AB  - Designated as the most harmful for health, PM2.5 aerosol fraction was a subject of our study. It was collected for all four seasons during 2014/15 in the suburban area of Belgrade (Serbia) and analysed for Al, Si, P, S, Cl, K, Ca, Ti, V, Cr, Mn, Fe, Ni, Cu, Zn, Br, As, Ba and Pb elements and for NH4+, NO3− and SO42− ions by particle-induced X-ray emission and ion chromatography techniques, respectively. Obtained concentrations have been treated by a combination of several receptor-oriented models to reveal source contributions to the suburban PM2.5 at different spatial scales. Applied positive matrix factorization analysis indicated five main groups of emission sources: biomass burning (14.5%), traffic (3.9%), regional combustion/secondary sulphates (28.8%), local combustion/secondary nitrates (29.7%) and soil (5.4%). Local heating units had been pointed out as dominant contributors by long-range transport and ground-wind circulation analyses. Air masses circulating over the Balkan Peninsula denoted regional emissions as responsible for the high concentrations of secondary sulphates. Local and long-range transport analyses combined suggested that the BB and the LC/NO3 originated from the wider urban area. Several Saharan dust episodes were detected as well. Presented results might be a basis for the development of air pollution mitigation strategies in the continental Balkan area, considered one of the most polluted and under-investigated European regions.

Cadmium retention and distribution in contaminated soil: effects and interactions of soil properties, contamination level, aging time and in situ immobilization agents

AB  - As soil cadmium (Cd) contamination becomes a serious concern and one of the significant environmental pollution issues all over the world, knowledge of the basic chemistry, origin, inputs, sources, quantity, chemical forms, reactions, as well as the fate and transport of Cd in different types of soil is crucial for better understanding Cd bioavailability, health risks and remedial options. This study aimed to increase the current knowledge on the complex interdependence between the factors affecting behavior, transport and fate of Cd in the soil and to test and compare the performance of the stabilization agents in different soil types. Soils demonstrated various sorption affinity and capacity for Cd accumulation, which proved to be positively correlated with soil pH and the cation exchange capacity (CEC). With increasing levels of contamination, sequential extraction analysis showed the highest increase of relative Cd amounts in the exchangeable fraction regardless of the soil properties, suggesting that added Cd is principally associated with the easily accessible and mobile fraction. For different initial Cd concentrations and soil types, Cd sorption reached the quasi-equilibrium within 24 h of contact. Prolonged aging (two months) influenced the natural stabilization of Cd in all types of soil, but only at low contamination level. The application of both, conventional (slaked lime Ca(OH) 2 ) and alternative phosphate-rich (annealed bovine bones B 400 ) amendments, resulted in Cd relocation and reduction of exchangeable Cd content. Although the effect was smaller when apatite amendment was utilized, observed re-distribution of Cd to more stable soil fractions is preferable for achieving long-term stabilization. Cd concentrations extracted in exchangeable and acid soluble fractions after the treatments of contaminated soil samples suggest that the practical applicability of in situ immobilization depends on the soil properties and the level of contamination, as well as that effect, should be monitored for the possible re-mobilization of Cd. © 2019 Elsevier Inc.

AB  - In this study, unmodified lemon peel, as agro-industrial waste, was used to investigate removal efficiency of copper ions from aqueous solutions and mining wastewater. The effects of solution pH, adsorption time, metal ion concentration and dose of adsorbent on sorption were studied in batch experiments. The maximum Langmuir adsorption capacity was evaluated to be 13.2 mg/g at optimum contact time of 15 min. The maximum removal of copper ions from mining-wastewater at natural pH (pH3) was 89%, indicating that lemon peel could be employed as an effective low-cost adsorbent for removal of copper ions from wastewater at acidic conditions. © 2019 The Korean Society of Industrial and Engineering Chemistry

U radu su prikazani rezultati gamaspektrometrijskog merenja prirodnih radionuklida u 94 uzorka građevinskog materijala (drvo, pesak, šljunak, opeka, mermer, granit, beton, staklo) koji je u upotrebi u Srbiji. Uzorci su analizirani u periodu 2016-2019. godine i opseg izmerenih aktivnosti radionuklida bio je: 226Ra (5-180)Bq/kg, 232Th(8-260)Bq/kg40K, (20-1480)Bq/kg. Za sve materijale određen je gama indeks i rezultati su upoređeni sa relevantnim podacima iz literature i propisa.

