AB - In this study, nanochitosan dots (ChiDs) were synthesized using gamma rays and encapsulated in bacterial cellulose (BC) polymer matrix for antibiofilm potential in photodynamic therapy. The composites were analyzed for structural changes using SEM, AFM, FTIR, XRD, EPR, and porosity measurements. Additionally, ChiD release was assessed. The results showed that the chemical composition remained unaltered, but ChiD agglomerates embedded in BC changed shape (1.5–2.5 µm). Bacterial cellulose fibers became deformed and interconnected, with increased surface roughness and porosity and decreased crystallinity. No singlet oxygen formation was observed, and the total amount of released ChiD was up to 16.10%. Antibiofilm activity was higher under green light, with reductions ranging from 48 to 57% under blue light and 78 to 85% under green light. Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus was the most sensitive strain. The new photoactive composite hydrogels show promising potential for combating biofilm-related infections.

AB - Carbon quantum dots (CQDs) are well known as a promising therapeutic agent due to their excellent pro-oxidant, antioxidant, antibacterial and anticancer properties under visible light irradiation. This material is easy to produce by several bottom-up or top-down methods. In this study, we used citric acid as starting precursor to synthesize aqueous carbon quantum dots dispersion by pyrolysis at 210 ◦C. Atomic force microscopy and XPS analyses revealed that CQDs synthesized are quasi-spherical with typical diameter of 9 nm and lots of C–O and C––O functional groups distributed over the basal plane and edges of the dots. Here, we investigated the antiviral properties of CQDs against cytomegalovirus (CMV). The pre-treatment with CQDs upregulates interferonstimulated genes (ISG), resulting in better virus control. Cellular defence against cytomegalovirus of CQDs pre-treated cells is increased in a dose-dependent manner. Our results reveal high biocompatibility and potent in vitro antiviral properties of CQDs.

AB - The cost of treatment of antibiotic-resistant pathogens is on the level of tens of billions of dollars at the moment. It is of special interest to reduce or solve this problem using antimicrobial coatings, especially in hospitals or other healthcare facilities. The bacteria can transfer from medical staff or contaminated surfaces to patients. In this paper, we focused our attention on the antibacterial and antibiofouling activities of two types of photodynamic polyurethane composite films doped with carbon polymerized dots (CPDs) and fullerene C60. Detailed atomic force, electrostatic force and viscoelastic microscopy revealed topology, nanoelectrical and nanomechanical properties of used fillers and composites. A relationship between the electronic structure of the nanocarbon fillers and the antibacterial and antibiofouling activities of the composites was established. Thorough spectroscopic analysis of reactive oxygen species (ROS) generation was conducted for both composite films, and it was found that both of them were potent antibacterial agents against nosocomial bacteria (Klebsiela pneumoniae, Proteus mirabilis, Salmonela enterica, Enterococcus faecalis, Enterococcus epidermis and Pseudomonas aeruginosa). Antibiofouling testing of composite films indicated that the CPDs/PU composite films eradicated almost completely the biofilms of Pseudomonas aeruginosa and Staphylococcus aureus and about 50% of Escherichia coli biofilms.

AB - In this paper, an efficient and environmentally friendly approach to the microwave-assisted synthesis of zinc
phthalocyanine (ZnPc) was developed to compare the features and changes in morphology, phase, and optical
properties with crystals obtained under conventional synthesis. Well-crystallized with high yield and purity ZnPc
in β-form was obtained by fast and efficient microwave-assisted procedure after five minutes of microwave
heating. Studies including electron paramagnet resonance (EPR) indicated the improved photosensitizing potential of microwave-produced crystals, creating viable candidates for photodynamic treatment. Gamma rays
aftereffect confirmed the stability of the ZnPc making them versatile in their application in medicine and sophisticated technology.

