AB - J. nigra leaf contains mixture of various pharmacologically active compounds and it is assumed that they may have the potential radioprotective effect. The purpose of this work was to predict radioprotective doses by correlating changes in organ distribution of radiopharmaceuticals with extract dose levels and rat body weight using response surface methodology (RSM) based on a second-order polynomial equation. The extract was administered daily by oral gavage to rats at dose of 6.9, 10.3, or 13.7 mg kg−1 body weight (bw) day−1 for 10 days. On the eleventh day, 0.1 ml of the one radiopharmaceutical (Na99mTcO4, 99mTc-dimercaptosuccinic acid and 99mTc-tin colloid) was injected into the tail vein. The statistical parameters: the coefficient of determination (0.81–0.95), the coefficient of variation (3.05–11.1), the adequate precision (8.82–19.12) and the mean relative percentage deviation (± 2.3–8.2) were indicated the precision and reliability of RSM. Using RSM, the predicted daily dose of leaf extract ranging from 11.19 to 11.99 mg kg−1 bw may be considered as an optimal daily radiopotective dose for protection of organs from radiation in cases of planned radiation exposures.

AB - Juglansnigraleaf is a source of health-promoting biologically active compounds and used in traditional
medicine. Can we predict theradioprotective dose level of plant extracts based on modeling change
biodistribution of radiopharmaceuticals by response surface methodology (RSM)? The present study aimed
to the effects of J. nigra leaf extract oral intake on the biodistribution of 99mTc-radiopharmaceutical in
healthy rats and to formulate a mathematical model that will associate the changes in radioactivity in organ
with dose levels of extract and body mass of rats. The extract was administered daily by oral gavage to rats at
dose levels of 6.9, 10.3, or 13.7 mg kg-1 body weight (bw) day-1 for 10 days. On the eleventh day, 0.1 ml
(approximately 148 kBq) of the 99mTc-dimercaptosuccinic acid (DMSA) was injected into the tail vein. The
organs of interest were isolated and radioactivity in each organ was counted by a gamma counter with a NaI
(Tl) detector. After treatment of rats with the extract, there was a statistically significant decrease (p<0.05) in
the uptake of 99mTc-DMSA (%ID/organ) in the kidneys compared to controls. The RSM model based on the
second-order polynomial equation was apply to correlate changes in radioactivity in kidney with dose levels of
extract and body mass of rats. The statistical significance of RSM as well as independent variables and their
interactions were estimated by ANOVA (Analysis of variance). The F-value (265) and p-value (< 0,001)
demonstrated that the developed model has statistical significance at the confidence level of 95%. The R2
values (0.987) proved a good fit by the second-order polynomial equation, while relatively low values of the
CV (0.69) indicated the remarkable precision and reliability of the model. The low value of mean relative
percent deviation (0.4) between the experimental data and the predicted radioactivity of kidney obtained by
RSM showed that RSM was suitable for modeling the change biodistributionof radiopharmaceutical.
Modeling data provided evidence that the radioactivityof kidney statistically depended dose levels of extract
and statistically not depended of body mass of rats. RSM gave the minimum predicted value of radioactivity
of kidney 59%, which corresponded to minimum dose levelof 11.18 mg kg-1and minimum body massof 130 g.
RSM showed that extracts of J. nigraleaf kidney system protectionat doses higher than 11.18 mg kg-1. These
results suggest the potential use minimal dose level of J. nigraleaf extract as a radioprotector in cases of
planned radiation exposures.

AB - Natural radionuclides are omnipresent in the environment. However, our environment is also contaminated with anthropogenic radionuclides that appear as a consequence of human activities. One of the main sources of increased radioactive contamination in environment was nuclear accident in Chernobyl in 1986. Medicinal herbs have long history of worldwide consumption in traditional medicine. Therefore, it is necessary to control the usage of medicinal herbs and their products, from radiological point of view, as well. In that way, unwanted radiological effects on human health can be avoided. The paper deals with radiological analysis of 7 selected medicinal herbs: (Thymus serpyllum L., Breckland thyme; Hypericum perforatum L., St. John's wort; Rosa canina L., Dog-rose; Mentha sp., mint; Melissa officinalis L., Lemon balm; Tilia tomentosa L., Silver Linden; Achillea millefolium, Yarrow) from the region of Fruška Gora, Republic of Serbia. Specific activities of 137Cs, 40K and 210Pb in medicinal herbs samples are determined by using HPGe gamma-ray spectrometer system. From obtained specific activities individual annual effective doses due to daily ingestion of 200 ml infusion of medicinal herbs were deduced. Obtained specific activities are in intervals: <1.4 Bq/kg, (303 – 1073) Bq/kg and (3.58 – 35.6) Bq/kg, for137Cs, 40K and 210Pb, respectively. Deduced individual annual effective doses due to ingestion are similar to the literature data and are smaller than the recommended limit of 100 μSv, defined in Article 8 of the Regulation on limits of radionuclide content in drinking water, foodstuffs, feeding stuffs, drugs, items of general use, building materials and other goods to be placed on the market (Official Gazette of the Republic of Serbia, 2018). Therefore, a daily use of 200 mL of herbal infusion during a year made from the investigated medicinal herbs does not pose a significant radiological health risk for consumers.

