AB - Modified porous alumo-silicate ceramics, alloyed with magnesium and microalloyed with aluminum, belongs to modern multifunctional ceramic materials. Microalloying has led to important changes in dielectric and electrical properties of ceramics, such as dielectric constant and electrical resistance. These changes are conditioned by the microstructural properties of modified porous ceramics. The obtained results have shown the unity of the influence of composition, structure, morphology and application of microalloyed multifunctional alumosilicate ceramics on electrophysical properties. Microstructural investigations have shown that this type of ceramics has an amorphous-crystal structure, which causes important changes in its electrical properties and affects its activity. Therefore the ceramics can be considered as an active dielectric. A correlation between microstructural properties and structurally sensitive, i.e. electrophysical properties of microalloyed multifunctional alumo-silicate ceramics, was confirmed.

AB - The physicochemical modification of peat through thermal and oxidation processes was carried out, in order to obtain new, inexpensive and active material for purification of different types of waters. During the modification, surface chemical compounds of Shilov type were formed. Batch adsorption properties and suitability of physicochemically modified peat (PCMP) for odor removal were tested in aqueous solutions of H2S and colloidal sulphur. Additionally, PCMP was tested in the removal of As(V) which is hazardous ingredient in contaminated waters. Possible mechanisms of pollutants binding include interactions, which lead to formation of adducts and clathrates. All these processes are elucidated in detail. The results showed that the obtained material can be used for the removal of sulphide, colloidal sulphur and As(V) from different types of waters.

AB - Pollution control and water purification are the main concerns associated with hazardous component eliminations from wastewaters which have inspired the research, among the others, on various clay minerals as useful adsorbents. The aim of this study was to examine morphological, structural, adsorption, and electrochemical characteristics of serpentinite in order to check its potential for removal of cadmium and textile dyes from synthetic waters. SEM technique has provided a detailed insight into the surface morphology of serpentinite indicating irregularly shaped particles and lamellar aggregates which are characteristic of lizardite mineral. Crystal phases detected in composition of serpentinite by using XRD technique are lizardite and tiny amount of periclase. Serpentinite adsorption characteristics were investigated towards Cd2+ and anionic textile dyes (Procion red MX-5B, Procion orange and Ramazol black) in aqueous solutions. The main goal of the study was the reliable removal of hazardous Cd2+ at low initial concentrations (up to 200 mu g/dm(3)). Textile dyes were taken as the models of anionic organic pollutants in water. All the adsorption experiments were carried out in batch conditions by varying initial parameters such as concentration of pollutant, contact time, mass of adsorbent and pH. Based on the obtained results, serpentinite has proven to be efficient adsorbent with removal efficiency over 98% for the selected pollutants. Native serpentinite was further modified in order to obtain forsterite. Electrochemical characteristics of serpentinite and forsterite were examined by using cyclic voltammetry of solution of 0.1 M H2SO4 as acidic supporting electrolyte and K-4[Fe(CN)(6)] which was chosen as a redox model compound. Due to its specific structure, surface groups, morphology, and non-stoichiometric composition, serpentinite and forsterite exhibited prominent electrocatalytic activity. (C) 2016 Elsevier B.V. AB - Samples of natural peat (NP) were hydrothermally treated at different temperatures in oxidative and acidic aqueous medium to tailor their acid-base, adsorption, morphological and other properties. The obtained materials were thoroughly characterized by SEM, XRD and FTIR techniques, followed by determination of pH(pzc), examination of adsorption characteristics and the extent of organic matter leaching in water. Acid-base characteristics of these materials were examined by potentiometric and conductometric titration of corresponding aqueous suspensions. Experimental potentiometric data were interpreted using ProtoFit software (NEM, non-electrostatic model) which provided pKa values and concentrations of surface sites which are compared with corresponding values obtained by conductometric titration method. There are two main types of surface groups (carboxylic and phenolic) that are dominant in the materials and determine their acid-base behavior in the aqueous medium. Temperature during oxidative hydrothermal treatment has no significant effect on the total number of surface groups, but influences the ratio of carboxylic and phenol-type groups. Hence, acid-base properties of peat can be tailored, which is useful in designing and improving adsorptive characteristics of peat for the preferential removal of certain pollutants from water.

