AB - Pure hematite nanorods and very long and thin cobalt-doped hematite nanorods (nanoneedles) were prepared by a combined precipitation and annealing method. The influence of the level of cobalt doping on different properties of hematite nanorods was investigated. Incorporation of cobalt in the form of low-spin Co3+ ions into the structure of hematite by substitution for high-spin Fe3+ ions was proved by determination of a significant unit cell contraction by powder X-ray diffraction (PXRD) and characteristic positions of the absorption edge in X-ray absorption near edge structure (XANES) spectra and peaks in X-ray emission (XES) spectra. Cobalt doping caused a gradual elongation and thinning of hematite nanorods – very long and thin 1D nanoparticles (nanoneedles) were formed in the presence of 10 and 12 mol% Co. Magnetic measurements showed a strong increase in low-temperature remanent magnetization and coercivity upon cobalt doping, as well as a disappearance of the Morin transition, which was also confirmed by Mössbauer spectroscopy. Cobalt doping significantly affected optical properties of hematite nanorods – absorption in the visible and NIR ranges increased, which was accompanied by narrowing of the optical band gap. Compared with pure hematite nanorods cobalt-doped hematite nanoneedles showed a significantly better electrocatalytic activity for the oxygen evolution reaction (OER). © 2020 Elsevier Ltd

AB - Memory effect due to spin-glass state below about 20 K has been illustrated in the hollandite-type α-KxMnO2 monocrystalline nanorods by systematic magnetization measurements including temperature- and time-dependent magnetization curves in low fields. In this work, we succeeded in writing, reading, and deleting 8-bits digital information in the investigated system. These results show that α-KxMnO2 is a good candidate material for a thermal memory cell. The phenomenological droplet model was used in the description of the observed memory effect, whose origin in α-KxMnO2 is associated with bulk properties, doping and frustration. © 2019 Elsevier B.V.

AB - In this investigation, we have synthesized YbxY1-xF3 solid solutions by fluorination of yttrium and ytterbium sesquioxides with ammonium hydrogen difluoride. According to the XRD analysis, all synthesized YbxY1-xF3 samples have an orthorhombic crystal structure belonging to the β-YF3 structural type. The refinement of crystal structure was done by the Rietveld method within the Pnma space group using the TCH pseudo-Voigt function. The anisotropic peak broadening was analyzed, and the average apparent crystallite size is about 50 nm with a small anisotropy of shape, while the significant microstrain that is highly anisotropic is present in all samples. The temperature-dependent magnetic susceptibility was analyzed by applying the model of a free ion perturbed by the crystal field. We have obtained the effective magnetic quantum numbers Mieff of four Kramer's doublets of Yb3+ ion along with the entire crystal field splitting of the 2F7/2 manifold of Yb3+ in YF3. The acquired maximum energy splitting of the ground level is about 150 K in our most diluted samples. The field-dependent isothermal magnetization measurements were carried out at various temperatures and analyzed by classical Langevin function. Results obtained from magnetic measurements show that all YbxY1-xF3 (x ≠ 0) solid solutions exhibit pure paramagnetic behavior in the whole temperature range from 2 to 300 K, with a predominant antiferromagnetic exchange interactions. © 2020 Elsevier Ltd

AB - Ferrofluids based on magnesium substituted magnetite nanoparticles MgxFe3−xO4 (x = 0.1; 0.2; 0.4) were synthesised by a chemical co-precipitation method. Their physical properties have been compared with those of the magnetite based ferrofluid obtained by the same synthesis route. Both XRD and TEM studies showed particle size decrease with the increased Mg content while DLS experiments pointed to the more prominent aggregation of Mg-containing nanoparticles. Magnetic properties investigation conducted on the powder (i.e. dried) specimens showed decrease of magnetization values with increased Mg content except for the lowest concentration of x = 0.1 where substantial saturation magnetization rise of about 40% was recorded at room temperature. Heating abilities of the studied ferrofluids under the applied AC fields (SAR values) also showed decreasing trend with the increased Mg content even for x = 0.1 sample despite its elevated magnetization value. This trend has been understood as a consequence of the changed intrinsic nanoparticle properties such as size and magnetic anisotropy, as well as contribution of a collective behaviour due to an increased nanoparticle aggregation in Mg-doped systems.

