AB - Diatomite (diatomaceous earth) and clay minerals deposits from the mining basin Kolubara, Serbia, are natural materials with high economic potential in many fields. As received and treated materials, diatomite and clay were characterized using X-ray diffraction, mercury intrusion porosimetry, particle size distribution, scanning electron microscopy, and Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy. Activity concentrations for natural radionuclides 40K, 226Ra and 232Th and anthropogenic radionuclide 137Cs in diatomite and clay were determined by gamma spectrometry with HPGe detector. For diatomite and clay, the mean activity concentrations of 226Ra, 232Th and 40K were found to be 9, 26 and 173 Bq kg-1 and 19, 26 and 470 Bq kg-1, respectively. In the present study was to show that these materials are environmentally safe for further use in many fields.

AB - The present work represents hydrogel as a composite based on sodium alginate and
mesoporous SBA-15. The hydrogel was obtained by modifying mesoporous SBA-15 by a
microencapsulation method of the SBA-15 in the sodium alginate matrix. The solution of
CaCl2 provided a gelation complex of sodium alginate/SBA-15 in a rigid gel-like
structure. The sodium alginate/SBA-15 hydrogels beads of about 3 mm diameter were
prepared. Composite material was characterized by using powder X-ray diffraction,
scanning electron microscopy and energy dispersive X-ray analysis. This composite
material may have potential application in removal of metal ions – pollutants from
aqueous solutions.

AB - Anorthite ceramics was fabricated from calcium exchanged Na-LTA zeolite. The powder compacts of Ca-LTA zeolite were sintered at different temperatures ranging between 1100 and 1400°C. It was found that the temperature of 1100°C was sufficiently high to trigger formation of anorthite which stayed stable even at temperature as high as 1400°C. The highest relative density and the lowest open porosity were measured in samples sintered at 1200°C for 3 h. The effect of milling time of Ca-LTA zeolite precursor on density, microstructure and mechanical properties of samples sintered at 1200°C for 3 h was investigated. The particle size refinement appeared to be beneficial in accelerating densification process and improving mechanical properties. The density, compressive strength and hardness of anorthite ceramics obtained from non-milled precursor were measured to be 70.5 %TD, 64 MPa and 1.45 GPa, respectively. On the other side the anorthite ceramics obtained from 24-hour-long milled zeolite precursor had density of 83.9 %TD, compressive strength of 101 MPa and hardness of 3.44 GPa.

AB - A promising method for removal of Cs ions from water and their incorporation into stable crystal structure ready for safe and permanent disposal was described. Cs-exchanged X zeolite was hot-pressed at temperature ranging from 800 to 950 °C to fabricate dense pollucite ceramics. It was found that the application of external pressure reduced the pollucite formation temperature. The effect of sintering temperature on density, phase composition and mechanical properties was investigated. The highest density of 92.5 %TD and the highest compressive strength of 79 MPa were measured in pollucite hot-pressed at 950 °C for 3 h. Heterogeneity of samples obtained at 950 °C was determined using scanning electron microscopy. The pollucite hot-pressed at 950 °C had low linear thermal expansion coefficient of ∼4.67 × 10−6 K−1 in the temperature range from 100 to 1000 °C. © 2019

AB - Three different forms of Cu powder particles obtained by either galvanostatic electrolysis or a non-electrolytic method were analyzed by a scanning electron microscope (SEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD) and particle size distribution (PSD). Electrolytic procedures were performed under different hydrogen evolution conditions, leading to the formation of either 3D branched dendrites or disperse cauliflower-like particles. The third type of particles were compact agglomerates of the Cu grains, whose structural characteristics indicated that they were formed by a non-electrolytic method. Unlike the sharp tips that characterize the usual form of Cu dendrites, the ends of both the trunk and branches were globules in the formed dendrites, indicating that a novel type of Cu dendrites was formed in this investigation. Although the macro structures of the particles were extremely varied, they had very similar micro structures because they were constructed by spherical grains. The Cu crystallites were randomly oriented in the dendrites and compact agglomerates of the Cu grains, while the disperse cauliflower-like particles showed (220) and (311) preferred orientation. This indicates that the applied current density affects not only the morphology of the particles, but also their crystal structure. The best performance, defined by the largest specific surface area and the smallest particle size, was by the galvanostatically produced powder consisting of disperse cauliflower-like particles.

