AB - Metal–organic frameworks (MOFs) are a class of materials that are increasingly used for the detection and separation of gases. This article presents the influence of gamma radiation on the dielectric properties of a LDPE/ZIF-8 composite that can be used for the production of gas sensors and massive gas absorbers. A low-density polyethylene (LDPE)–microsized zeolitic imidazolate framework-8 (ZIF-8) composite, obtained by melt mixing (95/5 weight ratio), was gamma-irradiated at room temperature to different absorbed doses up to 300 kGy. Infrared spectroscopy and optical microscopy confirmed the degradation of the ZIF-8 due to the gamma irradiation. The AC conductivity (admittance) of the samples was studied in the frequency range of 24 Hz − 120 kHz and a temperature range 200–350 K. The composite showed larger admittance components relative to the admittance components of pure LDPE; the conductance of the samples increased almost linearly with increasing irradiation dose. On the other hand, the change in dielectric permittivity of the LDPE and the composite due to irradiation was weak and showed nonlinear behavior with increasing radiation dose.

AB - This study provides a new insight into the relationships between absorption and adsorption processes that occur during the treatment of iPP in aqueous solutions of metal-chloride salts, as well as the impact of these processes on the electrical conductivity of this nonpolar polymer. The polypropylene films (0.5 mm) were exposed to three-day treatments in aqueous solutions of chlorine salts of some alkali and transition metals at temperatures of 22 °C and 80 °C. The treatments induced an increase in the electrical conductivity of iPP, up to 800%. DC conductivity is not directly proportional to the concentrations of metals in the treated films due to the complex relationships between diffusion and adsorption processes. The experiment was set up to simulate the real-world conditions and the study provides practical knowledge on the stability of the electrical conductivity of iPP under exposure to aqueous solutions. The influence of electric aging on the electrical conductivity of the treated films was also examined.

AB - The article describes the influence of humidity on the surface photodielectric properties of papers prepared from poly(ethyleneimine)-TiO2 hanoparticles-anthocyanin modified cellulose fibres. The anthocyanins were extracted from purple cabbage, beet-root, plum peel, red wine and red currant juice. The samples were conditioned to various relative humidities (from 9 to 100%) and illuminated with white visible light, lambda GT = 405 nm. The poly(ethyleneimine)-TiO2-anthocyanin modified samples showed similar photodielectric behaviour that can be clearly distinguished from the samples modified solely with poly(ethyleneimine)-TiO2. Generally, an increase in humidity enhances the conductivity of the samples and induces an increase in the amount of photo-induced charge. Also, at higher humidities (above 80%), the samples with anthocyanin showed significantly higher values of photo-induced charges with respect to anthocyanin free samples. The presented results suggest that the presence of water molecules promotes electron-injection processes from the anthocyanin to the semiconductor surface. (C) 2017 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

AB - This paper reports on the presence of wax and radiation-induced crosslinking on the morphology, thermal and mechanical properties, as well as electrical conductivity and thermo-switch properties of LDPE containing different amounts of carbon black (CB) or carbon black plus zinc metal as filler. Although the filler was generally well dispersed in the polymer or polymer/wax blend, there were clear indications of the formation of conductive pathways. Different combinations of polymer, wax, CB and zinc filler and radiation induced crosslinking gave rise to different extents of crystallinity and/or chain immobilization, which had an influence on the mechanical and thermo-mechanical properties, and on the electrical conductivity and thermo-switch behaviour. Most importantly, the presence of wax, and CB and CB/Zn fillers, gave rise to increased electrical conductivity. The thermal expansion in the composites did not seem to play a significant role in obtaining larger values of the positive temperature coefficient of resistivity (PTC). We found that the presence of a small amount of paraffin wax significantly increased the PTC coefficients of the LDPE based conductive composites, and that gamma-radiation induced crosslinking provided the thermo-mechanical stability of the amorphous regions in LDPE needed to obtain a high PTC intensity, which would provide a cheap material with good thermo-switch functionality, which is something not observed before.

