AB - Two different synthetic routes were employed to modify surface of graphitic carbon nitride (g- CN) with copper nanoparticles (CuNPs). Structure, morphology and CuNPs distribution on presynthesized g-CN surface are characterized by FT-IR, XRD and TEM. Results suggested that the simpler method based on mixing of precursors in inert atmosphere and room temperature, resulted in better CuNPs distribution compared to method which used refluxing as a step in synthesis.

AB - A novel and effective antibacterial agent based on a combination of copper nanoparticles (CuNPs) and polypyrrole (PPy) is presented. By using a straightforward in situ polymerization method in water, a copper/polypyrrole (Cu/PPy) nanocomposite with spherical CuNPs, around 25 nm in diameter, uniformly dispersed throughout a granular PPy matrix, was characterized and subjected to determination of antibacterial activity toward E. coli, and S. aureus. In this survey, the synergistic engagement of various features of CuNPs and PPy against bacteria was somewhat expected. After a 24 h interaction with S. aureus, already 2 ppm of Cu/PPy with only 9.45 wt% content of Cu is acting almost completely cidal, with 99.17 % bacterial growth inhibition, while 10 ppm has a cidal value of 99.99 % at the same time. Safe and environmentally acceptable concentrations of Cu/PPy indicate that it is convenient as an antibacterial agent for wider use.

AB - The catalytic activity of five silver-polyaniline-polyvinylpyrrolidone (Ag@PANI@PVP1–5) nanocomposites for borohydride oxidation reaction (BOR) was thoroughly examined. The nanocomposites were synthesized by an in situ chemical oxidative polymerization of aniline monomer by Ag+ ions in the presence of accelerator – PVP and physicochemical properties were determined prior their use in electrocatalysis. Ag@PANI@PVP3 with 35.4 wt% Ag delivered the highest current density and specific current density during BOR. Evaluation of the order of reaction < 1 suggested indirect BOR mechanism. Furthermore, Ag@PANI@PVP3 also delivered the highest current density and stable performance during chronoamperometric study of BOR. Its apparent activation energy of 15 kJ mol−1 was found to be the lowest among the studied materials accounting for the high current densities. © 2023 The Author(s)

AB - In recent years, the need for innovative materials has produced remarkable progress in the field of smart materials, with a particular focus on nanocomposite systems containing crosslinked polymer matrices (hydrogels) and metal nanoparticles. Hydrogels have become a crucial class of biomaterials due to their stable 3D porous structures, high fluid absorption capacity, similarity to biological tissues, and biocompatibility. Of particular interest are hydrogels with the ability to respond to various external stimuli (temperature, pH, light etc.), resulting in alterations of their physical and chemical characteristics. Our research focuses on the nanocomposites based on thermosensitive poly(N-isopropylacrylamide) (PNiPAAm) hydrogels and gold nanoparticles (AuNPs), with a unique emphasis on exploring the specific properties of single-layer and bi-layered systems. The insights gained from this comparative study open new possibilities for applications in drug delivery, sensors, and soft robotics. Single-layer systems consisting of active PNiPAAm hydrogel and AuNPs, were created through a combination of radiolytic and chemical procedures. Bi-layered systems feature an active Au-PNiPAAm layer, with the addition of a passive poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) hydrogel layer, crosslinked by the combination of freeze-thaw and radiolytic techniques. In both cases, the incorporation of spherical AuNPs within an active layer was confirmed by the presence of a characteristic surface plasmon resonance (SPR), while scanning electron microscopy (SEM) indicated the system's highly porous structure. The physicochemical properties of both single- and bi-layered systems involved the examination of their swelling and deswelling properties, as well as the volume phase transition temperature (VPTT). The incorporation of AuNPs in the PNiPAAm layer led to an increase in both swelling capacity and VPTT. Compression measurements showed that the presence of a passive layer and AuNPs significantly improved mechanical properties of nanocomposites.