AB - eir daughter products, as well as 40K. It is widely used in industry as well as in energy pro-duction. The problems associated with the production of energy from coal is the so-called “energy waste”, such as ash and slag, which are incombustible and unburnt residue from combustion of coal. If ash and slag are released into the environment an increase and/or redistribution of natural radio-nuclide content can occur. To determine the potential impact of “energy waste” on the environment, samples of coal, ash, and slag from thermal power plant "Nikola Tesla" and "Kolubara" were meas-ured with a semiconductor HPGe spectrometer. Results of activity concentration of natural radionu-clides and artificial 137Cs in coal, slag and ash are presented in few previously published papers and obtained values are in accordance with similar worldwide investigations. o ensure the accuracy and precision (reliability) ofthe obtained measurement results, quality control (QC) and quality assurance (QA) program were established. Internal control includes check-ing of the characteristics of HPGe spectrometer used for measurement of all analysed samples. Point sources of 60Co and 137Cs are used as control sources for checking following characteristics: peak positions, net peak area, FWHMs (Full Width at Half Maximum), FWTMs (Full Width at Tenth Max-imum) and FWHM/FWTM ratios. In addition to the mentioned characteristics, the counting of back-ground is also regularly controlled. Each of the mentioned characteristics may indicate some irreg-ularity in the operation of the detector system and thus could influence reliability of performed activ-ity concentration measurements. The paper presents the control charts of the examined characteristics of the HPGe spectrometer used for measurements of coal, ash and slag samples. The obtained control charts indicate the long-term stability of the spectrometer and hence confirm accuracy and precision of measurement results.

The obtained control charts indicate the long-term stability of the spectrometer and hence confirm accuracy and precision of measurement results.",

In this work, 9 types of medicinal plants from the area of Gučevo (Western Serbia) were analysed. The specific activities of natural radionuclides 210-Pb i 40-K as well as Cs-137 were determined using a semiconductor HPGe spectrometer. Annual effective dose due to ingestion were calculated for each measured radionuclide, and for two age categories (one year old and adult). All calculations are based on the assumption daily consumption of 200 ml of herbal tea. The obtained values for the annual effective dose due to ingestion point to the conclusion that the daily use of medicinal plant teas from the analyzed area does not represent a significant radiological risk for the health of adults, but caution and prudence are necessary when it is about children.

AB - Kontrola kvaliteta laboratorijskog procesa zauzima značajno mesto u svakodnevnom laboratorijskom radu.

The paper presents the results of a three-and-a-half-year analysis of the gamma spectrometric system measurements in the Laboratory for Nuclear and Plasma Physics of the INN "Vinča". Measurements were made once a week and point sources Co-60 and Cs-137 were used as control sources. In addition to monitoring the count below the peak, the position of the peak, the full width at half maximum (FWHM), the full width at tenth maximum (FWTM), as well as their mutual ratio (FWTM/FWHM), the count in the background was also monitored. The results show that the gamma spectrometric system has satisfactory stability over a long period of time.

AB - The routine measurements of environmental samples using gamma-ray spectrometry indicate the needs for preparing radioactive standards for various matrices. The radioactive standards are used in all phases of the measurement process, including method validation, calibration and quality control. In the Radiation and Environmental Protection Departmen in the "Vinča" Institute of Nuclear Sciences, radioactive standards are prepared using a certified radioactive solution of mixed radionuclides. The procedure for radioactive standards preparation, which includes matrix selection and preparation, spiking with a certified radioactive solution, homogeneity check, matrix packing in the appropriate geometry and measurement of the prepared standards using a gamma spectrometer, is described in this paper. For all matrix materials, "blank" samples were prepared in the same manner as the standard materials and measured in the same geometry as the calibration samples. After the analysis of recorded spectra and evaluation of the obtained data for efficiency at given energies, calibration curves were obtained by fitting. The uncertainty budget of the activity for all radionuclides present in the prepared standards is also defined in this paper.

