AB - The visible-light-responsive inorganic-organic hybrid was prepared by surface modification of commercial TiO2 powder (Degussa P25) with 4-chlorophenol (4-CP). The optical absorption of the hybrid material is red-shifted compared to unmodified TiO2 powder due to the surface charge transfer complex (CTC) formation. The experimental results are supported by the density functional theory (DFT) calculations of the corresponding model cluster. The calculated electronic excitation spectrum is in agreement with the measured reflection spectrum of surface-modified TiO2 powder with 4-CP. The paramagnetic species, generated in the unmodified and surface-modified TiO2 powders upon excitation with ultraviolet and visible light, were identified using low-temperature electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) spectroscopy. The formation of trapped electrons (Ti(III) centers) and the persistent oxygen-centered organic radicals indicated the photoinduced electron transfer from the chemisorbed 4-chlorophenol to the conduction band of TiO2. © 2019 Elsevier B.V.

AB - Size-dependent antimicrobial ability of silver nanoparticles (Ag NPs) supported by amino-functionalized poly(glycidyl methacrylate-co-ethylene glycol dimethacrylate) (poly(GMA-co-EGDMA)) macroporous copolymer was tested against Gram-negative bacteria Escherichia coli. Inorganic/organic hybrids with distinctly different average sizes of Ag NPs (6.6 and 12.1 nm) were prepared by functionalization of poly(GMA-co-EGDMA) with either 1,8-diaminooctane or ammonia, and consequent reduction of silver ions with amino groups. The transmission electron microscopy (TEM), infrared and UV–Vis reflection spectroscopy, elemental analysis, and inductively coupled plasma atomic emission measurements were used to characterize synthesized hybrid materials. Time- and concentration-dependent antimicrobial performances of prepared samples revealed higher reduction rates of E. coli when hybrid with smaller in size Ag NPs was used. The difference between rates of reduction of E. coli for different size Ag NPs is becoming more pronounced by decrease of the concentration of silver. POLYM. AB - Surface modification of titanium dioxide nanoparticles (TiO2 NPs) with the biologically active molecule pyridoxine hydrochloride (vitamin B-6) was found to alter the optical properties. Microstructural characterization involving transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and X-ray diffraction (XRD) analysis revealed that the anatase TiO2 NPs had a narrow size distribution with an average diameter of 45 angstrom. The absorption onset of the surface-modified TiO2 samples was red-shifted by about 0.4 eV compared to the unmodified particles. The mode of binding between vitamin B-6 and the surface Ti atoms was investigated by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR). From the Benesi-Hildebrand plot, the stability constant of the surface complex was found to be of the order 10(2) M-1. The experimental findings were supported by detailed quantum chemical calculations based on the density functional theory (DFT). Agreement was found between the experimentally measured absorption spectra of the TiO2 NPs surface-modified with vitamin B-6 and the theoretically calculated electronic excitation spectra of the corresponding model system.

AB - Alkyd resin/TiO2 nanocomposites (NC) were prepared from short oil alkyd resin and TiO2 nanoparticles (NPs) surface modified with in situ formed imine ligand, based on 3,4-dihydroxybenzaldehyde and oleylamine, or with three gallic acid esters. The short oil alkyd resin was synthesized from sunflower oil, phthalic anhydride, and trimethylolpropane. Unmodified and surface modified TiO2 NPs were examined by transmission electron microscopy. Rheological investigation revealed that prepared dispersions have higher dynamic viscosity than pure alkyd resin. Using different characterization methods it was obtained that NCs have similar thermooxidative stability as alkyd resin, lower glass transition temperature, better barrier properties, enhanced hardness, better chemical resistance, and lower adhesion to the metal, except in the case of NC prepared using TiO2 NPs surface modified with imine, which exhibited better adhesion to the metal than pure alkyd resin.