AB - Nanocomposites (HAp/iron oxide), made of hydroxyapatite (HAp) and ferrimagnetic iron oxide, were synthesized by high-energy ball milling a mixture consisting of iron oxide nanoparticles and the starting materials used for the HAp synthesis: calcium hydrogen phosphate anhydrous (CaHPO4), and calcium hydroxide (Ca(OH)2). Two HAp/iron oxide samples with the magnetic phase content of 12 and 30 wt.% were prepared and their microstructure, morphology and magnetic properties were analysed by X-ray diffraction and transmission electron microscopy. Furthermore, the measurement of particle size distribution was performed by laser scattering, and temperature/field dependence on magnetization was determined. X-ray diffraction data confirmed the formation of two-phased samples (HAp and spinel iron oxide) without the presence of any other parasite phase. The shape of particles was nearly spherical in both samples, ranging from only a few to several tens of nanometres in diameter. These particles formed agglomerates with the most common value of the number-based particle size distribution of 380 and 310 nm for the sample with 12 and 30 wt.% of iron oxide, respectively. Magnetization data showed that both HAp/iron oxide composites had superparamagnetic behaviour at room temperature. © 2019 University of Novi Sad, Faculty of Technology. All rights reserved.

AB - Ni-doped goethite (α-FeOOH) nanorods were synthesized from mixed Fe(III)-Ni(II) nitrate solutions with various Ni/(Ni+Fe) ratios (0, 5, 10, 20, 33 and 50 mol % Ni) by hydrothermal precipitation in a highly alkaline medium using the strong organic alkali, tetramethylammonium hydroxide (TMAH). Ni-doped hematite (α-Fe2O3) nanorods were obtained by calcination of Ni-doped goethite nanorods at 400 °C. The Ni 2+ -for-Fe 3+ substitution in goethite and hematite was confirmed by determination of the unit cell expansion (due to the difference in the ionic radii of Fe 3+ and Ni 2+ ) using XRPD and determination of the reduction of a hyperfine magnetic field (due to the difference in magnetic moments of Fe 3+ and Ni 2+ ) using Mössbauer spectroscopy. Single-phase goethite nanorods were found in samples containing 0 or 5 mol % Ni. A higher Ni content in the precipitation system (10 mol % or more) resulted in a higher Ni 2+ -for-Fe 3+ substitution in goethite, and larger Ni-doped goethite nanorods, though with the presence of low crystalline Ni-containing ferrihydrite and Ni ferrite (NiFe2O4) as additional phases. Significant changes in FT-IR and UV-Vis-NIR spectra of prepared samples were observed with increasing Ni content. Electrochemical measurements of samples showed a strong increase in oxygen evolution reaction (OER) electrocatalytic activity with increasing Ni content. © 2018 Croatian Chemical Society. AB - This paper systematically examines the influence of the level of Fe(III) doping on the crystal structure and other properties of Ni(OH)(2). Reference beta-Ni(OH)(2) and Fe-doped Ni(OH)(2) samples were synthesized by hydrothermal precipitation of mixed Ni(II) and Fe(III) nitrate aqueous solutions in a highly alkaline medium. The samples were investigated using X-ray powder diffraction (XRPD), scanning and transmission electron microscopy (FE-SEM and TEM), energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS), Mossbauer spectroscopy, magnetic measurements, Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR) spectroscopy, ultraviolet-visible-near infrared (UV-Vis-NIR) spectroscopy, thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) and electrochemical measurements. Incorporation of Fe in beta-Ni(OH)(2) by cation substitution was confirmed from the shifts in position of XRPD lines due to the difference in the ionic radius of Fe3+ and Ni-2. The Fe-3-for-Ni2+ substitution in beta-Ni(OH)(2) caused formation of an interstratifled structure with beta-Ni(OH)(2) and alpha-Ni(OH)(2) structural units interconnected within the same structural layers and crystallites. Mossbauer spectra revealed the presence of Fe3+ ions in highly distorted octahedral sites, presumably at the boundary between the alpha-Ni(OH)(2) and beta-Ni(OH)(2) structural units within the same structural layer. Electrochemical measurements