AB - A novel porous gold polymer composite was prepared by the functionalization of a glycidyl methacrylate-based copolymer (pGME) with ethylene diamine (pGME-en), and activation by gold (pGME-en/Au), in a simple batch adsorption procedure in an acid solution, at room temperature. Detailed characterization of the pGME-en before and after activation was performed. The main focuses of this research were the design of a method that can enable the recovery of gold and the reuse of this multipurpose sorbent as an antimicrobial agent. Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) analysis pointed out amine groups as the primary binding sites for Au activation, while hydroxyl groups also contributed to the chelation reaction. pGME-en exhibited fast gold adsorption with an adsorption half-time of 5 min and an equilibrium time of 30 min. The maximal adsorption capacity was about 187 mg/g. The analysis of sorption experimental data with a non-linear surface reaction and diffusion-based kinetic models revealed the pseudo-second-order and Avrami model as the best fit, with unambiguous control by liquid film and intra-particle diffusion. The biological activity studies against Staphylococcus aureus, Listeria monocytogenes, Escherichia coli, and Candida albicans revealed moderate activity of pGME-en/Au against different bacterial and fungal species. pGME-en/Au was stable in a saline solution, with a release of approximately 2.3 mg/g after 24 h.

AB - The subject of this study were electrochemical characteristics of transition metal oxide electrodes, consisting specifically of ZrO2 and TiO2, which have different crystallographic structure and lattice parameters. Metal oxides are a significant class of materials which have found vast applications in electrocatalysis. Composites of diverse semiconductors typically display much enhanced electronic conductivity and decreased charge transfer resistance. The goal of this study was to hopefully prepare and investigate electrodes with improved properties, through combination of heterostructures of chemically and structurally dissimilar and wide-bandgap semiconductors. Electroactive surface area was determined by employing cyclic voltammetry peak current method.

AB - A dispersive solid-phase microextraction (DSPME) sorbent consisting of poly(1,6-hexanedi-ol diacrylate)-based polymer microspheres, with embedded graphene microparticles (poly(HDDA)/g-raphene), was synthesized by microfluidic emulsification/photopolymerization and characterized by optical microscopy and X-ray fluorescence spectrometry. This sorbent was applied for simple, fast, and sensitive vortex-assisted DSPME of rare earth elements (RREs) in coal fly ash (CFA) leachate, prior to their quantification by inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS). Among nine DSPME variables, the Plackett–Burman screening design (PBD), followed by the central composite optimization design (CCD) using the Derringer desirability function (D), identified the eluent type as the most influencing DSPME variable. The optimum conditions with maximum D (0.65) for the chelating agent di-(2-ethylhexyl) phosphoric acid (D2EHPA) amount, the sorbent amount, the eluting solvent, the extraction temperature, the centrifuge speed, the vortexing time, the elution time, the centrifugation time, and pH, were set to 60 µL, 30 mg, 2 M HNO3, 25◦ C, 6000 rpm, 1 min, 1 min, 5 min, and 4.2, respectively. Analytical validation of the DSPME method for 16 REEs (Sc, Y, La, Ce, Pr, Nd, Sm, Eu, Gd, Tb, Dy, Ho, Er, Tm, Yb, Lu) in CFA leachate samples estimated the detection limits at the low ppt level, the recovery range 43–112%, and relative standard deviation within ± 22%. This method was applied to a water extraction procedure (EP) and acetic acid toxicity characteristic leaching procedure (TCLP) for leachate of CFA, from five different coal-fired thermoelectric power plants. The most abundant REEs in leachate (20 ÷ 1 solid-to-liquid ratio) are Ce, Y, and La, which were found in the range of 22–194 ng/L, 35–105 ng/L, 48–95 ng/L, and 9.6–51 µg/L, 7.3–22 µg/L, 2.4–17 µg/L, for EP and TCLP leachate, respectively. The least present REE in TCLP leachate was Lu (42–125 ng/L), which was not detected in EP leachate.