The  paper  presents  the  results  of gamma  ray spectrometry measurement of natural radionuclides in 94 samples of building materials (wood, sand, gravel, brick, concrete,marble, granite, glass) collected from the territory of Serbia in the period from 2016 to 2019. The activity concentrations for 226Ra, 232Th and 40K  from  the  building  materials  ranged  from  (5-180)  Bq/kg, (8-260)  Bq/kg, (20-1480) Bq/kg, respectively.For all materials, a gamma index was determined and the results are compared with the relevant literature and regulation data.

AB  - The objective of the present study was to determine the impact of cadmium (Cd) concentration in the soil on its uptake by tobacco plants, and to compare the ability of diverse extraction procedures for determining Cd bioavailability and predicting soil-to-plant transfer and Cd plant concentrations. The pseudo-total digestion procedure, modified Tessier sequential extraction and six standard single-extraction tests for estimation of metal mobility and bioavailability were used for the leaching of Cd from a native soil, as well as samples artificially contaminated over a wide range of Cd concentrations. The results of various leaching tests were compared between each other, as well as with the amounts of Cd taken up by tobacco plants in pot experiments. In the native soil sample, most of the Cd was found in fractions not readily available under natural conditions, but with increasing pollution level, Cd amounts in readily available forms increased. With increasing concentrations of Cd in the soil, the quantity of pollutant taken up in tobacco also increased, while the transfer factor (TF) decreased. Linear and non-linear empirical models were developed for predicting the uptake of Cd by tobacco plants based on the results of selected leaching tests. The non-linear equations for ISO 14870 (diethylenetriaminepentaacetic acid extraction - DTPA), ISO/TS 21268-2 (CaCl2 leaching procedure), US EPA 1311 (toxicity characteristic leaching procedure - TCLP) single step extractions, and the sum of the first two fractions of the sequential extraction, exhibited the best correlation with the experimentally determined concentrations of Cd in plants over the entire range of pollutant concentrations. This approach can improve and facilitate the assessment of human exposure to Cd by tobacco smoking, but may also have wider applicability in predicting soil-to-plant transfer.

abstract = "The objective of the present study was to determine the impact of cadmium (Cd) concentration in the soil on its uptake by tobacco plants, and to compare the ability of diverse extraction procedures for determining Cd bioavailability and predicting soil-to-plant transfer and Cd plant concentrations. The pseudo-total digestion procedure, modified Tessier sequential extraction and six standard single-extraction tests for estimation of metal mobility and bioavailability were used for the leaching of Cd from a native soil, as well as samples artificially contaminated over a wide range of Cd concentrations. The results of various leaching tests were compared between each other, as well as with the amounts of Cd taken up by tobacco plants in pot experiments. In the native soil sample, most of the Cd was found in fractions not readily available under natural conditions, but with increasing pollution level, Cd amounts in readily available forms increased. With increasing concentrations of Cd in the soil, the quantity of pollutant taken up in tobacco also increased, while the transfer factor (TF) decreased. Linear and non-linear empirical models were developed for predicting the uptake of Cd by tobacco plants based on the results of selected leaching tests. In this study, the effectiveness of rinsed red mud (RBRM) and annealed animal bones (B400) was compared in terms of Cu, Pb and Ni stabilization in two contaminated soils with contrasting properties Dystric Cambisol (CM dy) and Rendzic Leptosol (LP rz). The mobility of metals in unamended soil samples (control) and samples amended with 1% and 5% of selected additives were compared using sequential extraction protocol. The relative content of metals in readily and potentially available fractions was higher in CM dy (62% Pb, 13% Cu, and 31% Ni in exchangeable fraction) than in LP rz (< 5% of Pb, Cu, Ni in exchangeable fraction). In CM dy, both additives have caused a decrease in metal mobility with an increase of their doses. The effect of 5% sorbent addition was most pronounced related to Pb immobilization, provoking decrease of exchangeable Pb content to < 10%. Furthermore, B400 addition has redistributed investigated metals from the exchangeable to the residual phase more effectively than RBRM, and its effect on metal mobility decreased in the order Pb > Cu > Ni. Amending of LP rz soil had limited effects with no apparent decrease in exchangeable metal content. The effects of soil type variation, the type of additive and the additive dose onto metal mobility were compared according to ANOVA results. The content of readily and potentially available forms of metals was found to be (i) significantly correlated with all investigated variables for Pb, (ii) significantly correlated with soil type for Cu, and (iii) not in significant correlation with selected variables for Ni. AB  - The shell of Lagenaria vulgaris (LV) plant was used as biosorbent for strontium removal from aqueous solutions. Chemical structure of the biosorbent's surface was characterized by the means of FTIR and Boehm's titrations. SEM-EDX technique was used to study the morphology and elemental composition of the material. The analyses pointed out to abundance of acidic functional groups which are charged in solution and hence responsible for ionic exchange of Sr(II) ions. Sorption was examined by varying initial concentrations of Sr(II) in solutions, sorbent's loadings, pH, and contacting times. Equilibrium of the process was attained in the first 10 min of contacting and followed pseudo-second order and Chrastil's kinetic models. It was established that sorption onto aLVB was heterogenous by nature and fitted well to Freundlich and Sips isotherm models with maximum sorption capacity of 29.55 mg g(-1). Sorption potentail was kept high after six cycles when acidic desorbents were used.

