density, therefore, TiTa alloys are still not widely adopted in applications [3]. We have performed the interaction of fs laser beam with multilayer Ti/Ta samples in order to investigate the effects of interaction with ultra-short pulses to surface morphology and to both surface and bulk chemistry of newly generated compounds. Each layer of the sample was 17 nm thick. The interactions were in two regimes: dynamic and static, depending whether the beam scanned over the sample surface or not. SEM and PIXE RBS analyses have shown the LIPSS formed with or without ablation depending on the beam fluence. The LIPSS orientation is dependent on the input beam polarization. Both types of LIPSS were formed, low- and highspatial frequency LIPSS, with periods being as low as 120 nm.

The occurrence of surface plasmon polariton most probably induces the LIPSS arrangement. We have used low-fluence scanning femtosecond beam to generate sub-wavelength periodic structures on multilayer Ni/Pd thin films on Si. The spatial period of LIPSS increases with the change of scanning directions in respect to the polarization direction due to the phase difference increase between the incoming and induced oscillations. AB - Formation of periodic nanostructures on the Ti/5x(Al/Ti)/Si multilayers induced by picosecond laser pulses is studied in order to better understand the formation of a laser-induced periodic surface structure (LIPSS). At fluence slightly below the ablation threshold, the formation of low spatial frequency-LIPSS (LSFL) oriented perpendicular to the direction of the laser polarization is observed on the irradiated area. Prolonged irradiation while scanning results in the formation of a high spatial frequency-LIPSS (HSFL), on top of the LSFLs, creating a co-existence parallel periodic structure. HSFL was oriented parallel to the incident laser polarization. Intermixing between the Al and Ti layers with the formation of Al-Ti intermetallic compounds was achieved during the irradiation. The intermetallic region was formed mostly within the heat affected zone of the sample. Surface segregation of aluminium with partial ablation of the top layer of titanium was followed by the formation of an ultra-thin Al2O3 film on the surface of the multi-layered structure. AB - The carbon fiber based composites: carbon fiber reinforced plastic and 3D carbon fiber reinforced carbon composites were exposed to the Nd3+: YAG laser beams (1064 nm). Experimental parameters for the interaction of the laser beam with 1.5 Hz pulse frequency and with pulse duration 0.7 ms varied: energy density between 128 and 1915 J cm(-2), pulse energy from 1 to 3 J and mean power in the range between 0.4 and 6.5 kW. Apparently, the energy absorbed by the composite samples was mainly converted into thermal energy, causing a range of damages, from instantaneous evaporation to cracking and melting, which resulted in a crater-like damage. Program ImageJ was executed for quantitative analysis of generated damages based on micrographs obtained by SEM and light microscopes. Obtaied results enable identification of the laser induced changes in the material. (C) 2017 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

abstract = "The carbon fiber based composites: carbon fiber reinforced plastic and 3D carbon fiber reinforced carbon composites were exposed to the Nd3+: YAG laser beams (1064 nm). All rights reserved.",

AB - High quality bismuth germanium oxide single crystals were irradiated by a femtosecond pulsed laser beam of increasing power. Analyses performed on irradiated and unirradiated samples showed significant changes in transmittance, transmission spectra, sample color, Raman spectra, X-ray diffraction (XRD) pattern, Verdet constant, magneto-optical property, and absorption coefficient. After irradiation, the transmission spectra values increased whereas anisotropy detected in the transmission spectra of unirradiated samples disappeared. The change of color caused by irradiation was noticeable to the naked eye. The XRD measurements confirmed structural changes induced by laser irradiation, i.e., the laser-beam-incident side of the sample became almost amorphous, whereas the side opposite to the incident can be indexed to the Bi12GeO20 compound. Irradiation caused increase of Raman spectra peaks with the exception of crystal peaks of type E, which disappeared. The femtosecond pulsed laser irradiation can be used to improve bismuth germanium oxide single crystal optical properties. (C) 2016 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