AB - A special group of functional materials with advanced features and accordingly promising applications are the nanocomposites of the metal nanoparticles (MNPs) - gold (Au), silver (Ag), and copper (Cu) and intrinsically conductive polymers - polyaniline and polypyrrole [1-7]. Thanks to the characteristics of these MNPs such as tunability of the plasmon resonance through variation of their size, shape, and composition, in combination with polymers, it is possible to create nanocomposites for specific biomedical and catalytic use as a variety of biological/catalytic processes occurring at nanometer scale. These processes are also related to the surface effects of the MNPs, i.e. the reactive (111) crystallographic planes present on their surface, together with the electrical characteristics and morphology of the polymer, as well as the synergistic activity of both components. Biocompatible polymers with good conductivity and electrochemical activity, such as polyaniline or polypyrrole, are good choices for the formation of functional composites with these MNPs, by in-situ polymerization processes. In addition, they protect the MNPs from agglomeration or oxidation and improve their physicochemical characteristics, functions, and variety of applications. The electrocatalytic response of the different prepared nanocomposites for oxygen reduction reaction, and direct borohydride fuel cells, together with their antimicrobial activity, currently investigated in this field in our group, are the subject of the presented work.

AB - The angle-resolved photoelectron spectroscopy of isolated silver sulfide nanoparticles was carried out by using velocity map imaging technique at the DESIRS beamline of SOLEIL synchrotron facility. The reported spectroscopy results were obtained after interaction of the synchrotron radiation with a polydisperse aerosol produced from aqueous dispersion of silver sulfide particles, approximately 16 nm in diameter. The photoelectron and UV–Vis-NIR absorption spectra were used to estimate the maximum energy of the valance- and the minimum energy of the conduction-band of the nanoparticles. With respect to the vacuum level, the obtained values were found to be 5.5 ± 0.1 eV and 4.5 ± 0.1 eV for the valence band maximum and conduction band minimum, respectively. The dependence of the asymmetry parameter on the electron energy along the silver sulfide valence band showed an onset of inelastic scattering at ~ 1 eV electron kinetic energy.

AB - Gold polypyrrole (AuPPy) and copper polypyrrole (CuPPy) nanocomposites were prepared by a simple one-step in situ oxidative polymerization of pyrrole monomer by Au3+ and Cu2+ ions. Owing to their characteristic physicochemical properties confirmed by optical and structural characterization methods, the behavior of these materials as electrocatalysts for borohydride oxidation reaction (BOR) was considered. BOR apparent activation energy was found to be 16 and 22 kJ mol−1 for AuPPy and CuPPy electrocatalyst, respectively. The stability of the two electrocatalysts was assessed by chronoamperometry. Moreover, fuel cell tests were carried out with AuPPy and CuPPy as anode electrocatalyst of a direct borohydride-peroxide fuel cell (DBPFC). Open circuit voltage (OCV) of 1.30 V was obtained with both AuPPy and CuPPy, with the OCV increasing to 1.45 V upon adding a small amount of carbon (AuPPy-C). The peak power density of a DBPFC with BOR at AuPPy-C anode and hydrogen peroxide reduction reaction at Pt cathode was found to be ca. 162 mW cm−2 at 65 °C.

AB - Recently, the one of the fastest growing areas in materials sciences is the development of polymer-based smart materials, which can autonomously change their physical and/or chemical properties under external stimuli. Photoactuators as a class of smart materials that can produce a reversible mechanical deformation under light stimuli have attracted tremendous interest due to their potential applications in soft robotics, smart grippers, artificial muscles, and smart devices. Thermosensitive hydrogels with gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) are probably the most commonly used active layers. Under the visible light irradiation, the local photo-thermal shrinking is induced, which enables the external wireless remote control of hydrogels and photo-thermalmechanical motions such as bending, curling, and spiraling [1-3]. In this work, hydrogel nanocomposites based on thermosensitive poly(N-isopropylacrylamide) (PNiPAAm) and AuNPs were produced by radiolytic method. The presence of AuNPs,nanospheres and nanorods, incorporated into PNiPAAm hydrogel was confirmed by UV-Vis spectroscopy, XRD, TEM and SEM. The influence of different shapes of AuNPs on physicochemical properties of AuPNiPAAm hydrogel nanocomposites was investigated. Swelling and deswelling kinetics in water at 25C and 48C,respectively, indicate that all samples showed non-Fickian diffusion (both diffusion and polymer chains relaxation processes control the fluid transport). On the other hand, volume phase transition temperature (VPTT), can be adjusted by the incorporation of different shapes of AuNPs. It has been observed that VPTT decreases from 32.5 C for Au nanorods to 30.5Cfor Au nanospheres. Moreover, Au-PNiPAAm hydrogel nanocomposites possess an excellent -switchable electrical conductivity, especially in the case of Au nanorods.

