AB  - Purpose:Even though various types of scaffolds have been used lately as a complement to microfracture, the exact mechanism of reported cartilage repair improvement when using scaffolds is still unclear. In this study, an effort has been made to identify the specific effects that scaffolds may have on the cells of reparation when using this technique.Methods:A 3‑D model in vitro, representing microfracture and containing both chondrocytes and bone marrow‑derived cells in different experimental conditions was made, and the cells were cultured for eight weeks. Subse‑quently, the constructs containing our 3‑D model were removed from the cell culture medium, fixed in paraffin and analyzed with immunohistochemistry.Results:Bone marrow – derived cells migrated to the upper compartment of the construct through a perforated nylon membrane containing both enzymatically digested‑ and non‑digested particulated cartilage. The histological sections were stained with hematoxylin, eosin, S‑100, SOX‑9, Gomori, and procollagen type I and II. When minced cartilage wasn’t pretreated with collagenase, exclusively bone‑derived cells have created new extracellular matrix as showed by the histological analysis.Conclusions:In this model of microfracture, bone‑derived cells but not chondrocytes have shown to have an active role in new cartilage formation without predigestion with collagenase. Moreover, it seems that the addition of a chitosan‑based scaffold may lead to the improvement of a new cartilage matrix synthesis and integration. This effect hasn’t been seen without the use of scaffold or when a fibrin‑ or a collagen‑based scaffold have been used.

Flexible and high-efficiency Sb2S3/solid carrier solar cell at low light intensity

AB  - Producing green and efficient energy sources is a major challenge. As a consequence, the use of photovoltaic devices for conversion of light into electricity is growing worldwide. A lot of effort had been invested to create high-efficient solar cells, but their durability, stability, flexibility and efficiency at low light intensities are still unexplored. Here, we built a flexible solar cell made of p-doped, amorphized a-undoped and n-doped Sb2S3 solid carrier loaded with electrolyte. Indium tin oxide glass was the working electrode, and aluminium was the counter electrode. Every (p-a-n) flexible Sb2S3/solid carrier layers were obtained using a cheap casting/solvent evaporation technique, from a blend consisted of chitosan, polyethylene glycol and electrolyte containing 0.5 M potassium iodide and 0.05 M iodine, and corresponding synthesized amorphized a-undoped and p and n-doped Sb2S3 semiconductor. Results show that flexible Sb2S3 solar cell possesses good stability and efficiency of about 10% at 5% sun. Overall, our findings demonstrate for the first time that flexible solar cell can be made and used for low light intensity applications.

AB  - We present here a novel solar cell made of ITO/composite p-doped Sb2S3 + P3HT + PANI + TiO2/amorphous Sb2S3+P3HT+PANI+TiO2/n-doped Sb2S3 + P3HT + PANI + TiO2/solid carrier/aluminum as counter electrode. With spraying technique, the layers were deposited and the thickness of films was 1m. A new solid carrier of electrolyte was a blend consisted of chitosan (low MW), polyethylene glycol and electrolyte. X-ray diffraction was recorded to confirm the amorphous nature of the blend. Information about the surface appearance and roughness of a solid carrier dry and soaked in the electrolyte was given by atomic force microscopy. The solar cell was examined at very low and low light intensity (5% and 35% of sun, respectively), and at standard test conditions (100% of sun) using different light sources. The whole cell surface was 7.5cm(2) while the illuminated part was 3cm(2). Obtained results expressed for the illuminated surface showed the highest efficiency of 23.1% at 5% of sun while the efficiency of the cell was 2.9% at 35% of sun and only 0.75% at intensity of 100% of sun.