AB - Unsaturated polyester resin (UPe)-based nanocomposites and fumed silica Aerosil R812S, R805 and R816, and R200 modified with phenyl terminal group, R200NPh, were prepared. UPe resins were synthesized from maleic anhydride and products of glycolysis, obtained by polyethylene terephthalate depolymerization with dipropylene glycol in the presence of tetrabutyl titanate catalyst. The obtained unsaturated polyesters were characterized by acid, hydroxyl, and iodine values and by FTIR and NMR analysis. The microstructural analysis of the prepared nanocomposites, performed by using transmission electron microscopy, confirmed that silica nanoparticles formed chain-like aggregates in the polymer matrix. The presence of modified silica nanoparticles had no influence on the glass transition temperature and thermal stability of polyester matrix. The tensile modulus, stress at break, and hardness of cured products increased with increasing silica content. The impact strength of cured samples was not influenced by the silica content. AB - The mechanical properties of nanocomposites obtained by incorporation of fairly uniform hematite nanorods (alpha-Fe2O3 NRs) into epoxy resin were studied as a function of the content of the inorganic phase. A thorough microstructural characterization of the alpha-Fe2O3 NRs and the nanocomposites was performed using transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and atomic force microscopy (AFM). The TEM measurements revealed rod-like morphology of the nanofiller with a uniform size distribution (8.5 nmx170 nm, diameterxlength). High-magnification TEM and AFM measurements indicated agglomeration of alpha-Fe2O3 NRs embedded in the epoxy resin. Stress at break, strain at break, elastic modulus and tensile toughness of the nanocomposites were compared with the data obtained for pure epoxy resin. Significant influence of nanofiller on the mechanical properties of epoxy resin, as well as on the glass transition temperature, could be noticed for samples with low contents of the inorganic phase (up to 1 wt. %).

AB - Poly(glycidyl methacrylate-co-ethylene glycol dimethacrylate) (poly(GMA-co-EGDMA) macroporous copolymer decorated with silver nanoparticles was prepared by a modification of poly(GMA-co-EGDMA) in the reaction with arginine, and consequent reduction of silver ions with amino groups. The mercury intrusion porosimetry, transmission electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction, UV-vis reflection spectroscopy, and inductively coupled plasma atomic emission measurements were used to characterize obtained composite. The coordination of silver nanoparticles to the poly(GMA-co-EGDMA) copolymer was studied using infrared spectroscopy. Time dependence and concentration dependence of the antimicrobial efficiency of composite were tested against Gram-negative bacteria Escherichia coli, Gram-positive bacteria Staphylococcus aureus, and fungus Candida albicans. The composite ensured maximum reduction of both bacteria, while the fungi reduction reached satisfactory 96.8%. Preliminary antimicrobial efficiency measurements using laboratory flow setup indicated potential applicability of composite for wastewater treatment. (C) 2015 Society of Plastics Engineers

AB - Novel TiO2-PANI core-shell nanocomposite, prepared by in situ oxidative polymerization of aniline in the presence of TiO2 nanoparticles surface modified with vitamin B6, was used to reinforce epoxy resin. The size of prepared TiO2 nanoparticles and TiO2-PANI nanocomposite were determined by a transmission electron microscopy (TEM). The surface modification of TiO2 nanoparticles was confirmed by FTIR and UV-vis spectroscopy, while the morphology of PANI and TiO2-PANI nanocomposite was investigated by scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The influence of TiO2-PANI nanocomposite on glass transition temperature, dielectric and dynamic mechanical properties, thermooxidative stability, mechanical and anticorrosion properties of epoxy based nanocomposites was investigated and compared to the properties of epoxy/PANI nanocomposites. It has been observed that the glass transition temperature of epoxy resin increases after introduction of PANI and TiO2-PANI nanocomposite, as well as with increasing their content. Prepared nanocomposites exhibited higher value of dielectric constant than pure epoxy resin. Epoxy based coating containing TiO2-PANI nanocomposite showed lower dielectric loss, higher hardness and better anticorrosion properties than pure epoxy resin and epoxy/PANI nanocomposite. AB - The synthetic procedures for preparation of free-standing and attached to polymer support surface modified TiO2 nanoparticles (NPs) with absorption extended into the visible spectral region due to charge transfer complex formation were developed. The one-step synthesis of colloids consisting of surface-modified TiO2 NPs is based on the reaction between titanium(IV) isopropoxide (TTIP) and lauryl galatte in nonprotic organic solvents (tetrahydrofuran, xylol, chloroform). The poly(GMA-co-EGDMA) copolymer decorated with surface-modified TiO2 NPs was obtained in two steps. First, copolymer was functionalized with dopamine and then treated with TTIP in organic solvent at slightly elevated temperature. Thorough microstructural and optical characterization of free-standing and attached to polymer support surface-modified TiO2 NPs was performed involving transmission electron microscopy as well as absorption and reflection spectroscopy. Infrared spectroscopy was used to understand coordination of ligands to surface Ti atoms. Photoredox chemistry of surface-modified TiO2 NPs attached to the polymer support was tested. Enhanced photooxidative ability of composite was demonstrated by degradation of organic dye crystal violet under visible light illumination, i.e., using photons with energy smaller than 2.75 eV. On the other hand, photocatalytic hydrogen production was used to demonstrate photoreduction ability of surface modified TiO2 NPs attached to the polymer support.

