AB - The influence of the microstructure on the oxidation behavior of two-phase near stoichiometric RuAl produced by arc melting was investigated. The oxidation was conducted at 1000 degreesC. The oxide scale growth and phase formation were studied using scanning electron microscopy, focused ion beam microscopy and in situ X-ray diffraction. The microstructure of the samples consisted of RuAl grains with continuous or isolated intergranular phase composed of Ru(Al) or Ru(Al)-RuAl eutectic. The Ru(Al) intergranular layer is prone to oxidation, which was not observed in samples with intergranular Ru(Al)-RuAl eutectic. Porous, poor-protective alpha-Al2O3 scales were formed. A region with periodic Aluminum oxide/Ruthenium oxide banded layers was developed beneath the external alpha-Al2O3 scale. Scale growth follows a linear rate law. (C) 2005 Elsevier Ltd. AB - The manifestations of dynamic strain ageing in a commercial 2090 Al - Li alloy were investigated in a wide range of temperatures (-40 to 100 degrees C) and strain rates (4.16x10(-5) to 4.16x10(-3) s(-1)). Serrated yielding, as a macroscopic manifestation of dynamic strain ageing, occurs under all testing conditions. Negative strain-rate sensitivity of the flow stress is also observed. Temperature rise and strain rate reduction cause the increase of the yield strength and the work-hardening rate, as well as the decrease of elongation - the behavior being typical for the range in which C-type serrations appear. These phenomena are related to the dislocation substructure, in which features characteristic for solute atoms blocking of dislocations and Orowan bypassing are observed.

AB - Two Zn-27Al-3Cu-3Al(2)O(3) (wt.%) composites with different particle size (approximately 12 and 250 mum) of Al2O3 powder were produced by a compocasting process, i.e. Al2O3 particles were continuously added to a semi-solid melt which was vigorously stirred. Comparative investigations of microstructure [scanning electron microscope (SEM), energy dispersive spectrometry (EDS)] and compression strength (from room temperature to 170 degreesC) of as-cast alloy and composites were carried out. Composites exhibit higher strength than the as-cast alloy. The strengthening effect of smaller Al2O3 particles is more pronounced than the effect of much larger particles. AB - Aluminum as the base of offset printing plates should make good contact with wetting agents and the light sensitive layer and should be resistant to wear and cracking. In order to achieve this, the aluminum is roughened and eventually anodized. A thin, electrochemically deposited chromium layer is used as the non-printing element in bimetallic offset printing forms. Chromium shows excellent wettability and wear resistance. The possibility of chemical deposition of chromium on aluminum from an alkaline solution is examined in this paper The presence of chromium was confirmed and measured by EDAX. A difference in the spectral reflection characteristic between chromium-treated and non-treated specimens was also detected. An influence of a chromium layer on an aluminum surface was examined by water drop spreading. Chromium-treated samples showed better wettability than non-treated samples, but they are less wettable than anodized samples.

AB - We have determined frequencies of alleles and genotypes at angiotensinl-converting enzyme (ACE) locus by polymerase chain reaction (PCR) in the healthy population of Belgrade. We also studied the association of this polymorphism with blood pressure (BP) level. When we controlled the other cardiovascular risk factors, moderate association of borderline significance between DD genotype and hypertension (HT) (OR = 1.88, 95% CI, 1.00 to 3.56, P = 0.050) was noted. We concluded that DD genotype of ACE locus predicts HT independently of other factors. No significant effect of the ACE gene polymorphism on systolic and diastolic BP is found by MANCOVA. We hypothesize that ACE is not involved as much in determining the BP values as it is involved in modulation of blood-pressure genes.

AB - This paper describes a comparative study of the hardness characteristics, mechanical properties, microstructures, and fracture mechanisms of the thermite welded rail steel joints before and after heat treatment. It has been found that heat treatment of the welded joint improves the mechanical properties (UTS and elongation), and changes the fracture mechanism from brittle to ductile. Improved strength and elongation are attributed to the finer ferrite-pearlite microstructure and the different fracture mechanism. Microporosity and numerous inclusions were seen on the fracture surface of the welded joint. The chemical composition of the inclusions indicated that the molten thermite mixture had reacted with the magnesite lining of the ladle and the feeder. (C) Elsevier Science Inc., 1999. AB - Intermetallic compounds have long been recognized as potentially useful structural materials, Ni3Al aluminides possess excellent oxidation resistance at high temperatures as well as good high-temperature strength, This paper reviews the progress which has been made during the last few years in the research and development of Ni3Al aluminides. Comparative results on microstructural and mechanical properties (compression) of Ni3Al-base aluminide produced by powder metallurgy (PM), vacuum melting and casting processes have been reported. Fine-grained PM aluminide exhibits the higher strength than the coarse-grained as-cast material. Ductility is not significantly affected by the grain size.

AB - A comparative study of the microstructure, mechanical properties and fractography of Ni3Al macro- and microalloyed intermetallics produced by powder metallurgy (PM) and standard vacuum melting and casting processes has been carried out. Non-porous PM compacts were obtained by vacuum hot pressing of powders produced either by gas atomization or by a rotating electrode process. All materials showed a positive temperature dependence of the compression yield strength. The maximum strength was attained between 600 and 700 degrees C, then the decrease occurs. With increase in temperature the ductility of all materials slightly decreased to a minimum and then abruptly increased. Values of mechanical properties of PM compacts were higher than those of as-cast material. There is a correlation between the fracture morphology and the ductility of Ni3Al, i.e. the higher ductility corresponds to transgranular fracture, while the minimum ductility is a consequence of intergranular fracture.
