AB - Surface modification of magnetic nanoparticles with poly-L-lysine, proline, and tryptophan was used to design potential theranostic agents for the application in cancer diagnosis and radionuclide-hyperthermia therapy. Characterization of bare and functionalized magnetic nanoparticles was performed in detail. The transparency of the examined magnetic nanoparticles was measured in the non-alternating magnetic field for a complete and better understanding of hyperthermia. For the first time amino acid-functionalized magnetic nanoparticles were labeled with theranostic radionuclides 131I and 177Lu. The specific absorption rate (SAR) procured for poly-L-lysine functionalized magnetic nanoparticles (SAR values of 99.7 W/g at H0 = 15.9 kA/m and resonant frequency of 252 kHz) demonstrated their possible application in magnetic hyperthermia. Poly-L-lysine functionalized magnetic nanoparticles labeled with 177Lu showed the highest radiochemical purity (>99.00 %) and in vitro stability in saline and serum (>98.00 % up to 96 h). The in vivo analysis performed after their intravenous administration in healthy Wistar rats presented good in vivo stability for several days. Encouraging results as well as magnetic and radiochemical properties of 177Lu–PLL-MNPs (80 °C) justify their further testing toward the potential use as theranostic agents for diagnostic and combined radionuclide-hyperthermia therapeutic applications.

AB - Iron oxide nanoparticles (IONP) with different distinctive morphologies (spherical, cubic, flower-like and needles) were utilized for modification of screen-printed carbon electrodes (SPCE) to be used for synthetic organic dye degradation by an electrochemical approach. This platform was implemented for removal of the synthetic organic dye, Reactive Black 5 (RB5) in aqueous solution. Modified SPCE with spherically shaped IONP (IONS) had the highest dye removal efficiency. Thus, IONS were then used for surface decoration of the most common carbon-based materials (graphene, graphene oxide, carboxylated graphene, graphene nanoribbons, graphene nanoplatelets, single- and multi-wall carbon nanotubes), and the nanocomposites formed were deposited on the electrode surfaces. Using IONS/graphene composite (IONS@GN) for electrode modification resulted in the best effect. Removal of RB5 with this electrode was 51% better in comparison with bare SPCE, reducing the time required for complete dye degradation from 61 to 30 min Using IONS-modified SPCE, total RB5 removal occurred in 51 min, improving the performance by 16% over that of bare SPCE. The effects determined, i.e., the best IONP morphology and best type of carbon-based material for nanocomposite formation to enhance RB5 removal will provide guidelines for further modifications of SPCE with nanomaterials and nanocomposites, for application of this electrochemical approach in the degradation of organic pollutants. © 2020 The Author(s). AB - An electrochemical sensor is described for the determination of L-dopa (levodopa; 3,4-dihydroxyphenylalanine). An inkjet-printed carbon nanotube (IJPCNT) electrode was modified with manganese dioxide microspheres by drop-casting. They coating was characterized by field emission scanning electron microscopy, Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy and X-ray powder diffraction. The sensor, best operated at a working voltage of 0.3 V, has a linear response in the 0.1 to 10 μM L-dopa concentration range, a 54 nM detection limit, excellent reproducibility, repeatability and selectivity. The amperometric approach was applied to the determination of L-dopa in spiked biological fluids and displayed satisfactory accuracy and precision. AB - Microstructure and magnetic properties of nanoparticles can be tailored by optimising the synthesis procedure and changing chemical composition. In this study, a two-step procedure, i.e., coprecipitation in the presence of PEG 300 followed by microwave assisted (MW) hydrothermal synthesis, was introduced to obtain CoxFe3-xO4(x = 0, 0.1 and 0.2) nanoparticles. It was found that with the increase of Co content, particle/crystallite size increased, with significant change of coercivity (Hc). The mixed samples of CoxFe3-xO4(x = 0.1 and 0.2) were magnetically harder in comparison with Fe3O4. Тhe Hcof Fe3O4was 91 Oe, while for Co0.10Fe2.90O4and Co0.20Fe2.80O4, Hcwas 256 Oe and 1070 Oe, respectively. Saturation magnetisation (Ms) of mixed samples also increased up to 6% compared to Fe3O4. A special effort was devoted to study the effects of introducing different surfactants (PEG 300, PEG 4000 or SDS) during the synthesis procedure in order to improve morphological and microstructural properties of CoFe2O4nanoparticles. The influence of surfactants on physical/chemical properties of nanoparticles is discussed.