AB - Ethylene-co-vinyl acetate/iron nanocomposite films were fabricated by implantation with multiple charged ions at different fluencies. The films obtained with ion fluency of 1 x 10(17) cm(-2) were used for specific studies. It was found that spherical similar to 1.5 nm diameter nanoparticles were formed upon implantation. They were clustered into a single 80 nm wide strip about 40 nm beneath the film surface. The magnetic measurements of the film showed that the particles exhibit superparamagnetic behavior with a blocking temperature below 5K. A second type of the samples was also prepared with ion fluency of 1 x 10(17) cm(-2), but prior to implantation, the iron was evaporated onto the co-polymer surface. A nanocomposite film of different morphology was obtained upon the implantation and the particles were much smaller (-0.8 nm). The magnetic behavior of both the films was that of isolated nanoparticles, despite the high ion fluency of 1 x 10(17) cm(-2). (C) 2016 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

AB - Biocompatible fluorescent nanostructures were prepared by a functionalization of gold nanoparticles with the amino acid tryptophan. The gold-tryptophan bioconjugates were investigated by TEM and HRTEM and various spectroscopy methods (XPS, FTIR, UV-vis and photoluminescence). It was found that the gold nanoparticles, initially 8 nm in diameter, aggregate in the presence of the amino acid. From the XPS and FTIR spectroscopy results, it was concluded that the tryptophan gold interactions mainly take place via indole and carboxyl groups. Although the indole group is involved in the interaction with the gold surfaces, the tryptophan-gold hybrids showed strong fluorescence due to the presence of multilayers of tryptophan. Deep ultra violet (DUV) imaging performed at the SOLEIL synchrotron showed that It is possible to detect these hybrid nanostructures within Escherichia coli cells. (c) 2015 Elsevier B.V. AB - Electrical AC conductivity of semiconducting low-density polyethylene (LDPE)-carbon black (CB) composites has been studied in the frequency range between 24 Hz and 75 kHz and the temperature range from 295 to 355 K. The composites were gamma irradiated at room temperature to different absorbed doses up to 300 kGy. The effects of gamma irradiation on the AC conductivity at room temperature and the conductive temperature coefficients (CTC) were observed. It was found that the effect of gamma irradiation on the stability of AC conductivity at elevated temperature (355 K) is dependent on the carbon black content and the gamma irradiation dose. AB - The aim of this study was to investigate the presence of wax, different Ag nanoparticle contents, and different cooling rates from the melt, on the morphology, thermal and electrical conductivity, and dynamic mechanical properties of iPP. The Ag particles were well dispersed in the polymer, and formed nucleation centres for the crystallization of iPP. They were also well dispersed in iPP/wax, but they were located in the wax phase which was dispersed between the iPP spherulites. Generally the extent of filler agglomeration increased with increasing filler content. The Ag particles, whether in the iPP or wax phase, had little influence on the crystallinities and melting temperatures of iPP. The presence of Ag particles in iPP had little influence on its modulus, but the presence of both wax and Ag particles significantly improved the modulus of these nanocomposites. The thermal and electrical conductivities of the samples more significantly improved when both wax and Ag were present. With increasing Ag particle contents in both iPP/Ag and iPP/wax/Ag, the thermal conductivities increased, but leveled off at higher filler contents, while the electrical conductivities continuously increased with increasing filler contents. The slowly cooled samples had higher crystallinities than the quenched samples and therefore they were more thermally conductive than the quenched samples.

