AB - A multifaceted framework for understanding self-organization in fusion plasma dynamics is presented which concurrently manages several important issues related to the nonlinear and multiscale phenomena involved, namely,(1) it chooses the optimal template wavelet for the analysis of temporal or spatio-temporal plasma dynamics, (2) it detects parameter values at which bifurcations occur, (3) it quantifies complexity and self-organization, (4) it enables short-term prediction of nonlinear dynamics, and (5) it extracts coherent structures in turbulence by separating them from the incoherent component. The first two aspects including the detection of changes in the dynamics of a nonlinear system are illustrated by analyzing Stimulated Raman Scattering in a bounded, weakly dissipative plasma. Self-organization in the fusion plasma is quantitatively analyzed based on the numerical simulations of the Gyrokinetic-Vlasov (GKV) model of plasma dynamics. The parameters for the standard and inward shifted magnetic configurations, relevant for the Large Helical Device, were used in order to quantitatively compare self-organization and complexity in the two configurations. Finally, self-organization is analyzed for three different confinement regimes of the MAST device. Published by AIP Publishing.

AB - We report measurements of parametric instabilities and hot electron generation in a laser intensity regime up to 6 x 10(15) W/cm(2), typical of the shock ignition approach to inertial fusion. Experiments performed at the PALS laboratory in Prague show that the incident laser energy losses are dominated by Stimulated Brillouin Scattering (SBS) rather than by Stimulated Raman Scattering (SRS) or Two-Plasmon Decay (TPD). Results are compared to hydrodynamics simulations using a code that includes self-consistent calculations of non-linear laser plasma interactions and accounts for the laser intensity statistics contained in the beam speckles. Good agreement is found for the backscattered SRS light, and for temperature and flux of hot electrons. The effect of high-intensity speckles on backscattered SRS is also underlined numerically and experimentally. Copyright (C) EPLA, 2017

AB - A stimulated Raman scattering (SRS) is a great concern for laser fusion, causing an energy and symmetry loss and target preheating. In particular, for dominating backward SRS (BRS), a complexity of nonlinear saturation was revealed. Recently, to develop lasers at multi-exawatts and beyond, relevant to high-energy physics, a proposed Raman amplification based on BRS met a restrictive operation window. Here, we stress BRS generics that due to a nonlinear frequency shift (relativistic/trapping effect), it nonlinearly saturates with intermittent pulsations. A break up of Manley-Rowe invariants explains a non-steady saturation. Further, a coherent pulsation BRS regime is proposed for femto-sec pulse generation in a thin exploding foil plasma, with parameter scalings investigated by analytics and particle simulations.

AB - Optical pulse compression by the linear reflection of a laser pulse from a relativistically moving plasma is studied. Using Lorentz transformations, covariance of Maxwells equations and the principle of phase invariance to transform between the rest frame and the moving frame, analytics can be exactly performed in the moving frame. Closed-form formulae for reflected waveforms as a function of incident angle show temporal compression and intensity amplification by a factor of 2 gamma and 4 gamma(2), respectively, where gamma is the Lorentz factor of the relativistic electron plasma. As an independent test, fully relativistic electromagnetic particle simulations agree well with analytical results, predicting pulse compression and large amplification to be of relevance to the generation of attosecond optical pulses.

AB - Intermittency in the scrape-off layer (SOL) region of magnetically confine plasma and velocity intermittency of neutral flui are compared from the aspect of global and local multifractal properties. Density fluctuation in the MAST device are considered and contrasted to local velocity measurements of an air fl w into round free jet. Large deviation (multifractal) spectra are used to characterize global features revealing different energy cascade mechanisms in each of systems. A transformation invariant zero-crossing function is shown to be more reliable indicator of stable equilibrium states then the probability density function. In particular the zero-crossing function detects L-H transitions and recognizes ELMs as catastropohic events in the sense of stochastic catastrophy theory. The method may be of significan importance in the analysis and control of edge plasma turbulence.

AB - We study the stability of the continuous waves in the pancake shaped dipolar Bose-Einstein condensate trapped in the strong optical lattice potential with the coexisting local (the short-range s-wave) interaction and nonlocal (the dipole-dipole) interactions between the condensate atoms. The system is modeled by two two-dimensional discrete models derived from the Gross-Pitaevskii equation accounting the dipole-dipole interactions: discrete nonlinear Schrodinger equation with cubic nonlinearity and nonpolynomial Schrodinger equation. The corresponding dispersion relations are calculated analytically and the regions of the modulation instability in the parametric space are summarized into the stability diagrams.

