AB - INVESTIGATION OF THE MORPHOLOGY AND SURFACE PROPERTIES OF CROSSLINKED POLY(URETHANE-ESTER-SILOXANE)S Jasna V. Dzunuzovic(1), Marija V. Pergal(1), Vesna V. Vodnik(2), Milena Spirkova(3), Rafal Poreba(3), Slobodan Jovanovic(4) (1)University of Belgrade, Institute of Chemistry, Technology and Metallurgy (ICTM) Center of Chemistry, Belgrade, Serbia (2)University of Belgrade, Institute of Nuclear Science Vinca, Belgrade, Serbia (3)Institute of Macromolecular Chemistry AS CR, v.v.i., Nanostructured Polymers and Composites Department, Praha, Czech Republic (4)University of Belgrade, Faculty of Technology and Metallurgy, Belgrade, Serbia (Scientific paper) Two series of crosslinked poly(urethane-ester-siloxane)s were synthesized from alpha,omega-dihydroxy-(ethylene oxide-poly(dimethylsiloxane)-ethylene oxide) (EO-PDMS-EO), 4,4-methylenediphenyl diisocyanate and Boltorn (R) hyperbranched polyesters of the second and third pseudo generation, by two-step polymerization in solution. The effect of the EO-PDMS-EO content and functionality of the applied crosslinking agent on the morphology and surface properties of the prepared poly(urethane-ester-siloxane)s was investigated by FTIR spectroscopy, small-angle X-ray scattering (SAXS), atomic force microscopy (AFM), scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and water absorption measurement. Different techniques (FTIR peak deconvolution, SAXS and AFM) revealed that decrease of the crosslinking agent functionality and EO-PDMS-EO content promotes microphase separation in the synthesized poly(urethane-ester-siloxane)s. SEM analysis and water absorption experiments showed that, due to the hydrophobic character of EO-PDMS-EO and its ability to migrate to the surface of poly(urethane-ester-siloxane)s, samples synthesized with higher EO-PDMS-EO content and crosslinking agents of lower functionality had more hydrophobic surfaces and better waterproof performances. The obtained results indicate that the synthesis of poly(urethane-ester-siloxane)s based on EO-PDMS-EO and Boltorn (R) hyperbranched polyesters leads to the creation of networks with interesting morphological and surface properties, which can be easily tailored by changing the content of EO-PDMS-EO segment or functionality of hyperbranched polyester.

AB - Six polyurethane networks were synthesized from Boltorn (R) hyperbranched polyester of the second pseudo generation, alpha,omega-dihydroxy-(ethylene oxide-poly(dimethylsiloxane)-ethylene oxide) (EO-PDMS-EO) and 4,4-methylenediphenyl diisocyanate. The effect of the EO-PDMS-EO content on the properties of prepared polyurethanes was investigated by dynamic mechanical thermal analysis (DMTA), differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), swelling measurements, water contact angle and water absorption. Different techniques (FTIR peak deconvolution, DMTA and SEM) revealed that decrease of EO-PDMS-EO content promotes microphase separation in the synthesized polyurethanes. Samples synthesized with higher EO-PDMS-EO content have more hydrophobic surface and better waterproof performances, but lower crosslinking density. TGA results suggest that thermal stability of the synthesized polyurethane networks in nitrogen is significantly affected by the mutual influence of the crosslinking density and EO-PDMS-EO content. The results obtained in this work indicate that the synthesis of polyurethanes based on hyperbranched polyester and EO-PDMS-EO leads to the creation of networks with good thermal, thermomechanical and surface properties. AB - It was the aim of the study presented here to estimate for the first time patient dose levels in conventional diagnostic radiology in Montenegro. Measurements of patient dose in terms of entrance surface air kerma (ESAK) and kerma-area product (KAP) were performed on at least 10 patients for each examination type, in each of five randomly selected health institutions in Montenegro, so that a total of 872 patients for 16 different examination categories were included in the survey (817 patients for 1049 radiographies and 55 fluoroscopy patients). Exposure settings and individual data were recorded for each patient. Mean, median and third quartile values ESAK of patient doses are reported. The estimated mean ESAK values obtained are as follows: 4.7 mGy for pelvis anteroposterior (AP), 4.5 mGy for lumbar spine AP, 7.8 mGy for lumbar spine lateral (LAT), 3.1 mGy for thoracic spine AP and 4.3 mGy for thoracic spine LAT. When compared with the European diagnostic reference values, the mean ESAK for all studied examination types are found to be below the reference levels, except in chest radiography. Mean ESAK values for chest radiography are 0.9 mGy for posteroanterior (PA) projection and 2.0 mGy for LAT. The results exhibit a wide range of variation. For fluoroscopy examinations, the total KAP was measured. The mean KAP value per procedure for barium meal is found to be 22 Gy cm(2), 41 Gy cm(2) for barium enema and 19 Gy cm(2) for intravenous urography. Broad dose ranges for the same types of examinations indicate the necessity of applying practice optimisation in diagnostic radiology and establishment of national diagnostic reference levels.

