AB - The study discusses the validity of the law of similarity for the impulse breakdown of gases at low pressure and small inter-electrode distances. The research has been done theoretically, experimentally and numerically. The experiments were conducted under well-controlled laboratory conditions. The combined measurement uncertainty was less than 5%. The experiments were carried out with gases SF6, N2 and He. The electrodes were made of copper, but also of metals with different values of the work function. The obtained results are presented through the impulse characteristics for similar systems. Such a presentation only provided qualitative information. In order to obtain quantitative information, a modified Wilcoxon Rank Sum Test (U test) was performed. The obtained results show that the law of similarity is valid for the DC breakdown of gases, but it is not valid for the impulse breakdown of gases. It can be concluded that the law of similarity is inapplicable for the design of gas-insulated systems under low pressure at small values of the inter-electrode distance.

AB - The effect of gamma radiation on the reliable measurement of single voltage pulses of electron beam injectors into plasma during fusion experiments is considered in the manuscript. For this purpose, a 10 GHz fast voltage divider was constructed. The high-voltage capacitor was a gas condenser, and the low-voltage capacitor was a parallel connection of 10 mica capacitors. It turned out that the received radiation dose corrects the transmission ratio since it aligns the frequency characteristic of the mica in the area of spatial charge. This phenomenon has been explained from both a positive and a negative aspect with an effect on the concrete application. The need for further research on this problem was also pointed out to establish a saturation dose and thus obtain a constant frequency characteristic of the mica. The interest in the fast-divider behavior in the neutron field is also highlighted. © 2020 Informa UK Limited, trading as Taylor & Francis Group.

AB - The aim of this paper is to examine the energy and angular responses of thermoluminescent (LiF:Mg,Ti and LiF:Mg,Cu,P) and optically stimulated luminescent (Al2O3:C) dosimeters with experimental measurements and Monte Carlo simulations. Nine radiation qualities, with mean energies ranging from 33 keV to 1.25 MeV, and five angles of incidence, between 0° and 80°, were used to conduct this analysis. The IEC 62387:2020 international radiation protection standard was used as the dosimeter response measure of quality. The experimental and simulated data exhibit that the dosimeter responses meet the standard's criteria, with certain exceptions on lower energies.

AB - Growing concern for radiological and nuclear safety and growing use of radiation protection instruments by both professionals and lay persons increase the need for low cost and reliable instrumentation. The aim of this work was to develop a radiation protection instrument that will be both affordable to the widest radiation protection community, including the citizen networks and provide metrologically sound data. The instrument was based on a Geiger-Muller tube, which was tested before and after the energy compensation by lead foils. Instrument energy, angular and dose rate dependence was determined for different tube compensations and the optimum compensation allowing full compliance with relevant standards was identified. © 2019 Elsevier Ltd

AB - The aim of this paper is to examine the energy and angular responses of thermoluminescent dosimeters containing either MTS-N (LiF:Mg,Ti) or MCP-N (LiF:Mg,Cu,P) detector materials, and of the InLight optically stimulated luminescent dosimeters containing Al2O3:C detectors. Ten radiation qualities, with mean energies ranging from 24 keV to 1.25 MeV, and five angles of incidence, between 0° and 80°, were used for this purpose. The dosimeter response measure of quality were the IEC 62387 requirements. The experimental results show that the MTS-N-based and the InLight dosimeters performed in line with the standard's criteria. On the other hand, the MCP-N-based dosimeters exhibited a pronounced under-response around the energy of 120 keV, which resulted in deviations from the standard's conditions for both the energy and angular responses. © 2019 Elsevier Ltd

AB - Following the requirements of radiation protection international standards, passive dosimetry systems are type tested, which includes the angular dependence. As it represents one of the most important dosimeter characteristics, the angular dependence of commercially available optically stimulated luminescent dosimeters has been examined in this paper. The empirically determined air kerma to the personal dose equivalent conversion coefficients decrease as the angle of incidence increases. It was anticipated that the dosimeter response would show a similar behavior. This expectation has been confirmed for all the used angles of incidence and energies of the primary X-ray beam, except for the 80° angle of incidence and the 33 keV and 48 keV mean photon energies, where an increase in the angular response has been observed.