AB - Microalloyed and alloyed aluminium-silicate ceramics represents multiphase and multifunctional solid-solid system. The microstructure of aluminium-silicate ceramics matrix is arranged with favorable relationship between crystallinity and amorphousness. Numbered physical processes and interactions take place in very complex intergranular and interphase areas, making new boundaries and regions with fractal nature. Fractal nature of grains contours, macro, mezzo and micro pores and nanostructure phases at grain boundaries make this ceramics an active dielectric material. The synergistic effect of additives, dislocations and impurities leads to dislocations movement at grain boundaries and fragmentation of existing grains in a large number of micrograins with distinct fractal nature. Hence, permanent change of micromorphology occurs in intergranular area. Fractal analysis of intergranular microstructure has included application of Minkowski layer, correlated with fractal dimension. It represents convex layer of grains contour roughness and irregularity, determined in accordance with grain contours fractality. The introduction of fractal microstructure analysis allows better interpretation of many physical and physico-chemical processes, bearing in mind that Minkowski layer defines grains contact probability. AB - An application of coatings composed of mixed (hydr)oxides over bentonite particles in aqueous suspension, in narrow range of pH, has been proven as a useful method for obtaining bentonite based composite with a developed, specific surface area and pronounced adsorption features toward cationic pollutants. This paper deals with detailed characterization of structure as well as textural and adsorption properties of bentonite based composite. The structure of the composite was examined by using XRD technique providing results that confirm changes in orientation of layered quasi-crystalline particles of montmorillonite, which is the most common component of bentonite clay. Surface area and pore volumes were determined by N-2 adsorption at -196 degrees C using BET, t-plot, alpha(s)-plot, Dubinin Radushkevich and Dolli-more Heal method. The results have revealed that the specific surface area for composite is about two times higher than for starting bentonite. Moreover, modification of bentonite leads to significant changes in the meso- and microporosity. Adsorption properties of the composite were studied by analyzing the adsorption of dye methylene blue which was used in this study as a model of cationic pollutant in water. The most prominent role in the mechanism of dye molecules retention on the surface, interlayers and in the pores of the adsorbent is ascribed to establishing of electrostatic, van der Waals and hydrogen bonds. The shape of adsorption isotherm indicates that methylene blue can be adsorbed onto composite in more than one layer. (C) 2014 Elsevier Inc. All rights reserved.

AB - Carbon cryogel (CC) has been prepared through sol gel polycondensation of resorcinol with formaldehyde in basic aqueous solution followed by freeze-drying and carbonization. Porous properties of CC analyzed by gravimetric McBain method confirmed the expected surface area and degree of mesoporosity. Obtained powdered material was used for the removal of pesticide imidacloprid from aqueous solutions under regular batch adsorption procedure. A set of several isotherm models including Langmuir, Freundlich, Temkin, Dubinin-Radushkevich, Brouers-Sotolongo, Redlich-Peterson, Sips, Toth, Jovanovic, Hurkins-Jura, Halsey and Radke-Prausnitz model was used for nonlinear fitting of equilibrium data. Several models fitted with quite high correlation coefficients. Bangham and Elovich model fitted suitably for kinetic study indicating that pesticide diffusion into carbons pores is important step which dictates the process rate. Suitability of kinetic models decreased with the increase in adsorbent dosage. Imidacloprid uptake was not influenced by the solution pH.

AB - In this paper, dielectric characterization of porous alumo-silicate ceramics, modified by alloying with magnesium and microalloying with aluminum, was investigated. Microstructure investigations have revealed non-uniform and highly porous structure with broad distribution of grain size, specifically shaped grains and high degree of agglomeration. Complex multiphase system, as active microalloyed ceramics, has specific behavior under external electrical field influence. Dielectric properties (the changes of permittivity, electrical resistivity, dielectric losses and impedance) were measured in the frequency range 20 Hz – 1 MHz. All characteristics showed nonlinear distribution and complex functional dependences because of significant nonhomogeneity of active microalloyed ceramics. Values for permittivity ranged between 140 – 430. Order of magnitude for electrical resistivity was about 106 Ωm, for impedance 104 – 108 Ω, and loss tangent had values much greater than 0.05. Mathematical model of linear regression was applied on the dielectric characterization results. Consistency with experimental data was approved, since the values for correlation coefficient r and determination coefficient r2 were obtained near value 1.