AB - In this study, bi-layered hydrogel nanocomposites, based on gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) embedded in poly(N-isopropylacrylamide) (PNiPAAm) and poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) hydrogel were developed. PNiPAAm with AuNPs represents an active, while PVA represents a passive layer. Crosslinking of polymer matrix with stable 3D structure was obtained by the combination of freezethaw and radiolytic methods, while nanoparticles were synthesized using the seed-mediated approach. The UV-Vis absorption spectra and TEM measurements confirm the presence of spherical AuNPs, with a diameter of 30 nm. The influence of AuNPs on the swelling/deswelling behavior and on volume phase transition temperature (VPTT) in distilled water was investigated. The obtained results showed that values of network and diffusion parameters increase with the incorporation of AuNPs and that the swelling transport mechanism is a non-Fickian transport.

AB - Recently, one of the fastest growing areas in materials sciences is the development of polymer-based smart materials, which can autonomously change their physical and/or chemical properties under external stimuli. Among them, photoactuators as smart materials that can produce a reversible mechanical deformation under light stimuli have attracted tremendous interest due to their potential applications in soft robotics, artificial muscles, and smart devices. Currently, the fabrication of photoactuators is mainly based on photothermal actuation mechanisms which include expansion/contraction, molecule sorption/desorption, and phase transition. Thermosensitive hydrogels with gold nanoparticles are probably the most commonly used active layers. The functional gold nanoparticles exhibit unique photo-thermal properties as a result of a surface plasmon resonance (SPR) electron-phonon process and intrinsic inter-band transitions. Upon immobilization in thermoresponsive hydrogel, they induce local photo-thermal shrinking under visible light irradiation and thus enable external wireless remote control of hydrogel device and programmable photo-thermomechanical motions such as bending, curling, and spiralling. In this work, bi-layered photoactuators based on thermosensitive poly(N-isopropylacrylamide) (PNiPAAm) hydrogel with incorporated gold nanoparticles as an active layer, and poly(vinyl alcohol) hydrogel as a passive layer were produced. Crosslinking of polymer matrix was done by combination of freeze-thaw and radiolytic methods, while nanoparticles were synthesized using the seed-mediated approach. Two different shapes of nanoparticles were incorporated into PNiPAAm hydrogel, gold nanospheres (AuNPs) with radius around 10 nm and gold nanorods (AuNRs) with aspect ratio of 5 (radius of 10 nm, length of 50 nm). The formation of nanoparticles within the active layer was confirmed by appearance of characteristic SPR bands with maxima around 540 nm for AuNPs, and transversal oscillation at 530 nm and longitudinal oscillation around 760 nm for AuNRs. The XRD data for both AuNPs and AuNRs are consistent with the face-centered cubic (fcc) crystal structure of bulk metallic gold, while the FTIR spectra indicated the existence of physical interaction between nanoparticles and polymer matrix. The influence of different shapes of nanoparticles on physicochemical properties of bi-layered photoactuators was investigated in order to determine swelling and deswelling properties, as well as volume phase transition temperature (VPTT). Incorporation of AuNRs into active layer of photoactuators leads to an increase of both swelling capacity and VPTT. The results obtained from compression measurements shows that mechanical properties of investigated systems depend on shape and concentration of incorporated gold nanorods. Moreover, the photo-thermo-mechanical effect induced by the visible light irradiation was visualized by bending deformation as a consequence of the energy conversion in the active layer