AB - Nanocomposites of polyvinylidene fluoride/polymethyl methacrylate (PVDF/PMMA) blend and mechanically activated barium titanate (BaTiO3) particles were prepared by melt mixing. Modification of filler by means of mechanical activation has a profound effect on the crystallization of PVDF in the blend matrix. Raman analysis showed that the modified BaTiO3 particles, due to higher specific surfaces, induce, predominantly, the crystallization of the electrically active beta-phase of PVDF, while the initial micron size particles induce the formation of the most common but non-polar alpha-crystal form. The introduction of activated particles reduces the overall crystallinity but slightly affects the crystallization and melting temperatures of the matrix. Dielectric spectroscopy revealed that at fixed filler content the dielectric constant of the blend increases with decreasing of the particle size (increasing of the activation time). A similar trend was observed for the storage moduli in dynamic mechanical analysis; the stiffness of the composite was higher when mechanically activated particles were used. AB - A procedure for the preparation of ZnO nanocubes in an alginate biopolymer was introduced. The obtained nanocubes were used for the preparation of ZnO/Ag heterostructures. High resolution scanning electron microscopy showed that reduction of silver salts in the presence of nanocubes results in the formation of spherical silver nanoparticles at their edges and vertices. UV-vis and photoluminescence spectroscopy revealed that alginate-ZnO/Ag nanostructures exhibit different optical properties compared to the starting alginate-ZnO system. The surface plasmon resonance peak of the silver nanoparticles dominates the absorption spectra of the ZnO/Ag hybrid particles, while at the same time the Ag nanoparticles quench the ZnO emission. The photocatalytic activity of the ZnO/Ag heterostructure was faster than that of the pure ZnO and further improved with increasing the concentration of silver. Both the alginate-ZnO and alginate-ZnO/Ag nanocomposites showed strong antimicrobial activities against gram-positive (Staphylococcus aureus) and gram-negative (Escherichia coli) bacteria. AB - The surface dielectric properties of acid-etched low-density polyethylene (LDPE) were analysed in the frequency range from 20 Hz to 200 kHz. Samples were treated with various acids for a period of one hour, at temperatures ranging from 20 to 70 degrees C. After the treatment, the samples were analysed with Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, revealing chemical and crystallinity changes on the surface, as a direct result of the treatment. The sample surfaces were analysed using atomic force microscopy. The micrographs show that the acid treatment increases the roughness of the samples. Compared to untreated LDPE, the etched samples may exhibit significantly different conductance values at low frequencies. It is also observed that an increase in the acid treatment temperature can result in lower values of conductance and susceptance compared to untreated samples. LDPE films with low value of surface AC conductivity after acid treatment are potentially useful substrates for high-speed electro-sensing applications. The presented results indicate that a suitable choice of acid treatment of LDPE can effect surface polarization while preserving low values of surface AC conductivity of the polymer. AB - This study describes the possibility of dielectric characterization of the initial stages of ageing in an low-density polyethylene (LDPE) + graphite composite, which is not possible using the standard method of dielectric spectroscopy. It is shown that the differences between the delay angles, Delta phi = phi(TRI)-phi(SIN), obtained using triangular and sinusoidal excitations on the composite samples, shows a maximum, and at the same time the position of this maximum shows more sensitivity to changes in the electrical properties of the material caused by ageing than other dielectric parameters. In order to clarify the applied methodology, a comparative analysis of the dielectric properties of other polymers poly(vinyl chloride) (PVC) and poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) and a conductive polymer composite (LDPE + carbon black) with respect to the application of sinusoidal and triangular electrical signals was carried out. Based on the presented results, we believe that the position of the peak in the frequency spectra of the difference between the delay angles obtained by using triangular and sinusoidal signals may be a suitable parameter for the dielectric characterization of polymeric materials.

AB - Hybrid nanosystems composed of glycogen biopolymers and gold nanoparticles were prepared by an in situ non-toxic synthetic procedure. Transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and various spectroscopic methods (optical absorption, X-ray photoelectron and photoluminescence spectroscopy) were used for the characterization of the obtained bioconjugates. The gold nanoparticles formed in the presence of glycogen were spherical in shape and approximately 15 nm in diameter. The TEM micrographs show that the nanoparticles aggregated on the surface of the glycogen biomolecules. This effect induced a shift of the surface plasmon resonance band towards higher wavelengths on an increase in gold ion concentration. Effective medium theory calculations were carried out in order to explain the observed redshift of the plasmon band in the absorption spectra of the Au-glycogen colloids. The interactions of the gold nanoparticles with glycogen strongly affected the photoluminescence of the glycogenin protein incorporated into its structure. The Au-glycogen hydrocolloids exhibited good chemical stability in the presence of saline, phosphate buffered saline, alanine, histidine and D-glucose.

AB - In this study, bio-based nanocomposites of sisal whiskers-reinforced poly(furfuryl alcohol) (PFA) were prepared using an in situ polymerization method. Furfuryl alcohol (FA), which is a derived renewable monomer, was used to serve first as a solvent to disperse the whiskers and later as a monomeric precursor to produce PFA. Sisal whiskers were prepared via acid hydrolysis, which was followed by freeze-drying and re-dispersion of the dried whiskers in FA by sonication for 20 min. The polymerization process was catalysed using citric acid, which is also a renewable carboxylic acid found in citrus fruits. The effect of increased sisal whiskers loading on the thermal and dynamic mechanical properties of the nanocomposites was investigated using thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) and dynamic mechanical analysis (DMA). The TGA results showed slightly higher thermal stability for the nanocomposite samples compared to neat PFA. The DMA results showed that the incorporation of sisal whiskers imparts significant enhancement in the storage modulus of the PFA matrix. Moreover, the intensity of the tan delta peak at similar to 75 A degrees C for the nanocomposites was remarkably reduced compared to that of neat PFA.