AB - Nanocomposites (NCs) with different content of silver nanoparticles (Ag NPs) embeded in polystyrene (PS) matrix were prepared by in situ bulk radical polymerization. The nearly monodisperse Ag NPs protected with oleylamine were synthesized via organic solvo-thermal method and further used as a filler. The as-prepared spherical Ag NPs with diameter of 7.0 +/- 1.5 nm were well dispersed in the PS matrix. The structural properties of the resulting Ag/PS NCs were characterized by transmission electron microscope (TEM) and Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy, while optical properties were characterized using optical absorption measurements. The gel permeation chromatography (GPC) measurements showed that the presence of Ag NPs stabilized with oleylamine has no influence on the molecular weight and polydispersity of the PS matrix. The influence of silver content on the thermal properties of Ag/PS NCs was investigated by thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) and differential scanning calorimetry (DSC). The results indicated that resistance of PS to thermal degradation was improved upon incorporation of Ag NPs. The Ag/PS NCs have lower glass transition temperatures than net PS because loosely packed oleylamine molecules at the interface caused the increase of free volume and chain segments mobility near the surface of Ag NPs. AB - Epoxy resin/titanium dioxide (epoxy/TiO2) nanocomposites were obtained by incorporation of TiO2 nanoparticles surface modified with gallic acid esters in epoxy resin. TiO2 nanoparticles were obtained by acid catalyzed hydrolysis of titanium isopropoxide and their structural characterization was performed by X-ray diffraction and transmission electron microscopy. Three gallic acid esters, having different hydrophobic part, were used for surface modification of the synthesized TiO2 nanoparticles: propyl, hexyl and lauryl gallate. The gallate chemisorption onto surface of TiO2 nanoparticles was confirmed by Fourier transform infrared and ultraviolet-visible spectroscopy, while the amount of surface-bonded gallates was determined using thermogravimetric analysis. The influence of the surface modified TiO2 nanoparticles, as well as the length of hydrophobic part of the gallate used for surface modification of TiO2 nanoparticles, on glass transition temperature, barrier, dielectric and anticorrosive properties of epoxy resin was investigated by differential scanning calorimetry, water vapor transmission test, dielectric spectroscopy, electrochemical impedance spectroscopy and polarization measurements. Incorporation of surface modified TiO2 nanoparticles in epoxy resin caused increase of glass transition temperature and decrease of the water vapor permeability of epoxy resin. The water vapor transmission rate of epoxy/TiO2 nanocomposites was reduced with increasing hydrophobic part chain length of gallate ligand. Dielectric constant of examined nanocomposites was influenced by gallate used for the modification of TiO2 nanoparticles. The nanocomposites have better anticorrosive properties than pure epoxy resin, because the surface modified TiO2 nanoparticles react as oxygen scavengers, which inhibit steel corrosion by cathodic mechanism. AB - The influence of alkyl gallate surface modified TiO2 nanoparticles on the
rheological properties of long oil alkyd resin, based on soybean oil, was
investigated. Surface modification of TiO2 nanoparticles, obtained by acid
catalyzed hydrolysis of titanium tetraisopropoxide, was performed with
propyl, lauryl or cetyl gallate. The average particle size and the crystal
structure of synthesized nanoparticles were estimated by transmission
electron microscopy and X-ray diffraction. The gallate chemisorption onto
surface of TiO2 nanoparticles was confirmed by FTIR and UV spectroscopy.
The examined dispersions were prepared by the addition of modified TiO2
nanoparticles to the commercial alkyd resin. The viscosity of the prepared
dispersions was higher than viscosity of the pure resin and it increased with
increasing length of hydrophobic part of the gallate used for surface
modification of TiO2 nanoparticles. This occurred because the increase of
their hydrodynamic volume led to the increase of the effective volume
fraction of particles in dispersion.