AB - Production of copper powders by the potentiostatic electrolysis under different hydrogen evolution conditions was investigated. Copper powders were characterized by the scanning electron microscope (SEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), particle size distribution (PSD), and by the determination of the specific surface area (SSA) of the formed powders. Depending on quantity of hydrogen generated during electrolysis, the two types of particles were formed: dendrites and cauliflower-like particles. The dendrites were formed without, while cauliflower-like particles with the quantity of evolved hydrogen enough to achieve strong effect on hydrodynamic conditions in the near-electrode layer. Although macro structure of the particles was very different, they showed similar micro structure. Namely, both types of the particles consisted of small agglomerates of approximately spherical Cu grains at the micro level. The existence of the spherical morphology was just responsible for random orientation of Cu crystallites in both types of particles. The SSA of cauliflower-like particles was more than two times larger than that of the dendrites, while their size was considerably smaller than that of the dendritic particles. In this way, the useful benefit of Cu powder formation in the conditions of vigorous hydrogen evolution is shown. © 2019 The Nonferrous Metals Society of China

AB - The processes of electrodeposition from magnesium nitrate hexahydrate melt by galvanostatic regime of electrolysis have been analyzed. The structure of the formed particles was examined by X-ray diffraction (XRD), which revealed formation of MgO/Mg(OH)2 mixture by molten salt electrolysis. Morphologies of the produced deposits were characterized by scanning electron microscopy (SEM)technique. The flower-like forms constructed from very thin needles with sharp tips were predominately formed by electrodeposition at various current densities and with various amounts of electricity. Aside from that, holes formed from detached hydrogen bubbles of various shapes and sizes, from dish-like holes to those resulting in honeycomb-like structures were also observed. Mechanism of formation of the flower-like forms has been elucidated applying the general theory of disperse deposits formation which is based on the concept of local (spherical and cylindrical)diffusion fields. It is shown that the growth of the needles occurs under the conditions of predominant spherical diffusion control, while the contribution of the cylindrical diffusion to the final shapes was negligible. Comparison with morphologies of deposits obtained by electrodepositions from aqueous magnesium salt electrolytes was also made and discussed. © 2019 Elsevier B.V.

AB - Mesoporous silica SBA-15 materials of high specific surface area (similar to 700 m(2) g(-1)) were synthesized by using block copolymer Pluronic P123 as template and tetraethoxysilane as silica source. The obtained materials were characterized by XRD, nitrogen adsorption desorption measurements, SEM, EDS and AFM analysis. It was found that small modifications of synthesis conditions influenced the morphological features of the synthesized SBA-15 samples. The SEM analysis had shown that the SBA-15 synthesized at lower temperature and longer time of reaction (80 degrees C, 48 h) provided elongated rod-shaped grains about 1 mu m long. The other sample synthesized at higher temperature and shorter time of reaction (100 degrees C, 24 h) had rounded grains and grains of regular spherical shape with diameters ranging from 0.5 to 2 mu m. The EDS analysis confirmed that the particles of both synthesized samples were of the SiO2 content. In addition, the AFM analysis had shown different surface morphologies of the materials synthesized under various conditions.

AB - Dense CsAlSi5O12 was successfully obtained by hot pressing of Cs-exchanged clinoptilolite at 900 degrees C. Simultaneous application of high temperature and mechanical pressure allowed formation of CsAlSi5O12 at temperature considerably lower than 1150 degrees C which was the lowest reported temperature of CsAlSi5O12 formation in pressureless sintered Cs-exchanged clinoptilolite. CsAlSi5O12 formation was preceded by complete amorphisation of Cs-exchanged clinoptilolite in temperature range between 700 and 900 degrees C. Bearing in mind that clinoptilolite possesses high affinity for Cs cation it is believed that hot pressing of Cs-exchanged clinoptilolite might be an efficient way to immobilize radioactive Cs by its incorporation into crystal lattice of stable CsAlSi5O12. The samples sintered at 950 degrees C had relative density about 84% of theoretical density and open porosity of only 6% which is expected to result in low Cs leaching rate.

AB - Cesium aluminosilicate phases are of the great interest as possible host for Cs immobilization in radioactive waste management. The possibility to use zeolite as a host material for radioactive Cs immobilization was investigated. Cs-exchanged forms of clinoptilolite and 13X which were prepared by ion-exchange treatment were compacted. The powders compacts of exchanged zeolites were thermally treated at 1200 °C. The XRD analysis showed that Cs was successfully immobilized after heat treatment by formation of stable cesium-aluminosilicate ceramic forms. Thermal and mechanical properties of the sintered samples were investigated. From the perspective of these characteristics, Cs-exchanged zeolite (clinoptilolite and 13 X) can be considered as a potential material for safe waste disposal.

