AB  - Cobalt molybdate is of importantce for the development of mobile telecommunication systems, such as mobile phones and high-quality microwave dielectric ceramics for high resonant frequency selectivity in microwave devices. Due to their special catalytic properties, cobalt molybdates have been used as catalysts in many chemical and petrochemical processes. The CoMoO4 nanoparticles ware synthetized in a simple, quick, and inexpensive way, by using a glycine nitrate procedure (GNP), with and without calcination at 450 °C [1], and investigated by applying the Briggs-Rauscher oscillatory reaction method [2]. The complex oscillatory BR reaction is sensitive to different insoluble analyte addition [3]. This feature of BR oscillatory reaction is used to investigate effect of different masses of GNP synthetized (with and without calcination at 450 °C) CoMoO4 samples on oscillatory dynamics. These two samples give the complete different effects in BR reaction. Obtained results strongly suggest that BR oscillatory reaction could be used for distinguishing these two samples, opening new direction in the investigation of ceramics materials.

QSAR and machine learning models of redox potentials of some organic pigments

AB  - The organic pigments offer promising opportunities for developing new sustainable electrode materials for lithium batteries. Some of them have been identified as cathode material with very encouraging reversible lithium ion storage characteristics. One of them is a naturally occurring purpurin extracted from the Madder plant (Rubia tinctorum) for which we confirmed this good electrochemical behavior by cyclic voltammetry. One of the strategies towards obtaining materials with even better characteristics is a structural modification of already existing pigments. Building a theoretical model that could predict the redox properties of these new compounds can be very useful towards achieving that goal. In order to build a 3D QSAR (quantitative structure–activity relationship) model for material redox potential prediction, 9 organic pigments with known redox potentials were extracted from the literature. Based on molecular interaction field (MIF) probes we calculated standard GRIND (grid-independent) descriptors and constructed following principal PLS (partial least squares) model. By validation with the literature data, but also with the obtained experimental data for purpurin, this model proved very reliable in predicting the redox potential. A comparison was also made with the machine learning model that was formed in parallel.

Indigo Carmine in a Food Dye: Spectroscopic Characterization and Determining Its Micro-Concentration through the Clock Reaction

AB  - Indigo carmine is a commonly used industrial blue dye. To determine its concentration in a commercially available food dye composed of a mixture of indigo carmine and D-glucose, this paper characterizes it through (ATR, KBr) FTIR micro-Raman as well as UV/Vis and clock: Briggs–Rauscher (BR) oscillatory reaction methods. The indigo carmine was detected in the bulk food dye only by applying micro-Raman spectroscopy, indicating a low percentage of the indigo carmine present. This research provides an improvement in the deviations from the experimental Raman spectrum as calculated by the B97D/cc-pVTZ level of theory one, resulting in a better geometrical optimization of the indigo carmine molecule compared to data within the literature. The analytical curves used to determine indigo carmine concentrations (and quantities) in an aqueous solution of food dye were applied by means of UV/Vis and BR methods. BR yielded significantly better analytical parameters: 100 times lower LOD and LOQ compared to commonly used UV/Vis. The remarkable sensitivity of the BR reaction towards indigo carmine suggests that not only does indigo carmine react in an oscillatory reaction but also its decomposition products, meaning that the multiple oxidation reactions have an important role in the BR’s indigo carmine mechanism. The novelty of this research is the investigation of indigo carmine using a clock BR reaction, opening new possibilities to determine indigo carmine in other complex samples (pharmaceutical, food, etc.).

AB  - The calcium phosphate tungsten bronze (Ca-PWB) has been synthesized and characterized (TGA, DSC, XRPD, FTIR, SEM). The influence of solid insoluble materials Ca-PWB, as well as lithium doped (Li-PWB) and cation free phosphate tungsten (PWB) bronzes on the oscillatory Briggs-Rauscher (BR) reaction dynamics, is compared. The results show that doping with Li and Ca reduces sensitivity of the BR reaction towards bronzes addition. These findings suggest the usage of the BR reaction as an innovative method for testing of different properties of bronze material. The behavior of PWB in the BR reaction is significantly changed with divalent cation (Ca2+) doping. The reasons for the different bronzes behavior were found in their calculated unit cell volumes. Namely, the compressed Ca-PWB unit cell volume indicates the difficult availability of the active site for heterogeneous catalysis. Hence, the linear correlation (slope) of the BR oscillogram’s length (τosc) vs. mass of bronze in BR reaction might be considered as a new parameter for the evaluation of the bronzes catalytic activity.