AB - Carbon quantum dots as a novel type of carbon nanomaterials have attracted the attention of many researchers because of their unique optical, antibacterial, and anticancer properties as well as their biocompatibility. In this study, for the first time, carbon quantum dots were prepared from o-phenylenediamine dissolved in toluene by a solvothermal route. Subsequently, the prepared carbon quantum dots were encapsulated into polyurethane films by a swelling–encapsulation–shrink method. Analyses of the results obtained by different characterization methods (AFM, TEM, EDS, FTIR, photoluminescence, and EPR) indicate the significant influence of the precursor on structural, chemical, and optical properties. Antibacterial and cytotoxicity tests showed that these dots did not have any antibacterial potential, because of the low extent of reactive oxygen species production, and showed low dark cytotoxicity. By investigating the cellular uptake, it was established that these dots penetrated the HeLa cells and could be used as probes for bioimaging.

AB - Nowadays, it is a great challenge to develop new medicines for treating various infectious diseases. The treatment of these diseases is of utmost interest to further prevent the development of multi-drug resistance in different pathogens. Carbon quantum dots, as a new member of the carbon nanomaterials family, can potentially be used as a highly promising visible-light-triggered antibacterial agent. In this work, the results of antibacterial and cytotoxic activities of gamma-ray-irradiated carbon quantum dots are presented. Carbon quantum dots (CQDs) were synthesized from citric acid by a pyrolysis procedure and irradiated by gamma rays at different doses (25, 50, 100 and 200 kGy). Structure, chemical composition and optical properties were investigated by atomic force microscopy, transmission electron microscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, Raman spectroscopy, UV-Vis spectrometry and photoluminescence. Structural analysis showed that CQDs have a spherical-like shape and dose-dependent average diameters and heights. Antibacterial tests showed that all irradiated dots had antibacterial activity but CQDs irradiated with dose of 100 kGy had antibacterial activity against all seven pathogen-reference bacterial strains. Gamma-ray-modified CQDs did not show any cytotoxicity toward human fetal-originated MRC-5 cells. Moreover, fluorescence microscopy showed excellent cellular uptake of CQDs irradiated with doses of 25 and 200 kGy into MRC-5 cells.

Moreover, fluorescence microscopy showed excellent cellular uptake of CQDs irradiated with doses of 25 and 200 kGy into MRC-5 cells.",

AB - Due to the increasing number of bacterial infections and the development of resistivity toward antibiotics, new materials and approaches for treatments must be urgently developed. The production of new materials should be ecologically friendly considering overall pollution with chemicals and economically acceptable and accessible to the wide population. Thus, the possibility of using biocompatible graphene quantum dots (GQDs) as an agent in photodynamic therapy was studied. First, dots were obtained using electrochemical cutting of graphite. In only one synthetic step using gamma irradiation, GQDs were doped with N atoms without any reagent. Obtained dots showed blue photoluminescence, with a diameter of 19–89 nm and optical band gap of 3.23–4.73 eV, featuring oxygen-containing, amino, and amide functional groups. Dots showed antioxidative activity; they quenched •OH at a concentration of 10 μg·mL−1, scavenged DPPH• radicals even at 5 μg·mL−1, and caused discoloration of KMnO4 at 30 μg·mL−1. Under light irradiation, dots were able to produce singlet oxygen, which remained stable for 10 min. Photoinduced effects by GQDs were studied on several bacterial strains (Listeria monocytogenes, Bacillus cereus, clinical strains of Streptococcus mutans, S. pyogenes, and S. sangunis, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, and one yeast strain Candida albicans) but antibacterial effects were not noticed.

AB - Due to their unique structural properties bacterial cellulose (BC) hydrogels find possible usage in many fields such as cosmetology, food industry, or medicine. In this study, photoactive BC hydrogels are investigated through modifications of their structural, mechanical, and pro-oxidant properties resulting from graphene quantum dots (GQDs) encapsulation. Detailed structural analysis is conducted by atomic force microscopy, transmission electron microscopy and scanning electron microscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, and X-ray diffraction method. Dynamic mechanical analysis is performed to study the changes in storage modulus, loss modulus and tan δ. Pro-oxidative properties of new designed composites are tested by electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR). Structural and mechanical analyses show successful encapsulation of GQDs into BC whereas EPR measurements indicate high potential of these composites for singlet oxygen production.