AB - A novel and favorable antibacterial agent as a combination of copper nanoparticles (CuNPs) and polypyrrole (PPy) is presented. By simple in situ polymerization method, copper/polypyrrole (Cu/PPy) nanocomposite with spherical CuNPs, around 25 nm in diameter, uniformly dispersed throughout PPy matrix with granular morphology, was characterized and subjected to determination of antibacterial activity toward bacteria Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus aureus. Knowing that when acting alone, CuNPs and PPy have already shown antimicrobial responce, their mutual and synergetic engagement against bacteria in this survey is somewhat expected. After a twenty-four-hour interaction with S. aureus, already 2 ppm of Cu/PPy with only 9.45 wt% content of Cu is acting almost completely cidal, with 99.17% of bacterial growth inhibition. Such nanocomposite could easily find application in water disinfection, soil sterilization and food preservation.

AB - Nanocomposites of gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) and conducting polymers, polypyrrole (PPy) and polyaniline (PANI), were prepared by simple oxidative polymerization of the corresponding monomer (pyrrole and aniline, respectively) by tetrachloroauric acid. Au nanospheres and nanorods were formed in the case of Au@PPy and Au@PANI, respectively. Detection of As(III) using Au@polymer was investigated where both nanocomposites showed similar activity for As electrooxidation in acidic media. The activity of Au@PPy was notably improved upon the addition of a small amount of conducting carbon, giving higher current densities compared to the commercial Au electrode. Further optimization of the operational conditions including electrolyte composition, deposition time and potential, was carried out to reach the limit of quantification as low as 2 ppb. Au@PPy nanocomposite proved to be suitable for sensing of As(III) in the presence of other ions, such as Cu(II). Furthermore, it proved to be suitable for As(III) sensing in real samples.

AB - Two silver–polyaniline/polyvinylpyrrolidone (Ag–PANI/PVP) nanocomposites were prepared using in situ integration of silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) during oxidative aniline polymerization, accelerated by the presence of PVP, which as well minimized the risk of particle agglomeration and macroscopic precipitation. Both nanocomposites have similar silver content (∼44 wt% Ag) but different morphological features of AgNPs (spheres/triangles) and polymers (granular/wrinkling pattern). Several spectroscopic, macroscopic, and analytical techniques, microscopy, and surface analysis methods have been used to analyze their physical and chemical properties. Investigation of their antimicrobial potential and possible application as an effective weapon against indicator microbial strains, E. coli, S. aureus, and C. albicans, has shown inhibition of microbial growth by more than 90%, even at low composite concentrations (5 ppm) and short contact time (4 h). A biosafety assessment of Ag–PANI/PVP that comprised testing the genotoxicity and redox modulating activity was performed using human peripheral blood cells as a model system. The obtained results have shown that the investigated Ag–PANI/PVP exhibited significant prooxidant and cytostatic effects (p < 0.05) with no apparent potential to induce DNA damage. Although precautions should be taken to protect human health, the significant antimicrobial efficiency of Ag–PANI/PVP makes it suitable for further studies and applications in non-medical areas, such as wastewater treatment.

