AB - This paper analyzes the influence of the anomalous diffusive effects caused by micro-scale heterogeneity and kinetic and inertial thermal relaxations on the optically induced thermoelastic bending component of the photoacoustic response. We calculated the temperature distribution for a one-dimensional heat transfer problem with planar and periodic excitation, neglecting the influence of thermoelastic strains on the temperature profile. Thermoelastic bending was evaluated using a theoretical approximation of a thin plate, while pressure fluctuations in the photoacoustic cell were obtained by assuming adiabatic changes in the closed air. The model analysis shows that the relaxation processes could significantly affect the mechanical piston component of the photoacoustic response at frequencies higher than the minima of the inverse of two thermal relaxation times, while the influence of micro-scale heterogeneity is observable in the whole frequency range.

AB - In order to make the photothermal effect detectable from a sample with low optical absorption, an optically opaque layer must be applied on its surface. A model of optically induced temperature variations for such a structure is derived, with a very thin coating applied on the non-illuminated (back) side of the sample and neglecting heat flux dissipation in the coating. Validation of the model is performed by comparing the obtained results with the results for the corresponding two-layer structure model. The influence of optical absorption on surface temperature variations of both optically transparent and semi-transparent film, whether the film is a good or poor thermal conductor, is analyzed. It is shown that the effects of optical absorption in the coated structure can be observed through variations in the measured temperature, despite the low absorbance of the sample.

AB - We examine the significance of the predictive potential of EPI cystatin C (EPI CysC) in combination with NTproBNP, sodium, and potassium in the evaluation of renal function in patients with cardiorenal syndrome using standard mathematical classification models from the domain of artificial intelligence. The criterion for the inclusion of subjects with combined impairment of heart and kidney function in the study was the presence of newly discovered or previously diagnosed clinically manifest cardiovascular disease and acute or chronic kidney disease in different stages of evolution. In this paper, five standard classifiers from the field of machine learning were used for the analysis of the obtained data: ensemble of neural networks (MLP), ensemble of k-nearest neighbors (k-NN) and naive Bayes classifier, decision tree, and a classifier based on logistic regression. The results showed that in MLP, k-NN, and naive Bayes, EPI CysC had the highest predictive potential. Thus, our approach with utility classifiers recognizes the essence of the disorder in patients with cardiorenal syndrome and facilitates the planning of further treatment.

AB - In this paper, the possibility of determining the thermal, elastic and geometric characteristics of a thin TiO2 film deposited on a silicon substrate, with a thickness of 30 μm, in the frequency range of 20 to 20 kHz with neural networks were analysed. For this purpose, the geometric (thickness), thermal (thermal diffusivity, coefficient of linear expansion) and electronic parameters of substrates were known and constant in the two-layer model, while the following nano-layer thin-film parameters were changed: thickness, expansion and thermal diffusivity. Predictions of these three parameters of the thin-film were analysed separately with three neural networks. All of them together were joined by a fourth neural network. It was shown that the neural network, which analysed all three parameters at the same time, achieved the highest accuracy, so the use of networks that provide predictions for only one parameter is less reliable. The obtained results showed that the application of neural networks in determining the thermoelastic properties of a thin film on a supporting substrate enables the estimation of its characteristics with great accuracy.

AB - Irrational and transcendental functions can often be seen in signal processing or physical phenomena analysis as consequences of fractional-order and distributed-order models that result in fractional or partial differential equations. In cases when finding solution in analytical form tends to be difficult or impossible, numerical calculations such as Haar wavelet operational matrix method can be used. In order to evaluate accuracy of the numerical inversion of irrational and transcendental Laplace transform using Haar wavelet operational matrix, a number inverse Laplace transforms are numerically solved and compared with the analytical solutions and solutions provided by Invlap and NILT algorithms.

AB - In modern high-speed semiconductor electronics, there is a high-rate heating of components that is affected by very fast relaxation processes. The relaxation times of these processes should be known for thermal management of these devices. For almost half a century, photoacoustic techniques have been successfully developed and used to investigate physical semiconductor properties. In order to enable observation of fast relaxation processes, the model of pulse photoacoustic signal is proposed that includes influence of thermal relaxations. It is shown that these processes can be observed in a thin semiconductor layer by choosing the frequency of short pulse train and their duty cycle.