AB - Selective separation of CO2 is a field of intensive research due to emerging emissions from fire coaled and natural gas power plants. In the focus of development efforts is a design of regenerable CO2 capture material where adsorption technologies and advanced solid adsorbents are again in the centre of interest. Short screening of composite zeolite/activated carbon material in the terms of its selectivity for CO2 towards water is presented in this research. Adsorption rate of CO2 and H2O is determined and analysed at two different temperatures and equilibrium pressure of 3.5 kPa which corresponds to flue gases contents. The results imply the water should be removed from treated gas before CO2 separation and capture. Design of advanced materials can be facilitated by implementation of DFT calculations. A preview of DFT analysed materials with higher affinity for CO2 than for water adsorption is presented within this research. It underscores the possibility of defining future strategies for the design of novel carbon dioxide capture materials more resistant to water compared to currently used zeolites.

AB - Benzophenone - 3 is a well - known molecular UV filter, main- ly found in commercial cosmetic preparation for sunscreen and skincare. Due t o increased use of sunscreens, it could be found in surface water and wastewater, which could affect the water quality and human health. Research indicates that benzophenone - 3 act as endocrine disruptor and has a carcinogen- ic and mutagenic effect on humans and other living organisms. As such, poses a health risk to all living beings and need to be removed from the environment. Electrochemical techniques for wastewater treatment of organic pollutants show advantages over commercial techniques as practicality , safety, and simple application on both, small and large systems. Aim of the presented research is to examine the possibility of using titanium anode plates for electrochemical degradation of benzophenone - 3 in 0.05M aqueous sodium chloride solution. Elect rolysis was performed in galvanostatic mode at a current density of 25 mA cm - 2 . During 40 minutes of electrolysis, the degradation efficiency of benzo- phenone - 3 is 98.3 %. Additional studies of process kinetics show that degrada- tion of benzophenone - 3 follow s first - order kinetics.

abstract = "Benzophenone - 3 is a well - known molecular UV filter, main- ly found in commercial cosmetic preparation for sunscreen and skincare. AB - Ovo istraživanje sprovedeno je u Bokokotorskom zalivu radi procene kvaliteta površinskog sedimenata, a time i stanja morske sredine.
AB - This study was carried out in the Bay of Boka Kotor in order to assess the surface sediment
quality and thereby to evaluate the status of the marine environment. The method of
elementary analysis, ED-XRF was used to determine the content of elements and oxides in
surface sediments sampled at 12 stations in 2019. Multivariate statistical methods, such as
principal component analysis (PCA) and cluster analysis (CA) were used to analyse the data
in order to obtain a comprehensive distribution of the examined elements according to
locations in the bay, and their origin, as well as similarities/differences of samples in chemical
composition.

AB - Soil samples from the site of the former largest paint and varnish factory in ex-Yugoslavia were analyzed for arsenic and eight heavy metals (Pb, Cd, Zn, Cr, Ni, Cu, Fe, and Hg). Several additional soil properties (pH, sulfur, nitrogen, phosphorus, and water content) were also measured. Multivariate analysis showed strong correlations between Pb and Zn; and a moderate correlation between Cu and Ni. There was no correlation between heavy metals and any of the analyzed soil properties parameters. A factor analysis grouped most heavy metals, except Cd, which showed different behavior, and Fe and As, which associated with soil properties. The soil samples were clustered into two distinctive groups. Positive matrix factorization receptor modeling clearly identified Zn and Pb as belonging to the traffic vehicle factor. The second factor dominating arsenic was industrial chemical emissions, while the third factor containing most of the heavy metals was attributed to natural background variation. The last non-metallic factor, dominated by sulfur, was the result of past activities in the paint facility. The average enrichment factor values were for the metals analyzed were: 0.73; 0.71; 2.4; 0.58; 2.3; 0.87; 1.6; and 0.76; for Cr, Cd, Pb, Ni, Zn, Cu, As, and Hg, respectively. Only moderate soil enrichment by Pb and Zn was found. The geoaccumulation index values showed a moderately polluted soil with Pb and Zn, but most contributing to the ecological risk were Cd with 63% and Hg with 19%. These two metals are of major concern in this case study due to their high toxicity, even though they are present at very low concentrations. Generally, a moderate ecological risk was estimated for most soil samples, except for a small number of high-risk samples. Spatial distribution mapped three severely polluted sub-areas. In general, the paint and varnish industry moderately contributes to the contamination of soil. The main ecological risk from metal contamination is not related to the paint technological production process itself, but from other activities at the site that deposit of heavy metals into the soil.