showed significant increase in oxygen evolution reaction (OER) catalytic activity of Fe-doped Ni(OH)(2) compared to pure phase. (C) 2018 Elsevier B.V. AB - Magnetic nanoparticles (MNPs) are of immense interest for diagnostic and therapeutic applications in medicine. Design and development of new iron oxide-based MNPs for such applications is of rather limited breadth without reliable and sensitive methods to determine their levels in body tissues. Commonly used methods, such as ICP, are quite problematic, due to the inability to decipher the origin of the detected iron, i.e. whether it originates from the MNPs or endogenous from tissues and bodily fluids. One of the approaches to overcome this problem and to increase reliability of tracing MNPs is to partially substitute iron ions in the MNPs with Er. Here, we report on the development of citric add coated (Fe,Er)(3)O-4 nanopartides and characterization of their physico-chemical and biological properties by utilization of various complementary approaches. The synthesized MNPs had a narrow (6-7 nm) size distribution, as consistently seen in atomic pair distribution function, transmission electron microscopy, and DC magnetization measurements. The particles were found to be superparamagnetic, with a pronounced maximum in measured zero-field cooled magnetization at around 90 K. Reduction in saturation magnetization due to incorporation of 1.7% Er3+ into the Fe3O4 matrix was clearly observed. From the biological standpoint, citric acid coated (Fe,Er)(3)O-4 NPs were found to induce low toxicity both in human cell fibroblasts and in zebrafish (Danio rerio) embryos. Biodistribution pattern of the MNPs after intravenous administration in healthy Wistar rats was followed by the radiotracer method, revealing that Y-90-labeled MNPs were predominantly found in liver (7533% ID), followed by lungs (16.70% ID) and spleen (2.83% ID). Quantitative agreement with these observations was obtained by ICP-MS elemental analysis using Er as the detected tracer. Based on the favorable physical, chemical and biological characteristics, citric add coated (Fe,Er)(3)O-4 MNPs could be further considered for the potential application as a diagnostic and/or therapeutic agent. This work also demonstrates that combined application of these techniques is a promising tool for studies of pharmacokinetics of the new MNPs in complex biological systems. (C) 2017 Elsevier B.V. AB - Radiolabeled magnetic nanoparticles (MNPs) coated with hydrophilic phosphate ligands, i.e., imidodiphosphate (IDP) and inositol hexaphosphate (IHP), were developed as multifunctional agents to localize both radioactivity and magnetic energy at a tumor site. The coating of MNPs with phosphates made them biocompatible, increased their colloidal stability and allowed binding of the radionuclide Y-90 to the available functional groups on the surface of the MNPs. IDP and IHP have not hitherto been used for the coating of MNPs and the results of this study of the functionalized MNPs showed that the phosphate groups influenced the modification of the surface of MNPs. Characterization of the MNPs was performed using X-ray powder diffraction, transmission electron microscopy, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, dynamic light scattering and laser Doppler electrophoresis. The specific power absorption values obtained for MNPs (46.95-80.76 W g(-1)) in different physiological media indicated their possible application in hyperthermia treatment. Both types of coated MNPs were Y-90-labeled in a reproducible high yield ( GT 98%). In vitro studies of Y-90-MNPs in saline and human serum showed their high stability after 72 h. The biodistribution pattern of the MNPs after intravenous administration to healthy Wistar rats was followed by the radiotracer method, revealing that Y-90-Fe3O4-IDP and Y-90-Fe3O4-IHP MNPs were predominantly found in the liver (85.21% ID and 86.22% ID), followed by the spleen (9.23% ID and 8.82% ID) and the lungs (1.53% ID and 1.53% ID). The results of this comprehensive study showed that radiolabeled biocompatible phosphate magnetic complexes hold great promise for therapeutic uses combining magnetic hyperthermia and radiotherapy.