AB - Composite consisting of silver nanoparticles coordinated to poly(GMA-co-EGDMA) macroporous copolymer was prepared by attachment of amino group to the poly(GMA-co-EGDMA) in the reaction with ethylene diamine, and consequent reduction of silver ions with amino groups at elevated temperature. The infrared measurements indicated that surface of silver nanoparticles is passivated through the coordination of the lone pair on the N atom of the imine present in the skeleton of the poly(GMA-co-EGDMA) copolymer. The inductively coupled plasma atomic emission, UV-Vis reflection spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction, and transmission electron microscopy measurements revealed the high content (52 wt%) of well-separated silver nanoparticles in the size range of 5-10 nm onto composite. Antimicrobial efficiency of composite was tested against Gram-negative bacteria E. coli, Gram-positive bacteria S. aureus, and fungus C. albicans in wide concentration range of composite. The composite ensured almost maximum reduction of both bacteria, while the fungi reduction reached 96.5 %.

AB - Incorporation of surface modified TiO2 nanoparticles into polystyrene (PS) matrix was achieved by in situ bulk radical polymerization of styrene. The surface of TiO2 nanoparticles was modified with four amphiphilic esters of the gallic acid (octyl, decyl, lauryl and cetyl gallate), which have different lengths of hydrophobic alkyl chain (C8C16). FTIR and UV-Vis spectroscopy measurements confirmed the formation of a charge transfer complex between surface Ti atoms and gallic esters. Microstructural characterization of the synthesized nanocomposites revealed that the best dispersion of TiO2 nanoparticles in PS was achieved when the TiO2 surface was modified with octyl gallate. The presence of surface modified TiO2 nanoparticles by different alkyl gallates does not have an influence on the molecular weight and glass transition temperature of PS matrix. On the other hand, thermal and thermo-oxidative stability of PS were significantly improved by incorporation of surface modified TiO2 nanoparticles. The most pronounced improvement of thermal and thermo-oxidative stability was observed for TiO2 nanoparticles surface modified with octyl gallate. POLYM. COMPOS., 2013. AB - Nanocomposites based on poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) and TiO2 nanoparticles were synthesized by in situ radical polymerization of MMA in solution. The surface of TiO2 nanoparticles was modified with four gallic acid esters (octyl, decyl, lauryl and cetyl gallate). The content of gallates present on the surface of TiO2, was calculated from the TGA results. The influence of length of hydrophobic tail of amphiphilic alkyl gallates on dispersability of surface modified TiO2 nanoparticles in PMMA matrix, the molecular weight and glass transition temperature of PMMA, as well as the thermal stability of the prepared PMMA/TiO2 nanocomposites in nitrogen and air was investigated. The influence of content of TiO2 nanoparticles on the properties of these nanocomposites was also examined. The formation of a charge transfer complex between the surface Ti atoms and the gallates was confirmed by FTIR and LIN/spectroscopy. TEM micrographs of the PMMA/TiO2 nanocomposites revealed that degree of TiO2 aggregation can be significantly lowered by increasing the length of aliphatic part of the used gallates. The molecular weight of PMMA slightly decreases with the increase of TiO2 content, indicating that used TiO2 nanoparticles act as radical scavengers during the polymerization of MMA. The presence of surface modified TiO2 nanoparticles do not have an influence on the mobility of PMMA chain segments leading to the same values of glass transition temperature for all investigated samples. Thermal and thermo-oxidative stability of the PMMA matrix are improved by introducing TiO2 nanoparticles modified with gallates. (C) 2012 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