The Comparison of Heavy Metal Content of Sardina Pilchardus Species Collected from Bay and Open Adriatic Sea

AB  - Over the last few decades, heavy metal pollution has become an issue of great interest, primarily because of the potential human health risks. Contamination of seawater with heavy metals, and thus of marine species, is a direct consequence of urban and industrial pollution. Therefore, two fish samples Sardina pilchardus (S. pilchardus) collected from the Boka Kotorska Bay and the coastal part of the open sea on the Montenegrin coast were compared in terms of heavy metals: lead, mercury, copper and zinc concentration. Results show that metal concentrations in S. pilchardus samples in both sampling areas were lower than the maximum permitted concentrations defined by national and European legislation in fisheries and fish muscle tissue, meaning S. pilchardus obtained from the Boka Kotorska Bay and the coastal part of the open Adriatic Sea safe for human nutrition.

Therefore, two fish samples Sardina pilchardus (S. pilchardus) collected from the Boka Kotorska Bay and the coastal part of the open sea on the Montenegrin coast were compared in terms of heavy metals: lead, mercury, copper and zinc concentration. Results show that metal concentrations in S. pilchardus samples in both sampling areas were lower than the maximum permitted concentrations defined by national and European legislation in fisheries and fish muscle tissue, meaning S. pilchardus obtained from the Boka Kotorska Bay and the coastal part of the open Adriatic Sea safe for human nutrition.",

AB  - The aim of this research was to obtain a carbon solid residue by the carbonization process of biomass in an inert atmosphere which, through physical activation and chemical treatment (using TEOS - tetraethyl orthosilicate) would allow creation of highly porous and spatially distinct ordered bio-SiC ceramics. The results of carbonization experiments at several operating temperatures and activation of carbons with multiple-cycle treatments TEOS clearly showed the possibility of obtaining SiC nano-structures, after performing the carbothermal reduction at 1400 °C. The increase in the activation temperature and the duration time starts the development of the SiC particles inside the porous structure. The XRPD analysis showed that the major SiC polytype has cubic SiC (β-SiC) structure and remainder is hexagonal SiC polytypic (α-SiC) structure. It was established that the carbons obtained from carbonization of the Platanus orientalis L. plane tree fruit (PTF) precursor and activated at 850 °C with longer holding times (1 and 2 h) exhibit β-SiC (cubic) nano-wires. A possible nano-wires increment mechanism was suggested. The obtained results represent significant contribution in understanding the process as well as the main characteristics of SiC nano-materials and their possible applications.

AB  - In this work, plane tree seed-based activated carbons were characterized in detail for a variety of applications. The particularly important area of application would be in the artificial photosynthesis. After carbonization process of biomass precursor at 650°C, the resulting preliminary activated carbons were activated at various temperatures. The activated carbons were characterized by oxygen functionalities (a particularly important role has ester oxygen groups) which provide a unique microstructure. The chemical compositions of as-prepared activated carbons were analyzed through Fourier transform infrared and Raman spectra as well as gas chromatography–mass spectroscopy analysis, while morphology was observed by scanning electron microscopy analysis. Applied analysis showed that detected graphite mainly becomes uniformly nanocrystalline system. The current study also explored the applicability of carbon material obtained from plane tree seed as a potential gaseous adsorbent. The characterization showed that the tested material contains both mesopores and micropores, and this should be advantageous for the gas sorption process, since mesopores may provide low-resistant pathways for the diffusion of CO 2 molecules, while the micropores are the most suitable for trapping of CO 2 . The sorption process analysis (including adsorption/desorption isotherms behavior) shows indication that the rate-limiting step of CO 2 adsorption onto activated carbon is probably governed by diffusion-controlled process, especially at temperatures below 850°C.