AB - Porous aluminium-silicate ceramics, modified by alloying with magnesium and microalloying with alluminium belongs to a group of advanced multifunctional ceramics materials. This multiphase solid-solid system has predominantly amorphous microstructure and micro morphology. Intergranular and interphase areas are very complex, because they represent areas, where numbered processes and interactions take place, making new boundaries and regions with fractal nature. Solid contact between grains is actually very complex configuration of microcontacts with fractal nature. Fractal analysis of intergranular microstructure has included application of Minkowski layer. This layer is in correlation with fractal dimension, and defines grains contact probability. It represents convex layer of grains contour roughness and irregularity. Considering the fractal nature of intergranular contacts, it is possible to establish correlation between material electrical properties and fractal analysis, as a tool for future correlation with microstructure characterization.

AB - The procedure for obtaining a bentonite based composite involves the application of mixed Fe and Mg hydroxides coatings onto bentonite particles in aqueous suspension and subsequent thermal treatment of the solid phase at 498K. Structural and textural modifications of montmorillonite which occurred during the synthesis of composite were confirmed by XRD technique and N-2 adsorption at 77K. The composite structure was found to be less ordered, while its specific surface area was about two times higher than the specific surface area of the starting/native bentonite. The effectiveness of the composite in Pb(II) removal from aqueous solutions at different initial concentrations, pH and ionic strengths of the solutions was examined. The equilibrium adsorption data were analyzed using three widely applied isotherms: Langmuir, Freundlich and Dubinin-Radushkevich. The composite effectively removes both ionic and colloidal forms of Pb(II) from water and the maximum adsorption capacity obtained from the Langmuir equation was 95.88 mg/g. The main mechanisms of Pb(II) removal at low pH values were ion-exchange and outer-sphere surface complexation. (C) 2011 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

AB - Adsorption of a cationic phenothyazine dye, Methylene Blue onto activated carbon prepared from pinecones was investigated. The parameters contact time, dye concentration and pH were varied. The kinetic data were found to follow closely the pseudo-second-order kinetic model. The equilibrium data were best represented by the Langmuir isotherm with a maximum adsorption capacity of 233.1 mg g(-1). The adsorption was favored by using a higher solution pH. Textural analysis by nitrogen adsorption was used to determine the specific surface area and pore structure of the obtained carbon. Boehm titrations revealed that carboxylic groups were present in a high degree on the carbon surface. The results indicate that the presented method for activation of pinecones could yield activated carbon with significant porosity, a developed surface reactivity and a considerable adsorption affinity toward the cationic dye Methylene Blue.

AB - This paper summarises the results of voltammetric studies on the herbicide 3-(3,4-dichlorophenyl)-1-methoxy-1-methylurea (Linuron), using a carbon paste electrode containing tricresyl phosphate (TCP-CPE) as liquid binder. The principal experimental conditions, such as the pH effect, investigated in Britton-Robinson buffer solutions (pH 2.0-7.0), the peak characteristics for the analyte of interest, or instrumental parameters for the differential pulse voltammetric mode were optimized for the method. As found out, the best electroanalytical performance of the TCP-CPE was achieved at pH 2.0, whereby the oxidation peak of Linuron appeared at ca. + 1.3 V vs. SCE. The analytical procedure developed offers good linearity in the concentration range of 1.25-44.20 mu g mL(-1) (1.77 x 10(-4)-5.05 x 10(-6) mol L-1), showing-for the first time-the applicability of the TCP-CPE for anodic oxidations in direct voltammetry (without accumulation). The method was then verified by determining Linuron in a spiked river water sample and a commercial formulation and the results obtained agreed well with those obtained by the reference HPLC/UV determination.

