AB - Lagrangian formulation of quantum mechanical Schrodinger equation is developed in general and illustrated in the eigenbasis of the Hamiltonian and in the coordinate representation. The Lagrangian formulation of physically plausible quantum system results in a well defined second order equation on a real vector space. The Klein-Gordon equation for a real field is shown to be the Lagrangian form of the corresponding Schrodinger equation.

AB - Positive operator valued measures representing phase observables for systems with arbitrary discrete, possibly degenerate, spectra are constructed. The general construction is presented and discussed using illustrative examples. The phase POVM shows intricate discontinuous dependence on the eigenfrequencies. Special discussion is devoted to the systems with degenerate energy spectrum, in which case the phase observable is nonunique. We present arguments that can be used to reduces this nonuniqueness.

AB - Properties of an operator representing the dynamical time in the extended parameterization invariant formulation of quantum mechanics are studied. It is shown that this time operator is given by a positive operator measure analogously to the quantities that are known to represent various measurable time operators. The relation between the dynamical time of the extended formulation and the best known example of the system time operator, i.e., for the free one-dimensional particle, is obtained.

AB - It is demonstrated that the important common property of operators representing various observable times in quantum mechanics, namely the fact that such an operator is always given by a nonorthogonal resolution of unity, can be obtained from a constraint on the possible physical events, i.e. on the extended space of the Hamiltonian formulation of the parametric dynamics. Operators which could generate meaningful probability distributions for various time measurements are suggested. Copyright (C) EPLA, 2012

We show that such a direct approach applied to non-entire functions ln (a) over cap and ln (a) over cap (dagger), present in the literature, may lead to errors and contradictions. We elucidate their roots and propose a way to avoid them. We discuss the obtained results.

AB - The Chandrasekhars H functions play a central role in theoretical descriptions of radiative transfer in planetary and stellar atmospheres. In the present work our aim is to obtain in a simple way new analytic approximations of the Chandrasekhars function for isotropic scattering, which would be sufficiently simple but more accurate than the existing approximations. We apply the mean value theorem for definite integrals in the nonlinear integral equation for the Chandrasekhars H function. In this way the integral equation is formally solved but the solution depends on a new unknown parameter. We determine this parameter approximately, from the condition that the obtained H function matches the zero-order moment of the H function, which is known exactly, as accurately as possible in the whole range of the single particle albedo. The result gives our first analytic approximation for the H function. Using it as a starting approximation in the corresponding integral equation, after only one iteration which may be performed analytically, we obtain our second analytic approximation. The maximum relative error of our first analytic. approximation, which is very simple in structure, is below 2.5%. The accuracy of our second approximation is within 0.07%, so that it highly surpasses the accuracy of the other analytic approximations available in the literature. (c) 2007 Elsevier Inc. AB - A Monte Carlo-based program for treatment of photon transport, restricted to photon energies used in medical diagnostics, is developed. Only the photoabsorption and Compton scattering of photons are taken into account, a justifiable assumption for the energies involved. We can simply separate contributions of reflection events with one, two, three, or more successive collisions of X-rays with electrons of the target. This gives us insights and information about photon transport which otherwise would be inaccessible. (c) 2006 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

AB - The reflection of x-rays from a semi-infinite water target, for energies ranging from 10 to 60 keV, often used in x-ray diagnostics, is investigated by Monte Carlo simulation. The same process was also treated analytically as the classical albedo problem for isotropic scattering without energy loss. Good agreement of results for the angular distribution of reflected photons of the two approaches is obtained for higher photon energies from the energy range considered. Multiple collision scattering dominates at higher energies, leading to isotropization of the photon distribution. Discrepancies between the isotropic scattering model and Monte Carlo results appear at the lower part of the energy range. Monte Carlo results show that at these energies photon reflection is governed mainly by single collisions and that these discrepancies are caused by anisotropy of the distribution of single backscattered photons. It is shown that the inclusion of the anisotropy of single Compton backscattering in the analytical model greatly improves the agreement with Monte Carlo results.

AB - The reflection of x-rays from a half space is studied within the framework of a model that assumes multiple isotropic scattering of photons without energy loss. An exactly solvable analytical expression for the angular distribution of reflected photons is derived. The range of validity of the model was determined by the Monte Carlo simulation thereby incorporating energy loss and angular dependences. For water as a scatterer, in the energy range from 10 to 60 keV, which is often used in x-ray diagnostics, the two approaches differ by at most 5%. The analytic results, confirmed by the Monte Carlo simulation, show that the angular distribution of reflected photons for energies greater than 30 keV-where multiple scattering events dominate-may be represented by a cosine law, within a few per cent of accuracy.

AB - Starting from a complete but not overcomplete set of coherent states defined on a lattice in the phase space, we construct the orthonormal basis using the procedure due to Lodwin, in which all states to be normalized enter the procedure on equal footing. We show that our normalized states may be interpreted as eigenstates of the operator of simultaneous unsharp measurement of coordinate and momentum. In a sense we followed the classical idea of von Neumann but without drawbacks which in his construction of such an operator were due to the use of the Gram-Schmidt orthonormalization procedure which is somewhat inappropriate for this purpose. We discuss the obtained results.

It is shown that at these energies, with high accuracy, the X-ray transport and reflection may be treated as a classical monoenergetic particle transport with isotropic scattering. This situation allows the analytical treatment, what may have practical implications.

AB - Recently a physically transparent definition of classical-like states of a quantum one-dimensional particle in a potential has been proposed [D. M. Davidovic and D. Lalovic, J. Phys. A. 31, 2281 (1998)]; such states have been explicitly constructed and studied. In the present paper we formulated an analogous definition of the classical-like states of a quantum system with no underlying classical model, namely the spin s = 1/2. The definition leads to a natural and consistent measure of the classical characteristics of a quantum state. We then constructed such classical-like states explicitly, and discussed their properties. [S1050-2947(99)06606-8].