AB  - Potential non-toxic pink and red ceramic pigments based on CeO2 were successfully synthesized by self-propagating room temperature method and thermally treated at 600, 900 and 1200 °C for 15 min. The structure, morphology and optical properties, as well as thermal stability of Ce1-xErxO2-δ and Ce1-xPrxO2-δ (x = 0.05) were examined. Single-phase composition of all obtained CeO2 pigments was confirmed using XRPD method and Raman spectroscopy and it was not dependent on temperature. The mechanism of structural behaviour was thoroughly examined using Raman and FTIR spectroscopy. Nanometric dimensions of the crystallites of all pigments were confirmed using XRPD, TEM and FE-SEM analysis. Colour properties were dependent on the temperature treatment, and their position in the chromaticity diagram was studied using UV/VIS spectrophotometry. Colour efficiency measurements were supplemented by colorimetric analysis. It is proved that all samples are thermally stable in the investigated temperature range (up to 1200 °C), and their potential application as environmentally friendly pigments of desired colour is confirmed.

AB  - Polyphenols present in different plant cell organelles increase the resistance of plants to various types of environmental stresses. We investigated the possibility of increasing the content of bioactive compounds in the seed of yellow soybean variety Laura. The soybean was treated during vegetation with five products based on plant extracts, on the assumption of enrichment of plants with various nutrients. Soybean flour extracts were screened spectrophotometrically for total phenolic content and antioxidant activity. The antioxidant activity was evaluated using three methods. The content of phenolic acids was determined by HPLC, and the raw protein content was estimated by the Kjeldahl method. Depending on the treatment, variations in the quantity of individual phenolic acids with up to 90% higher concentration as compared to the control were observed. Controlled usage of certain plant extracts can increase the concentration of the target group of bioactive compounds in the samples. The synergistic effect of proteins and phenolic compounds on the antioxidant activity of extracts was detected. The results of this study are not only important from the aspect of plant resistance to various types of stress, but also when considering soybean as a functional food. © 2019 by the Serbian Biological Society.

Therefore, evaluation of water quality from coal-fired power plants is essential to both environmental protection and protection of the human health. In this paper the concentrations of metals (K, Sr, and Pb) and corresponding radionuclides (K-40, Sr-90, and Pb-210) for 22 water samples in the vicinity of five coal-fired power plants in Serbia were determined. The total metal concentrations were measured using an atomic absorption spectrometer. The activities of radionuclides K-40 and Pb-210 were determined by gamma spectrometry using HPGe detector, while the activity of Sr-90 was determined by radiochemical analytical method and measured using low-level gas proportional counter. The water pollution status was assessed by the prospective method that is defined in this study. The preliminary results indicated that operation of the coal-fired power plants has no significant impact on the surrounding environment with regard to the radiological characteristics and content of metals of the investigated waters that can be used for suitable in future applications.

AB  - In the presented paper, activated carbons were prepared from fructose and glucose, and activating agents (KOH, NaOH, LiOH) by hydrothermal treatment (HTC) treatment. After preparation, samples were characterized in details. Different techniques were used: x-ray powder diffraction analysis, Raman spectral analysis, elemental analysis, and determination of textural and morphological properties. Obtained results showed dependence of investigated properties and the nature of precursors (glucose or fructose) as well as the type of hydroxides used as activating agents. After characterization, samples were tested as materials for heavy metals (Pb2+, Cd2+and Zn2+) and methylene blue removal. Also, adsorption experiments were performed on wastewaters taken from tailings of the lead and zinc mine and kinetic of the methylene blue removal was studied. The factors which distinguished the KOH activated samples were high yield (~14%), content of organic carbon (63–74%), porosity and specific surface area (SBET~700–1360 m2/g), a low degree of the crystal phase, indications that potassium ions may be included in heavy metals removal, good removal of the heavy metal ions (~47–59 mg/g for Pb2+, ~21–27 mg/g for Cd2+and ~6–10 mg/g for Zn2+) and fast (~10–30 min) and good methylene blue (~60–200 mg/g) removal.

