AB  - Paper presents short review of research problems, applied methods for solving problems and main results obtained by the researchers in Laboratory for Ther-mal Engineering and Energy (LTE) of the "Vinca" Institute of Nuclear Sciences, Belgrade, Serbia dealing with pulverized coal combustion processes and tech-nologies for reduction of pollutions problems at thermal power plants in a period since 2000. The presented results were published in numerous studies realized for different users, Ph. D., Masters, and Specialist thesis, in international and domestic scientific journals and monographs, presented at numerous internation-al and domestic scientific conferences, etc. Presented research projects and re-sults of applied research projects realized at pulverized coal combustion thermal power plants clearly show that LTE team was involved in key activities of reha-bilitation and modernization, including implementation of best available technol-ogies for pollution reduction at thermal power plants, in the region of South East Europe.

Pljevlja lignite carbon emission characteristics

AB  - The anthropogenic emission of GHG especially CO has to be limited and reduced due to 2 their impact on global warming and climate change. Combustion of fossil fuels in the energy sector has a dominant share in total GHG emissions. In order to reduce GHG emission, European Union established a scheme for GHG allowance trading within the community, and the implementation of the European Union emission trading scheme, which is a key to GHG reduction in a cost-effective way. An important part of emission trading scheme is prescribed methodology for monitoring, reporting, and verification of the emission of GHG including characterization of the local fuels combusted by the energy sector. This paper presents lignite characteristics from open-pit mine Borovica- Pljevlja, which has highest coal production in Montenegro (>1.2 Mt per year), including evaluation of its carbon emission factor based on the laboratory analysis of 72 coal samples. Testing of the samples included proximate and ultimate analysis, as well as, net calorific value determination. In accordance with the obtained results, linear correlations between net calorific value and combustible matter content, carbon content and combustible matter content, hydrogen content and combustible matter content, carbon content and net calorific value, were established. Finally, the non-linear analytical correlation between carbon emission factor and net calorific value for Pljevlja lignite was proposed, as a base for the precise calculation of CO emission evaluation.

AB  - The electrostatic precipitator system of the lignite fired 350 MWe unit B1 of Thermal Power Plant Kostolac B has been modernized during 2014. The results of complex in site measurements, performed in the frame of performance control test at the beginning of the exploitation period of the upgraded electrostatic pre-cipitator proved that, under normal and guarantee working conditions of the boiler and precipitator, the emission of particulate matter do not exceed limiting value. After the period of precipitator further adjustments, five series of meas-urements in the frame of acceptance test were performed in accordance with rel-evant standards. This paper presents results of the investigation of particulate matter concentration, laboratory analysis of the lignite, fly and bottom ash sam-ples, working parameters of the unit and upgraded electrostatic precipitator as well as results of the calculations. The averaged mean particulate concentration at the exit of upgraded electrostatic precipitator of the unit B1 during Acceptance test was below guaranteed value. It is confirmed that adjustments of electrostatic precipitator electrical parameters have improved electrostatic precipitator effi-ciency, as well that electrostatic precipitatorcould work highly efficiently in en-ergy save mode with lower power consumption. © 2018 Society of Thermal Engineers of Serbia.

Comparative Study on Cavitation Erosion Resistance of A356 Alloy and A356FA5 Composite

AB  - In the present study, an aluminum alloy A356 composite with addition of 5 wt% fly ash was synthesized and subjected to the cavitation erosion resistance test in order to find out if this material can be used in conditions where the cavitation erosion resistance is expected. Obtained results were compared with that of as-cast aluminum A356 alloy, confirming that composite possessed better cavitation erosion resistance than original alloy and that fly ash can be used as an effective reinforcement in metal matrix composites production. Scanning electron microscopy and optical microscopy was used for microstructural analysis. Phase identification of fly ash was carried out using X-ray diffraction analysis. Several methods for monitoring the cavitation erosion resistance of A356 alloy and corresponding composite were applied, such as: mass loss (Delta m), volume loss (Delta V), level of surface degradatiom (P/Po) and pit depth.