AB - In this work facile one step synthesis of magnesium ferrite (MgFe2O4) nanoparticles decorated on reduced graphene oxide (MgFe@RGO) using a microwave assisted hydrothermal procedure is reported. The synthesized material was characterized with help of several techniques and applied for the modification of glassy carbon electrode. Such prepared electrode was utilized for successive simultaneous detection of structurally similar compounds, 1,2- and 1,4-dihydroxibenzenes (catechol (CC) and hydroquinone (HQ)), using differential pulse voltammetry technique. It was found that oxidation current increases linearly with the concentrations of both investigated compounds. Detection limits for both species are ≤0.31 μM. The best analytical response in the presence of both CC and HQ, taking into account peak shape and peak current, was obtained at pH 5.6 utilizing acetate buffer solution. The often-presented species in the surface waters as well as gallic acid and caffeine do not interfere with determination of CC and HQ, while ascorbic acid shows high interference. The method is successfully applied for detection of catechol and hydroquinone in real samples analyses. © 2018 Wiley-VCH Verlag GmbH & Co. KGaA, Weinheim

AB - A disposable glucose biosensor was prepared using nanoparticles of MnO2 decorated on graphene nanoribbons by surface modification with drop coating with the GOx and Nafion®. Tested material was synthesized and characterized using several techniques. The biosensor could be operated under physiological conditions (0.1 M phosphate buffer, pH 7.4) and exhibited good reproducibility and stability. The linear range for the amperometric response of the biosensor at operating potential of +0.50 (versus Ag/AgCl) was from 0.1 to 1.4 mmol/l, with a detection limit of 0.05 mmol/l and high sensitivity of 56.32 μA/mmol cm2. Developed method was tested toward glucose quantification in real samples with satisfactory accuracy and precision.

AB - In the present paper, the electrochemical behavior and the properties of two modified glassy carbon (GC) electrodes used for quantification of gallic acid in sweet wines were compared. A comparative study was conducted between titanium nitride- or wolfram carbide-doped reduced graphene oxide, labeled as TNrGO and WCrGO, respectively, modified GC electrodes, which are promising composite nanomaterials for electroanalytical applications. For the first time, WCrGO was synthesized and its electroanalytical properties compared with those of TNrGO. Results showed that the proposed materials exhibited enhanced characteristics, e.g., low limits of detection (1.1 mu M and 3.1 mu M for TNrGO and WCrGO, respectively), wide linear ranges (for TNrGO 4.5-76 mu M and for WCrGO 10-100 mu M), low adsorption, and low background current, which make them promising candidates for electrochemical sensing applications.

AB - Various mixed Fe-Ga oxides were prepared by the calcination of mixed Fe-Ga oxyhydroxide precursors (alpha-Fe1 xGaxOOH solid solutions, 0 LT = x LT = 1) at 500 or 1000 degrees C. Isostructural corundum-type oxides alpha-Fe2O3 and alpha-Ga2O3, as well as their solid solutions alpha-Fe-2 xGaxO3 in the entire concentration range (x = 0, 0.4, 1, 1.6 and 2) were prepared by calcination at 500 degrees C. An increase in the Ga content in alpha-Fe2 xGaxO3 resulted in a reduction of the unit cell size, a weakened hyperfine magnetic field, a disappearance of the Morin transition, an increase of magnetization at low temperatures, a shift in the position of IR bands to higher wavenumbers, and a lower intensity of absorption bands in the UV-Vis-NIR spectra. The calcination of Fe-Ga oxyhydroxides at 1000 degrees C resulted in the formation of a rhombohedral alpha-Fe-2 xGaxO3 phase for x = 0 and 0.4. An orthorhombic GaFeO3 phase with Fe3+ cations located in 3 different octahedral sites was obtained by the calcination at 1000 degrees C of mixed Fe-Ga oxyhydroxide with the Fe:Ga ratio of 1:1. A monoclinic phase b-Fe-2 xGaxO3 (x = 1.6 and 2) was obtained by the calcination at 1000 degrees C of Fe-Ga oxyhydroxides with 80 and 100 mol% Ga. The monoclinic beta-Ga1.6Fe0.4O3 showed two strong luminescence peaks in the blue region of the PL spectrum. (C) 2015 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