The obtained samples were tested for potential application in dyes removal from water solutions.
AB  - У представљеном раду испитани су утицај температуре, концентрације полазног материјала и различитих хидроксида на својства активираних угљеничних материјала добијених из сахарозе. Узорци су припремљени хидротермалним третманом и активирани помоћу KOH, NaOH и LiOH. Две различите концентрације воденог раствора сахарозе (0,5 1,0 mol/dm3) и три температуре (160, 200, 240 ºC) су примењене у хидротермалном третману. Процеси активације су изведени на 750 ºC у атмосфери азота. Узорци су карактерисани рендгендском дифрактометријском анализом, елементарном анализом, адсорпционо-десорпционим мерењем азота, инфрацрвеном спектрометријом са Фуријеовом трансформацијом, скенирајућом електронском микроскопијом и термијском анализом. AB  - The Briggs-Rauscher reaction containing malonic acid may undergo a sudden transition from low (state I) to high iodide and iodine (state concentration states after a well-defined and strongly reproducible oscillatory period. This study clearly shows that even though the time-dependent behavior of the oscillatory state is reproducible, the time lag necessary for the appearance of the state I to state II transition after the system leaves the oscillatory state becomes irreproducible for an individual kinetic run. This crazy clock behavior of the state I to state II transition is identified by repeated experiments in which stirring rate is taken as a control parameter and all other parameters such as initial conditions, temperature, vessel surface, and the age of solution were kept constant. Surprisingly, a better stirring condition does not make the transition reproducible; it simply does not allow the transition to happen at all. The proposed mechanism, additional explanations, and proposals for this irreproducibility of state II been presented. Considering the fact that the number of crazy clock reactions is only a few, this study may contribute to a better understanding of fundaments of this phenomenon.

AB  - In this work, plane tree seed-based activated carbons (AC) were used for possible application in carbon dioxide capture and storage (CCS) technology. After carbonization process at 850 degrees C, resulting preliminary ACs were activated at various temperatures. The high levels of the growth in basal planes of graphite structure in carbonized sample were detected. Also, it was found that the samples activated at 750 and 850 degrees C have a lower graphitization degree and contained substantially disordered sections and defects, which are characteristic of typical amorphous porous carbons. Process modeling has shown that the CO2 sorption can be described by multi-parametric continuous distributed reactivity model. Analysis showed the occurrence of gas reduction process, involving gibberellic acid and coenzymes which can produce the methane gas. The highly ordered arrangement of the gas molecules on the carbons was assumed. (C) 2017 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

AB  - This paper provides findings from the study of total content of sodium (Na)
macro-element in environmental water samples around five of the largest
coal-fired power plants in the region. Also, pH value of these waters was
examined. The concentration of Na was determined by Atomic absorption
spectrometry (AAS). The obtained results for the concentration of Na were
found to be in range between 8.9 and 61.6 mg/L. In general, the obtained
values for Na content were below the recommended maximum permissible
limit for drinking water given in the Serbian regulation on the quality of water
for human use, as well as European Union (EU) directive and directive of
World Health Organization (WHO).

Studies on Structural and Morphological Properties of Multidoped Ceria Ce0.8Nd0.0025Sm0.0025Gd0.005Dy0.095Y0.095O2-delta (x=0.2) as Solid Solutions

AB  - The nanopowdery solid solutions of multidoped ceria Ce0.8Nd0.0025Sm0.0025Gd0.005Dy0.095Y0.095O2 (delta) (x = 0.2) with the fluorite type crystal structure of CeO2 were synthesized for the first time. Two synthesis procedures were applied: the modified glycine-nitrate procedure (MGNP method) and room temperature self-propagating reaction (SPRT method). All nanopowders were characterized by XRPD analysis, Raman spectroscopy, low temperature nitrogen physisorption, TEM, and SEM methods. According to the XRPD and Raman spectroscopy results, single phase solid solutions of fluorite structure were evidenced regardless of the number of dopants and synthesis procedure. Both XRPD and TEM were analyses evidenced nanometer particle dimensions. The SPRT method results in obtaining sample with higher specific surface area, smaller crystallite and particles sizes, and the same values of the lattice parameter in comparison to pure CeO2. Raman spectroscopy was confirmed to the oxygen vacancies introduced into the ceria lattice when Ce4+ ions were replaced with cations (dopants) of lower valence state (3+), which may indicate the potential improvement of ionic conductivity. Additionally, the presence of oxygen vacancies in the lattice ceria, as well as very developed grain boundaries, gives a new possibility for potential application of obtained nanopowders in the area of room temperature ferromagnetism as spintronics.