AB  - To produce well-defined metal clusters stabilized in protective matrix, poly(N-isopropylacrylamide) (PNi-PAAm) hydrogel with different initial concentration of polymer was used as nanoreactor. The in situ synthesis of well dispersed silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) was performed by gamma irradiation. The obtained AgNPs are spherical in shape with the diameter less than 20 nm. Crystalline properties of nanoparticles such as size, texture coefficient, strain, stress, lattice parameter, d-spacing, and dislocation density have been calculated using XRD data. Results confirm that the changes of lattice parameter of crystalline AgNPs sensitively reflect their state of strain and stress depending on the formation conditions (i.e., on the concentration of PNiPAAm) and on the diameter of AgNPs. The negative lattice strain and compression stress were observed for the smaller AgNPs (lattice contraction), while for the larger AgNPs are positively strained and under tensile stress (lattice expansion). XPS spectra revealed the donor-acceptor type of interaction between carbonyl oxygen from PNiPAAm and AgNPs (positive shift of high BE component of O 1s and negative shift of Ag 3d BE). The greater dislocation density of smaller AgNPs incorporated in more concentrated PNiPAAm, resulted in more binding sites and stronger interaction with polymer. AB  - Monitoring bromides (Br-) is of crucial importance since bromates, potential human carcinogens, are formed during ozonation of water containing bromides in concentrations GT 100 mu gL(-1). Within this study, silver (Ag) and four carbon-supported Ag catalysts were synthesized by the gamma-radiation method and their morphology and structure examined using transmission electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction, and UV-Vis analysis. The nanocatalysts were tested for Br- sensing in aqueous media using cyclic voltammetry. All five Ag materials exhibited electroactivity for sensing of Br- ions, with pure Ag catalyst giving the best response to Br- ions presence in terms of the lowest limit of detection. Sensing of bromides was also explored in tap water after addition of bromides suggesting that herein prepared catalysts could be used for bromides detection in real samples. Furthermore, sensing of other halogen ions, namely, chlorides and iodides, was examined, and response due to chloride presence was recorded.

AB  - This  work  describes  the  Au-PVA  hydrogel  nanocomposites  synthesized  by radiolytic in   situincorporation   of   gold   nanoparticles   (Au   NPs)   into poly(vinyl  alcohol)  (PVA)  hydrogel.  Synthesis  of  nanocomposites  was conducted  as  two-step  gamma  irradiation  induced  process.  In  the  first  step, the  crosslinking  of  polymer  chains  occurs  and  PVA  hydrogel  with  a  large number  of  pores  was  obtained.  In  the  second  step,  these  pores  serve  as nanoreactors  for  the  formation  of  Au  NPs.  The  presence  of  Au  NPs  was confirmed   by   absorption   spectra,   while   morphological   and   structural analysis reveals the spherical shape of Au NPs, with the diameter around 15 nm  and fcccrystal  structure.  The  structural  parameters  of  xerogels  indicate that  incorporation  of  Au  NPs  induce  the  expansion  of  polymer  network. Long-time  stability  of  Au-PVA  hydrogel  nanocomposites  is  caused  by interactions between the surface of Au NPs and OH groups of PVA chains.

AB  - Carbon-supported silver nanoparticles (Ag:NPs/C) were synthesized by gamma irradiation-induced reduction method using the poly(vinyl alcohol) or poly(vinyl alcohol)/chitosan polymer as stabilizer. Prepared samples were characterized using transmission electron microscopy and X-ray diffractometry. Subsequently, Ag:NPs/C were studied using rotating disc and rotating ring disc method as electrocatalysts for ORR (oxygen reduction reaction) and BOR (borohydride oxidation reaction) for potential application in alkaline fuel cells. The synthesis method used herein offers simple and fast approach for catalytic ink preparation, since the ink is prepared in one-step radiation process, simultaneously with Ag+ ions reduction. Very high and stable catalytic efficiency toward ORR via 4e(-) path was evidenced during 4000 square pulse polarization cycles. BOR, accompanied with the simultaneous borohydride ion hydrolysis, was found to proceed at the oxidized Ag surface. (C) 2016 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

AB  - Combined ATLAS and CMS measurements of the Higgs boson production and decay rates, as well as constraints on its couplings to vector bosons and fermions, are presented. The combination is based on the analysis of five production processes, namely gluon fusion, vector boson fusion, and associated production with a W or a Z boson or a pair of top quarks, and of the six decay modes H - GT ZZ; WW, gamma gamma; tau tau; bb, and mu mu. All results are reported assuming a value of 125: 09 GeV for the Higgs boson mass, the result of the combined measurement by the ATLAS and CMS experiments. The analysis uses the CERN LHC proton-proton collision data recorded by the ATLAS and CMS experiments in 2011 and 2012, corresponding to integrated luminosities per experiment of approximately 5 fb(-1) at root s = 7TeV and 20 fb(-1) at root s = 8TeV. The Higgs boson production and decay rates measured by the two experiments are combined within the context of three generic parameterisations: two based on cross sections and branching fractions, and one on ratios of coupling modifiers. Several interpretations of the measurements with more model-dependent parameterisations are also given. The combined signal yield relative to the Standard Model prediction is measured to be 1.09 +/- 0.11. The combined measurements lead to observed significances for the vector boson fusion production process and for the H - GT tau tau decay of 5.4 and 5.5 standard deviations, respectively. The data are consistent with the Standard Model predictions for all parameterisations considered.