AB - The aim of the present study was to synthesize a composite of raw interstratified montmorillonite-kaolinite clay (Mt-K) with TiO2 as an additive by mechanochemical activation and investigate its usability as low-cost adsorbent for simultaneous removal of heavy metals from acidic aqueous solutions. The composite synthesized with amorphous TiO2 (TiO(2,)a) showed a significantly better removal ability of heavy metals from highly acidic solutions (pH = 2.0-4.0) compared with the Mt-K milled for an optimum period of time of 19 h (Mt-K,m) and composite synthesized with crystalline TiO2 (TiO(2,)c). As both of the composites showed the same morphologies, the same distribution of TiO2 particles on the clay matrix, the same particle size distribution (PSD) dependencies and point of zero charge (pH(PZC)) values, it has to be noticed that the difference in the adsorption behavior lies only in the different crystalline forms of the additive, i.e. TiO2 that was used for the composite preparation. It has been shown that 20% of TiO(2,)a was the optimal amount of an additive in the composite to achieve improved adsorption ability. (C) 2014 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

AB - Fine tungsten carbide (WC) powder was prepared by solid state reaction between tungsten powder (W) and activated carbon cloth as a new carbon (C) source. The effect of temperature and time of heat treatment as well as the effect of C/W ratio on WC phase formation was studied. The results obtained by X-ray powder diffraction (XRPD) show that obtained powder is single WC. Microstructure and morphology was determinate by means of scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Brunauer-Emmett-Teller (BET) method was used for examining specific surface area and texture of obtained powders. It was found that WC powder was successfully synthesized in excess carbon after eight-hour heat treatment at relatively low temperature (1000 degrees C). (C) 2014 Elsevier Ltd and Techna Group S.r.l. AB - Sphene (CaTiSiO5), a calcium titanosilicate ceramic has been prepared from a powder mixture of CaCO3, TiO2 and SiO2 using vibromilling for homogenization and activation of precursors. The mechanochemical process initially yielded amorphous powders, which on further calcination, crystallized to yield sphene ceramic. The evolution of the phase composition with thermal treatment was investigated by X-ray powder diffraction (XRPD). Powder morphology and particle size distribution were analyzed by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and laser diffraction, respectively. Rietveld refinement was employed to get the structural information of the synthesized powder. AB - To understand the influence of various crystallographic phases on hydrogen storage properties, ball milling of MgH2 with hexagonal (alpha) and cubic (beta) SiC have been performed. Structural characterization of all samples has been done by X-ray diffraction (XRD) analysis, particle size analysis and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Investigation of hydrogen desorption properties of prepared nanocomposites has been done using temperature programmed desorption (TPD) technique. Despite the results of structural and morphological characterization of obtained nanocomposites are very similar, TPD spectra show significant differences regarding existence of intermediate temperature peak. In the sample milled with hexagonal SiC this peak originates both from H-2 and H2O, while in the sample milled with cubic phase it only comes from H2O. Both samples exhibit low temperature H-2 peak at 385 K. (C) 2010 Professor T. Nejat Veziroglu. Published by Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

The zircon powder was mixed with activated carbon as a reducing agent and heattreated in a controlled flow atmosphere of Ar. AB - The Ni-Mo-O alloy powders were electrodeposited from ammonium sulfate containing electrolytes for different Ni/Mo ions concentration ratios. Electrodeposition was investigated by the polarization measurements. The morphology, chemical composition and phase composition of these powders were investigated using SEM, EDS, AAS and XRD analysis. The EDS and AAS analysis showed that the powder composition depends on the Ni/Mo ions concentration ratio, with the Ni/Mo metals ratio in the powders being the same as the one in the solution. The as-deposited alloy powders were nanocrystalline, while after stepwise annealing at 300, 400, 500 and 600 degrees C for 2 h in N(2) atmosphere their crystallinity became more and more pronounced, with the dimension of crystallites increasing with the increase of the annealing temperature. Already after the annealing at 300 degrees C the presence of two phases, MoO(3) and NiMoO(4), was identified by XRD, while SEM analysis showed that the surfaces of powder particles were partially recrystallized. With the increase of the annealing temperature the amount of the NiMoO(4) was found to increase in all powders. For the powder electrodeposited from the solution with the highest Ni/Mo ratio (1/0.3) NiMoO(4) phase was detected together with a small amount of Ni(4)Mo phase, indicating phase transition of MoO(3) into NiMoO(4) (and probably Ni(4)Mo) at the temperature of 600 degrees C.