AB - In this study, a carbon paste electrode based on tricresyl phosphate (TCP-CPE) as a binder has been applied to the voltammetric characterization and determination of Carbendazim fungicide (methyl-1H-benzimidazol-2-yl-carbamate, MBC). The pH effect (in Britton-Robinson buffers, pH 2.0-8.0), as well as the presence of 2-hydroxypropyl-beta-cyclodextrin (HPCD) on the electrochemical behavior of MBC were investigated. In the potential range of interest, the oxidation signal was observed with the overall shape strongly dependent upon pH and exhibiting the most favorable signal-to-noise ratio in mild acidic solutions (pH 4.0). This has indicated that also protons are involved in the electrode transformation of MBC. Furthermore, it was confirmed that addition of 3.6.10(-5) mol L-1 HPCD significantly enhanced the sensitivity towards the target analyte. The experimental conditions optimised for the determination of MBC in the differential pulse adsorptive stripping voltammetric mode (DPAdSV) were as follows: initial potential, -0.10 V vs. Ag/AgCl; final potential, +1.30 V; accumulation potential, -0.35 V; accumulation time, 120 s, and the scan rate, 100 mV s(-1). The method developed offers linearity in the concentration range of 5.0 .10(-7) - 1.0.10(-5) mol L-1 MBC, with r = 0.995 and the limit of detection of about 3.0.10(-7) mol L-1. In a model sample of spiked river water, the recovery rate achieved was 101.9 % (at the concentrations from 1.0.10(-6) to 3.0.10(-6) mol L-1 MBC), suggesting one that the procedure can be applied in analysis of real samples.

AB - This paper presents voltametric studies of the linuron insecticide (3-(3,4-dichlorophenyl)-1methoxy-1-methylureum) on a boron doped glassy carbon (GCB), glassy carbon (GC) prepared in our laboratory and commercial glassy carbon electrode. The method, operated in the differential pulse voltammetric mode, works in the concetracion range from 0.62 to 26.09 mg L-1. We determined a peak potential, Ep, (1.25V), linear range and LOD for linuron in the sulfuric acid as a supporting electrolyte (pH=0.7) for all applied electrodes. GCB shows the broadest linear range and sensitivity. This appears to be the first aplication of a boron doped glassy carbon electrode to the voltammetric determination of linuron insecticide.

AB - This paper analyzes the conditions for membrane extraction of pesticides using ACD/LABS 12 program. The program contains a large database of more than 2000 compounds and their ionized species, for determining the pKa, further analysis includes 600 new compounds confirmed by Hammetts equation, which gives more precise values for log D and solubility. The 16 pesticides of different classes (organophosphates, carbamates, carbamidas, neonicotinoids etc.) and polarities commonly used in Serbia were examined. The program is used to calculate log D, pKa and solubility at different pH values for the mixture of pesticides. Based on the calculated values, the conditions for the extraction of pesticides in water using two-phase liquid liquid membrane extraction were optimized.

AB - This work presents the results obtained on the role of NaCl in chlorine roasting of MoS2. The process was performed in an oxygen atmosphere in the temperature range from 350 to 500 degrees C. The chlorine roasting of MoS2 in the mixture with NaCl was analysed and the products and change in the NaCl surface topography occurring during the processing were detected by x-ray diffractometry and Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM), respectively. At a temperature below 400 degrees C chemical activity of NaCl resulted in a change of NaCl surface topography. However, only MoO3 was detected. At a temperature above 400 degrees C Na2Mo2O7, Na2SO4 and MoO3 were detected, as well as the melt around NaCl particles. Evaporation and condensation on cold wall of reaction tube of some compounds containing molybdenum and chlorine were also detected. Such phenomena will not occur if oxidation takes place without NaCl or MoS2/NaCl mixture is annealed in an inert atmosphere. This indicates that all detected phenomena were caused by NaCl reactions with products of oxidation of MoS2 and chlorine roasting of MoS2 occurred in the melt.