The analysis uses the CERN LHC proton-proton collision data recorded by the ATLAS and CMS experiments in 2011 and 2012, corresponding to integrated luminosities per experiment of approximately 5 fb(-1) at root s = 7TeV and 20 fb(-1) at root s = 8TeV. The Higgs boson production and decay rates measured by the two experiments are combined within the context of three generic parameterisations: two based on cross sections and branching fractions, and one on ratios of coupling modifiers. Several interpretations of the measurements with more model-dependent parameterisations are also given. The combined signal yield relative to the Standard Model prediction is measured to be 1.09 +/- 0.11. The combined measurements lead to observed significances for the vector boson fusion production process and for the H - GT tau tau decay of 5.4 and 5.5 standard deviations, respectively. The data are consistent with the Standard Model predictions for all parameterisations considered.",

The results are compared to different predictions of leading order and next-to-leading order perturbative quantum chromodynamics matrix elements supplemented with models for parton-showers and hadronization.

AB  - Two series of nanocrystalline brookite-type powders have been synthesized by using combined sal gel hydrothermal method with titanium tetrachloride (TiCI4) as a precursor and hydrothermal temperature and reaction time varied in the range of 120-200 degrees C and 12-48 h, respectively. The effects of chosen synthesis parameters on structural, morphological and optical properties of synthesized powders have been investigated by the XRPD, SEM, EDS and BET measurements, as well Raman spectroscopy and spectroscopic ellipsometry. The XRPD results have shown that pure brookite phase, with mean crystallite size of -33 nm, has been obtained only in the sample synthesized at 200 degrees C, after 24 h of hydrothermal process. In all other samples anatase phase also appears, whereas rutile and sodium titanate phases have been noticed in the samples synthesized at lower temperatures. The presence of different titania phases has also been confirmed and analyzed by Raman scattering measurements. The SEM measurements have shown spindle-like particles in brookite-rich samples synthesized at 200 degrees C, whereas BET measurements have detected mesoporous structure in these samples. The properties of synthesized powders have been correlated to their photocatalytic efficiency, tested in degradation of alprazolam, one of the 5th generation benzodiazepines. The sample consisted of pure brookite has shown the highest efficiency in the photodegradation of alprazolam, practically equal to the activity of Degussa P25. (C) 2015 Elsevier B.V. P(NiPAAm/IA) copolymer hydrogel matrices have been previously synthesized by radiation induced copolymerization. The copolymer composition was determined by elemental analysis of the dried gels, and was found to be close to that of the feed. The dependence of swelling properties and phase transitions on the IA comonomer content, temperature, pH values and presence of AgNPs were investigated. The hydrogels showed both thermo- and pH responses. By introducing small amounts of IA, swelling capacity increase, and the volume phase transition temperature (VPIT) of P(NiPAAm/IA) copolymers is transferred to higher values. Presence of AgNPs causes decrease of equilibrium swelling degree and VPIT, and allows of fine-tuning of these properties. Both the average values of compressive elastic modulus and Youngs modulus of elasticity were decreased by addition of IA as a consequence of looser structure of the network (increase in molar mass between two neighboring crosslinks and decrease in effective crosslinking density). The introduction of AgNPs promoted not only improvement of these mechanical parameters, but an improvement of stress at failure especially in the systems with the highest content of IA. In addition, Ag-P(NiPAAm/IA) hydrogel nanocomposites showed good antibacterial potentials. (C) 2015 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

In the chiral limit with a branching ratio of 100% for the decay B - GT Wt, the observed (expected) 95% C.L. lower limit on the vectorlike B mass is 810 GeV (760 GeV). In the case where the vectorlike B quark has branching ratio values corresponding to those of an SU(2) singlet state, the observed (expected) 95% C.L. lower limit on the vectorlike B mass is 640 GeV (505 GeV). AB  - Results of a search for new phenomena in final states with an energetic jet and large missing transverse momentum are reported. The results are translated into exclusion limits on models with either large extra spatial dimensions, pair production of weakly interacting dark matter candidates, or production of very light gravitinos in a gauge-mediated supersymmetric model. In addition, limits on the production of an invisibly decaying Higgs-like boson leading to similar topologies in the final state are presented.