Modelling of cations retention in ion chromatography with methanesulfonic acid as eluent

AB  - The two retention models, the linear solvent strength model (LSS) and the quadratic relationship, in addition to artificial neural network (ANN) approach, were compared in their ability to predict the retention behaviour of common cations (Li, Na, NH4, K, Mg and Ca) in isocratic ion chromatography using the methanesulfonic acid (MSA) eluent. Over wide variations in the MSA concentration, the quadratic model shows a quite good prediction power. LSS can be used only for monovalent cations and in the proximity of the experimental design point. ANN fails to predict the retention for the data not included in the training set. To find the optimal conditions in the experimental design, the normalized resolution product as a chromatographic objective function was employed. The optimum MSA concentration in the eluent on a Dionex CS12 column was found to be 18 mM, with the total analysis time of less than 10 min.

Pectin-polyvinylpyrrolidone films: A sustainable approach to the development of biobased packaging materials

AB  - In this work, the new biodegradable blend films composed of natural polymer pectin and synthetic polymer polyvinylpyrrolidone were obtained through casting process. The concentration of glycerol in all formulations was constant (2% v/v), while the amount of polyvinylpyrrolidone varied from 20 to 60% by mass of pectin. The molecular interactions between two components were elucidated by FTIR-ATR spectroscopy, while functional properties of these films were carried out by determination of puncture resistance, tensile strength, thermal stability, water vapor barrier, wettability and printability. The blending of pectin with PVP led to an improvement of mechanical resistance, barrier properties and hydrophobicity of these films for 57%, 58 and 24%, respectively, remaining adequate thermal stability. Since pectin and PVP are nontoxic, food-grade and biodegradable materials, this research present an ecosustainable approach to provide films with satisfied physical properties for use as packaging material of non-food products, such as water-treatment products (detergents, biocides, agrochemical compounds). Natural sorbents modified by divalent Cu2+- and Zn2+- ions and their corresponding antimicrobial activity