AB - Molecular transport through a composite multilayer membrane is a central process in transdermal drug delivery (TDD). Classical Fickean approach treats skin as a pseudo-homogenous membrane, while in reality skin is highly heterogeneous system as shown in basic physiological research. Particle transport across such systems shows anomalous diffusive behavior that is described by fractional models. These models don't consider experimentally observed dependence of particle transport nature on time scale. The possible way of inclusion of that observation in model of transdermal transport is presented in this paper. The generalized fractional models of the spectral functions of the concentration profile and the cumulative amount of the drug absorbed through the bloodstream are derived. The derived model predicts resonances in concentration profile and larger cumulative amount of the drug in both the short-time limit and the long-time limit, which can have significant physiological implications. © 2023 The Authors

The plasma-elastic component model assumes that ambipolar diffusion can be approximated by the minority carrier diffusion. AB - The model of a photoacoustic gas-microphone signal in the time domain recorded in a transmission configuration using a minimum volume cell is derived. This model takes into account the inertial thermal relaxations of both the sample and the gas filling the cell by means of the generalized hyperbolic theory of heat conduction. With the introduction of electro-thermal analogy for the thin sample and short microphone length cavity, characteristic quantities are defined, which can be used in solving the inverse problem in time-domain photoacoustic in both cases, when thermal relaxations are neglected as well as when they are considered. The derived model that includes thermal relaxation explains the experimentally observed occurrence of overshoots and undershoots as well as an oscillatory approach to the steady values of the recorded signal in high-resolution time-domain photoacoustic measurements of thin semiconductor membranes, which will be presented in detail in Paper II of the paper. © 2023 Author(s).

AB - Based on the analogy between resistor-capacitor (RC) filters and the thermoelastic component of a photoacoustic signal, the complex thermoelastic response of an open photoacoustic cell is described as a simple linear time-invariant system of a low-pass RC filter. This description is done by finding a linear relation between the thermoelastic cut-off frequency and sample material thickness within the range of 10-1000 μm. Based on the theory of a composite piston, we run numerical simulations of the proposed method for n-type silicon, described as either a surface or volume absorber. Theoretical predictions are experimentally validated by using an open photoacoustic cell setup to record the signal of an 850-μm-thick n-type silicon wafer illuminated by a blue light source modulated with frequencies from 20 Hz to 20 kHz. The obtained experimental results confirm the linear dependence of the thermoelastic cut-off frequency on the sample thickness, and, therefore, they lay the foundation of a new method for the thermal characterization of materials. © 2023 Author(s).

AB - Acute kidney injury is a syndrome that occurs in different clinical situations, under the influence of different risk factors, in patients of all ages, especially those in the intensive care unit. The problem of acute kidney damage refers to numerous clinical situations, different disease mechanisms and poor outcomes. In addition, with the current definition of acute kidney injury, only one conventional marker is available for diagnosis in daily clinical practice. To recognize the disease promptly and start treatment, and thereby improving the outcome, the paper presents a model for recognizing acute kidney damage in the stage that requires hemodialysis treatment. The study included 86 hospitalized patients with acute renal impairment who were divided according to the stage of renal impairment at admission to hospital treatment into three groups. The assessment of acute renal impairment and the classification of disease stages were based on the diagnostic stages by the K / DIGO group. All examined patients were over 18 years of age. In the first stage of the disease it was 12.79%, in the second stage it was 15.12%, and in the third 72.09% of patients. Test methods included clinical processing, laboratory evaluation, functional tests, and echosonographic examination. Clinical data included demographic, comorbidity and vital parameters, baseline full blood count, biochemistry and renal function tests. Further laboratory investigations were performed as indicated clinically thereafter. Spot blood and urine samples were collected from all patients in the morning after overnight fasting. The neural network was created in feed forward back propagation of the connection between the data of 69 patients with 31 parameters. In pattern recognition, the neural network learns to recognize the conditions in which it was decided to send the patient to dialysis 10 or to send to classical treatment 01. The training function analyzed the patients separated in three special categories 80% training, 10% test and 10% validation. The algorithm of the learning function is a scaling gradient that adapts the input data to the output data. The neural network achieved a performance of 0.14322 in 6 epochs. In a test with the data of 17 patients, it was shown that the neural network indicates for which patients dialysis treatment is a better option that fits with AKI stage 3. For patients with the first and second stages of the disease, conservative treatment is a better therapeutic choice. This paper deals with a current topic by analyzing data using a neural network algorithm to help assess the stage of the disease in high-risk hospitalized patients with acute kidney injury and select treatment modalities. The conclusions derived from this analysis should help with stage recognition and the selection of treatment modalities for patients with acute kidney injury.