AB  - Commercially available ZnO powder was mechanically activated in a planetary ball mill. In order to investigate the specific surface area, pore volume and microstructure of non-activated and mechanically activated ZnO powders the authors performed N-2 physisorption, SEM and TEM. Crystallite size and lattice microstrain were analyzed by X-ray diffraction method. XRD patterns indicate that peak intensities are getting lower and expend with activation time. The reduction in crystallite size and increasing of lattice microstrain with prolonged milling time were determined applying the Rietvelds method. The difference between non-activated and the activated powder has been also observed by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). XPS is used for investigating the chemical bonding of ZnO powder by analyzing the energy of photoelectrons. The lattice vibration spectra were obtained using Raman spectroscopy. In Raman spectra some changes along with atypical resonant scattering were noticed, which were caused by mechanical activation. (C) 2015 Published by Elsevier B.V.

AB  - This paper describes the concept, technical realisation and validation of a largely data-driven method to model events with Z - GT tau tau decays. In Z - GT mu mu events selected from proton-proton collision data recorded at root s = 8 TeV with the ATLAS experiment at the LHC in 2012, the Z decay muons are replaced by tau leptons from simulated Z - GT tau tau decays at the level of reconstructed tracks and calorimeter cells. The tau lepton kinematics are derived from the kinematics of the original muons. Thus, only the well-understood decays of the Z boson and tau leptons as well as the detector response to the tau decay products are obtained from simulation. All other aspects of the event, such as the Z boson and jet kinematics as well as effects from multiple interactions, are given by the actual data. This so-called tau-embedding method is particularly relevant for Higgs boson searches and analyses in tau tau final states, where Z - GT tau tau decays constitute a large irreducible background that cannot be obtained directly from data control samples. In this paper, the relevant concepts are discussed based on the implementation used in the ATLAS Standard Model H - GT tau tau analysis of the full datataset recorded during 2011 and 2012.

The affected correction factors were recomputed using the Pythia 6.427 generator. These corrections are applied as baseline to the NLO pQCD calculations and thus the central values of the theoretical predictions have changed by a few percent with the new corrections. This has a minor impact on the agreement between the data and the theoretical predictions. Figures 2 and 6 to 13, and all the tables have been updated with the new values. A few sentences in the discussion in sections 5.2 and 9 were altered or removed.

AB  - Results of a search for new phenomena in events with large missing transverse momentum and a Higgs boson decaying to two photons are reported. Data from proton-proton collisions at a center-of-mass energy of 8 TeV and corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 20.3 fb(-1) have been collected with the ATLAS detector at the LHC. The observed data are well described by the expected standard model backgrounds. Upper limits on the cross section of events with large missing transverse momentum and a Higgs boson candidate are also placed. Exclusion limits are presented for models of physics beyond the standard model featuring dark-matter candidates.

Above 60 GeV, R-AA is consistent with a plateau at a centrality-dependent value, within the uncertainties. The value is 0.55 +/- 0.01(stat.) +/- 0.04(syst.) in the most central collisions. The R-AA distribution is consistent with flat vertical bar eta vertical bar dependence over the whole transverse momentum range in all centrality classes.

AB  - Measurements of differential cross sections for J/psi production in p + Pb collisions at root S-NN= 5.02 TeV at the CERN Large Hadron Collider with the ATLAS detector are presented. The data set used corresponds to an integrated luminosity of 28.1 nb(-1). The J/psi mesons are reconstructed in the dimuon decay channel over the transverse momentum range 8 LT PT LT 30 GeV and over the center-of-mass rapidity range -2.87 LT y* LT 1.94. Prompt J/psi are separated from J/psi resulting from b-hadron decays through an analysis of the distance between the J/psi decay vertex and the event primary vertex. The differential cross section for production of nonprompt J/psi is compared to a FONLL calculation that does not include nuclear effects. Forward-backward production ratios are presented and compared to theoretical predictions. These results complement previously published results by covering a region of higher transverse momentum and more central rapidity. They thus constrain the kinematic dependence of nuclear modifications of charmonium and b-quark production in p + Pb collisions.