AB - Dynamic mechanical-thermal analysis (DMTA), differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), thermally stimulated depolarization currents (TSDC) and, mainly, broadband dielectric relaxation spectroscopy (DRS) were employed to investigate in detail glass transition and polymer dynamics in silver/poly(methyl methacrylate) (Ag/PMMA) nanocomposites. The nanocomposites were prepared by radical polymerization of MMA in the presence of surface modified Ag nanoparticles with a mean diameter of 5.6 nm dispersed in chloroform. The fraction of Ag nanoparticles in the final materials was varied between 0 and 0.5 wt%, the latter corresponding to 0.055 vol%. The results show that the nanoparticles have practically no effect on the time scale of the secondary beta and gamma relaxations, whereas the magnitude of both increases slightly but systematically with increasing filler content. The segmental alpha relaxation, associated with the glass transition, becomes systematically faster and stronger in the nanocomposites. The glass transition temperature T(g) decreases with increasing filler content of the nanocomposites up to about 10 degrees C. in good correlation by the four techniques employed. Finally, the elastic modulus decreases slightly but systematically in the nanocomposites, both in the glassy and in the rubbery state. The results are explained in terms of plasticization of the PMMA matrix, due to constraints imposed to packing of the chains by the Ag nanoparticles, and, at the same time, of the absence of strong polymer-filler interactions, due to the surface modification of the Ag nanoparticles by oleylamine at the stage of preparation. AB - Incorporation of inorganic nanoparticles can significantly affect the properties of the polymer matrix. The properties of polymer nanocomposites depend on the type of incorporated nanoparticles, their size and shape, their concentration, and interactions with the polymer matrix. Homogeneity of polymer nanocomposites is influenced very much by the preparation method. In this study, TiO2 nanoparticles surface modified with 6-palmitate ascorbic acid (6-PAA) were encapsulated in poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) by in situ radical polymerization of methyl methacrylate initiated by 2,2-azobisisobutyronitrile (AIBN). The surface modification of the TiO2 nanoparticles was achieved by the formation of a charge transfer complex between TiO2 nanoparticles and 6-palmitate ascorbic acid. The radical polymerization of MMA in the presence of TiO2-PAA nanoparticles was conducted in solution (PMMA/TiO2-PAA-R), in bulk (PMMA/TiO2-PAA-M) or in suspension (PMMA/TiO2-PAA-S). The main purpose of this study was to investigate the influence of the preparation method on the molar masses and thermal properties of PMMA/TiO2-PAA nanocomposite. It was obtained that molar masses of PMMA extracted from the composites had smaller values compared to molar masses of pure PMMA synthesized in the same manner, which indicated that TiO2-PAA nanoparticles affected the reaction of termination. Thermal properties were investigated by DSC and TGA. The values of glass transition temperature, T-g, were influenced by the way the radical polymerization was conducted, even in the case of the pure PMMA. The Tp(g) of composite samples was always smaller than the value of the corresponding PMMA sample and the smallest value was obtained for PMMA/TiO2- PAA-M since they contained the largest amount of low molar mass residue. The TGA results showed that thermal and thermooxidative stability of polymer composites obtained in solution and in suspension was better than for the pure PMMA obtained in the same way.