AB - Nanostructured lanthanum (III)-oxide (La2O3) particles were prepared by a polymer complex solution method and further used for the preparation of lanthanum hydroxide (La(OH)3) nanoparticles. The La(OH)3 nanopowder was mixed with glycerol-plasticized maize starch and the effect of the filler on the thermal, mechanical, and viscoelastic properties of the matrix was investigated. It was expected that this nanofiller, which shows an affinity toward OH groups, would strongly affect the physical properties of thermoplastic starch (TPS). The pure TPS and the TPS-La(OH)3 nanocomposite films (with 1, 2, and 3 wt % filler) were conditioned at various relative humidities (RHs) (35, 57, 75, and 99% RH). After conditioning at 99% RH, the pure TPS films exhibited higher affinity toward water than the nanocomposites. Differential scanning calorimetric measurements showed that, due to retrogradation effects, the melting enthalpies of the films increased with increasing RH. Dynamic mechanical analysis revealed that the mechanical properties in the linear range strongly depend on both the humidity conditions and the concentration of the filler. The results also show that La(OH)3 nanoparticles are good reinforcement for TPS films. (C) 2012 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J. Appl. Polym. Sci., 2012

AB - Alginate was used as a controlled environment for the growth of ZnO nanoparticles. The formation of nanostructured particles was confirmed by a blue shift in the onset of the optical absorption with respect to bulk ZnO. From the XRD measurements it was found that the obtained ZnO nanoparticles have a hexagonal crystal structure. The emission spectrum of the nanocomposite is dominated by a strong band-to-band recombination, while the emission from the ZnO defect states depended on the preparation conditions. Besides showing the presence of Zn 2p, O is, Na 1s and C 1s core levels, the XPS analysis also showed that the O is spectra can be resolved into two lines that are attributed to the presence of OH groups on the surface of the particles and ZnO, respectively. Antimicrobial tests revealed that the ZnO-alginate nanocomposite exhibits a strong activity against the common pathogens Staphylococcus aureus and Escherichia coli. (C) 2011 Elsevier Ltd. AB - A silver nanoparticle colloid was prepared by a modified Tollens method using D-glucose as the reduction agent. The obtained nanoparticles were used for the modification of pine, linter and recycled cellulose fibers. Although the silver contents were relatively low (0.05-0.13 wt.%), the cellulose-sheets prepared from the modified fibers show improved mechanical and viscoelastic properties. The tensile index (strength) increased with up to 30% in comparison to the index of the sheets obtained from the untreated fibers. The influence of the nanoparticles on the viscoelastic properties of the cellulose sheets was investigated by dynamic mechanical analysis (DMA) in the temperature range from -120 to 20 degrees C and with a force frequency of 100Hz. A broad relaxation transition positioned at -80 degrees C was observed in the loss modulus spectrum of all the cellulose sheets, while the Ag-modified sheets exhibited higher storage moduli values in the whole temperature range. The antimicrobial activity tests show that the pine, silver and recycled cellulose fiber sheets with silver nanoparticles can be successfully employed to prevent the viability and growth of the common pathogens Staphylococcus aureus, Escherichia coli and Candida albicans. AB - Poly(2-(dimethylamino)ethyl methacrylate-co-acrylic acid) polyampholyte copolymers were synthesized by radical polymerization of the co-monomers in different molar ratios (2-1, 1-1 and 1-2). The water solutions of the obtained materials were used as stabilization agents for the synthesis of silver nanoparticles. XRD. FTIR and DMA methods were used to study the physical properties of the pure copolymers. It was found that the copolymer is a completely amorphous and inhomogeneous material. The FTIR spectrum was analysed by using literature data and corresponding numerical simulations. TEM analysis showed that the shape of the nanoparticles prepared by reduction of the silver salt in the presence of co-polymers strongly depends on the ratio of DMAEMA and AA co-monomer units. Besides spherical Ag-nanoparticles, reduction in the presence of the polymer with equal molar content of co-monomers also resulted in the formation of nano-plate particles (circular thin plates and thin triangular nanoprisms). The formation of the nano-plate particles was further promoted by heating the mentioned solution at 60 degrees C in air. UV-vis spectroscopy was used to study the change in the surface plasmon resonance behaviour during the growth of the nanoplates. The Ag-nanocomposite thin films of all three co-polymers showed fast antimicrobial activity against the Staphylococcus aureus, Escherichia coli and Candida albicans pathogens (more than 99% reduction after 2 h of exposure). AB - The glycogen biopolymer from the bovine liver has been used as stabilization agent for the growth of silver nanoparticles The samples with various contents of silver were prepared by two different procedures that include fast (using microwave radiation) and slow (conventional) heating of the reaction mixtures The TEM images of the two nanocomposites showed the presence of nanoparticles with average diameter of 9 7 and 10 4 nm respectively The results also revealed that the optical properties of the obtained nanocomposite samples strongly depend on the method of preparation The samples prepared using microwave radiation exhibited narrower surface plasmon resonance peaks while the silver nanoparticles induced quenching of the photoluminescence of glycogen in all of the tested samples Antimicrobial activity tests were carried out against Staphylococcus aureus Escherichia coli and Candida albicans pathogens and showed that the microbial growth was gradually reduced as the concentration of the silver increased Also after 2 h of exposure to the nanocomposites the number of cells was significantly reduced ( GT 99%) for all the strains tested (C) 2010 Elsevier Ltd All rights reserved