AB - Tc-99m-radiopharmaceuticals are used in various diagnostic procedures in nuclear medicine. In order to minimize the harmful effects of ionizing radiation on healthy tissues, the radioprotective properties of plant extracts are intensively researched. J. nigra husk contains a mixture of various pharmacologically active compounds that have an antioxidant effect and which are assumed to have a potential radioprotective effect. In this context, the aim of the work was to evaluate the radioprotective effect of black walnut husk extract. In this study, an experimental model was applied, which was based on the assessment of the effect of the extract on the biodistribution of Tc-99m-radiopharmaceuticals in the organs of experimental animals (rats). Black walnut husk extract led to a decrease in the accumulation of Tc-99m-radiopharmaceutical in certain organs of rats. The results obtained on the basis of the experimental model suggest that it is possible to use black walnut husk extract as a radioprotective agent in cases of planned exposure to ionizing radiation in diagnosticsnuclear medicine.

AB - The aims of this research were preparation of Juglans nigra husk extracts by employing an ultrasonic-assisted extraction method and process optimization of minerals extraction using response surface methodology. Extracts from J. nigra L. fresh husk were prepared using ethanol (70%, v/v) as a solvent, at different extraction temperatures: 15, 30 and 40 °C, and extraction times: 5, 15, 30, 60 and 80 min. The content of minerals in ethanol extracts was determined using inductively coupled plasma optical emission spectrometry (ICP-OES). The response surface methodology (RSM) was developed to evaluate the effect of two extraction factors as well as to optimize the extraction variables for each mineral individually. The RSM models pointed out 40 °C temperature and extraction time in the range 77–80 min as optimal conditions for extraction of macro- and micro-elements. Results of RSM optimization showed the relative order of maximum obtained yield of macro-elements: K>P>S>Ca>Mg and maximum yield of micro-elements was Si>Zn>Sr>Cu.

AB - MetroPOEM (Metrology for harmonization of measuremenets of environmental pollutant in Europe) je trogodišnji evropski projekat finansiran u okviru EMPIR programa.
AB - The MetroPOEM project (Metrology for harmonization of measurements of environmental pollutants in Europe) is a three-year European project financed under the EMPIR program. The global aspiration towards as little pollution as possible (European Green Deal's ambition for zero pollution) requires the development of highly sensitive techniques that can detect low concentrations of pollutants. Mass spectrometry is the most important technique for determining non-radioactive, but also long-lived radioactive pollutants. The main goal of this project is to establish a link between radiometric and mass pollutant measurement techniques. Also, the goal of the project is the reduction of measurement uncertainties, detection limits, but also the development of new reference materials that would ensure the traceability of measurement procedures.

AB - In order to compare alpha-particle and gamma-ray spectrometry, the activity concentrations of 235U, 238U and 226Ra in samples of coal, slag and fly-ash from the thermal power plant “Nikola Tesla A”, Serbia, were determined by these two methods. Methods were compared and discussed from the point of view of its precision, difficulty to apply and complexity. Gamma-ray spectrometry was performed with HPGe (High Purity Germanium) spectrometer, while alpha activity was measured by PIPS (Passivated Implanted Planar Silicon) detector. For the alpha-particle spectrometry, the chemical procedures applied were chromatographic resin extraction for uranium isotopes and micro-coprecipitation for 226Ra. Thin alpha sources were prepared by electrodeposition and filtration through polypropylene membrane filter for uranium determination, while filtration technique was performed for radium sources. For the evaluation of the statistical difference between individual measurement results obtained by application of two methods Z - test was used. In order to evaluate the difference between two methods used, paired samples t-test and F-test were applied. Results show that there is no statistical difference between two methods used and that gamma-ray spectrometry is a valid alternative to time consuming alpha spectrometry.

AB - This study showed that 137Cs concentrations in black walnut leaf and fruit, as well as in tinctures were below the detection limits. Concentrations of other radionuclides are lower than their concentrations in the soil, except for concentration of 40K in black walnut fruit, which objectively have more potassium due to the structure of the fruit. It indicates that the consumption of leaf and nut tinctureis absolutely safe, especially in relation to artificial radionuclides.