AB - Surface modified silver nanoparticles dispersed in chloroform were encapsulated in poly(methylmethacrylate) (PMMA) by in-situ radical polymerization of methyl methacrylate initiated by 2,2-azobisisobutyronitrile. The particle size distribution of colloidal silver nanoparticles was determined using transmission electron microscopy. The obtained transparent nanocomposite films were characterized using UV-vis spectroscopy, (1)H NMR spectroscopy and gel permeation chromatography. Effective medium Maxwell-Garnett theory was used in order to explain optical properties of nanocomposite films taking into account inhomogeneous spatial distribution of silver nanoparticles in PMMA matrix. The influence of the silver nanoparticles on the thermal properties of the PMMA matrix was investigated using thermo-gravimetric analysis and differential scanning calorimetry. Thermo-oxidative stability of the PMMA in the presence of low content of inorganic phase is significantly improved. The glass transition temperatures of nanocomposites are slightly lower compared to the pure polymer. (C) 2009 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

AB - Surface modification of nanocrystalline TiO2 particles (45 ) with bidentate benzene derivatives (catechol, pyrogallol, and gallic acid) was found to alter optical properties of nanoparticles. The formation of the inner-sphere charge-transfer complexes results in a red shift of the semiconductor absorption compared to unmodified nanocrystallites. The binding structures were investigated by using FTIR spectroscopy. The investigated ligands have the optimal geometry for chelating surface Ti atoms, resulting in ring coordination complexes (catecholate type of binuclear bidentate binding-bridging) thus restoring in six-coordinated octahedral geometry of surface Ti atoms. From the Benesi-Hildebrand plot, the stability constants at pH 2 of the order 10(3) M-1 have been determined.

AB - The surface of anatase TiO2 nanoparticles, obtained by the controlled hydrolysis of titanium tetrachloride, was modified by 6-palmitate ascorbic acid. The surface modified TiO2 nanoparticles were dispersed in methyl methacrylate and mixed with a appropriate amount of poly(methyl methacrylate) to obtain a syrup. The nano-composite sheets were made by bulk polymerization of the syrup in a glass sandwich cell using 2,2-azobisisobutyronitrile as initiator. The molar masses and molar mass distributions of synthesized poly(methyl methacrylate) samples were determined by gel permeation chromatography. The content of unreacted double bonds in synthesized samples was determined by H-1 NMR spectroscopy. The influence of TiO2 nanoparticles on the thermal stability of the poly(methyl methacrylate) matrix was investigated using thermogravimetric analysis and differential scanning calorimetry. The synthesized samples of poly(methyl methacrylate) have different molar mass and polydispersity depending on the content of the surface modified TiO2 nanoparticles. The values of glass transition temperature of so prepared nanocomposite samples were lower than for pure poly(methyl methacrylate), while the glass transition temperature of samples preheated in inert atmosphere was very similar to the glass transition temperature of pure poly(methyl methacrylate). Also, the thermal stability of nanocomposites in nitrogen and air was different from that of pure PMMA. (c) 2007 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

abstract = "alpha-Fe2O3 nanorods were incorporated into poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) by in situ radical polymerisation of methyl methacrylate initiated by 2,2 -azobisisobutyronitrile. The alpha-Fe2O3 nanorods were synthesized by forced hydrolysis of FeCl3 and structural characterization was performed by X-ray diffraction and transmission electron microscopy. The molar mass and the polydispersity index of synthesized PMMA samples were determined by gel permeation chromatography. The content of residual monomer was determined by H-1 NMR spectroscopy. The influence of alpha-Fe2O3 nanorods on the thermal stability of the polymer was investigated using thermogravimetry and differential scanning calorimetry. The molar mass and polydispersity index of PMMA were dependent on the content of alpha-Fe2O3 nanorods. AB - Surface modification of nanocrystalline TiO2 particles with catechol was found to result in a red shift of the semiconductor absorption compared to unmodified nanocrystallites. The undercoordinated defect sites at TiO2 surface are the source of novel enhanced and selective reactivity of the nanoparticle toward bidentate ligand binding. Catechol, an enediol ligand, have the optimal geometry for chelating surface Ti atoms, resulting in a five-membered ring coordination complex and restoration of six-coordinated octahedral geometry of surface Ti atoms.
