AB - A promising method for removal of Cs ions from water and their incorporation into stable crystal structure ready for safe and permanent disposal was described. Cs-exchanged X zeolite was hot-pressed at temperature ranging from 800 to 950 °C to fabricate dense pollucite ceramics. It was found that the application of external pressure reduced the pollucite formation temperature. The effect of sintering temperature on density, phase composition and mechanical properties was investigated. The highest density of 92.5 %TD and the highest compressive strength of 79 MPa were measured in pollucite hot-pressed at 950 °C for 3 h. Heterogeneity of samples obtained at 950 °C was determined using scanning electron microscopy. The pollucite hot-pressed at 950 °C had low linear thermal expansion coefficient of ∼4.67 × 10−6 K−1 in the temperature range from 100 to 1000 °C. © 2019

AB - The influence of different milling conditions obtained using two high-energy mills on hydrogen desorption from MgH2-WO3 composites was investigated. The morphology, particle and crystallite size were studied as a function of milling speed, vial's volume, and ball-to-powder ratio. The vial's fill level, the number, and type of milling balls and additive's content kept constant. Changes in morphology and microstructure were correlated to desorption properties of materials. Higher milling speed reduced particle size but, there is no significant crystallite size reduction. On the other hand, additive distribution is similar regardless of the energy input. It has been noticed that different energy input on milling blend, which is the result of combined effects of above-mentioned factors, reflects on desorption temperature but not on the kinetics of desorption. In fact, desorption mechanism changes from 2D to 3D growth with constant nucleation rate, despite obtained changes in microstructure or chemical composition of the material. © 2019 Hydrogen Energy Publications LLC

AB - Magnesium hydride, as hydrogen storage material, meets the requirements such as high gravimetric hydrogen capacity (7,6 wt%), low cost and weight, abundance and H2 absorption/desorption cycling possibility. Given that the oxide additives show the good impact on desorption properties, mechanical milling of MgH2 with addition of 5, 10 and 15% wt. WO3 was performed. The microstructure and morphology of composites were analysed by XRD, PSD and SEM and correlated to hydrogen desorption properties which have been investigated by DSC. The results have shown that WO3 has a positive effect on the desorption kinetics as well as on the change of the desorption mechanism.

AB - Cesium aluminosilicate phases are of the great interest as possible host for Cs immobilization in radioactive waste management. The possibility to use zeolite as a host material for radioactive Cs immobilization was investigated. Cs-exchanged forms of clinoptilolite and 13X which were prepared by ion-exchange treatment were compacted. The powders compacts of exchanged zeolites were thermally treated at 1200 °C. The XRD analysis showed that Cs was successfully immobilized after heat treatment by formation of stable cesium-aluminosilicate ceramic forms. Thermal and mechanical properties of the sintered samples were investigated. From the perspective of these characteristics, Cs-exchanged zeolite (clinoptilolite and 13 X) can be considered as a potential material for safe waste disposal.

AB - Perovskite-related materials with the general formula AC3B4O12 have great technological significance due to their specific physical properties. The crystal structure of AC3B4O12 compounds is cubic with Im3 symmetry. Different cations can occupy A and B sites, while the C site is commonly occupied by Cu2+ or Mn3+ ions. It has been found that the nature of B cation changes the physical properties of the material. In our previous studies we dealt with CaCu3Ti4O12 (CCTO) and CaCu3Ru4O12 (CCRO) compounds. CCTO has the gigantic permittivity of 104105 in the kilohertz region and good stability over the temperature range from -170 to 330 °C. While Ti-compound is semiconductor, the Ru one is conductive oxide and could be used as interfaces between CCTO and metallic electrodes. Thus, CCTO and CCRO have potential application for preparation of layer capacitors with CCRO as the electrode and CCTO as the dielectric material. Since the oxygen vacancies and/or intrinsic defects in perovskites have a crucial role in the physical properties it is important to determine crystal structure of ceramic materials. In this work, a detailed structural investigation of CCTO and CCRO perovskites was performed. The powders were prepared by precipitation and successive calcination at 1100 °C with 3 h dwell time to obtained single phased materials. The phase composition and crystal structure of synthesized powders were studied by X-ray powder diffraction (XRD), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), high-resolution TEM (HRTEM), selected-area electron diffraction (SAED) and Raman spectroscopy analyses. Rietveld refinement of XRD data was used to calculate the powders stoichiometry. Furthermore, since the XRD method is not adequate for determination of oxygen atoms due to their small scattering factors, to confirm the (oxygen-) stoichiometry of the ceramic powders, thermogravimetric (TG) measurements were employed. Two sets of experiments were performed; powders were heated in a flowing: (1) air atmosphere, and (2) reducing atmosphere (mixture of 5% H2 with Ar; 20 ml/min), to 1100 °C with a heating rate 10 °C/min with 3 h dwell time. TG measurements were performed on system coupled to a quadrupole mass spectrometer used for determination of volatile compounds. The weight losses measured by TG, in two different atmospheres, were compared; minor deviations in stoichiometries of CaCu3B4O12 compounds determined by Rietveld refinement were corrected.