AB - —Survey meters represent common radiation protection instruments used for ambient monitoring. They estimate the effective dose of occupationally exposed personnel, by measuring the ambient dose equivalent. A performance testing of a Geiger-Müller tube-based survey meter was realized in this paper. The energy and the dose rate dependence were determined for different thicknesses of lead tube wrappings, in order to achieve the optimal energy compensation. The energy response for higher-energy photons slightly improved by applying these filters, while it significantly worsened for low-energy X-rays. The angular dependence was tested in terms of angular response and its symmetry for different radiation qualities.

AB - Determination of the angular dependence of thermoluminescent (TL) and optically stimulated luminescent (OSL) dosimeters is of great importance for their application in poly-energetic multidirectional photon radiation fields. In order to determine the angular dependence of the dosimeter responses for different photon energies, the dosimeters were mounted on an ISO water slab phantom, irradiated in two narrow beam X-ray qualities (N-40 and N-80) and in one gamma ray quality (S-Cs), defined in IAEA SRS 16. The angles of incidence ranged from 0° to 60°, with an increment of 20°. Two types of TL dosimeters were used: MTS-N (LiF:Mg,Ti) and MCP-N (LiF:Mg,Cu,P) and one type of OSL dosimeters, InLight (Al2O3:C). The two types of TL dosimeters have shown a similar deviation from their 0° responses for all the used radiation qualities, while the OSL dosimeters have shown a greater deviation from the reference values for the gamma radiation quality.

AB - Prior to performing calibrations in the Secondary Standard Dosimetry Laboratory (SSDL), standard radiation qualities must be determined in order to accurately assess the absorbed dose of occupationally exposed personnel and to evaluate the performance of radiation measurement instruments. Due to the energy dependence of the calibration factor and the air kerma to the personal dose equivalent conversion factor, it is of great importance to properly establish standard radiation qualities. Radiation qualities can be characterized by determining their photon energy distributions, or by using the Xray tube voltage and the first and second half-value layers. In this paper, the half-value layers were determined by varying the thicknesses of the additional filtration absorbers. The calculated values show a deviation from the ISO standard values not greater than 6%.

rezultati nivoa radioaktivne kontaminacije površina i merenja jačine ambijentalnog
ekvivalenta doze gama zračenja na 15 cm od podloge.
AB - In the process of the production of phosphoric acid, a technological process increases
the presence of natural radioactivity, therefore, the former plant for the production of
phosphoric acid, presents the so-called "historical pollution", and as such represents a
potential threat in terms of unnecessary exposure to radiation.
In the framework of the decontamination of the old plan, radiological characterization
of the plant was carried out before, during and after the decontamination process,
which involved the removal of a non-fixed contamination on all surfaces and objects
that have been found in the plant. Radiological characterization present the good base
for determining of adequate ways of decontamination, as well as to verify its
effectiveness. The paper presents the results of the level of radioactive contamination of
the surface and measurements of the intensity of ambient dose equivalent at 15 cm from
the surfaces.

AB - Manipulation of unsealed radiation sources in nuclear medicine (NM) departments involves non-uniform exposure to staff and high skin doses to the upper extremities from direct and scattered radiations. Conducted studies have shown that the annual dose limits could be exceeded and the continuous dose monitoring of NM workers hands is needed. The aim of this article is to show results of hand dose monitoring in terms of operational quantity H-p(0.07) for occupationally exposed NM workers to beta and gamma radiations in the largest NM centre in Serbia. Dose assessment was done by means of thermoluminescent ring dosemeters DXT-RAD (LiF:Mg,Ti). Monthly and annual doses were evaluated for a 5-y period (2010-14). Monitored NM staff was categorised according to the type of work, as nurses, radiographers, laboratory technicians and radiochemists. Performed evaluation showed that annual hand doses were within the annual limit for all staff categories, but further optimisation of working practice is needed.