AB - Nanocomposite materials were produced from polychloroprene rubber (PCP) as the matrix and organically modified montmorillonite clays as fillers by using a two-roll mill. PCP was mixed with the clays at contents of 2.5, 5, and 10 phr. Five types of clay (Cloisite 15A, 20A, 25A, 10A and 93A) were investigated and their influence on the morphology, thermal stability and stress relaxation properties of the rubber was compared. The degree of exfoliation or intercalation of the organoclays in the PCP nanocomposites was investigated using x-ray diffractometry (XRD) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). The results for Cloisite 93A and Cloisite 15A depicted an exfoliated structure and a well-dispersed morphology in the polymer matrix at all filler contents, while complete exfoliation was not observed for the other clays, especially at higher clay contents. The initial stage of thermal degradation was accelerated with the incorporation of organoclays. The TGA results show that Cloisite 15A and Cloisite 93A have a significant influence on the PCP degradation mechanism, even at low clay contents. Cloisite 15A and Cloisite 93A containing nanocomposites were generally found to have better stress relaxation properties than the other samples. (C) 2011 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

AB - Silver nanoparticles were synthesized in a chitosan biopolymer by an in situ green chemical procedure. using D-glucose as the reducing agent. The reaction intermediates (silver-chitosan complexes) as well as the obtained nanocomposites were investigated using transmission electron microscopy, UV-vis, FTIR and photoluminescence spectroscopy. The theoretical analysis of the UV-vis absorption of the Ag-chitosan complexes suggested that the significant contribution to the complex spectrum arises from clusters of silver containing 4-9 atoms. The absorption spectrum of the nanocomposite exhibited a strong surface plasmon resonance band at 406 nm. The photoluminescence behavior of the pure chitosan, the silver-chitosan complexes and the nanocomposites were discussed in terms of morphology and silver weight content. (C) 2010 Elsevier Ltd. AB - Nanostructured wollastonite was synthesized by a sol-gel method and then used as a filler for polypropylene (PP). The obtained wollastonite particles were investigated using XRD, TEM and FTIR techniques. Non-isothermal crystallization measurements revealed that the wollastonite filler reduced the crystallization temperature of the matrix. TGA analyses showed improved thermal stability of the nanocomposite with respect to that of the pure polypropylene. From the DMA tan delta curves, it was concluded that the introduction of the filler into the PP matrix induced a slight shift of the beta-transition (glass transition) towards higher temperature. The measurements of storage moduli showed that the nanocomposites have higher stiffness than the pure PP over the whole range of test temperature. An increase in stiffness was also confirmed by tensile measurements. (C) 2009 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

AB - In this paper, a novel route for the synthesis of Y2SiO5 (YSO) nanoparticles doped with Eu3+ ions. based on the use of a hydrothermally prepared silica sol as a chemical precursor and nanostructurign template, is presented. X-ray powder diffraction revealed crystallization of nanoparticles in an X-1 monoclinic structural type (P2(l)/c) with well pronounced diffraction peaks and Without any sign of additional phases. Transmission electron microscopy showed that the particle diameter was around 40 nm and that the particles formed loose aggregates. The synthesized materials exhibited characteristic luminescence emission of the trivalent europium ion, with the strongest emission (D-5(0) - GT F-7(2) transition) at 611.5 nm and a corresponding lifetime of 1.8 ms. Two site occupancy, as expected, were demonstrated. (C) 2007 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

AB - Tri-n-octylphosphine oxide-capped CdS nanoparticles were synthesized with the cadmium(II) complex of thiocarbohydrazide as a precursor. Nanocomposites were prepared by mixing a toluene solution of poly(ethylene oxide) (PEO) and the obtained CdS nanoparticles. The ultraviolet-visible spectroscopy measurements showed a blue shift of the onset of optical absorption, compared to bulk CdS, which confirmed the presence of nanostructured CdS. A transmission electron microscopy micrograph of the nanocomposite depicted that the nanoparticles are well dispersed in the PEO matrix. Differential scanning calorimetry analysis revealed hindered crystallization of PEO in the presence of CdS nanoparticles. It was also found that increasing the nanoparticle content led to the shift of the onset of decomposition of the matrix towards higher temperature.