abstract = "Acute kidney injury is a syndrome that occurs in different clinical situations, under the influence of different risk factors, in patients of all ages, especially those in the intensive care unit. AB - Nano mechanical structures (NEMS) are being developed for application in pressure and temperature sensors. They consist of a very thin oxide layer on a silicon wafer. This layer is placed to improve their sensitivity to pressure changes. In this paper, it was investigated how much this layer affects the physical properties of such structures. In the research, the photoacoustic gas microphone experimental measurement method was applied and neural networks were developed for solving the inverse photoacoustic problem. The obtained results show that controlling the thickness of the oxide layer can be done by engineering the thermal elastic and optical properties of the NEMS.

AB - In transmission gas-microphone photoacoustics, in order to protect the microphone and improve the Signal to Noise Ratio of the experiment, a thin non-transparent layer is applied on the surface of the sample. When the applied layer is not illuminated – the incident light is passed through the sample, instead, and all the transmitted radiation is absorbed at the non-illuminated side of the system – optical absorption properties of the sample are preserved in the recorded photoacoustic response [1-3]. Thermoelastic component of photoacoustic response is based on the integral of temperature distribution in the sample. However, in the described configuration, the amplitude ratio and the phase difference of surface temperature variations can notably influence the direction and the intensity of the thermoelastic movement of the sample, thus modifying the induced photoacoustic response. Herein, the analysis of surface temperature variations is done, aimed at the prediction of thermoelastic component of the induced photoacoustic response, and the sensitivity of the described model to the alterations of optical absorption coefficient is analyzed and discussed.

AB - The idea of this paper is to develop a method for determination thermal diffusivity, linear expansion coefficient and thickness of a semiconductor sample from photoacoustic phase measurement by using neural network. The neural network has been trained on photoacoustic phases obtained from a theoretical model of measured signal for Si n-type in the range of 20Hz to 20kHz. For the analysis of parameter determination from phases, we trained phase neural networks on a large database obtained from numerical experiments in the expected range of parameter changes. An analysis of a theoretical photoacoustic model with a phase neural network is demonstrated. The advantages of using a phase neural network with high accuracy and precision in prediction depending on the number of epochs are presented, as well as analyzes of the application of random Gaussian noise to the network in order to better predict the experimental photoacoustic signal.

AB - Polylactide (PLA) or polylactic acid is a biodegradable and biocompatible biomaterial obtained from lactic acid, extracted from sugar cane or corn starch. Due to its biocompatibility, after application, it will cause a minimal reaction of the organism, and by virtue of its biodegradability, it will facilitate postoperative recovery because there is no need for its removal. It is often in combination with other compounds to fulfill the requirement about properties which implant need to have. In this review, this will be described in which areas of medicine apply this biomaterial and in which forms. We will see that this material can be made various implants such as surgical sutures, tiles, screws, coatings, capsules and tissue matrices and that this application is especially important in surgical branches of medicine.