AB - Development of new types of antimicrobial coatings is of utmost importance due to increasing problems with pathogen transmission from various infectious surfaces to human beings. In this study, new types of highly potent antimicrobial polyurethane composite films encapsulated by hydrophobic riboflavin-based carbon polymer dots are presented. Detailed structural, optical, antimicrobial, and cytotoxic investigations of these composites were conducted. Low-power blue light triggered the composites to eradicate Escherichia coli in 30 min, whereas the same effect toward Staphylococcus aureus was reached after 60 min. These composites also show low toxicity against MRC-5 cells. In this way, RF-CPD composites can be used for sterilization of highly touched objects in the healthcare industry.

AB - Considering the urgency of finding a cure for vicious diseases such as tumors, we have synthesized and characterized a small series of new copper(ii) complexes with biologically important ligands such as acylpyruvate. In addition to this, we used another four copper(ii) complexes, with ligands of the same type to examine the antitumor potential. The antitumor potential of the copper(ii) complexes was examined on three tumor cell lines and one normal human cell line using the MTT assay. All seven tested complexes showed very good cytotoxic effects. Two copper complexes that showed the best antitumor potential were selected for further testing that showed the best potential for potential application in the future. The mechanism of activity of these complexes was examined in detail using tests such as cell cycle, ROS level, oxidative DNA damage, and proteins related to hypoxia analysis. In addition, we examined the binding abilities of these complexes with biomolecules (Guo, Ino, 5′-GMP, BSA, and DNA). The results showed that the tested compounds bind strongly to DNA molecules through intercalation. Also, it has been shown that the tested compounds adequately bind to the BSA molecule, which indicates an even greater potential for some future application of these compounds in clinical practice. © 2022 The Royal Society of Chemistry.

AB - In order to discover new therapeutically active agents a series of novel copper(II) complexes with 3,4-dihydro-2(1H)-quinoxalinones were synthesized. All complexes were characterized by IR and EPR spectroscopic techniques and examined for their cytotoxic effect on human cancer cell lines HeLa, LS174, A549 and normal fibroblasts (MRC-5). For further examination of the cytotoxic mechanisms of novel complexes, three of them were chosen for analysing their effects on the distribution of HeLa cells in the cell cycle phases. The results of the flow cytometry analysis suggest that tested complexes lead to time-dependent accumulation of the cells in S and G2/M phases. The strongest accumulation effect showed complex 2d after 48 h of incubation. Competitive experiments with ethidium bromide (EB) indicated that tested compound 2d have affinity to displace EB from the EB-DNA complex through intercalation. Also, the binding parameters values for 2d-BSA complex showed that a reversible 2d-BSA complex is formed and ligand 2d can be stored and carried by BSA.

Competitive experiments with ethidium bromide (EB) indicated that tested compound 2d have affinity to displace EB from the EB-DNA complex through intercalation. Also, the binding parameters values for 2d-BSA complex showed that a reversible 2d-BSA complex is formed and ligand 2d can be stored and carried by BSA.",

AB - Experimental and theoretical methods have been used to investigate the octahedral tilting and related effects of Ca 1-x Gdx MnO3 (x = 0.05; 0.1; 0.15; 0.2) compound. Both methods have shown that orthorhombic-perovskite structure (space group Pnma) is the most stable form and according to Glazer's classification belongs to a-b+a- tilt system. Bond valence calculations (BVC) have shown ten additional perovskite-related modifications of the equilibrium Ca 1-x Gdx MnO3 structure, and their stability has been investigated as function of Gd doping. We have further studied the influence of gadolinium amount on Mn-О bond angles and distances, tilting of MnO6 octahedra around all three axes and deformation due to the presence of Jahn-Teller distortion around Mn3+ cation, and calculated the amount of Mn 3+ in the system. BVCapproach is a simple, fast and efficient way of calculating the amount of Mn 4+ and Mn 3+ in the doped perovskite compound, which, to the best of our knowledge, has not been done before. The infrared reflection spectra of Ca 1-x Gdx MnO3 samples confirmed XRD results that Ca 1-x Gdx MnO3 nanopowders are of Pnma-1 structure and that the tilting of octahedra are increased with Gddoping. The EPR (electron paramagnetic resonance) spectra are in accordance with the assumption that EPR linewidth is Mn-O-Mn angle dependent. The studied samples showed that small octahedra tilting in these samples brought only a small change of the EPR linewidth.