AB  - The objective of this study was to investigate the modification of materials used in wastewater treatment for possible antimicrobial application(s). Granulated activated carbon (GAC) and natural clinoptilolite (CLI) were activated using Cu2+-and Zn2+-ions and the disinfection ability of the resulting materials was tested. Studies of the sorption and desorption kinetics were performed in order to determine and clarify the antimicrobial activity of the metal-activated sorbents. The exact sorption capacities of the selected sorbents, GAC and CLI, activated through use of Cu2+-ions, were 15.90 and 3.60 mg/g, respectively, while for the materials activated by Zn2+-ions, the corresponding capacities were 14.00 and 4.72 mg/g,. The desorption rates were 2 and 3 orders of magnitude lower than their sorption efficacy for the Cu2+-, and Zn2+-activated sorbents, respectively. The intermediate sorption capacity and low desorption rate indicated that the overall antimicrobial activity of the metal-modified sorbents was a result of metal ions immobilized onto surface sites. The effect of antimicrobial activity of free ions desorbed from the metal-activated surface may thus be disregarded. The antimicrobial activities of Cu/GAC, Zn/GAC, Cu/CLI and Zn/ CLI were also tested against Escherichia coli, Staphylococcus aureus, and Candida albicans. After 15 min exposure, the highest levels of cell inactivation were obtained through the Cu/CLI and the Cu/GAC against E. coli, 100.0 and 98.24%, respectively. However, for S. aureus and yeast cell inactivation, all Cu2+-and Zn2+-activated sorbents proved to be unsatisfactory. A characterization of the sorbents was performed by Xray diffraction (XRD), X-ray photo electron spectroscopy (XPS), and field emission scanning electron microscopy (FE-SEM). A concentration of the adsorbed and released ions was determined by inductively coupled plasma-optical emission spectroscopy (ICP-OES) and mass spectrometry (ICP-MS). The results showed that the antimicrobial performance of the activated sorbents depended on the surface characteristics of the material, which itself designates the distribution and the bioavailability of the activating agent. abstract = "The objective of this study was to investigate the modification of materials used in wastewater treatment for possible antimicrobial application(s). Granulated activated carbon (GAC) and natural clinoptilolite (CLI) were activated using Cu2+-and Zn2+-ions and the disinfection ability of the resulting materials was tested. Studies of the sorption and desorption kinetics were performed in order to determine and clarify the antimicrobial activity of the metal-activated sorbents. The exact sorption capacities of the selected sorbents, GAC and CLI, activated through use of Cu2+-ions, were 15.90 and 3.60 mg/g, respectively, while for the materials activated by Zn2+-ions, the corresponding capacities were 14.00 and 4.72 mg/g,. The desorption rates were 2 and 3 orders of magnitude lower than their sorption efficacy for the Cu2+-, and Zn2+-activated sorbents, respectively. The intermediate sorption capacity and low desorption rate indicated that the overall antimicrobial activity of the metal-modified sorbents was a result of metal ions immobilized onto surface sites. The effect of antimicrobial activity of free ions desorbed from the metal-activated surface may thus be disregarded. The antimicrobial activities of Cu/GAC, Zn/GAC, Cu/CLI and Zn/ CLI were also tested against Escherichia coli, Staphylococcus aureus, and Candida albicans. After 15 min exposure, the highest levels of cell inactivation were obtained through the Cu/CLI and the Cu/GAC against E. coli, 100.0 and 98.24%, respectively. However, for S. aureus and yeast cell inactivation, all Cu2+-and Zn2+-activated sorbents proved to be unsatisfactory. A characterization of the sorbents was performed by Xray diffraction (XRD), X-ray photo electron spectroscopy (XPS), and field emission scanning electron microscopy (FE-SEM). A concentration of the adsorbed and released ions was determined by inductively coupled plasma-optical emission spectroscopy (ICP-OES) and mass spectrometry (ICP-MS). The results showed that the antimicrobial performance of the activated sorbents depended on the surface characteristics of the material, which itself designates the distribution and the bioavailability of the activating agent. AB  - Macroporous copolymers of poly[(glycidyl methacrylate)-co-(ethylene glycol dimethacrylate)] (PGME) with various crosslinker (ethylene glycol dimethacrylate) concentrations and porosity parameters and additionally functionalized with hexamethylene diamine (PGME-HD) were tested as potential Cr(VI) oxyanion sorbents from aqueous solutions. Kinetics of Cr(VI) sorption was investigated in the temperature range 298-343 K and the results were fitted to chemical reaction and particle diffusion models. The Cr(VI) sorption obeys the pseudo-second-order model with definite influence of pore diffusion. A temperature rise promotes chromium removal, with a maximum experimental uptake capacity of 4.21 mmol g(-1) at 343 K for the sample with the highest amino group concentration. Equilibrium data were analysed with Langmuir, Freundlich and Temkin adsorption isotherm models. Thermodynamic parameters, i.e. Gibbs free energy (G(0)), enthalpy (H-0) and entropy change (S-0) and activation energy of sorption (E-a), were calculated. The Cr(VI) adsorption onto PGME-HD was found to be spontaneous and endothermic, with increased randomness in the system. Desorption experiments show that chromium anion sorption was reversible and the PGME-HD sample GMA 60 HD was easily regenerated with 0.1 mol L-1 NaOH up to 90% recovery in the fourth sorption/desorption cycle. AB  - Magnetic macroporous crosslinked copolymer glycidyl methacrylate (GMA) and ethylene glycol dimethacrylate (EGDMA) samples with different magnetite content were prepared by suspension copolymerization and functionalized with diethylene triamine. Samples were characterized by elemental analysis, mercury porosimetry, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) analysis, scanning electron microscopy with energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy, transmission electron microscopy, SQUID magnetometry and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). The selected amino-functionalized sample was tested as a potential sorbent for the Mo(VI) and Re(VII) oxyanions from aqueous solutions. The influence of pH, ionic strength and possible interfering of cations and anions was investigated. Equilibrium data were analyzed with Langmuir, Freundlich and Tempkin adsorption isotherm models. Sorption studies were carried out in a batch competitive experiments, in the pH range 1-8, at 298 K. Obtained results indicate that 92% of Re(VII) and 98% of Mo(VI) were sorbed at pH 2. AB  - The anthraquinone dye, C.I. Acid Blue 111, was subjected to electrochemical oxidation using an IrOx electrode and sodium sulphate or sodium chloride as electrolytes. The effects of different operating parameters on the rate of dye decolorization, such as applied current, electrolyte concentration, and initial pH were studied. The dye concentration during the study was followed via ultraviolet-visible spectroscopy. The changes in the dye molecule during electrochemical oxidation were analyzed by Fourier Transformation-infrared spectroscopy. The level of mineralization after electrochemical oxidation was established by total organic carbon analysis.