AB  - In order to compare three different techniques and estimate radiological impact, activity concentration of Pb-210 in coal, slag and ash samples from thermal power plant Nikola Tesla, Serbia, were measured, and results are presented in this study. Determination of Pb-210 was carried out in three ways: using HPGe gamma spectrometer and via in-growth of Po-210 and Bi-210 by alpha-particle spectrometry and proportional counting, respectively. The results obtained for three different techniques were compared. Statistical analysis and comparison of methods were carried out by combination of Z score and chi (2) statistical tests. Tests results, as well as values of measured activities concentrations obtained by alpha and gamma spectrometry, showed that gamma spectrometry is a valid alternative to time-consuming alpha spectrometry for low level activity measurements of Pb-210. This remark is also valid even for gamma spectrometers with poor efficiency in low energy region.

AB  - This paper presents method for sustainability assessment of thermal power plant unit using multi-criteria analysis with aim to create base for business decision. Seven options of possible status of thermal power plant Kolubara A unit No. 2 with energy indicators of sustainable development were shown. Energy indicators of sustainable development consists of sets of resource preservation, economic, environmental, and social indicators. Sustainability assessment often fails to account for social influence on energy system. Considering to this, special focus will be on social indicators, their definition, forming, and impact on multi-criteria sustainability analysis. Analysis of quality of the selected options (energy systems) in respect to sustainable development by compare of their general index of sustainability is presented. Methodology of multi-criteria analyse of thermal power plant unit can show decision makers how to find best available options when the social indicators impact is leading. The aim of this paper is to choose the criteria for the evaluation of the available options, determine the relative importance of specific criteria and present methodology of multi-criteria analysis in the decision-making process.

Considering to this, special focus will be on social indicators, their definition, forming, and impact on multi-criteria sustainability analysis. Analysis of quality of the selected options (energy systems) in respect to sustainable development by compare of their general index of sustainability is presented. Methodology of multi-criteria analyse of thermal power plant unit can show decision makers how to find best available options when the social indicators impact is leading. The aim of this paper is to choose the criteria for the evaluation of the available options, determine the relative importance of specific criteria and present methodology of multi-criteria analysis in the decision-making process.",

AB  - An overview of the current status of low-rank coal upgrading technologies is presented in the paper, particularly with respect to drying and dewatering procedures. AB  - Numerical modeling is widely used tool for prediction of combustion processes. Computational Fluid Dynamics - CFD models use three kinetic rates for description of the coal combustion processes: coal devolatilization, volatile combustion and char combustion. Reported rates for coal devolatilization vary considerably among the authors depending on the type of experimental systems used in describing the phenomenon. Accurate representation of devolatilization process is necessary in order to perform successful CFD calculations of pulverized coal combustion and gasification. The subject of this work is numerical modeling of Serbian lignite pulverized coal devolatilization in drop tube type laboratory scale reactor. The aim of this study is to evaluate the influence of different devolatilization kinetic factors on total devolatilization time in numerical modeling of pulverized Serbian lignite devolatilization. AB  - The lubricated and dry sliding wear behaviour of ZA-27 alloy composites reinforced with Al2O3 particles of size 250 mu m was evaluated. The content of Al2O3 particles in the alloy was 3, 5 and 10 wt.%. Composites were produced by the compocasting process using mechanical mixing of the matrix, i.e. Al2O3 particles as reinforcement were added into the semi-solid ZA-27 alloy by infiltration and admixing. A block-on-disc wear test device was used to evaluate the wear rate, whereat 30CrNiMo8 steel disc was used as the counterface, under dry and lubricated sliding conditions at different specific loads and sliding speeds. Results indicated that the wear rates of the composites were lower than those of the matrix alloy and further decreased with the increase in Al2O3 particles content in all combinations of applied loads and sliding speeds both in dry and lubricated tests.

AB  - The paper presents new experimental method developed and new measuring system developed and installed into flame-gas tract of utility boiler. Investigations have been performed at the steam boiler of unit 2 at TPP Ptolemais. Ptolemais, Greece. which suffered from very unstable combustion and great pressure oscillations Experimental method. based on high-speed acquisition system. was developed and used for detection of pressure oscillations and determination of the origin of boiler unstable operation. Signals were obtained from piezoelectric pressure sensors located along the flame-gas tract of the steam boiler and time and frequency domain analysis were used for post processing of collected data. Investigations of the pressure oscillations in boiler gas tract have contributed to reveal origin of the boiler unstable operation. and have been of the great help in establishing proper boiler operation