The retained zero-crossing set enables insight into various aspects of edge plasma turbulence. Certain common features with neutral fluid turbulence are recognized in the low confinement regime (L-mode). Spectral characteristics of the zero-crossing set are compared between L-mode, dithering H-mode and H-mode plasma edge turbulence and a scaling exponent characterizing the tendency of small scales to cluster is introduced. A transformation invariant level-crossing function is shown to be a more reliable indicator of stable equilibrium states than the probability density function. AB - Effects of multihelicity confinement magnetic fields on turbulent transport and zonal flows are investigated by means of spatiotemporal analysis of gyrokinetic Vlasov simulation results for the ion temperature gradient turbulence, where the standard and the inward-shifted configurations of the Large Helical Device are considered. The analysis of simulation results demonstrates that fluctuations of electrostatic potential for zonal flows exhibit spatiotemporal chaos in both configurations. However, the intensity of chaos found is considerably decreased in the inward-shifted configuration consistent with improved confinement. Enhanced zonal flow generation in the inward shifted case is accompanied by transport reduction which may be a direct consequence of chaos suppression. (C) 2009 American Institute of Physics. AB - Hollow cone-shaped overdense plasma targets were used to investigate the generation and transport of fast particles in a high-intensity laser-matter interaction. Using 2d PIC simulations we examine cone, cone-wire and cone with an open tip target designs. Localization of electron jets and an angular spread are found in all cases of the laser-cone interaction. However, in the cone-wire geometry, at later times, the charge separation and radial electric fields around the wire collimate electron streams with an electron hot spot at the front end of the wire. The main mechanism of the electron transport in the targets is the reflection of electrons from the potential walls of the cone surface, and no significant surface electron transport is observed. Furthermore, the presence of harmonics in the reflected light suggests that the field intensity in the cone can be enhanced not only by simple multiple reflection but also by the field modulation due to harmonics generation. Moreover, it is found that the laser interaction with the open-tip cone can efficiently generate trains of short ( LT lambda) attosecond electron sheets close to the laser axis.

AB - The intermittency in the edge turbulence of the magnetic confinement devices, caused by large-scale events with high radial velocity, has been the object of several recent studies. It is well known that bursty behavior in the scrape-off layer of magnetically confined plasmas, and the departure from random diffusion models is caused by intermittent large-scale plasma structures radially convected at high speed. Recently performed statistical analysis of plasma density fluctuations have demonstrated universal features of intermittent phenomena in plasma turbulence in the sense that they originate and have the same properties in many devices with distinct configurations. We extend the universal features of turbulence to Laplace distributions of derivatives of plasma density flucutations and show the properties of distributions for various confinement regimes. We further demonstrate that universal features are not complete by performing multifractal analysis which reveals unique features for each device and for each confinement regime. AB - A multifractal analysis based on evaluation and interpretation of large deviation spectra is applied to plasma edge turbulence data from different devices (MAST and Tore Supra). It is demonstrated that in spite of some universal features there are unique characteristics for each device as well as for different confinement regimes. In the second part of the exposition the issue of estimating the variable power law behavior of spectral densities is addressed. The analysis of this issue is performed using fractional Brownian motion (fBm) as the underlying stochastic model whose parameters are estimated locally in time by wavelet scale spectra. In this manner information about the inertial range as well as variability of the fBm parameters is obtained giving more information important for understanding edge turbulence and intermittency.

AB - Dynamical features of one-dimensional electromagnetic solitons formed in a relativistic interaction of a linearly polarized laser light with underdense cold plasma are investigated. The relativistic Lorentz force in an intense laser light pushes electrons into longitudinal motion, generating coupled longitudinal-transverse waves. In a weakly relativistic approximation these modes are well described by the generalized nonlinear Schrodinger type of equation, with two extra nonlocal terms. Here, an original analytical solution for a moving electromagnetic soliton is derived in an implicit form. For an isolated soliton, our analysis shows that the motion downshifts the soliton eigenfrequency and decreases its amplitude. The effect of the soliton velocity on the stability is analytically predicted and checked numerically. Results show shifting of the stability region toward larger amplitudes in comparison to the standing soliton case. Rich dynamics with examples of (un)stable soliton propagation and breather creation and formation of unstable cusp-type structures is exposed numerically. (c) 2006 American Institute of Physics.

AB - To investigate the growth of instabilities in an underdense plasma, a number of simulations was carried out using the one-dimensional electromagnetic (EM) relativistic particle-in-cell code. A new type of Raman-like scattering was identified in a subcritical regime, which is over-dense for standard SRS. This novel instability is a parametric decay of the relativistic EM wave into a scattered light and an electron-acoustic (omega LT omega(p)) electrostatic wave. In the linear stage, resonant matchings are well satisfied, while the scattered Stokes wave is always driven near critical. During nonlinear saturation, due to rapid growth and strong localization of the Stokes wave, narrow intense EM soliton-like structures with down-shifted laser light trapped inside are formed; eventually, to be irradiated through the plasma-vacuum interface in the form of intense low-frequency EM bursts. This behavior alters the distribution of laser energy between transmission, scattering losses and generation of energetic electrons.

AB - The mechanism of electron acceleration by intense laser pulse interacting with an underdense plasma layer is examined by one-dimensional particle-m-cell (1D-PIC) simulations. The standard dephasing limit and the electron acceleration process are discussed briefly. A new phenomenon, of short high-quality, well-collimated return relativistic electron beam with thermal energy spread, is observed in the direction opposite to laser propagation. The process of the electron beam formation, its characteristics, and the time-history in x and p, space for test electrons in the beam, are analyzed and exposed clearly. Finally, an estimate for the maximum electron energy appears in a good agreement with simulation results.

