AB - In this work, comparative analysis of processes in carbon arc and radio frequency (RF) plasma during fullerene synthesis has been presented. The kinetic model of fullerene formation developed earlier has been verified in both types of plasma reactors. The fullerene yield depended on carbon concentration, velocity of plasma flame and rotational temperature of C(2) radicals predominantly. When mean rotational temperature of C(2) radicals was 3000 K, the fullerene yield was the highest regardless of the type of used reactor. The zone of fullerene formation is larger significantly in RF plasma reactor compared to arc reactor.

AB - Synthesis of fullerenes from graphite powders of different grade was studied in a radiofrequency (RF) plasma reactor. Dependence of fullerene yield on the properties and feed rate of precursors and on the helium content of plasma gas was studied in details. The fullerene yield was influenced by the mean size and the thermal conductivity of graphite particles on the one hand, and the helium content of the gas phase on the other. Soot containing fullerene mixture of 5.9% was produced in best conditions found in this work. The main component of the fullerene mixture was C-60. In addition, it contained about 30% of C-70 (corresponding to a C-60/C-70 mass ratio of 2.64). Higher fullerenes such as C-84 were also detected by mass spectroscopy (MS) and high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC).

AB - This paper presents results on fullerene formation during the processing of different graphite powders in an RF thermal plasma reactor. Graphite powders of different particle size and purity were fed into the reactor (Aldrich, KS4). Optical emission spectroscopy of atomic and molecular species is used as a diagnostic tool of the RF plasma flame. It was found that rotational and vibrational temperatures of C-2 radicals depend on the feed rate of the precursor used. The volumes of RF plasma flame during processing of graphite powders have been calculated. By analysing scanning electron microscopy micrographs of soot, the evaporation rate of the precursors used has been evaluated as well. Based on the obtained values of volumes of plasma flame and evaporation rate of starting powders, the concentration of C-2 radicals has been calculated.