AB - Determination of the response of thermoluminescent and electronic personal dosimeters as a function of photon energy and angle of incidence has a crucial impact on their application in poly-energetic multidirectional photon radiation fields. In the experimental part of this paper, in order to determine the energy dependence of the dosimeter responses, the dosimeters were mounted on an ISO slab phantom, irradiated in X and gamma ray fields, defined in the IAEA SRS 16, within the energy range of 33 keV - 1,25 MeV. Tested dosimeters have not shown an adequate response in the low photon energies relative to their Cs-137 responses, while in the middle and high energy photon ranges they performed well and have shown a deviation relative to their Cs-137 responses up to ±20%. In order to determine the angular dependence of the dosimeters the N-200 narrow beam radiation quality has been used. The angles of incidence for which the dosimeters were tested range from 0° to 80°, with an increment of 20°. Most of the dosimeters have behaved as expected, except for certain dosimeters due to their significant increase in response caused by the influence of the scattered radiation.

AB - A method for approximate analytical solution of transport equation for particles in plane geometry is developed by solving Fredholm integral equations. Kernels of these equations are the Greens functions for infinite media treated approximately. Analytical approximation of Greens function is based on decomposition of the functions into terms that are exactly analytically solved and those which are approximately obtained by usual low order DPN approximation. Transport of particles in half-space is treated, and reflection coefficient is determined in the form of an analytical function. Comparison with the exact numerical solution and other approximate methods justified the proposed analytical technique.

AB - This work presents the results of an investigation undertaken to determine the level of natural radioactivity in the traditional building materials used for medieval indoor vaulted constructions in the territory of the central Balkan region. Indoor radiation exposure varies appreciably if it comes from the earth building materials, hence the presence of natural radioisotopes of Ra-226, Th-232, and K-40 in masonry vaulted constructions was analyzed using gamma ray spectrometry. In addition, the internal health hazard index, the absorbed dose rates and the effective annual doses were calculated. The results were then compared both with the reported data from the previous studies concerning the territory of the Balkan Peninsula, as well as with the worldwide values for the materials of historic buildings. The results obtained from the materials examined in this paper all showed the radioactivity levels below the maximum permitted values.

AB - This paper investigates the output characteristics of photovoltaic solar cells working in hostile working conditions. Examined cells, produced by different innovative procedures, are available in the market. The goal was to investigate stability of electric characteristics of solar cells, which are used today in photovoltaic solar modules for charging rechargeable batteries which, coupled with batteries, supply various electronic systems such as radio repeaters on mountains tops, airplanes, mobile communication stations and other remote facilities. Charging of rechargeable batteries requires up to 25 % higher voltage compared to nominal output voltage of the battery. This paper presents results of research of solar cells, which also apply to cases in which continuous power supply is required.

AB - The calculation and design of radiation protection shielding should be based on the interactions that characterize the passage of various types of radiation through the material to draw conclusions about the passage of particles or quanta of radiation through absorbers of different thickness, geometry, made of different materials. This paper examines the validity of the exponential law of attenuation for a beam of gamma radiation, depending on the thickness and type of material of the absorber. Aluminium and lead were used as absorbers. Experimental data showed a range of values of the surface density and the thickness of the absorber in which the exponential law of attenuation of gamma rays can be applied in the narrow-beam geometry, as well as the range of values of the surface density and the thickness of the absorber where it is necessary to include the build-up factor.

AB - This study investigates the effects of neutron radiation on I-V characteristics (current dependance on voltage) of commercial optoelectronic devices (silicon photodiodes, phototransistors, and solar panels). Current-voltage characteristics of the samples were measured at room temperature before and after irradiation. The diodes were irradiated using Am-Be neutron source with neutron emission of 2.7 x 10(6) n/s. The results showed a decrease in photocurrent for all samples which could be due to the existence of neutron-induced displacement defects introduced into the semiconductor lattice. The process of annealing has also been observed. A comparative analysis of measurement results has been performed in order to determine the reliability of optoelectronic devices in radiation environments.