AB - A series of nanostructured fluorite-type Ce1-xYxO2-delta(0 LT = x LT = 0.35) solid solutions, prepared via high-energy milling of the CeO2/Y2O3 mixtures, are investigated by XRD, HR-TEM, EDS and Raman spectroscopy. For the first time, complementary information on both the long-range and short-range structural features of mechanosynthesized Ce1-xYxO2-delta, obtained by Rietveld analysis of XRD data and Raman spectroscopy, is provided. The lattice parameters of the as-prepared solid solutions decrease with increasing yttrium content. Rietveld refinements of the XRD data reveal increase in microstrains in the host ceria lattice as a consequence of yttrium incorporation. Raman spectra are directly affected by the presence of oxygen vacancies; their existence is evidenced by the presence of vibration modes at similar to 560 and similar to 600 cm(-1). The detailed spectroscopic investigations enable us to separate extrinsic and intrinsic origin of oxygen vacancies. It is demonstrated that mechanosynthesis can be successfully employed in the one-step preparation of nanocrystalline Ce1-xYxO2-delta solid solutions. (C) 2015 Elsevier Inc. All rights reserved.

The following correlations of crystallite size with physical parameters were found: (a) lattice parameter decreases with the increase in size and it reaches value for bulk counterpart approximately for crystallites bigger than 7 nm, (b) ac electrical resistivity at room temperature increases with the increase in crystallite size, (c) for crystallites of similar to 7 nm or smaller electrical resistivity have maximum value at 50 degrees C, (d) the real part of permittivity at selected frequency generally decreases with the increase in crystallite size and (e) magnetization increases with the increase in crystallite size. Deviation of stoichiometry, cation polyvalence, and cation redistribution with annealing are the main factors that influence physical properties of Nickel ferrite nanoparticles. AB - Herein a comparative study of five nanocrystalline cerium oxides (CeO2-delta) synthesised by different methods and calcined at 500 degrees C is reported. XRPD analysis showed that stoichiometry parameter delta, crystallite size/strain and lattice constant were only slightly affected by the method utilized. All ceria nanoparticles are nearly spherical in shape with faceted morphology, free of defects and with a relatively uniform size distribution. The average microstrain was found to be approximately 10 times higher than that of bulk counterpart. The absorption edge of nanocrystalline materials was shifted towards a higher wavelengths (red shift) in comparison with bulk counterpart, and band gap values were in the range 2.7-3.24 eV (3.33 eV for bulk counterpart).

The absorption edge of nanocrystalline materials was shifted towards a higher wavelengths (red shift) in comparison with bulk counterpart, and band gap values were in the range 2.7-3.24 eV (3.33 eV for bulk counterpart).",

AB - The 5-10 nnn Ce1-XEuXO2-delta (0 LT = x LT = 0.30) nanoparticles with fluorite structure were synthesized by thermal decomposition of Eu- and Ce-2,4-pentanedione complexes mixtures. X-ray line broadening analysis of mixed samples Ce1-XEuXO2-delta (0.05 LT = x LT = 0.30) showed that the crystallite size was lower and root mean square strain higher than in pure ceria. However, within mixed samples Ce1-XEuXO2-delta (0.05 LT = x LT = 0.30) crystallite size and root mean square strain were independent of Eu3+ concentration. Raman spectroscopy results indicated that europium ions yield disorder by breaking the phonon propagation and therefore making the non-centre Brillouin zone modes Raman active. The absorption bands in the spectra of mixed oxides were blue-shifted in comparison to pure CeO2-delta nanopowder. The samples show red emission typical for Eu ions. The biggest photoluminescent intensity was observed for the highest Eu3+ concentration (x = 0.30) and further enhanced with the increase in crystallinity.