AB - Juglans nigra L. (Black walnut) green husk contains a variety of useful chemical compounds with numerous health benefits. However, the biological effects of these compounds are not fully known. The aim of this research was to evaluate the effect of the extracts from J. nigra green husks on the biodistribution of the sodium pertechenetate (Na99mTcO4). The extract was orally administered to the healthy Wistar rats (male, 1-month-old, weighing 89.4±3.4g) at single doses of 13.7 mg/kg/day by gavage for 10 days. On the eleventh day, 0.1 ml (approximately 148 kBq) of the Na99mTcO4 was injected into the tail vein. Rats were sacrificed at different time intervals and the radioactivity in the organs of interest was measured in a gamma counter with a NaI (Tl) detector. The percentage of radioactivity per organ (%ID/organ) was calculated. The organ uptake of the Na99mTcO4 in an additional control group of animals was also studied. The results obtained showed an alteration in the organ uptake of Na99mTcO4 in rats treated with extract. The radiopharmaceutical Na99mTcO4 is generally distributed throughout the vasculature and interstitial fluid and is concentrated in the stomach, intestinal tract, thyroid and salivary glands. After treatment of rats with the extract, there was a statistically significant decrease (p<0.05) in the uptake of Na99mTcO4 (%ID/organ) in the thyroid, heart, kidneys, liver and colon, and an increase in intestinal uptake compared to controls. These results are associated with properties of the chemical compounds present in the J. nigra extract. We assume that the compounds from the extract J. nigra could promote physiological modifications in these organs and alter the biodistribution of Na99mTcO4 in the treated animals. Although these research studies were performed in animals, the findings suggest that caution should be exercised while interpreting the results of Na99mTcO4 based nuclear medicine examinations in patients using J. nigra extract from green husk.

AB - The gammaspectrometric measurement of the environmental samples requires the use of appropriate calibration standards in order to achieve the accuracy and precision of the obtained results. Taking into account that the standards lose their quality over time due to the degradation of the matrix, it is extremely important to keep tracking their stability. Comprehensive reconsideration on efficiency curves with respect to the ageing of calibration standards is presented in this paper. Spiked laboratory standards of different matrices (active coal, soil and sand) were prepared in two measurement geometries, PVC cylindrical 120 ml and 250 ml boxes. The same standards were measured after four years in contact geometry on the detector and upside down (box cover towards the detector). The analysis of the obtained results showed discrepancies in efficiency values and it indicates that the homogeneity of standards is disturbed. Such standards are not reliable for use.

AB - The industry development has led to the increasing industrial aplication of radiation sources, as closed radiation sources or radiation generators. They have been widely used by various industries to improve the quality of product, optimize processes, save energy and materials. Any aplication of radiation sources implies the need for appropriate radiation protection in order to reduce unnecessary exposure of people who work with radiation sources in the situation of planned and emergency exposure. International commission of radiation protection (ICRP) suggested general principles of radiation protection in terms of three key words: justification, optimization and dose limit. Center for permanent education (CPE) of the “Vinča“ Institute of nuclear sciences is a unique educational institution in Serbia. The main objective of the CPE is an additional and complementary education of various profiles of specialists who use sources of ionizing radiation in their everyday work. The results of the CPE in the education of exposed workers and radiation protection officers in the industry aplication for the period from 2011 to 2020 are presented in this paper. The analysis of these results shows the success of the application of regulations in industrial usage of radiation sources.

The analysis of these results shows the success of the application of regulations in industrial usage of radiation sources.",

AB - The Center for permanent education (CPE) of the “Vinča” Institute of nuclear sciences is a unique educational institution in Serbia. The main objective of the CPE is an additional and complementary education of various profiles of specialists who use radioactive isotopes and sources of ionizing radiation in their everyday work in accordance with the Law on Radiation and Nuclear Safety and Security of Serbia. Application of ionizing radiation in various fields of activity (industry, medicine, scientific research) carries the appropriate risks to the health and safety of those who work with ionizing radiation sources. It is therefore crucial that the handling of radioactive sources and ionizing radiation generators, as well as the handling of nuclear waste, be in line with certain safety standards aimed at protecting those exposed to ionizing radiation. Center for Permanent Education is authorized by the Directorate for Radiation and Nuclear Safety and Security of Serbia to provide additional training and education for occupationally exposed persons and persons responsible for implementing measures radiation protection. Accordingly, the activities of the Center are focused on the organization of different types of courses, depending on the category of a particular radiation activity. Permanent education program defines: additional and appropriate training before beginning work with radiation sources, training of persons responsible for implementing radiation protection measures, and periodic renewal of knowledge provided for all occupationally exposed persons at least once in five years. The special type of courses refers to courses for work with open sources of radiation, where longer and more detailed training is required. The aim of this work is to present the achieved results related to the number of held courses and the number of participants between 2011 and 2020, as well as years with the most and the least held courses and years with the largest and the smallest number of participants. These numbers have been changed in accordance with the requirements of legal regulations related to radiation protection. The Center for permanent education has worked since 1956, but information about all courses and candidates have been kept within database program only since 2011. During that period, 1503 different courses were held related to radiation protection. The most courses (272) were held in 2018 and the least (43) in 2011. Regarding the number of candidates, 5805 candidates completed the courses in the period between 2011 and to 2020. The largest number of candidates (1036) were in 2018, and the smallest (185) in 2013. The CPE aims to improve the quality of its services and strives to continuously follow and introduce modern and new methods of education for the next period.