AB  - Pulverized coal particles concentration distribution across the burners distribution channels, especially where plasma torches are installed, is one of the key issues for efficient implementation of plasma system for liquid fuel free combustion support at the pulverized coal fired boilers. The possibility of pulverized coal particles concentration increase at the lower burner channels of TPP Nikola Tesla - A1 boiler using regulation shutters is analyzed experimentally and numerically. Subject of present work is two-phase flue gas-particles mixture flow in burners distribution channels with regulation shutters installed at the TPP Nikola Tesla A1 boiler. Aim of this work is to optimize position of implemented system of shutters to achieve desired concentration and velocity distribution in channels with plasma torches, using numerical modelling. Experimental investigation was performed for the verification of proposed mathematical model for the prediction of the analyzed two-phase flow. Based on verified model, numerical parametric analysis was done. Obtained results of gas phase velocity field. coal particles concentration field, velocity and concentration profiles clearly show the dependence between shutters position and the coal particles mass flow rate and concentration distribution at the outlet cross-section of the burners distribution channels. According to the numerical optimization results suitable modification of the shutter system is proposed.

AB  - The results of the detailed investigations of behavior of lignites Kolubara and Kovin, in fluidized bed combustion are presented in the paper. Investigation was carried out due to the interest of the Serbian Electric Power Production Company to use CFBC boilers in the process of refurbishment of old pulverized coal combustion boilers. As a part of a feasibility study for CFBC use in power plants in Serbia, investigation of combustion characteristics of lignites was performed using original methodology introduced many years ago by Laboratory for Thermal Engineering and Energy. Methodology was approved by numerous investigations of more than 20 Yugoslav coals for FBC combustion, with the aim to determine design data for bubbling FBC boilers. The main attention in present investigation was paid to the problem of using methodology developed for bubbling FBC in the conditions present in CFBC boilers. Four samples of Kolubara lignite, with heat capacity from 2.5 to 8.5 MJ/kg, and different ash contents were investigated, and also lignite Kovin in the same range of heat capacity. Investigations were performed in three phases: (1) ultimate and proximate analysis, determination of ash sintering temperature by standard method and in fluidized bed laboratory oven, (2) investigations in laboratory fluidized bed furnace and determination of coal particle fragmentation, burning rate, start-up temperature and self-sulfure-capture and (3) investigation of combustion in pilot-plant in stationary combustion conditions. In conclusion, suitability of results obtained in BFBC conditions is approved, and earlier statement that lignites are suitable for BFBC is confirmed by the statement that lignites are even more suitable for burning in CFBC boilers. Considering differences between combustion and flow conditions in bubbling and circulating FBC boilers, behavior of the lignites in CFBC is discussed in details and optimal regime parameters of the CFBC boilers are determined. The results obtained will be used by Serbian Electric Power Production Company for evaluation of bid for CFBC boiler implementation in refurbishment of old thermal power plants.

Methodology was approved by numerous investigations of more than 20 Yugoslav coals for FBC combustion, with the aim to determine design data for bubbling FBC boilers. The main attention in present investigation was paid to the problem of using methodology developed for bubbling FBC in the conditions present in CFBC boilers. Four samples of Kolubara lignite, with heat capacity from 2.5 to 8.5 MJ/kg, and different ash contents were investigated, and also lignite Kovin in the same range of heat capacity. Investigations were performed in three phases: (1) ultimate and proximate analysis, determination of ash sintering temperature by standard method and in fluidized bed laboratory oven, (2) investigations in laboratory fluidized bed furnace and determination of coal particle fragmentation, burning rate, start-up temperature and self-sulfure-capture and (3) investigation of combustion in pilot-plant in stationary combustion conditions. In conclusion, suitability of results obtained in BFBC conditions is approved, and earlier statement that lignites are suitable for BFBC is confirmed by the statement that lignites are even more suitable for burning in CFBC boilers. Considering differences between combustion and flow conditions in bubbling and circulating FBC boilers, behavior of the lignites in CFBC is discussed in details and optimal regime parameters of the CFBC boilers are determined. The results obtained will be used by Serbian Electric Power Production Company for evaluation of bid for CFBC boiler implementation in refurbishment of old thermal power plants.",