AB - The presented study describes macroporous crosslinked poly(glycidyl methacrylate-co-ethylene glycol dimethacrylate) [PGME] functionalized with diethylenetriamine [PGME-deta] as a potential recovery agent for Mo(VI) oxyanions from aqueous solutions. Sorption studies were carried out by varying experimental conditions (pH, time, concentration, temperature). Kinetics of Mo(VI) sorption was investigated in batch (static) experiments, in the temperature range 298–343 K. Sorption dynamics data were fitted to seven chemical-reaction and particle-diffusion models. The kinetics studies showed that Mo(VI) sorption adhered to the pseudo-second-order model under all investigated operating conditions. The sorption kinetics was determined to be governed by both the intraparticle diffusion and the external film diffusion to a lesser extent. The temperature rise promotes the molybdate species removal, with the maximum experimental uptake capacity of 4.02 mmol g− 1 at 298 K, at the selected pH which is consistent with the predominance range of hydrolized polynuclear Mo(VI) forms and optimum electrostatic attraction.

AB - The adsorption properties of two zeolite types, faujasite (NaY, ZnY, CoY) and LTA-4A zeolite (NaA, ZnA, CoA), towards technetium were studied in batch static experiments. The Si/Al ratio, acidity, dealumination, chargebalance cations of zeolite, contact time and temperature determined the adsorption efficiency. The maximum removal efficiency of 98.8% and Kdvalue (2.06 × 10−4 cm3 g−1) was achieved using CoY (zeolite type Y). The kinetics of technetium adsorption followed the pseudo-second order model. The TcO2adsorption is mainly due to the hydrogen bonds between protons of the zeolitic structural OH groups (Bronsted acid center) and oxygen from the TcO2−.

AB - In this study, macroporous poly(glycidyl methacrylate-co-ethylene glycol dimethacrylate) was synthesized by suspension copolymerization, functionalized by ring-opening reaction of the pendant epoxy groups with diethylene triamine and used for immobilization of Pd(II) ions from chloride and nitrate solutions under batch experimental condition. The amino-functionalized sample and samples with immobilized Pd(II) ions were characterized by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) analysis and scanning energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (SEM-EDX). The electrochemical behavior of electrodes composed of synthesized samples was tested in 0.1 M H2SO4 by means of cyclic voltammetry (CV). The shape of recorded CV showed dependence on the type of Pd-salt used for Pd immobilization. The reaction of oxidation of 4-chlorophenol (4-CP) from 0.1 M H2SO4 at investigated samples was also studied. Electrooxidation of 4-CP resulted in passivation and formation of reversible hydroquinone/benzoquinone on both investigated electrodes, although hydroquinone/benzoquinone formation was more pronounced on Pd immobilized from nitrite solution. AB - A novel magnetic macroporous poly(glycidyl methacrylate-co-ethylene glycol dimethacrylate) (mPGME) was prepared by suspension copolymerization and functionalized with diethylenetriamine (mPGME-deta). The samples were characterized by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) analysis, mercury porosimetry, scanning electron microscopy with energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (SEM-EDS), atomic force microscopy (AFM) and SQUID magnetometry. The sorption behavior of mPGME-deta toward pertechnetate ions (TcO4-) from aqueous solution was studied. Experimental results indicated relatively fast TcO4- sorption kinetics that depends on pH and ionic strength, with a high removal efficiency of 99% within 180 min in the pH range 3.0-5.0. The pseudo-second-order model yielded the best fit for the kinetic data.