AB - This paper presents the results of analyses of radionuclide content in the samples of the surrounding soil and clayey material of “Zbegovi” open-pit mine in Donje Crniljevo, Serbia. Samples from 78 sites were collected and prepared. The activity concentrations were determined for radionuclides: 238U, 232Th, 40K, 226Ra, and 137Cs. The mean values obtained are as follows: 23 Bqkg–1, 89 Bqkg–1, 372 Bqkg–1, 56 Bqkg–1, and 11 Bqkg–1, respectively. Concentrations of 238U, 40K, and 226Ra in the studied area do not deviate from the values obtained for the soil in Serbia. The concentration of 232Th in the studied area is slightly higher relative to average values for soil, and slightly lower compared to similar deposits of clayey material in the world. Measurements performed showed that the open-pit mine of clayey material is completely uncontaminated surface as far as 137Cs is concerned, while there are sites where measured 137Cs concentrations are significantly higher, which is due to topographic differences and inhomogeneous surface contamination of land after the Chernobyl accident. To assess the radiological risks in the observed area, the following indices were determined: absorbed dose rate, annual outdoor effective dose, absorbed dose for biota, excess lifetime cancer risk outdoors as well as external radiation hazard index. The mean value of the estimated absorbed dose rate in the given area amounts to 80.1 nGyh–1, and the annual outdoor effective dose ranges from 46.9 to 134 Sv. Absorbed dose rate for biota in the studied area is 1.31 10–4 Gyd–1. The mean excess lifetime cancer risk outdoors for the population is 3.8 10–4, and t he mean value of the external radiation hazard index obtained in this study is 0.48, which is consistent with the world average. A low dose of radiation will not pose a risk to the population and biota in the studied area.

AB - The probabilities of locating peaks with a high relative peak-area uncertainty were determined empirically with nine types of peak-location software used in laboratories engaged in gamma-ray spectrometry measurements. It was found that it is not possible to locate peaks with a probability of 0.95, when they have a relative peak-area uncertainty in excess of 50%. Locating peaks at these relatively high peak-area uncertainties with a probability greater than 0.95 is only possible in the library-driven mode, where the peak positions are supposed a-priori. The deficiencies of the library-driven mode and the possibilities to improve the probabilities of locating peaks are briefly discussed. © 2019 Elsevier Ltd

AB - Center for permanent education (CPE) of the "Vinča" Institute of nuclear sciences is a unique educational institution in Serbia. The main objective of the CPE is an additional and complementary education of various profiles of specialists who use radioactive isotopes and sources of ionizing radiation in their everyday work. The CPE aims to improve the quality of its services and strives to continuously follow and introduce modern and new methods of education. The increasing development of information technologies has influenced the development of methods and techniques in the education itself. The latest trend in education is to replace the real laboratories with the virtual ones. The employees of the Center for Permanent Education have, therefore, decided to enrich the CPE courses with virtual software applications. Their use explains the basic concepts of ionizing radiation protection and safety in a simple, easy and fun way. In this paper, we describe some of the virtual software applications that are used in the laboratory curriculum of the CPE courses aimed at furthering education of professionals who work with radioactive sources and generators of ionizing radiation.

AB - A method is presented for calculating the expected number of counts in peaks that have a large relative peak area uncertainty and appear in measured gamma-ray spectra. The method was applied to calculations of the correction factors for peaks occurring in the spectra of radon daughters. It was shown that the factors used for correcting the calculated peak areas to their expected values decrease with an increasing relative peak-area uncertainty. The accuracy of taking the systematic influence inducing the correction factors into account is given by the dispersion of the correction factors corresponding to specific peaks. It was shown that the highest accuracy is obtained in the peak analyses with the GammaVision and Gamma-W software.
