AB - The emerging threat of bacterial resistance to antibiotics prompts the urgent search for biomaterials for the treatment of infectious disease. Here we report on the synthesis and characterization of a multiphasic nanocomposite comprising magnetic iron oxide and silver nanoparticles. The method of synthesis involved the combustion of a metalorganic complex and reduction of the silver ions that were exchanged and/or adsorbed on the surface of iron oxide. Different physical and chemical treatments coupled to the reduction process, including ultrasound and Lugol's iodine solution, respectively, homogenized the distribution of the silver nanoparticles on the iron oxide phase. Remarkably, using ascorbic acid as a reductant enhanced the magnetic properties of the material as a result of the reduction of the magnetic matrix alongside the silver cations. The treatment with ultrasound detached large amounts of silver from the iron oxide phase and resulted in the lowest amount of silver incorporated in the nanocomposite. Despite that, this treatment led to the highest antibacterial activity against both Gram-positive and Gram-negative strains, indicating that the homogeneity of the distribution of silver on the iron oxide matrix is a more important determinant of the antibacterial performance than the amount of silver incorporated in the material. At the same time, the treatment with Lugol's iodine equally increased the distribution homogeneity, but induced excessive ion exchange and crystal lattice substitutions, thereby adversely affecting the antibacterial performance. This has indicated that the mode of binding silver to iron oxide can compensate for the positive effects of homogeneous distribution with respect to the antibacterial performance.

AB - Magnetic anisotropy in pentagonal bipyramidal complexes of Co(II) (1 and 2), Fe(III) (3 and 4), and Ni(II) (5) with a 2,2′-[2,6-pyridinediylbis(ethylidyne-1-hydrazinyl-2-ylidene)]bis[N,N,N-trimethyl-2-oxoethanaminium] equatorial ligand and isothiocyanato axial ligands has been investigated by magnetic susceptibility measurements, powder X-band electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) spectroscopy, Mössbauer spectroscopy, ab initio, and ligand-field density functional theory (LFDFT) calculations. The studied complexes display three distinct types of magnetic anisotropy. Co(II) complexes (1 and 2) show an easy plane anisotropy with large and positive D values and negligible rhombicity. The Ni(II) complex (5) has uniaxial magnetic anisotropy with a negative D value. Fe(III) complexes (3 and 4) have small zero-field splitting (ZFS) parameters. Theoretical modeling is used to rationalize the magnetic anisotropy in these systems and to identify the most important excited states that are responsible for the zero-field splitting. These excitations are a consequence of the electronic structure of the central metal ion in ideal pentagonal bipyramidal coordination.

AB - Graphene quantum dots (GQD) are atom-thick nanodimensional carbon, very attractive for the application in theranostics due to their excellent physico-chemical and biological properties. However, their immunoregulatory properties are insufficiently investigated, especially for human immune cells. We found that non-toxic doses of GQD inhibit the production of proinflammatory and T helper (Th)1 cytokines, and augment the production of anti-inflammatory and Th2 cytokines by human peripheral blood mononuclear cells. While unable to affect purified T cells directly, GQD impaired the differentiation and functions of monocyte-derived dendritic cells (DC), lowering their capacity to stimulate T cell proliferation, development of Th1 and Th17 cells, and T-cell mediated cytotoxicity. Additionally, GQD-treated DC potentiated Th2 polarization, and induced suppressive CD4+CD25hiFoxp3hi regulatory T cells. After internalization in a dynamin-independent, cholesterol-dependent manner, GQD lowered the ROS generation and nuclear translocation of NF-B in DC. The activity of mammalian target of rapamycin (mTOR) was reduced by GQD, which correlated with the increase in transcription of autophagy genes and autophagic flux in DC. Genetic suppression of autophagy impaired the pro-tolerogenic effects of GQD on DC. Our results suggest that GQD-triggered autophagy promotes tolerogenic functions in monocyte-derived DC, which could be beneficial in inflammatory T-cell mediated pathologies, but also harmful in GQD-based anti-cancer therapy.

In complex 1 intra-dimer ferromagnetic coupling between Ni2+ ions (J= +12.0(2) cm(-1)) and inter-dimer antiferromagnetic interaction (delta = -0.8(3) cm(-1)) were observed. AB - Octahedral and square-planar isothiocyanato complexes of Ni(II) with the condensation derivative of 2-(diphenylphosphino)benzaldehyde and Girards T reagent were synthesized and characterized by elemental analysis, IR spectroscopy and X-ray crystallography. Results of magnetic measurements for octahedral Ni(II) complex were also reported. In all the complexes the ligand is coordinated as tridentate via the phosphorus, the imine nitrogen and the carbonyl oxygen atoms while the remaining coordination positions are occupied with thiocyanato anions. Coordination of deprotonated phosphine ligand results in formation of square-planar complexes, while the octahedral complex was formed with protonated ligand. Reaction energetics with both forms of ligand were studied by the means of DFT and results were in complete agreement with experimental observations. Furthermore, ligand field splitting analysis gave the deeper insight in the relationship of the isolated complex coordination environment and protonation of the ligand. (C) 2015 Elsevier Ltd. AB - High conducting polyaniline (PANI) nanofibres deposited onto glassy
carbon support were studied in sulphuric (1mol dm-3 H2SO4) and
hydrochloric (1mol dm-3 HCl) acid by both potentiodynamic and complex
impedance methods. A large charge storage capacity was obtained in each
of investigated acid solutions, particularly in HCl one. For instance, specific
capacity amounting to 340 Fg-1 was observed potentiodynamically in 1mol
dm-3 HCl at a scan rate of 10 mVs-1.

AB - This paper presents the values of concentration of total Sr, as well as the
activity concentration of radioactive isotope 90Sr in waste water samples
taken around the coal-fired power plant "Nikola Tesla A". Also,
conductivity and pH value of these water samples were determined.
Concentration of total Sr was determined by atomic absorption
spectrometry. Determination of 90Sr content is based on the radiochemical
analytical separation of 90Y from the sample and measuring its activity after
the establishment of radioactive equilibrium with 90Sr. The obtained results
for the concentration of total Sr ranged between 0.1 and 1.3 mg/L. The
obtained activity concentration of 90Sr was from 0.015 to 0.037 Bq/L.

AB - Complexes of Pd(II) and Fe(III) with the condensation derivative of 2-(diphenylphosphino)benzaldehyde and ethyl carbazate were synthesized, characterized, and their antimicrobial activity was evaluated. The structures of the Pd(II) and Fe(III) complexes in solid state were determined by IR, elemental analysis and X-ray analysis. The structure of Pd(II) complex in solution was determined by NMR spectroscopy. Results of magnetic measurements for Fe(III) complex were reported. In both complexes the ligand is coordinated as tridentate via the phosphorus, the imine nitrogen and the carbonyl oxygen atoms. Results of antimicrobial activity investigation indicate that the activity of the ligand is enhanced upon complexation, and that the MIC values of the iron complex to some bacterial strains are not much higher than those of cefotaxime.