AB - Persistent microbial contamination of medical implant surfaces is becoming a serious threat to public health. This is principally due to antibiotic-resistant bacterial strains and the formation of bacterial biofilms. The development of novel antibacterial materials that will effectively fight both Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria and prevent biofilm formation represents a big challenge for researchers in the last few decades. In the present work, we report an antibacterial hydrophobic carbon quantum dots/polyurethane nanocomposite (hCQD-PU), with enhanced antibacterial properties induced by pre-treatment with gamma-irradiation. Hydrophobic quantum dots (hCQDs), which are capable of generating reactive oxygen species (ROS) upon irradiation with low-power blue light (470 nm), have been integrated into the polyurethane (PU) polymer matrix to form a photoactive nanocomposite. To modify its physical and chemical properties and improve its antibacterial efficacy, various doses of gamma irradiation (1, 10, and 200 kGy) in the air environment were applied to the formed nanocomposite. Gamma-irradiation pre-treatment significantly influenced the rise in ROS production, therefore, the prooxidative activity under the blue-light illumination of hCQD-PU was also significantly improved. The best antibacterial activity was demonstrated by the hCQD-PU nanocomposite irradiated with a dose of 200 kGy, with the complete eradication of Gram-positive Staphylococcus aureus (S. aureus) and Gram-negative Escherichia coli (E. coli) bacteria after 15 min of exposure to the blue lamp. © 2021 Elsevier Ltd

AB - Background: In order to make some progress in discovering the more effective way to eliminate ROS which cause the oxidative stress in organism in humans and bearing in mind the fact that ethyl-2-hydroxy-4-aryl(alkyl)-4-oxo-2-butenoates (β-diketonates) belong to a class of biologically active compounds, series of β-diketonates were synthesized, characterized, and tested to evaluate there antioxidant activity. Further, to investigate how coordination to copper(II) ion affects the activity of β-diketonates, appropriate complexes were synthesized and characterized. Methods: All complexes were characterized by UV-Vis, IR, and EPR spectroscopy, MS spectrometry, and elemental analysis. Fluorescence spectroscopic method was used for investigations of the interactions between biomacromolecules (DNA or BSA) and compound 2E. Viscosity measurements and molecular docking study were performed to confirm the mode of interactions between DNA and BSA and compound 2E. Results: Scavenging activity on DPPH radical revealed that compounds 2A, 2B, and 2E possess largest free radical scavenging, comparable to standard while results of superoxide anion scavenging activities of tested samples showed that maximum scavenging activity (IC50=168.92 µg/mL) was found for 2E, very similar to standard ascorbic acid, followed by 2B and 2G. Results of the interactions between biomacromolecules and 2E indicated that 2E has the affinity to displace EB from the EB-DNA complex through intercalation [Ksv = (3.7 ± 0.1) × 103 M-1], while Ka value obtained via titration of BSA with 2E [Ka = (4.2 ± 0.2) × 105 M-1], support the fact that the significant amount of the drug could be transported and distributed through the cells. Conclusions: All β-diketonates exhibited better scavenging activities than their corresponding copper complexes. Among all the tested compounds, 2E gave the highest reducing power, even higher than standard ascorbic acid, while reducing power for compounds 2A and 2B was also good but lower than standard. DNA and BSA binding study for 2E showed that this compound has the potential to be used as medicament. © 2021 Bentham Science Publishers.

