AB - According to standard delocalized kinetic models of thermoluminescence (TL), when an irradiated sample is held at a high temperature T, the isothermal TL signal will decay with a characteristic thermal decay constant A which depends strongly on the temperature T. This prediction of standard delocalized kinetic theory is investigated in this paper by studying two TL dosimeters, MgB4O7:Dy, Na and LiB4O7:Cu, In (hereafter MBO and LBO correspondingly). In the case of LBO it was found that the thermal decay constant A of the main dosimetric TL peak follows exactly the predictions of standard delocalized kinetic theory. Furthermore, the thermal activation energy of the main peak evaluated by the isothermal decay method is in full agreement with values obtained from initial rise and glow curve fitting methods. However, in the case of MBO it was found that the thermal decay constant A varies little with the isothermal decay temperature T. In order to explain these unusual results for MBO, the TL glow curves and isothermal decay curves were analyzed using analytical expressions derived recently from a radiative tunneling recombination model. Based on the different behavior of the two TL dosimeters, it is suggested that the isothermal decay of TL at high temperatures can be used to discriminate between radiative delocalized recombination and radiative localized recombination processes. AB - In this work we have investigated the radioluminescence (RL) characteristics of three materials (Mg2SiO4:Tb, CsY2F7:Tb and KMgF3:Sm) in order to determine whether they can be used as real time dosimeters in the the framework the fiberoptic dosimetry (FOD) technique. This technique is based on the use of scintillating materials coupled to the end of an optical fiber, which collects the light emitted by the scintillator during irradiation. Since usually the intensity of the emitted light is proportional to the dose-rate, the technique provides a reliable measuring method, which can be employed in radiotherapy treatments.

AB - Borate based thermoluminescence dosimeters (TLD) show high sensitivity and good TL characteristics. One of the promising material amongst the dosimeters is Dy doped CaB4O7. Spectrally resolved thermoluminescence of Dy doped CaB4O7 shows three glow peaks at about 50 degrees C, 240 degrees C and 380 degrees C, the intensity of the 240 degrees C glow peak being the maximum. All TL experiments were conducted on a high sensitivity TL spectrometer at Sussex University with a heating rate of 50 degrees C min(-1). Two main emissions associated with the Dy dopant are observed at similar to 480 and 580 nm. The samples were subjected to a series of treatments including excitation by X-rays and UV laser radiation. As part of the present research CaB4O7:Dy materials were subjected to two different heat treatments; quenching and slow cooling in order to investigate the changes in TL characteristics. AB - Natural radiation especially at high altitudes is always a mixed low (electrons, photons, protons) and high (heavy ions, charged particles, neutrons) linear energy transfer (LET) field. Recently the application of thermoluminescent dosimeters has been extended to such mixed radiation field which was performed with a pair of dosimeters, having various sensitivity to low and to high LET radiations. The aim of our work was the comparative investigation of Al(2)O(3):C and CaSO(4):Tm as two highly sensitive thermoluminescent materials. The rate of relative TL efficiency for high LET irradiation to low LET exposure was about ten times higher for CaSO(4):Tm than for Al(2)O(3):C. During two kinds of environmental investigations (on-site measurements and stratospheric experiment) both CaSO(4):Tm and Al(2)O(3):C were proved to be appropriate tools for measuring environmental doses at different altitudes. In particular, the stability of the RL signal after repeated use, the spectrum of the RL emission and the dose-rate response curve of a Mg2SiO4:Tb-based fiberoptic probe have been determined. The probe has been also used to obtain a percentage dose depth curve in a water phantom and its performance has been compared to that of a standard ion chamber. Besides, its absolute RL yield has been compared to that of an RL probe based on the commercial Al2O3:C phosphor. (C) 2009 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

AB - Rare earths, especially Dy or Tm doped CaSO4 phosphors are actively studied. They have high sensitivity, a large dynamic range, thermal stability and ease of preparation. Nevertheless, they can be enhanced by inclusion of lithium and this study reports some effects of lithium co-dopant on the TL and radioluminescence (RL) emissions of two TL phosphors. Addition of Li as a co-dopant ion was made either during chemical preparation of the phosphors, or as a binder component mixed with the basic phosphors matrix during the process of pressing and sintering the TLD pellets.