AB  - In this study, pectin based films including different amounts of sodium alginate were prepared by casting method. All the films, with and without polyglycerol as plasticizer, were crosslinked with zinc ions in order to extend their potential functionality. The development of junction points, occurring during the crosslinking process with zinc ions, induced the increasing of free volume with following changing in chemico-physical properties of films. The inclusion of alginate in pectin based formulations improved the strength of zinc ions crosslinking network, whereas the addition of polyglycerol significantly improved mechanical performance. Finally, zinc-crosslinked films evidenced antimicrobial activity against the most common exploited pathogens: Staphylococcus Aureus, Escherichia Coli and Candida Albicans. These results suggest that zinc-crosslinked based films can be exploitable as novel bio-active biomaterials for protection and disinfection of medical devices. (C) 2016 Elsevier Ltd. AB  - The distribution of elements in soil fractions affects their mobility and availability and thus their potential beneficial or harmful impact on ecosystems, biota and humans. Different mineralogical and chemical characteristics of soil influence elemental distribution. In the present study, chemical speciation of macro and micro elements (Al, Fe, Mn, K, Cd, Cr, Cu, Li, Ba, Ni, Pb and Zn) in unpolluted soils of different types, collected from the territory of the Republic of Serbia, were analysed by sequential extraction procedure. The impact of the physicochemical soil properties on the content, distribution, mobility and availability of elements was investigated. Principal component analysis was employed for the evaluation and characterization of the experimental data, understanding of the relationships between soil properties and the distribution, affiliation and connection of the elements. Finally, an artificial neural network (ANN) model was developed to explore the applicability of this approach for the prediction of the elemental distribution based on soil properties. Good agreement between the model and the experimental results implied that the ANN could be considered as a useful tool for control and prediction purposes. (C) 2016 Elsevier B.V. The influence of combined effects of two mobile phase factors, the total eluent concentration (2-6 mM) and the carbonate/bicaronate ratio from 1:9 to 9:1 (which correspond to pH range 9.35-11.27), on the IC separation was studied. The multiple species analyte/eluent model that takes into account ion-exchange equilibria of the eluent and sample anions was used. In order to estimate the parameters in the model, a non-linear fitting of the retention data, obtained at two-factor three-level experimental design, was applied. To find the optimal conditions in the experimental design, the normalized resolution product as a chromatographic objective function was employed. This criterion includes both the individual peak resolution and the total analysis time. A good agreement between experimental and simulated chromatograms was obtained.