AB - Nanocomposites made of magnetic spinel oxide Co1+yAl2-yO4 nanoparticles (NPs) with y = 0.93, 1.20 and 1.34 dispersed in an amorphous SiO2 matrix were prepared by a sol-gel method. The average crystallite size DXRD of about 25 nm determined by X-ray diffraction (XRD) agrees well with the average particle size observed in transmission electron microscopy (TEM). Dynamic magnetic susceptibility measurements indicate a spin-glass-like behavior of the nanoparticles below the spin-glass (SG) transition temperature TC < 10 K. Field dependent magnetization exhibits weak ferromagnetism and shift of the magnetic hysteresis loop. On the basis of the observed magnetic properties, we propose a model of the core-shell structure of the Co1+yAl2-yO4 nanoparticles with the spin-glass phase in the core and weak ferromagnetism in the shell. The exchange bias field disappears above the spin-glass transition temperature TC, whereas the weak ferromagnetism persists also at temperatures above TC. The component of weak ferromagnetism is associated with the presence of Co vacancies in the nanoparticle spinel crystal lattice.

AB - Due to their low cost and possible green synthesis, high stability and resistance to photobleaching, graphene quantum dots (GQDs) can be considered as one of the class of carbon nanomaterials which may have great potential as an agent for photosensitized oxygen activation. In such a way, GQDs can be used as a theranostic agent in photodynamic therapy. In this work pristine GQDs, GQDs irradiated with gamma rays and GQDs doped with N and N, S atoms are produced using a simple, green approach. By using different techniques (AFM, HR-TEM, SEM-EDS, FTIR, XRD, PL and UV–Vis) we investigated structural and optical properties of the new types of GQDs. We showed that GQDs functionalized with thiourea (GQDs-TU) completely lost the ability to produce singlet oxygen (1O2) upon photoexcitation while functionalization with urea (GQDs-U) improves the capability of GQDs to produce 1O2 upon the same conditions. Thus, presented GQDs modification with urea seems like a promising approach for the production of the efficient photosensitizer. On the opposite, GQDs-TU are efficient [rad]OH quencher. Due to high singlet oxygen production and low cytotoxicity below 100 μg/mL against HeLa cells, GQDs-U is a good candidate as an agent in photodynamic therapy at this concentration. © 2019

abstract = "Due to their low cost and possible green synthesis, high stability and resistance to photobleaching, graphene quantum dots (GQDs) can be considered as one of the class of carbon nanomaterials which may have great potential as an agent for photosensitized oxygen activation. In such a way, GQDs can be used as a theranostic agent in photodynamic therapy. In this work pristine GQDs, GQDs irradiated with gamma rays and GQDs doped with N and N, S atoms are produced using a simple, green approach. AB - The addition of heteroatoms to pristine carbon quantum dots (CQDs) change their structure and optical properties. In this study, fluorine (F)- and chlorine (Cl)-doped CQDs are prepared by the one-step green hydrothermal route from sodium fluoride, sodium chloride, urea, and citric acid as the starting precursors. Microscopy analysis reveals that the average size of these quantum dots is 5 ± 2 nm, whereas the chemical study shows the existence of C–F and C–Cl bonds. The produced F- and Cl-doped CQDs have fluorescence quantum yields of 0.151 and 0.284, respectively, at an excitation wavelength of 450 nm. Charge transfer resistance of F- and Cl-doped CQDs films is 2 orders of magnitude higher than in the pristine CQD films. Transport band gap of the doped CQDs is 2 eV bigger than that of pristine CQDs. Radical scavenging activity shows very good antioxidant activity of doped CQDs. Antibacterial testing reveals poor antibacterial activity against Staphylococcus aureus and Escherichia coli. The F- and Cl-doped CQDs are successfully used as fluorescent probes for cell imaging as shown by confocal microscopy.

