AB - Experimental verification of thermal memory effects represents a challenge that is important from both fundamental and practical points of view. Recent theoretical studies suggest that the thermal memory effect should lead to thermal resonances in the modulation frequency characteristics of photoacoustic response. Therefore, studies of thermal resonances in photoacoustic response represent an alternative for detection of the thermal memory effect and measurement of thermal memory properties. Since the resonances were not observed, this paper analyzes standard measurement setups and shows that the experimental technique should be optimized to provide a better chance of detection of thermal memory effects by photoacoustic measurements. The results show that a proper selection of modulation frequencies and the knowledge of the approximate transfer function of the electronic part of the photoacoustic measurement system are prerequisites for detection of thermal resonances in the modulation frequency characteristics of photoacoustic response.

AB - Macromolecular nanostructures represent a class of materials of considerable interest for application in nanooptics and nanoelectronics. The potential applications require understanding of the transport mechanisms in macromolecular nanostructures, and the recent theoretical studies indicated that the transport mechanisms of heat generated by absorption of IR and visible light are different. In this paper is proposed a combination of experimental techniques that would enable simultaneous measurement of optical and thermal properties of macromolecular structures excited by wide spectrum of light. The results of the experiments would enable credible testing of validity of the predictions of the theoretical studies, and further insight of the transport processes in macromolecular nanostructures.

AB - The paper presents a study of possibilities to extend the present methodology for thermal characterization of thin solid samples by photoacoustic techniques. The present methodology consists of linear fitting of the experimental data to approximate the expressions derived from the composite piston model of photoacoustic response and it is mainly used for calculation of thermal diffusivity of thin samples. The study has shown that the methodology may be extended to calculation of thermal diffusivity, thermal conductivity and thermal expansion coefficients of thin samples by linear fitting in multiple frequency ranges and by analysis of the intersection frequency, which is the frequency where the magnitudes of two components of photoacoustic response in the composite piston model are equal. The analysis of numeric errors of the methodology has revealed the dominant sources and magnitude of the errors, leading to the conclusion that photoacoustic techniques should be carefully used as a tool for extensive thermal characterization of thin samples in the cases when other techniques are not applicable or have larger errors. AB - This paper presents a model for indirect photoacoustic response that includes thermal memory effects. At low frequencies, the model reduces to the well-known thermal piston model of photoacoustic response given by Rosencweig and Gersho. However, at high frequencies, the presented model predicts resonant behavior of amplitudes and phases of photoacoustic response and determines the respective resonant frequencies. The results of the presented model enable experimental determination of standard thermal properties of solids (thermal diffusivity and thermal conductivity), as well as thermal memory properties, thermal relaxation time, and heat propagation speed. AB - On the basis of the generalized photoacoustic response model, which includes the influence of thermal memory on both thermoconducting and thermoelastic components, photoacoustic response of thin films is analysed. It is demonstrated that the influence of thermal memory is manifested at frequencies above certain boundary frequency, which depends on thermal memory properties of the sample and its depth. A linear relation, linking heat propagation velocity and measured signal, is derived. Taking into account the confinement of the frequency range imposed by the measuring system, it is indicated that thermal memory properties of non-cristaline thin films can be determined in a photoacoustic experiment.

AB - If the model of the photoacoustic (PA) response of an investigated system contains many unknown parameters, as is the case with multilayered samples, then the inverse procedure for the calculation of the parameters is highly sensitive to experimental noise. The problem cannot be solved by developing the experimental setup or by data acquisition methods, but only by an improvement of the theoretical approach. This paper presents an analysis of the applicability of the effective medium approximation to the PA response of multilayered samples. It has been shown that the theory is not applicable to the general case, and explicit expressions for the effective values of thermal diffusivity and heat propagation speed have been derived for some special cases.