Removal of Pb2+ from aqueous solution by P(HEA/IA) hydrogels

AB  - A series of poly(2-hydroxyethyl acrylate-co-itaconic acid), P(HEA/IA), hydrogels with different HEA/IA ratio, were synthesized using free radical crosslinking/copolymerization and investigated as sorbents for Pb2+ from aqueous solutions. Hydrogels were characterized using DMA, FTIR, DSC, SEM and AFM. The adsorption was found to be highly dependent on hydrogel composition, solution pH, sorbent weight, ionic strength and contact time. Five isotherm models, Langmuir, Freundlich, Redlich-Peterson, Temkin and Dubinin-Radushkevich, were applied to the sorption data. The best fit was obtained with Redlich-Peterson isotherm. The separation factor, RL, value indicated favorable sorption for Pb2+. The maximum sorption capacities were 392.2 and 409.8 mg/g for P(HEA/2IA) and P(HEA/10IA), respectively. Kinetic data showed best fit with pseudo-second-order model. Thermodynamic studies revealed that the reaction was exothermic and proceeds with a decrease in entropy. Moreover, P(HEA/IA) hydrogel showed the most pronounced sorption toward Pb2+ from environment containing Cu2+, Zn2+, Cd2+, Ni2+ and Co2+. Sorption/desorption experiments, showed that the P(HEA/IA) hydrogels could be reused without significant loss of the initial properties even after three adsorption-desorption cycles.

AB  - A novel method combining a traditional immersion precipitation process for making membranes with photopolymerization and crosslinking of functional monomers included in the casting solution was used to prepare asymmetric polyethersulfone membranes with submicron particles incorporating glycidyl methacrylate copolymer. In order to introduce sulfonic groups, the epoxide rings of glycidyl methacrylate were opened using two methods. The first method was functionalization with sodium sulfite, and the second was functionalization with sulfuric acid and then grafting with 2-acrylamido-2-methylpropanesulfonic acid. The obtained membranes were characterized using infrared spectroscopy, conductometric titration and water permeability measurements. Scanning electron microscopy and atomic force microscopy were used to investigate the surface morphology and topology of the membranes. Dynamic adsorption of rhodamine B as a model dye was used to demonstrate the suitability of these novel membranes for membrane adsorption since the adsorption capacity for dye cations was much better for the membranes functionalized with sodium sulfite and the membranes grafted with 2-acrylamido-2-methylpropanesulfonic acid compared to the non-functionalized membranes.

AB  - This article described the synthesis and characterization of new copolymer hydrogels containing two hydrophilic units-methacrylic acid (MAA) and 2-Acrylamido-2-methylpropane sulfonic acid (AMPS). The resulting hydrogels were characterized by various techniques: FTIR, Elemental analysis, SEM, Dynamic Molecular simulation, Dynamic-Mechanical analysis and DSC in order to confirm the structure of hydrogels and to predict the best ratio composition with enhanced physical chemical properties. The swelling behavior in water was studied as a function of ratio of monomers and their concentration in medium. An increase in AMPS content led to expansion of network and increase in swelling degree capacity in water. An increase in AMPS content did not significantly influence the glass transition temperature of copolymers, indicated that the physical properties of initial components were preserved. The equal amount of monomers contributed to the highest strength of hydrogels. Meanwhile, the introduction of AMPS to the system was an effective method for improving the performances of the poly(methacrylic acid)- based hydrogels. (C) 2016 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

