AB - Research advancements and opportunities by the FP7-ERA Chairs project MagBioVin are spotlighted.[1] Topic of the project is the design of different novel magnetic nanoarchitectures (e.g. bimagnetic and polymeric core-shell systems, nanoparticles embedded in mesoporous silica structures, and radiolabeled nanostructures)[2–4] for application in targeted treatment and diagnostics of cancer. These nanomaterials posses the ability for selective treatment of tumor tissues by the targeting with magnetic field.[5,6] Alternating magnetic field also provides the means for hyperthermia-induced cancer treatment.[7]Attachment of radionuclides to the synthesized nanoparticles is explored for the purpose of imaging and internal radiotherapy.[8,9] Magnetic characteristics of the prepared nanomaterials is done by SQUID magnetometry and Mössbauer spectroscopy. Structural characterization of the investigated nanomaterials is performed by XRD, TEM imaging, DRIFT spectroscopy, and nitrogen sorption analysis. Magnetic hyperthermia effects are monitored by using commercial setup (nB nanoScale Biomagnetics) which includes applicators for cell cultures and small animals. In vitro and in vivo (animal model) applicability of the synthesized nanomaterials regarding toxicity, biodistribution and anticancer efficacy is explored for targeted cancer treatment.

AB - The manuscript contains new measurements and calculations of magnetic susceptibility of Cr(III) and Fe(III) ions in hexaaqua-nitrate-trihydrate. The magnetic properties of the ion M=Cr(III), Fe(III) in hexaaqua-nitrate-trihydrate M(H2O)6(NO3)3·3H2O were studied from the temperature dependence of magnetic susceptibility determined using the SQUID susceptometer, within the temperature range 4 K ≤ T ≤ 290 K. The detected deviation from the CurieWeiss law is explained by the splitting of the ground state energies of the magnetic ions under the influence of the crystalline field (splitting in the zero field) and the contribution of the temperature independent Van-Vleck paramagnetism.

AB - The polycrystalline samples of TmxY2-xO3 (x = 0.1, 0.2, 0.4, 0.6, 1, 1.4, 1.8) were obtained by ceramic technology. X-ray diffraction data were collected and the crystal structures were refined by the Rietveld method, A random distribution of Tm3+ ions over two cationic sites, 8b and 24d, in the space group Ia (3) over bar was found. Magnetic susceptibility measurements of all samples were done using a SQUID susceptometer in a temperature range 4 K LT T LT 290 K, Above 90 K a Curie-Weiss law was observed, while below 90 K the inverse magnetic susceptibility deviates from linearity due to the crystal-held influence. Deduced effective magnetic moments are close to the free ion values. In the whole temperature range the susceptibility data were fitted in accordance with the axial symmetry approximation of the crystal field and corresponding values of the crystal-field energy levels were deduced. AB - Magnetic susceptibility of diluted magnetic semiconductor Hg1-xFexSe (x = 0.04, 0.08, 0.11) has been measured in the temperature range 50-300 K. Observed temperature dependence above 90 K is analyzed in terms of the high temperature expansion of the magnetic susceptibility developed for Fe-type diluted magnetic semiconductors. The nearest neighbour exchange constant is estimated as J(NN)/k(B) = (-11 +/- 3) K. At higher temperatures, considerable deviation of the magnetic susceptibility from the Curie-Weiss law is detected. AB - The low field AC magnetic susceptibility of Hg1-xFexSe (x = 0.045, 0.070 and 0.095) has been measured in the temperature range 12-150 K. Our experimental data as well as those reported earlier are compared with the extended nearest-neighbour pair approximation calculations taking into account the long-range antiferromagnetic exchange interaction between Fe2+ ions in the form J(R) = J(NN)/R-n. Good agreement is found between the theory and experiment with 11 K less than or equal to \J(NN)\ less than or equal to 15 K and n = 5.