AB - In this paper, a model of the thermoconducting component of the indirect photoacoustic (PA) response is derived that includes thermal memory properties of the examined material and its fluid environment. A comparison is made between the derived model and the classic one, which neglects the influence of thermal memory. It has been shown that, at modulation frequencies lower than a certain boundary frequency of the light source, these models tend to overlap, while at higher frequencies, noticeable differences occur. The boundary frequency depends on heat propagation velocity through the sample and its thickness. This observation limits the validity domain of previous models to a range lower than the boundary frequency, offering, at the same time, the possibility of obtaining thermal memory properties using PA effects at frequencies above it.

AB - Photothermal thermoelastic bending depends on an optically generated dynamic thermal field distribution within a sample. A generalized description of the distribution is proposed, including the effects of a finite heat propagation velocity and a finite, non-zero time of thermal relaxation (known as thermal memory effects in generalized heat conduction theory), and finally the generated thermoelastic bending is calculated by using both a thin solid-plate approximation and a decoupling system of thermoelastic equations. The comparison between this model and the classical one, which does not account for thermal memory influence, has been made. If the sample is thicker than the value of its minimal thermal diffusion length, the difference between the two models becomes insignificant. Otherwise, it has been shown that the two models tend to overlap at low and high modulation frequencies of the excitation light, while in the mid-frequency range, some deviations become more apparent and thermal memory properties of the sample must be taken into account. The suggested model enables evaluation of thermal memory properties for such a solid.

AB - The generalized model of surface temperature variations of a three-layer structure irradiated by intensity modulated laser beam was derived, including thermal memory effects. In the specific case of a polymer layer sandwiched between two thin metal foils the model was simplified by electrical analogy. It allowed formulation of unambiguous inverse procedure for estimation of dominating system thermal properties of system from measured photothermal spectra.

AB - Low lying energy levels of Fe2+ ion triples in the cubic-structure iron-based diluted magnetic semiconductors are calculated on the basis of a model which includes crystal field, spin-orbit interaction, Zeeman interaction and Heisenberg-type exchange interaction. Using this energy level diagram the magnetic susceptibility of a crystal is calculated in the nearest-neighbour (NN) and in the extended NN pair approximation, We find that the Fe2+ ion triples contribute to the temperature dependent susceptibility up to the lowest temperatures investigated, T greater than or equal to 1 K. It appears that the triple Fe2+ ion clusters may explain at least a part of the low-temperature increase of the magnetic susceptibility which is observed in these magnetic materials. AB - The magnetic susceptibility of diluted magnetic semiconductors Hg1-xFexSe, Zn1-xFexSe and Zn1-xFexS has been calculated within a crystal field model applying the extended nearest-neighbour pair approximation. The results are compared with available experimental data. Taking the long-range antiferromagnetic exchange interaction between Fe2+ ions in the form J(R) = J(NN)/R-n, good agreement between theory and experiment is obtained for Hg1-xFexSe with 11 K less than or equal to \J(NN)\ less than or equal to 15 K and n = 5, and for Zn1-xFexSe with J(NN) = -22 K and n = 6.8. We find that the crystal field model gives a good description of the magnetic susceptibility of Zn1-xFexS using only the nearest-neighbour exchange interaction, J(NN) = -37 K.

Our experimental data as well as those reported earlier are compared with the extended nearest-neighbour pair approximation calculations taking into account the long-range antiferromagnetic exchange interaction between Fe2+ ions in the form J(R) = J(NN)/R-n. Good agreement is found between the theory and experiment with 11 K less than or equal to \J(NN)\ less than or equal to 15 K and n = 5.

AB - The second and fourth central moments of the EPR line of the Mn2+ ion clusters are calculated for the case when isotropic and anisotropic superexchange interactions exist between paramagnetic ions. The infinite-temperature linewidth for each type of the cluster is found taking Lorentzian lineshape function. Using cluster-method calculations of central moments, infinite-temperature EPR linewidth in Zn1-xMnxTe is evaluated for x less than or equal to 0.20, and the results are compared with the theory of the EPR line broadening developed for randomly diluted magnetic semiconductors. The cluster-method approach to the EPR linewidth offers an explanation of the narrow resonance observed in Zn1-xMnxTe for x GT 0.20. (C) 1996 Academic Press, Inc.