AB  - Films of chitosan and poly(itaconic acid) in various different ratios have been prepared by membrane casting. The enhancement in the proton conductivity and uptake of water was observed as the content of poly(itaconic acid) in film increased. The proton conductivity of chitosan/poly(itaconic) films was comparative with commercially used synthetic sensor Nafion 117. Films showed thermal stability up to 185 degrees C. The proposed experiment might open up a new possibility for use of chitosan/poly(itaconic acid) films as a biosensors due to their advantages: low cost, simple preparation and good conductive sensitivity. The proton conductivity of chitosan/poly(itaconic) films was comparative with commercially used synthetic sensor Nafion 117. Films showed thermal stability up to 185 degrees C. The proposed experiment might open up a new possibility for use of chitosan/poly(itaconic acid) films as a biosensors due to their advantages: low cost, simple preparation and good conductive sensitivity. AB  - The mechanism of Cu(II), Cd(II) and Pb(II) ions sorption from aqueous solutions by macroporous poly(glycidyl methacrylate-co-ethylene glycol dimethacrylate) (PGME) functionalized by reaction of the pendant epoxy groups with diethylene triamine (PGME-deta) was studied using X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) analysis. Atomic force microscopy (AFM) and scanning energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (SEM-EDX) were used for the determination of surface morphology of the copolymer particles. The sorption behavior of heavy metals Cu(II), Cd(II) and Pb(II) ions sorption was investigated in batch static experiments under non-competitive conditions at room temperature (298 K). The obtained results were fitted to pseudo-first order, pseudo-second order and intraparticle diffusion kinetic model. The kinetics studies showed that Cu(II), Cd(II) and Pb(II) sorption obeys the pseudo-second-order model under all investigated operating conditions with evident influence of pore diffusion. AB  - The activity concentrations of natural radionuclides (K-40, Pb-210, Po-210, Ra-226 and Ra-228) in 17 most frequently used cigarette brands in Serbia and corresponding effective doses due to smoke inhalation are presented. The mean annual effective doses for Pb-210 and Po-210 were estimated to be 47.3 and 724 A mu Sv y(-1) for Pb-210 and Po-210, respectively. Serbia currently has the highest smoking rate in the world. The results of this study indicate the high contribution of the annual effective dose due to smoke inhalation to the total inhalation dose from natural radionuclides. The more effective implementation of actions for reducing smoking prevalence in Serbia is highly needed.

AB  - In this work, the reliability of image analysis for the numerical evaluation of Basic Red 46 (BR 46) dye adsorption process was studied. The image analysis was carried out on dye adsorbed onto SBA-15 mesoporous silica, by use of Image-Pro Plus software. Pixel-specific calibration curves were derived and used to obtain dye concentration from the three different primary color channels (red, green, and blue) recorded at each pixel. In order to establish credibility of this method for quantification of adsorption processes, these data were compared with dye adsorption parameters obtained by UV-vis analysis. Among the three different primary color channels, the best results were obtained when the blue color channel was applied. In this case, the average relative error was 0.86%. The obtained results showed that a dye adsorbed on SBA-15 can be determined with the use of Image-Pro Plus with the same sensitivity as with the use of spectrophotometric analysis for the determination of changes in dye concentration during the adsorption process.

AB  - Pollution control and water purification are the main concerns associated with hazardous component eliminations from wastewaters which have inspired the research, among the others, on various clay minerals as useful adsorbents. The aim of this study was to examine morphological, structural, adsorption, and electrochemical characteristics of serpentinite in order to check its potential for removal of cadmium and textile dyes from synthetic waters. SEM technique has provided a detailed insight into the surface morphology of serpentinite indicating irregularly shaped particles and lamellar aggregates which are characteristic of lizardite mineral. Crystal phases detected in composition of serpentinite by using XRD technique are lizardite and tiny amount of periclase. Serpentinite adsorption characteristics were investigated towards Cd2+ and anionic textile dyes (Procion red MX-5B, Procion orange and Ramazol black) in aqueous solutions. The main goal of the study was the reliable removal of hazardous Cd2+ at low initial concentrations (up to 200 mu g/dm(3)). Textile dyes were taken as the models of anionic organic pollutants in water. All the adsorption experiments were carried out in batch conditions by varying initial parameters such as concentration of pollutant, contact time, mass of adsorbent and pH. Based on the obtained results, serpentinite has proven to be efficient adsorbent with removal efficiency over 98% for the selected pollutants. Native serpentinite was further modified in order to obtain forsterite. Electrochemical characteristics of serpentinite and forsterite were examined by using cyclic voltammetry of solution of 0.1 M H2SO4 as acidic supporting electrolyte and K-4[Fe(CN)(6)] which was chosen as a redox model compound. Due to its specific structure, surface groups, morphology, and non-stoichiometric composition, serpentinite and forsterite exhibited prominent electrocatalytic activity. (C) 2016 Elsevier B.V.