AB - Cilj ove doktorske disertacije je bio ispitivanje uticaja stepena umreženja imakroporoznosti na strukturne karakteristike i termička svojstva neporoznih imakroporoznih metakrilatnih homopolimera i kopolimera sintetizovanih suspenzionom(ko)polimerizacijom. Pored toga u disertaciji je ispitivana mogućnost primenekopolimera glicidilmetakrilata (GMA) i etilenglikoldimetakrilata (EGDMA) sarazličitim udelom umreživača funkcionalizovanih dietilentriaminom (skraćenoPGME-deta) za uklanjanje oksianjona teških metala i radionuklida Cr(VI), 99Tc(VII),Re(VII) i Mo(VI) iz vodenih sistema. Šaržnom metodom pri nekompetitivnim uslovimaje ispitan uticaj nekoliko ključnih faktora na kapacitet i kinetiku sorpcije u ovimsistemima: vremena kontakta, početne koncentracije metala u rastvoru, pH rastvora, temperature i parametara porozne strukture kopolimera.Polimeri su okarakterisani fizičkohemijskim metodama: mikroanalizom, skenirajućom elektronskom mikroskopijom sa energetski disperzivnomspektroskopijom x-zraka (SEM/EDS) i transmisionom elektronskom mikroskopijom(TEM), infracrvenom spektroskopijom (FTIR-ATR), živinom porozimetrijom, adsorpciono–desorpcionim izotermama N2 na 77 K i termijskom analizom (TG/DSC) samasenom spektrometrijom (MS).Rezultati dobijeni ispitivanjem sorpcije Cr(VI), 99Tc(VII), Re(VII) i Mo(VI) izvodenih rastvora na amino-funkcionalizovanim kopolimerima u laboratorijskimuslovima bili su osnova za proučavanje kinetičkih reakcionih i difuzionih modela, adsorpcionih izotermi i termodinamike sorpcije, da bi se dobio uvid u mehanizamprocesa i ocenila efikasnost ovih sorbenasa.
AB - The goal of this doctoral dissertation was to investigate the influence ofcrosslinking extent and macroporosity on structural characteristics and thermalproperties of nonporous and macroporous methacrylate-based homopolymers andcopolymers synthesized by suspension (co)polymerization. Also, the possibleapplication of the copolymers of glycidyl methacrylate (GMA) and ethylene glycoldimethacrylate (EGDMA) with different crosslinker content functionalized withdiethylene triamine (abbreviated PGME-deta) was investigated for the removal of heavymetal and radionuclide oxyanions Cr(VI), 99Tc(VII), Re(VII) and Mo(VI) from aqueoussystems. The influence of several key characteristics on sorption capacity and kinetics:contact time, initial metal concentration in the solution, solution pH, temperature andparameters of porous structure, was investigated using batch method undernoncompetitive conditions.Polymers were characterized using physicochemical methods: microanalysis, scanning electron microscopy with energy-dispersive x-ray spectroscopy (SEM/EDS)and transmission electron microscopy (TEM), infrared spectroscopy (FTIR-ATR),mercury porosimetry, N2 adsorption‒desorption isotherms at 77 K and thermal analysis(TG/DSC) with mass spectrometry (MS).The obtained results of Cr(VI), 99Tc(VII), Re(VII) and Mo(VI) sorption fromaqueous solutions on the amino-functionalized copolymers in laboratory conditionswere the base of the analysis of the surface reaction-based and pore diffusion-basedkinetic models, adsorption isotherms and thermodynamics of sorption, in order to gaininsight into the mechanism of the process and evaluate the efficiency of these sorbents.

AB - Synthesis of an unconventional resin based on 4-vinylpyridine (4-VP) and its Cu(II) sorption behavior were studied. Three samples of macroporous crosslinked poly(4-vinylpyridine-co-ethylene glycol dimethacrylate) (P4VPE) with different porosity parameters were prepared by suspension copolymerization by varying the n-heptane amount in the inert component. The samples were characterized by mercury porosimetry, elemental analysis and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). The sorption of P4VPE for Cu(II) ions, determined under non-competitive conditions, was relatively rapid, i.e., the maximum capacity was reached within 30 min. The maximum experimental sorption capacity for the sample with the highest values of pore diameter and specific pore volume (sample 3, Q(eq) = 89 mg g(-1)) was 17.5 times higher than for the sample with the lowest values of pore diameter and specific pore volume (sample 1, Q(eq) = 5.1 mg g(-1)). Since the values for pyridine content in all P4VPE samples were almost the same, it was concluded that the porosity parameters have predominant influence on Cu(II) sorption rates on P4VPE. The sorption behavior and the rate-controlling mechanisms were analyzed using six kinetic models (pseudo-first order, pseudo-second order, Elovich, intraparticle diffusion, Bangham and Boyd models). XPS study clarified the nature of the formed P4VPE-Cu(II) species.