AB - Propagation of a laser light through regions of an underdense plasma is an active research topic in laser fusion. In particular, a large effort has been invested in studies of stimulated Raman scattering (SRS) and stimulated Brillouin scattering (SBS), which can reflect laser energy and produce energetic particles to preheat a fusion energy target. Experiments, theory, and simulations agree on a complex interplay between various laser-plasma instabilities. By particle-in-cell simulations of an underdense electron plasma, apart from the standard SRS, a strong backscattering was found near the electron plasma frequency at densities beyond the quarter critical. This novel instability, recognized in recent experiments as stimulated laser scattering on a trapped electron-acoustic mode (SEAS), is absent from a classical theory of laser-parametric instabilities. A parametric excitation of SEAS instability is explained by a three-wave resonant decay of the incident laser light into a standing backscattered wave and a slow trapped electron-acoustic wave (omega LT omega(p)). Large SEAS pulsations, eventually suppressed by relativistic heating of electrons, are observed in these simulations. This phenomenon seems relevant to future hohlraum target and fast ignition experiments.

AB - The problem of modulation instability of continuous wave and array soliton solutions within the framework of a two-dimensional continuum-discrete nonlinear Schrodinger lattice model, which accounts for dispersion and long-range interactions between elements, is investigated. The linear stability analysis based on an energy principle and a variational approach, which were originally developed for the continuum nonlinear Schrodinger model, is proposed. Regions of instability are identified and analytical expressions for the corresponding thresholds and the growth rate spectra are calculated.

AB - Localized electromagnetic structures with trapped laser light inside are often found in simulations of relativistic laser-plasmas. First, we examine existence and stability of one-dimensional electromagnetic solitons formed in a relativistic laser interaction with an underdense cold plasma. In a weakly relativistic model, the original equation of the nonlinear Schrodinger type, with local and non-local cubic nonlinearities is derived. Standing electromagnetic solitons are analytically shown to be stable in agreement with the model simulation. Next, we discuss a novel example of a stimulated backscattering of a laser light from the slow trapped electron-acoustic wave, involving a standing (localized) Stokes light sideband. Conditions are examined when above underdense instability dominates over standard stimulated Raman backscattering.

AB - Intense laser-plasma interaction can be a source of various electronic instabilities. Recently, stimulated backscattering from a trapped electron-acoustic wave (SEAS) [Montgomery , Phys. Rev. Lett. 87, 155001 (2001)] was proposed to reinterpret spectra previously attributed to stimulated Raman scattering (SRS) from unrealistically low densities. By particle simulations in a uniform plasma layer, which is overdense for ordinary SRS, strong reflection by SEAS at the electron plasma frequency is found. Transient SEAS reflectivity pulsations are followed by strong relativistic heating of electrons. Physical conditions are explained by three-wave parametric coupling between laser light, standing backscattered wave and slow electron-acoustic wave. Regions in which SEAS reflection can dominate over SRS are singled out.

AB - We discuss existence and stability of electromagnetic solitons in a relativistic interaction of a linearly polarized laser light with uniform underdense cold plasma. In a weakly relativistic NLS model with local and non-local cubic nonlinearities, an one-dimensional standing electromagnetic soliton trapped in a localized density well, is analytically shown to be stable. By fully relativistic fluid-Maxwell simulations existence of a family of large amplitude relativistic solitons is revealed. Simple analytical estimates give the relation between the maximum amplitude of the soliton vector potential and its eigen-frequency, in agreement with simulation data.

The linear growth rate dependence on the discrete wave number and soliton amplitude is calculated from the linearized eigenvalue problem using the variational method. In addition, the eigenvalue problem is solved numerically by shooting method and a good agreement with the analytical results is found. It is proved numerically that the results fur the instability threshold fur the circular array coincides with the quasicollapse threshold for the case of open arrays With initial pulses in a form of array solitons.

AB - A nonlinear three-wave interaction in an open dissipative plasma model of a stimulated Raman backscattering is studied. An anomalous kinetic dissipation due to electron trapping and plasma wave breaking is accounted for in a hybrid kinetic-fluid scheme. We simulate a finite plasma with open boundaries and vary a transport parameter to examine a route to spatio-temporal complexity. An interplay between self-organization at micro (kinetic) and macro (fluid) scales is found through quasi-periodic and intermittent evolution of dynamical variables, dissipative structures and related entropy rates. A consistency with a general scenario of self-organization is claimed. [S1063-651X(99)17011-9].

AB - Temporal pulsations, bursting and incoherence of stimulated Raman backscatter in a bounded, underdense plasma were observed in relativistic particle-in-cell simulations. We show that backscatter complexities, modulated and broadened spectra, follow a quasi-periodic and intermittent route to turbulence. We attribute a blue shift to relativistic decrease of plasma frequency. The bursting follows wave breaking, related to hot tail acceleration and bulk heating that further suppress Raman instability. Consistency with short-pulse experiments and simulations at high intensities is outlined.

abstract = "Temporal pulsations, bursting and incoherence of stimulated Raman backscatter in a bounded, underdense plasma were observed in relativistic particle-in-cell simulations. Consistency with short-pulse experiments and simulations at high intensities is outlined.",