AB - Paper presents detailed studies of local and electronic structure around Fe in Cd0.97Fe0.03Te, Cd0.98Fe0.02Te0.97Se0.03 and Cd0.99Fe0.01Te0.91S0.09 multinary chalcogenides by means of X–ray absorption fine structure (XAFS), X–ray magnetic circular dichroism (XMCD) and electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) measurements. In addition, electronic consequences of Fe incorporation into CdTe semiconductor host were studied by means of first principles calculations. In order to improve accuracy of the calculated total energies, the band gaps and the band edge positions, special attention is paid to the treatment of exchange–correlation interaction and the description of highly localized Fe 3d–states. Also, the Bader theory of the topological properties of the electron charge density is used to access details of the nature, strength and distribution of the (next) nearest neighbour bonds. Local and electronic structure around Fe in Cd0.97Fe0.03Te and Cd0.98Fe0.02Te0.97Se0.03 systems have been found to exhibit similar characteristics, since the first coordination sphere around Fe comprises four Te atoms located at approximately the same distance. In Cd0.99Fe0.01Te0.91S0.09 system, however, local bimodal distribution of distances has been revealed, with one Fe–Te bond replaced with much shorter Fe–S bond, resulting in much stronger crystal–field. Along with the crystal field effect, the spin–orbit interaction has proven to play decisive role in determining the nature of Fe doped CdTe systems. While the systems with higher Fe concentrations (25 at.%) are intrinsic insulators, in systems with only 3.125 at.% Fe one spin channel contributes to the density of states at the Fermi level, which makes them suitable for spin selective electronic transport applications. © 2018 Elsevier B.V.

AB - Hydrothermal synthesis of Mn2+ doped titanate nanotubes (TNTs), which exhibited room temperature ferromagnetism (RTFM), is reported. Dispersions of 1 and 5 at.% Mn2+ doped anatase TiO2 nanocrystals were used as precursors. Size and shape of Mn2+ doped TNTs and precursor nanocrystals were studied by transmission electron microscopy (TEM). The relatively uniform size distribution of transverse dimension of nanotubes of about 10 nm was observed while their lengths varied up to few hundred nanometers. The X-Ray Diffraction (XRD) analysis and Raman spectroscopy of resultant powder confirmed the hydrogen dititanate (H2Ti2O5 x H2O) crystal phase of Mn2+ doped TNTs with the presence of small amount of sodium titanates. Electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) experiments were performed to probe the local atomic and electronic structure of Mn in the nanotubes. Room temperature ferromagnetic ordering with saturation magnetic moment (Ms) in the range of 0.6–1.5 μB per Mn atom was observed. © 2019 Elsevier Masson SAS

AB - Luminescence of monoclinic lithium metatitanate (Li2TiO3) powders activated with different quantities of Mn4+ is studied in detail. Its strong deep-red emission arising from the Mn4+ 2Eg → 4A2g spin forbidden transition is centered at around 688 nm and is suitable for luminescence thermometry. Structural and electron paramagnetic resonance analyses show that Mn4+ ions are equally distributed in two almost identical Ti4+ sites in which they are octahedrally coordinated by six oxygen ions. Calculations based on the exchange charge model of the crystal field provided values of Racah parameters (B=760 cm−1, C= 2993 cm−1), crystal-field splitting Dq= 2043 cm−1, and the nephelauxetic parameter β1=0.9775. The maximal quantum efficiency of 24.1% at room temperature is found for 0.126% Mn4+ concentration. Temperature quenching of emission occurs by a cross-over via 4T2 excited state of the Mn4+ ions with T1/2=262 K and is quite favorable for the application in the lifetime-based luminescence thermometry since relative changes in emission decay values are exceptionally-large (around 3.21% at room temperature). We derived theoretical expressions for the temperature dependence of the absolute and relative sensitivities and discuss the influence of host material properties on lifetime sensitivities. © 2019 Wiley-VCH Verlag GmbH & Co. AB - Inimitable properties of carbon quantum dots as well as a cheap production contribute to their possible application in biomedicine especially as antibacterial and antibiofouling coatings. Fluorescent hydrophobic carbon quantum dots are synthesized by bottom-up condensation method and used for deposition of uniform and homogeneous Langmuir-Blodgett thin films on different substrates. It is found that this kind of quantum dots generates singlet oxygen under blue light irradiation. Antibacterial and antibiofouling testing on four different bacteria strains (Escherichia coli, Staphylococcus aureus, Bacillus cereus, and Pseudomonas aeruginosa) reveals enhanced antibacterial and antibiofouling activity of hydrophobic carbon dots thin films under blue light irradiation. Moreover, hydrophobic quantum dots show noncytotoxic effect on mouse fibroblast cell line. These properties enable potential usage of hydrophobic carbon quantum dots thin films as excellent antibacterial and antibiofouling coatings for different biomedical applications.

