AB - We report the results of ion irradiation influence on rare earth sesquioxides structure, which are materials of practical importance as a radiation resistant ceramics in nuclear applications. Y2O3, Gd2O3 and Er2O3 sesquioxides in the pellet form were irradiated by oxygen ions (O2+) beam with the energy of 30 keV and implantation fluence of 5 x 10(20) m (2). Samples are characterized by Grazing Incidence X-ray Diffraction (GIXRD), Raman spectroscopy and atomic force microscopy (AFM). By GIXRD it was found partial transformation from cubic (C) to monoclinic (B) phase only in Gd2O3, induced by O2+ irradiation. This was confirmed by Raman spectroscopy. Although full phase transition from C to B phase in Y2O3 was not observed, the splitting and broadening of the main intensity Raman band for C phase could be explained by the stress and the disorder induced by the quenching. Analysis done by AFM showed changes in surface topology, i.e. values of average roughness (Ra) and root mean squared roughness (RMS) were significantly changed after irradiation for all samples. RMSs in Y2O3 before and after irradiation were 35 nm and 26 nm, respectively. (C) 2009 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

AB - Titanate and zirconate samples from perovskite and pyrochlore families have been submitted to low energy heavy ion irradiation in order to pre-damage their crystalline structure. Samples irradiated below or near their amorphisation threshold were then leached in deionised water at 90 degrees C in static mode while samples irradiated above their amorphisation threshold were leached at 100 degrees C in dynamic mode. Below the amorphisation threshold, only slight effects of the pre-irradiation have been found on the chemical durability of titanate and zirconate from the perovskite family. Above the amorphisation threshold, perovskite surfaces exhibit a stronger hydration and an increase of the growth kinetics of secondary phases identified as TiOOH and ZrOOH compounds mainly. The pre-irradiated pyrochlore (Nd(2)Zr(2)O(7)) exhibits both a higher hydration degree and a higher Nd-Zr surface co-enrichment due to the destabilization of their network by the pre-irradiation. AB - In this work, the results of structural modification of fullerene thin films bombarded by multiple charged nitrogen ions have been reported. The properties of as-deposited and irraditated fullerene thin films have been investigated by Raman and FTIR spectroscopy and AFM analysis. After irradiation by multiple charged nitrogen ions (N(2+), N(5+)) new bondings in fullerene films have been formed and the amorphicity has been enhanced at higher doses. Raman and FTIR spectra showed structural changes of deposited films depending on the energy and implantation dose. AFM analysis showed that the ion beam had destroyed the surface ordering. At lower doses the surface order has been characterized by carbon clusters of 500 nm. At higher doses significantly smaller clusters have been formed (200 nm).

AB - In this paper, results of structural modification of fullerene thin films by single and multiple charged boron ions (B+, B3+) are presented. The applied ion energies were in the range of 15-45 keV. The characterization of as-deposited and irradiated specimens has been performed by atomic force microscopy, Raman and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy and UV/vis spectrophotometry. The results of Raman analysis have shown the formation of amorphous layer after irradiation of fullerene thin films. Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy has confirmed the formation of new B-C bonds in irradiated films at higher fluences (2 x 10(16) cm(-2)). The morphology of bombarded films has been changed significantly. The optical band gap was found to be reduced from 1.7 to 1.06 eV for irradiated films by B3+ ions and 0.7 eV for irradiated films by B+ ions. (c) 2006 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

AB - We have used the well known metal-ions-from-volatile-compounds (MIVOC) method at the mVINIS Ion Source to produce the multiply charged ion beams form solid substances. Based on this method the very intense and stable multiply charged ion beams of several solid substances having the high melting points were extracted. The ion yields and the spectra of multiply charged ion beams obtained from solid materials like Fe and Hf will be presented. We have utilized the multiply charged ion beams from solid substances to irradiate the polymers, fullerenes and glassy carbon at the low energy channel for modification of materials.

AB - In this paper, the results of structural modification of fullerene thin films bombarded by highly charged iron ions (Fe6+) are presented. The properties of as-deposited and irradiated fullerene thin films have been investigated by Raman spectroscopy, UV/Vis spectrophotometry and atomic force microscopy (AFM). The results of Raman spectroscopy have indicated structural changes of irradiated thin films depending on fluences. It was found that iron doped fullerene films are dominated by sp(3) rather than sp(2) after bombardment which might be due to formation of nanodiamond structures. AFM analysis showed that the ion beam had destroyed the surface ordering. The optical band gap was found to be in the range of 0.6 to 1.4 eV for irradiated films by Fe6+ ions at the highest fluences.

AB - In order to determine position, dimensions and intensities of multiply charged ion beams at the mVINIS Ion Source, a novel method was developed based on a fluorescent screen and a commercial digital TV camera. The spatial characteristics of multiply charged ion beams (for example the ionization states of Ar (2+) to Ar10+) have been precisely measured and analyzed at the TESLA Accelerator Installation for the first time. In this work, we discuss in details the characteristics of Ar (8+) ion beams. The obtained ion beam characteristics were compared with the results of previously applied conventional methods of ion beam diagnostics.

abstract = "In order to determine position, dimensions and intensities of multiply charged ion beams at the mVINIS Ion Source, a novel method was developed based on a fluorescent screen and a commercial digital TV camera. The obtained ion beam characteristics were compared with the results of previously applied conventional methods of ion beam diagnostics.",