AB - Novel macroporous functionalized copolymers with different cross-linker concentrations and porosity parameters were synthesized by reaction of the pendant epoxy groups of poly(glycidyl methacrylate-co-ethylene glycol dimethacrylate) (poly(GMA-co-EGDMA)) with hexamethylene diamine 1,3-bis(3-aminopropyl)tetramethyldisiloxane, and alpha,omega-diaminopropyl poly(dimethylsiloxane). The copolymers were prepared in forms, of spherical beads and characterized by Fourier transform infrared (FTIR); C-13 and Si-29 solid-state NMR, mercury porosimetry, differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Copolymers prepared with the higher cross-linker concentrations have better thermal stability, higher glass transition temperatures; higher specific surface areas, and smaller pore diameters that correspond to half Of the pore volumes. Out results show that functionalization significantly changed porosity parameters, mechanism of thermal degradation; and increased thermal, stability in comparison with the initial copolymers. These macroporous copolymers could potentially have many applications, i.e. for sorption of heavy and precious metals or as Material for gas chromatography columns.

AB - Sorption of radioactive 99Tc-pertechnetate onto activated carbon prepared
from pinecones was investigated. The parameters of contact time and Tc-99
concentration were varied. It was established that the sorption half-life, t1/2,
was very short ~ 2.2 min, thus making this sorbent an excellent candidate
for immediate pollution remediation, which is very important in the case of
nuclear accidents. The kinetic data were found to follow closely the pseudosecond-
order (PSO) kinetic model. Boyd model established the sorption
dependence only on film diffusion. The partitioning/distribution coefficient,
Kd, attained was 2729 cm3 g-1. The equilibration time was 3 h at room
temperature (T=298 K).

AB - In this paper, macroporous glycidyl methacrylate and ethylene glycol dimethacrylate copolymer functionalized with diethylene triamine (PGME-deta), was evaluated as Reactive Black 5 (RB5) sorbent. Batch RB5 removal from aqueous solution by PGME-deta was investigated by varying pH, contact time, sorbent dosage, initial dye concentration and temperature. The sorption is pH sensitive having maximum at pH 2 (dye removal of 85%), decreasing with the increase of pH (dye removal of 24% at pH 11) after 60 min. Sorption kinetics was fitted to chemical-reaction and particle-diffusion models (pseudo-first-, pseudo-second-order, intraparticle diffusion and Mckay models). The pseudo-second-order kinetic model accurately predicted the RB5 amount sorbed under all investigated operating conditions, while the intraparticle diffusion was the dominant rate-limiting mechanism. The diffusion mechanism was more prevalent with the decrease in temperature and the increase in concentration. The isotherm data was best fitted with the Langmuir model, indicating homogeneous distribution of active sites on PGME-deta and monolayer sorption, with the maximum sorption capacity of 353 mg g(-1). The calculated sorption rates improved with increasing temperature and an activation energy close to 40 kj mol(-1) was determined, suggesting that chemisorption was also rate-controlling.

abstract = "In this paper, macroporous glycidyl methacrylate and ethylene glycol dimethacrylate copolymer functionalized with diethylene triamine (PGME-deta), was evaluated as Reactive Black 5 (RB5) sorbent. The calculated sorption rates improved with increasing temperature and an activation energy close to 40 kj mol(-1) was determined, suggesting that chemisorption was also rate-controlling.",

AB - (99)Technetium is one of the largest components of nuclear waste material. In aqueous solutions Tc-99 is present as the pertechnetate oxoanion, (TcO4-)-Tc-99, which is highly soluble and mobile in groundwater under oxidizing conditions, thus posing a major environmental concern. In this study, a series of organo-modified bentonite clay samples was tested as adsorbents for the removal of radioactive (TcO4-)-Tc-99 from aqueous solution at room temperature. The influence of the hexadecyl trimethylammonium (HDTMA)/bentonite ratio on the adsorption ability of the organobentonites was investigated. It was found that the adsorbent in which the exchangeable cations were only partially substituted with HDTMA showed very low affinity toward pertechnetate. On the other hand, the adsorbents in which the HDTMA loading exceeded the cation exchange capacity (CEC) value had high efficiency. The behavior of such adsorbents was best described by a Freundlich isotherm, while for the sample in which the HDTMA loading was equal to the CEC, the linear adsorption isotherm was the most appropriate. The difference in adsorption performance of several adsorbents was discussed from the point of view of the interlayer arrangement of the HDTMA. The kinetics of pertechnetate adsorption on HDTMA-bentonites was tested and analyzed using different surface reaction- and diffusion-based kinetic models. For all the investigated adsorbents, the most appropriate kinetic model was the pseudo-second-order kinetics model. The obtained adsorption capacities were and HDTMA-bentonites with HDTMA loadings exceeding CEC value should be regarded as very promising adsorbents for the remediation of Tc-99 polluted waters.