AB - In this work, the influence of photogenerated excess carriers on thermodiffusion and thermoelastic mechanisms in the total photoacoustic signal is analyzed. Optically excited ntype silicon with light periodically modulated in the audio range from 20 to 20kHz showed that photogenerated excess carriers, with bulk and surface carrier recombination, lead to creation of slow thermal source (compared to fast source caused by photo-excited phonon) that have effects on thermodiffusion and thermoelastic mechanisms of the total photoacoustic signal at frequencies up to 1kHz, but also cause additional, plasmaelastic bending of semiconductor, which has an influence on the total photoacoustic signal at frequencies greater than 10kHz.

AB - We present the temperature distribution predictions for photothermal systems by considering an extension of dual-phase lag. It is an extension of the GCE-II and GCE-III models with a fractional dual-phase lag from kinetic relaxation time. Solving the one-dimensional problem considering a planar and periodic excitation, we obtained the temperature distribution and the Photoacoustic (PA) signal for the transmission setup. We also analyze the effects of fractional order derivatives and kinetic relaxation time. It is shown that the derived models have promising results that could be used to explain the experimentally observed behavior of PA signals measured on thin films with an inhomogeneous internal structure.

AB - In this paper, the influence of the applied dye layer on surface temperature variations of polyamide sampleis investigated. The sample, obtained by laser sintering of PA2200 industrial powder, is irradiated by a modulated laser beam, while the applied layer is not excited directly. Dynamic component of temperature change at sample surface is considered, in both transmission and reflexion configuration, as the key componetn in the formation of photoacoustic resopnse.

AB - Laboratory-built measuring device, based on pulse photoacoustic (PA) effect, which allows the measurement of optical and acoustic signals in time domain, is presented. The experimental setup is described and the device specifications are given in detail. Optical and PA signals are measured in a time range from 10 μs to 10 s, for different samples and conditions. As an example, the experimental results for Si square membrane (Si chip with 5 x 5 mm frame and 3 × 3 mm square membrane, 32 μm thick, used in micromechanic devices) are presented. The square membrane Si chips were prepared by wet anisotropic bulk micromachining process. The applicability of the measured PA signal in the characterization of semiconductors and micromechanical structures is discussed.

AB - In this paper, a self-consistent inverse procedure is developed for the estimation of linear thermal expansion coefficient and thermal diffusivity of solids from transmission photoacoustic measurement. This procedure consists of two single-parameter fitting processes applied alternately: phase data are fitted by shifting thermal diffusion coefficient, while amplitude data are fitted by shifting thermal expansion coefficient. Each fitting process uses the resulting parameter of the other, previously finished one, thus converging to the best solution-pair achievable. In numerical experiments, the convergence proves to be very fast. The achieved parameter estimation error is as low as 1%, and it can be lowered further more by increasing the fitting resolution in parameter space. The application of the procedure on experimentally obtained aluminum photoacoustic response (measurements) on three thickness levels returns the estimates of its thermal diffusion and thermal expansion coefficients within expected literature boundaries.

AB - This paper presents the model of surface temperature variations, resulting from the photothermal effect induced in a “thin film – highly absorbing surface layer” structure, where the thin film is irradiated. The influence of the optical absorption coefficient and sample thickness on the induced temperature gradient is analyzed. It is shown that, depending on the product of these parameters (optical absorbance) in the described structure, the phenomenon of inverse temperature gradient can occur, further influencing the direction and the magnitude of thermoelastic displacement.

AB - In this paper, the influence of the input and output data scaling and normalization on the neural network overall performances is investigated aimed at inverse problem-solving in photoacoustics of semiconductors. The logarithmic scaling of the photoacoustic signal amplitudes as input data and numerical scaling of the sample thermal parameters as output data are presented as useful tools trying to reach maximal network precision. Max and min–max normalizations to the input data are presented to change their numerical values in the dataset to common scales, without distorting differences. It was demonstrated in theory that the largest network prediction error of all targeted parameters is obtained by a network with non-scaled output data. Also, it was found out that the best network prediction was achieved with min–max normalization of the input data and network predicted output data scale within the range of [1–10]. Network training and prediction performances analyzed with experimental input data show that the benefits and improvements of input and output scaling and normalization are not guaranteed but are strongly dependent on a specific problem to be solved.
