AB  - The nature of dark matter and properties of neutrinos are among the most pressing issues in contemporary particle physics. The dual-phase xenon time-projection chamber is the leading technology to cover the available parameter space for weakly interacting massive particles, while featuring extensive sensitivity to many alternative dark matter candidates. These detectors can also study neutrinos through neutrinoless double-beta decay and through a variety of astrophysical sources. A next-generation xenon-based detector will therefore be a true multi-purpose observatory to significantly advance particle physics, nuclear physics, astrophysics, solar physics, and cosmology. This review article presents the science cases for such a detector.

AB  - Modern methods of theoretical and experimental materials engineering can be greatly facilitated by reliably established guiding trends that set directions for a smart search for new materials with enhanced performance. Those trends can be derived from a thorough analysis of large arrays of the experimental data, obtained both experimentally and theoretically. In the present paper, the structural, elastic, and electronic properties of 30 spinel compounds AB 2 X 4 (A = Be, Mg, Ca, Sr, Ba; B = Al, Ga, In; X = O, S) were investigated using the CRYSTAL14 program. For the first time the lattice constants, bulk moduli, band gaps and density of states for these 30 spinels were systematically calculated and analyzed. Influence of the cation and anion variation on the above-mentioned properties was highlighted. Several relations between lattice constants, bulk modulus and ionic radii, electronegativities of constituting ions were found. Several linear equations are proposed, which provide a convenient way to predict the lattice constants and bulk moduli of isostructural spinels. © 2019

AB  - We investigate the band structure of BaBiO3, an insulating parent compound of doped high-T-c superconductors, using in situ angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy on thin films. The data compare favorably overall with density functional theory calculations within the local density approximation, demonstrating that electron correlations are weak. The bands exhibit Brillouin zone folding consistent with known BiO6 breathing distortions. Though the distortions are often thought to coincide with Bi3+/Bi5+ charge ordering, core level spectra show that bismuth is monovalent. We further demonstrate that the bands closest to the Fermi level are primarily oxygen derived, while the bismuth 6s states mostly contribute to dispersive bands at deeper binding energy. The results support a model of Bi-O charge transfer in which hole pairs are localized on combinations of the O 2p orbitals.

AB  - Rare earths, especially Dy or Tm doped CaSO4 phosphors are actively studied. They have high sensitivity, a large dynamic range, thermal stability and ease of preparation. Nevertheless, they can be enhanced by inclusion of lithium and this study reports some effects of lithium co-dopant on the TL and radioluminescence (RL) emissions of two TL phosphors. Addition of Li as a co-dopant ion was made either during chemical preparation of the phosphors, or as a binder component mixed with the basic phosphors matrix during the process of pressing and sintering the TLD pellets.