AB - This paper examines the effects of irradiating indium oxide films of nanoscale thickness by ion beams, when these films are in the Cooper-pair insulator state. Radiation effects are predicted on the basis of Monte Carlo simulations of ion transport. Results of numerical experiments are interpreted within the theoretical model of a Cooper-pair insulator. The study suggests that radiation-induced changes in InOx films exposed to ion beams could significantly alter their current-voltage characteristics and that a transition to a metallic state is possible, due to radiation-induced perturbation of the fine-tuned granular structure. Furthermore, incident and displaced ions can break up enough Cooper pairs in InOx films to cause dissolution of this specific insulating state.

AB - Cooper-pair insulators are materials that exhibit superconducting behavior, but under specific conditions, regarding film thickness, bias voltage, applied magnetic field, and presence of magnetic impurities, act as insulators with thermally activated Cooper pairs as charge carriers. This paper investigates possible radiation effects in thin films of such materials. Radiation effects are predicted on the basis of Monte Carlo simulations, using 2D Josephson junction array as a model of material structure. Results of a combined theoretical and numerical analysis suggest that radiation-induced change of the Josephson junction charging energy could significantly affect the current-voltage characteristics of a Cooper-pair insulator, and that a transition to a metallic state is possible, due to radiation-induced disruption of the fine-tuned granular structure. The breaking of Cooper pairs, caused by incident and displaced ions, can also destroy the conditions for this specific insulating state to exist.

AB - This paper investigates the conditions for the applicability of the geometrical similarity law to impulse breakdown in gases, using statistical methods necessitated by the stochastic nature of the impulse breakdown voltage. Theoretical analysis in the paper is accompanied by experimental results obtained for geometrically similar systems, i.e. for systems with equal shapes of the macroscopic and microscopic electrical field. The experiments were conducted in controlled laboratory conditions, for a wide range of gas pressure and inter-electrode gap values. Two-electrode systems were used, with both homogeneous and non-homogeneous electrical fields, utilizing SF(6), N(2) and He gases as insulators. Standard lightning and switching voltage impulses were applied, as well as ramp-shaped impulses with different slopes. On the basis of the statistical processing of the obtained experimental results, conclusions regarding the conditions for the applicability of the geometrical similarity law to impulse breakdown in gases are drawn.

AB - This paper compares the reliability of standard commercial Erasable Programmable Read Only Memory (EPROM) and Electrically Erasable Programmable Read Only Memory ((EPROM)-P-2) components exposed to gamma rays. Results obtained for CMOS-based EPROM (NM27C010) and (EPROM)-P-2 (NM93CS46) components provide evidence that EPROMs have a greater radiation hardness than (EPROMs)-P-2. Moreover, the changes in EPROMs are reversible, and after erasure and reprogramming all EPROM components restore their functionality. On the other hand, changes in (EPROMs)-P-2 are irreversible. The obtained results are analyzed and interpreted on the basis of gamma ray interaction with the CMOS structure.

AB - The wide-spread use of semiconductor and gas-filled diodes for non-linear over-voltage protection results in a variety of possible working conditions. It is therefore essential to have a thorough insight into their reliability in exploitation environments which imply exposure to ionizing radiation. The aim of this paper is to investigate the influence of irradiation on over-voltage diode characteristics by exposing the diodes to californium-252 combined neutron/gamma radiation field. The irradiation of semiconductor over-voltage diodes causes severe degradation of their protection characteristics. On the other hand, gas-filled over-voltage diodes exhibit a temporal improvement of performance. The results are presented with the accompanying theoretical interpretations of the observed changes in over-voltage diode behaviour, based on the interaction of radiation with materials constituting the diodes.