abstract = "Perovskite-related materials with the general formula AC3B4O12 have great technological significance due to their specific physical properties. The weight losses measured by TG, in two different atmospheres, were compared; minor deviations in stoichiometries of CaCu3B4O12 compounds determined by Rietveld refinement were corrected.",

AB - We report unusual sintering behavior of Ca-deficient hydroxyapatite processed with different heating rates; particularly, faster heating resulted in higher densification. We hypothesize that faster heating delays formation of β-tricalcium phosphate which yields to unobstructed densification in intermediate sintering stage, allowing further tailoring of both microstructure and phase composition (hydroxyapatite/tricalcium phosphate).

AB - Improving of material characteristics could be achieved in different ways, but it is always connected with the issue of impairing the other functional properties. Hydroxyapatite bioceramics lacks of insufficient mechanical properties for load-bearing implant applications. Nowadays, making of composites, nanostructuring and doping of basic material are some of the promising pathways for hydroxyapatite toughening. Until now, Zr is not considered as fortifying dopant in hydroxyapatite based materials. However, it could be interesting in the sense of nontoxicity, preserved biocompatibility and incorporation in hydroxyapatite crystal lattice since it possesses lower crystalographic radius. In this study, preliminary experiments of chemical precipitation are performed to obtain hydroxyapatite with various Zr content. The crystal phase composition, particle size and morphology changes compared to pure hydroxyapatite are studied. Sintering is performed to find appropriate conditions for fabrication of dense material. Vickers hardness and fracture toughness were also measured.

AB - Phase composition, crystal structure and morphology of biological hydroxyapatite (BHAp) extracted from human mandible bone, and carbonated hydroxyapatite (CHAp), synthesized by the chemical precipitation method, were studied by x-ray powder diffraction (XRD), Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) and Raman (R) spectroscopy techniques, combined with transmission electron microscopy (TEM). Structural and microstructural parameters were determined through Rietveld refinement of recorded XRD data, performed using the FullProf computing program, and TEM. Microstructural analysis shows anisotropic extension along the [0 0 l] crystallographic direction (i.e. elongated crystallites shape) of both investigated samples. The average crystallite sizes of 10 and 8 nm were estimated for BHAp and CHAp, respectively. The FTIR and R spectroscopy studies show that carbonate ions substitute both phosphate and hydroxyl ions in the crystal structure of BHAp as well as in CHAp, indicating that both of them are mixed AB-type of CHAp. The thermal behaviour and carbonate content were analysed using thermogravimetric and differential thermal analysis. The carbonate content of about 1 wt.% and phase transition, at near 790 °C, from HAp to β-tricalcium phosphate were determined in both samples. The quality of synthesized CHAp powder, particularly, the particle size distribution and uniformity of morphology, was analysed by a particle size analyser based on laser diffraction and field emission scanning electron microscopy, respectively. These data were used to discuss similarity between natural and synthetic CHAp. Good correlation between the unit cell parameters, average crystallite size, morphology, carbonate content and crystallographic positions of carbonate ions in natural and synthetic HAp samples was found.

abstract = "Phase composition, crystal structure and morphology of biological hydroxyapatite (BHAp) extracted from human mandible bone, and carbonated hydroxyapatite (CHAp), synthesized by the chemical precipitation method, were studied by x-ray powder diffraction (XRD), Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) and Raman (R) spectroscopy techniques, combined with transmission electron microscopy (TEM). Good correlation between the unit cell parameters, average crystallite size, morphology, carbonate content and crystallographic positions of carbonate ions in natural and synthetic HAp samples was found.",