AB - In this paper the influence of different heating rates on thermoluminescence (TL) kinetics, glow-peak temperatures, heights and integrated TL intensities of the main glow peak of recently produced Mg2SiO4 : Tb dosimeters are reported. The TL properties of the phosphor were investigated after beta-irradiation at room temperature. Glow curve shape, peak shape, repeated initial rise and variable heating rate methods were used to analyse the TL kinetics of the main glow peak at 473 K. Results show that the TL glow peak of Mg2SiO4 : Tb phosphor obeys second-order kinetics. Analysis of the main dosimetric peak by using the methods mentioned above revealed that activation energy (E) is about 1 eV and the pre-exponential factor (s) is in the range 10(10)-10(11) s(-1). In addition it is ascertained that the glow-peak temperature increases with heating rate. The glow-peak height showed two maxima in the heating rate range investigated. The behaviour of the integrated TL intensities and the maximum glow-peak temperatures related to the heating rate have been discussed in terms of thermal quenching and clustering formation.

AB - We appreciate the opportunity to respond to comments regarding the paper published by Ege et al (2007 Effect of heating rate on kinetic parameters of beta-irradiated Li2B4O7: Cu, Ag, P in TSL measurements Meas. Sci. Technol. 18 889). We would like to thank the authors for taking the time to tell us about their opinion, but unfortunately we do not agree with them completely. In the article presented by Kumar and Chourasiya some comment is advanced to the analysis of the glow curves measured with different heating rates, presented in our recent study. According to our study, the area under the glow curve decreases with increasing heating rate in TL-temperature plots due to the quenching effects. Contrary to this, Kumar and Chourasiya suggest that this decrease is due to the normalization process. Here we hope to clarify any confusion regarding our published study.

AB - The effect of heating rate on the thermally stimulated luminescence (TSL) emission due to the temperature lag (TLA) between the TSL material and the heating element has been investigated using Li2B4O7:Cu,Ag,P dosimetric materials. The TLA becomes significant when the material is heated at high heating rates. TSL glow curves of Li2B4O7:Cu,Ag,P material showed two main peaks after beta-irradiation. The kinetic parameters, namely activation energy (E) and frequency factor (s) associated with the high temperature main peak of Li2B4O7:Cu,Ag,P were determined using the method of various heating rates (VHR), in which heating rates from 1 to 40 K s(-1) were used. It is assumed that non-ideal heat transfer between the heater and the material may cause significant inconsistency of kinetic parameter values obtained with different methods. The effect of TLA on kinetic parameters of the dosimeter was examined.

AB - Recently, two new types of tissue equivalent thermoluminescent detectors (TLDs) have aroused attention: LiF:Mg,Cu,Na,Si and Li2B4O7:Cu,Ag,P. In this work the characteristics of both detectors were compared with the characteristics of the well-known type LiF:Mg,Ti detector, TLD-100. The following properties were investigated: the glow curve structures, relative sensitivity, batch homogeneity and uniformity, detection threshold, reproducibility of the response, linearity in the wide dose range and fading. Also, the energy dependence for medium and low energy X rays was determined in the range of mean energies between 33 and 116 keV. The results confirmed tissue equivalency of both new types in the investigated range of photon energies. LiF:Mg,Cu,Na,Si detector has very high sensitivity (similar to 75 times higher than that of TLD-100) and is convenient for use in a very low range of doses. Li2B4O7:Cu,Ag,P detector shows some improvements in comparison with the previously prepared types of lithium borate. The most important is the five times higher sensitivity than that of TLD-100. This detector is also very promising, especially in medical dosimetry.

AB - In this paper main optically stimulated luminescence (OSL) and thermoluminescence (TL) characteristics are presented of a newly synthesised material MgO doped with terbium (Tb) developed at the Institute of Nuclear Science, Vinca. A thermally stimulated emission spectrum showed the characteristic lines of Tb3+ in a wide range of wavelengths. The TL sensitivity of the main TL glow peak at 315 degrees C is 1.7 times higher than the TL of Al2O3:C. The highest OSL sensitivity was obtained under green lamp (500-570 nm) stimulation. The fast component in the OSL decay curve is 2.4 times faster than Al2O3:C. The OSL signal is linear with dose up to 10 Gy. The lower limit of detection was found to be 100 mu Gy. These first results show that the newly synthesised material has some promising properties for the application in radiation dosimetry.