AB - Spherical gamma-Fe2O3 nanoparticles with the narrow size distribution of (5 +/- 1) nm were synthesized by the method of thermal decomposition from iron acetyl acetonate precursor. The existence of super spin-glass state at low temperatures and in low applied magnetic fields was confirmed by DC magnetization measurements on a SQUID magnetometer. The comprehensive investigation of magnetic relaxation dynamics in low-temperature region was conducted through the measurements of single-stop and multiple stop ZFC memory effects, ZFC magnetization relaxation, and AC susceptibility measurements. The experimental findings revealed the peculiar change of magnetic relaxation dynamics at T approximate to 10 K, which arose as a consequence of simultaneous existence of different relaxation processes in Fe2O3 nanoparticle system. Complementarity of the applied measurements was utilized in order to single out distinct relaxation processes as well as to elucidate complex relaxation mechanisms in the investigated interacting nanoparticle system.

The experimental findings revealed the peculiar change of magnetic relaxation dynamics at T approximate to 10 K, which arose as a consequence of simultaneous existence of different relaxation processes in Fe2O3 nanoparticle system. Complementarity of the applied measurements was utilized in order to single out distinct relaxation processes as well as to elucidate complex relaxation mechanisms in the investigated interacting nanoparticle system.",

AB - Herein we present the results of specific loss power (SLP) analysis of polydisperse water based ferrofluids, Fe3O4/PEG200 and Fe3O4/PEG6000, with average Fe3O4 particle size of 9 nm and 11 nm, respectively. Specific loss power was measured in alternating magnetic field of various amplitudes and at fixed frequency of 580.5 kHz. Maximum SLP values acquired were 195 W/g for Fe3O4/PEG200 and 60 W/g for Fe3O4/PEG6000 samples. The samples were labeled as superparamagnetic by magnetization measurements, but SLP field dependence showed deviation from the behavior predicted by the commonly employed linear response theory. The scope of this theory for both samples with wide particle size distribution is discussed. Deviation from the expected behavior is explained by referring to polydisperse nature of the samples and field dependent relaxation rates. (C) 2015 AIP Publishing LLC.

AB - Influence of thermal-annealing-controlled crystallite size on the magnetic/electric properties of Yb substituted Zn-ferrite nanoparticles (ZnFe1.95Yb0.05O4) is studied, and results of the analysis are presented here. Room temperature Mossbauer spectrum of as-prepared sample shows coexistence of the sextet/doublet structure due to the particle size distribution. The central doublet originating from superparamagnetic relaxations of smaller particles is found to constitute the major fraction of the Fe-57 signal in samples obtained by thermal annealing of as-prepared sample at various temperatures in 300 degrees C-800 degrees C range. The determined quadrupole splitting (QS) parameters are significantly higher compared to corresponding bulk counterpart value and display decreasing trend with the crystallite size increase. The similar to 29 nm-sample, obtained by annealing at 800 degrees C, shows bulk-like properties, both in terms of the observed QS value and observed distribution of iron ions within the spinel lattice. Electric resistivity has non-monotonic dependence on crystallite-size, which could be attributed to enhanced disorder in as-prepared material. Partial substitution of iron by ytterbium in Zn-ferrite is found to increase the dielectric constant.

AB - Magnetic nanocomposites can show enhanced properties compared to their single phase counterparts. Novel soft ferrite Fe3O4/soft ferrite MnFe2O4 nanocomposite, as well as pure MnFe2O4 and Fe3O4 for the sake of comparison, were synthesized by co-precipitation method. The spinel type of structure (space group Fd (3) over barm) of the samples was confirmed by XRPD and SAED. Samples are composed of spherical particles with size in the range 5-15 nm. Nanocomposite (92 wt%) MnFe2O4/(8 wt%) Fe3O4 exert single phase like magnetic behavior. Saturation magnetization (M-S) of Fe3O4/MnFe2O4 is 26% greater than M-S of MnFe2O4 and even 50% than M-S of Fe3O4. At the same time coercivity field of the nanocomposite is twice less value (H-C=180 Oe) than in binary ferrites (H-C=360 Oe). Magnetization enhancement and softening in Magnetite/Mn-ferrite is discussed related to particle interactions among two different ferrites and intrinsic properties of nanoparticles. Tailoring phase ratio and synthesis conditions can be a tool for tuning magnetic properties of nanocomposites. (C) 2014 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