AB - The effects of UV femtosecond laser beam with 76 MHz repetition rate on two types of thin films on Si substrate - the Al single layer thin film, and the multilayered thin film consisted of five Al/Ti bilayers (total thickness 130 nm) - were studied. The surface modification of the target was done by low fluences and different irradiation times, not exceeding similar to 300s. Nanopatterns in the form of femtosecond-laser induced periodic surface structures (fs-LIPSS) with periodicity of LT 315 nm and height of 45 nm were registered upon irradiation of the thin films. It was shown that: (i) the fs-LIPSS evolve from ruffles similar to high spatial frequency LIPSS (HSFL) into a low spatial frequency LIPSS (LSFL) if a certain threshold of the fluence is met, (ii) the number of LSFL increases with the exposition time and (iii) the LSFL remain stable even after long exposure times. We achieved high-quality highly-controllable fabrication of periodic structures on the surface of nanosized multilayer films with high-repetition-rate low-fluence femtosecond laser pulses. Compared to the Al single layer, the presence of the Ti underlayer in the Al/Ti multilayer thin film enabled more efficient heat transmittance through the Al/Ti interface away from the interaction zone which caused the reduction of the ablation effects leading to the formation of more regular LIPSS. The different outcomes of interactions with multi and single layer thin films lead to the conclusion that the behavior of the LIPSS is due to thin film structure. (C) 2014 Elsevier B.V. AB - Purpose - The purpose of this paper is to present the results of interaction occurring during the exposition of some specific carbon textile materials obtained in laboratory conditions to beams of various laser types. Design/methodology/approach - Carbon fabric materials - fiber, felt and cloth - obtained from different precursor materials and prepared at various process conditions (oxidized, partially carbonized, carbonized, graphitized), were exposed to pulses of various lasers (Nd3+:YAG, alexandrite, ruby). Findings - Depending on the laser power, plasma and destructive phenomena occurred. In the case of an interaction between a Nd3+: YAG laser beam and specimens of thickness in millimeter range, the authors have estimated the threshold of the energy density for drilling and discussed the possible models of the interaction. Research limitations/implications - The results have implications in the estimations of quality as well as in the improvement of material processing, giving some new light to the changes of mechanical and optical constants of the material, as well as to the changes of carbon groups of the material, which would be useful for different types of modeling. Future research will be in the interaction of laser beams with various textile materials, where the investigation would cover the microstructure changes and the implications on cloth cutting and welding, concerning the damages as well as relief structures, specially renew for fs laser regimes. Originality/value - The area of laser applications in the textile industry is supported by scientific and applicative exploration. However, fewer results are concerned with deep introspection into the microstructure of the damages considering the laser interaction with carbon fiber and other carbon-based textiles.

AB - This paper presents simulation and experimental results for the exposure of some carbon-based materials to alexandrite and Nd3+:YAG (yttrium aluminum garnet) laser radiation. Simulation of the heating effects was carried out using the COMSOL Multiphysics 3.5 package for samples of carbon-based P7295-2 fiber irradiated using an alexandrite laser and carbon-based P4396-2 fiber irradiated using an Nd3+:YAG laser, as well as by applying finite element modeling for P7295-2 samples irradiated using an Nd3+:YAG laser. In the experimental part, P7295-2 samples were exposed to alexandrite laser radiation while samples of carbon-based composite 3D C/C were exposed to Nd3+:YAG laser radiation. Micrographs of the laser induced craters were obtained by light and scanning electron microscopy, and the images analyzed using the ImageJ software. The results obtained enable identification of the laser-material interaction spots, and characterization of the laser induced changes in the materials investigated.

Human activities in various environments, including space, call for more detailed research. The role of fibers in contemporary communications, medicine, and industry increases. Fibers, their connections and fused optics components have one type of tasks - the transmission of information and power. The other type of tasks is reserved for fiber lasers: quantum generators and amplifiers. The third type of tasks is for fiber sensors, including high energy nuclear physics.