AB - Pseudomonas aeruginosa has been amongst the top 10 'superbugs' worldwide and is causing infections with poor outcomes in both humans and animals. From 202 P. aeruginosa isolates (n = 121 animal and n = 81 human), 40 were selected on the basis of biofilm-forming ability and were comparatively characterized in terms of virulence determinants to the type strain P. aeruginosa PAO1. Biofilm formation, pyocyanin and hemolysin production, and bacterial motility patterns were compared with the ability to kill human cell line A549 in vitro. On average, there was no significant difference between levels of animal and human cytotoxicity, while human isolates produced higher amounts of pyocyanin, hemolysins and showed increased swimming ability. Non-parametric statistical analysis identified the highest positive correlation between hemolysis and the swarming ability. For the first time an ensemble machine learning approach used on the in vitro virulence data determined the highest relative predictive importance of the submerged biofilm formation for the cytotoxicity, as an indicator of the infection ability. The findings from the in vitro study were validated in vivo using zebrafish (Danio rerio) embryos. This study highlighted no major differences between P. aeruginosa species isolated from animal and human infections and the importance of pyocyanin production in cytotoxicity and infection ability. © FEMS 2018.

AB - Due to controversial reports concerning antibacterial activity of different graphene based materials it is very important to investigate their antibacterial action on a wide range of Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria. In this paper we have investigated the structure induced phototoxic antibacterial activity of four types of graphene based materials: graphene oxide (GO), graphene quantum dots (GQDs), carbon quantum dots (CQDs) and nitrogen doped carbon quantum dots (N-CQDs). Antibacterial activity was tested on 19 types of bacteria. It is found that nanometer-size CQDs and N-CQDs are the most potent agents whereas micrometer-size GO has very poor antibacterial activity. Electron paramagnetic resonance measurements confirmed photodynamic production of singlet oxygen for all types of used quantum dots. Detailed analysis has shown that N-CQDs are an excellent photodynamic antibacterial agent for treatment of bacterial infections induced by Enterobacter aerogenes (E. aerogenes), Proteus mirabilis (P. mirabilis), Staphylococcus saprophyticus (S. saprophyticus), Listeria monocytogenes (L. monocytogenes), Salmonella typhimurium (S. typhimurium) and Klebsiella pneumoniae.

AB - Ultrasmall iron oxide (USPIO) nanoparticles, with diameter mostly less than 3 nm dispersed in an organic carrier fluid were synthesized by polyol route. The evolution of ZFC-FC magnetization curves with temperature, as well as the shift of the ac susceptibility peaks upon changing the frequency, reveal that the nanoparticles in the fluid are non-interacting and superparamagnetic with the blocking temperature T-B similar to 10 K. The Mossbauer spectra analysis proposed the core/shell structure of the nanoparticles consisting of stoichiometric gamma-Fe2O3 core and non-stoichiometric shell. The nanoparticle surface layer has a great influence on their properties which is principally manifested in significant reduction of the magnetization and in a large increase in magnetic anisotropy. Magnetic moments do not saturate in fields up to 5 T, even at the lowest measured temperature, T = 5 K. The average magnetic particle diameter is changed from 1.3 to 1.8 nm with increasing magnetic field from 0 to 5 T which is noticeably smaller than the particle sizes measured by TEM. The estimated effective magnetic anisotropy constant value, K-eff = 2 x 10(5) J/m(3), is two orders of magnitude higher than in the bulk maghemite. Measurements of the longitudinal and transverse NMR relaxivity parameters on water diluted nanoparticle dispersions at 1.5 T gave the values r(1) = 0.028 mmol(-1) s(-1), r(2) = 0.050 mmol(-1) s(-1) and their ratio r(2)/r(1) = 1.8. Continuous increase of the T-1-weighted MRI signal intensity with increasing Fe concentration in the nanoparticle dispersions was observed which makes this ferrofluid to behave as a positive T-1 contrast agent.