The following correlations of crystallite size with physical parameters were found: (a) lattice parameter decreases with the increase in size and it reaches value for bulk counterpart approximately for crystallites bigger than 7 nm, (b) ac electrical resistivity at room temperature increases with the increase in crystallite size, (c) for crystallites of similar to 7 nm or smaller electrical resistivity have maximum value at 50 degrees C, (d) the real part of permittivity at selected frequency generally decreases with the increase in crystallite size and (e) magnetization increases with the increase in crystallite size. Deviation of stoichiometry, cation polyvalence, and cation redistribution with annealing are the main factors that influence physical properties of Nickel ferrite nanoparticles. pathophysiology of depression. We investigated the effect of 21d of chronic
social isolation (CSIS) stress (an animal model of depression) and/or
chronic administration of fluoxetine (15 mg/kg/day), an antidepressant, on
GSH content, protein expression and activity of glutathione peroxidase
(GPx) and glutathione reductase (GLR) in the cytosolic fraction of rat
hippocampus. CSIS stress caused reduced GPx and GLR protein expression
which was not prevented with fluoxetine treatment. Moreover, fluoxetine
administration intensified reduction of these proteins expression. Decreased
GSH content, GPx and GLR activity was also found in chronically-isolated
animals (vehicle- or fluoxetine treated). Data indicate that fluoxetine not
only failed to prevent CSIS-induced changes but itself compromised GSHdependent
defense system in control animals.

AB - Changes in glutathione (GSH)-related systems are implicated in depressive
disorders. Since chronic psychosocial stress contributes to depression, we
investigated the effects of 21d of chronic social isolation (CSIS) stress, an
animal model of depression, as well as chronic administration of clozapine,
an atypical antipsychotic, on GSH content, glutathione peroxidase (GPx)
and glutathione reductase (GLR) in the prefrontal cortex of rats. Increased
GPx protein expression and its activity in clozapine-treated (controls or
chronically-isolated) rats as well as in CSIS group were found. Nonetheless,
clozapine administration caused decrease in GSH content but no effects on
GLR in controls and CSIS group. Data indicate that CSIS compromises
GSH-dependent redox system promoting oxidative stress in rat prefrontal
cortex which can’t be protected by clozapine. Moreover, clozapine
administration in controls has a harmful side effect on this redox system.

XRPD analysis showed that stoichiometry parameter delta, crystallite size/strain and lattice constant were only slightly affected by the method utilized. All ceria nanoparticles are nearly spherical in shape with faceted morphology, free of defects and with a relatively uniform size distribution. The average microstrain was found to be approximately 10 times higher than that of bulk counterpart. The absorption edge of nanocrystalline materials was shifted towards a higher wavelengths (red shift) in comparison with bulk counterpart, and band gap values were in the range 2.7-3.24 eV (3.33 eV for bulk counterpart).

AB - The 5-10 nnn Ce1-XEuXO2-delta (0 LT = x LT = 0.30) nanoparticles with fluorite structure were synthesized by thermal decomposition of Eu- and Ce-2,4-pentanedione complexes mixtures. X-ray line broadening analysis of mixed samples Ce1-XEuXO2-delta (0.05 LT = x LT = 0.30) showed that the crystallite size was lower and root mean square strain higher than in pure ceria. However, within mixed samples Ce1-XEuXO2-delta (0.05 LT = x LT = 0.30) crystallite size and root mean square strain were independent of Eu3+ concentration. Raman spectroscopy results indicated that europium ions yield disorder by breaking the phonon propagation and therefore making the non-centre Brillouin zone modes Raman active. The absorption bands in the spectra of mixed oxides were blue-shifted in comparison to pure CeO2-delta nanopowder. The samples show red emission typical for Eu ions. The biggest photoluminescent intensity was observed for the highest Eu3+ concentration (x = 0.30) and further enhanced with the increase in crystallinity.