AB - A series of six polyurethane (PU) networks was synthesized from Boltorn (R) hydroxy-functional hyperbranched polyester (HBP) of the second pseudo generation as a cross-linking agent, alpha,omega-dihydroxy-(ethylene oxide-poly(dimethylsiloxane)-ethylene oxide) (EO-PDMS-EO) and 4,4-methylenediphenyl diisocyanate, by two-step polymerization in solution. Each sample of the prepared PUs had different EO-PDMS-EO content. The chemical structure of the synthesized networks was analyzed by FTIR spectroscopy. The influence of the EO-PDMS-EO content and type of the solvent on the swelling behavior of the PUs in 2-propanol and toluene was investigated. During the swelling measurements, a certain amount of sal fractions was extracted from the PUs by solvents. According to the H-1-NMR results, sal fractions were mainly composed of the soluble hyperbranched PU, formed during the polymerization by partial modification of the end hydroxyl groups of HBP with NCO-terminated prepolymer synthesized in the first step of the reaction. Chains of the so reacted prepolymer can then fold back and form cyclic products by reaction of the free -NCO group from the NCO-terminated prepolymer with free -OH group of HBP. As the EO-PDMS-EO content increases the amount of the sol fractions and swelling degree also increased, indicating that networks with lower EO-PDMS-EO content are more cross-linked and have higher solvent resistance.

AB - Rheological behavior in melt of aliphatic hyperbranched polyesters (AHBP), synthesized using pseudo-one-step and one-step procedure, was investigated in this work. Three commercially available AHBP were also examined. Because of the presence of relatively strong hydrogen bonds between numerous end hydroxyl groups, AHBP of lower generation number, as well as the sample of tenth pseudo generation, show non-Newtonian behavior in the entire investigated frequency and temperature region. However, for other examined AHBP, the slope of the frequency dependence of complex viscosity (eta* = f(omega)) becomes smaller with the temperature increase. Therefore, samples of fourth, fifth, and sixth pseudo generations show Newtonian behavior at temperatures higher than 70 degrees C. Value of glass transition temperature, melt flow activation energy, fractional free volume, and thermal expansion coefficient were determined for the investigated AHBP. The influence of the type of end groups on rheological properties of AHBP was also examined. (C) 2009 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J Appl Polym Sci 112: 2925-2934, 2009

AB - In this paper, two samples of polyurethane (PU) crosslinked with hydroxy-functonal hyperbranched aliphatic polyester of the second pseudo generation were investigated. For the synthesis of these crosslinked PUs two different macrodiols were used: poly(tetramethyleneoxide) (PTMO) for PUPTMO and ethylene oxide-poly(dimethylsiloxane)-ethylene oxide (PDMS-EO) for PUPDMS-EO sample, Synthesized samples behave as elastomers and have yellow color. Obtained results show that swelling degree of the sample PUPDMS-EO in N-methyl-2-pyrrolidinon (NMP) determined at room temperature is higher than for the sample PUPTMO. It has been also observed that thermal properties of these polyurethane networks can be changed by incorporation of siloxane sequences in their structure.