AB - Soy isoflavone genistein (Gen) exerts beneficial effects against prostate cancer cells in vitro and in vivo. However, its use as a chemoprevention/therapeutic agent is largely limited due to its low bioavailability. In this study we synthesized two variants of a new delivery system, genistein–gold nanoparticles conjugates Gen@AuNPs1 and Gen@AuNPs2, by an environmentally friendly method, using a dual role of Gen to reduce Au3+ and stabilize the formed AuNPs, with no additional component. The formation of Gen@AuNPs was confirmed via UV–Vis spectroscopy, FTIR, and Raman spectra measurements. The spherical shape and uniform size of Gen@AuNPs1 and Gen@AuNPs2 (10 ± 2 and 23 ± 3 nm, respectively), were determined by transmission electron microscopy. The nano-conjugates also varied in hydrodynamic diameter (65.0 ± 1.7 and 153.0 ± 2.2 nm) but had similar negative zeta potential (−35.0 ± 2.5 and −37.0 ± 1.6 mV), as measured by dynamic light scattering. The Gen loading was estimated to be 46 and 48%, for Gen@AuNPs1 and Gen@AuNPs2, respectively. The antiproliferative activities of GenAuNPs were confirmed by MTT test in vitro on three malignant prostate carcinoma cell lines (PC3, DU 145, and LNCaP), while selectivity toward malignant phenotype was confirmed using non-cancerous MRC-5 cells. Flow cytometric analysis showed that the inhibition on cell proliferation of more potent Gen@AuNPs1 nano-conjugate is comparable with the effects of free Gen. In conclusion, the obtained results, including physicochemical characterization of newly synthesized AuNPs loaded with Gen, cytotoxicity, and IC50 assessments, indicate their stability and bioactivity as an antioxidant and anti-prostate cancer agent, with low toxicity against human primary cells. © 2021 Elsevier B.V.

AB - Nanocomposite materials based on conductive polymers and metal nanoparticles made an appearance as a new class of hybrid materials with considerable potential for application in different fields, from medical and food/wastewater treatments to catalysis and sensors. Besides their low cost and ease of preparation, their optical and mechanical characteristics are tunable, while individual features of each component become more obvious, and new ones appear. In this group of materials, newly, chemically synthesized Cobalt@Polypyrrole (Co@PPy) and Cobalt/Gold@Polypyrrole (Co/Au@PPy) nanocomposites could be classified. With low electrode potential, Co nanoparticles (CoNPs) are unstable, prone to oxidation and agglomeration. For this reason, both nanocomposites were synthesized under argon. Firstly, CoNPs were synthesized in water, by simple reduction of Co2+ by sodium borohydride and in the presence of sodium dodecyl sulfate as a surfactant that will stabilize formed Co nuclei and affect their further growth. After adding pyrrole monomer, the polymerization reaction was initiated by ammonium peroxydisulfate and Au3+ for Co@PPy and Co/Au@PPy, respectively. Together with pyrrole monomer oxidation to final polymer structure by Au3+, these ions are reduced by nitrogen atoms from secondary amino groups in pyrrole units, forming AuNPs incorporated throughout polymer matrix. Conductive form of both nanocomposites, i.e., the presence of bipolarons, was confirmed by UV-Vis and FTIR analysis, while FESEM showed granular morphologies. With both nanocomposites having satisfactory percentage of metals incorporated, it could be expected that such materials could find their place in the field of catalysis, direct borohydride fuel cell, or wastewater treatment, where heavy, toxic metals such As(III) is, represent a great danger for the environment.

abstract = "Nanocomposite materials based on conductive polymers and metal nanoparticles made an appearance as a new class of hybrid materials with considerable potential for application in different fields, from medical and food/wastewater treatments to catalysis and sensors. With both nanocomposites having satisfactory percentage of metals incorporated, it could be expected that such materials could find their place in the field of catalysis, direct borohydride fuel cell, or wastewater treatment, where heavy, toxic metals such As(III) is, represent a great danger for the environment.",

AB - In recent years, photoactuators as a class of smart materials that can produce a reversible mechanical deformation under light stimuli have attracted tremendous interest due to their potential applications in soft robotics, artificial muscles, and smart devices. Currently, the fabrication of photoactuators is mainly based on photothermal actuation mechanisms which include expansion/contraction, molecule sorption/desorption, and phase transition. Thermosensitive hydrogels with gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) are probably the most commonly used active layers that absorb light energy and convert it to thermal energy, causing reversible mechanical deformation such as bending, curling, and spiraling. This work describes hydrogel nanocomposite photoactuators based on AuNPs and thermosensitive poly(N-isopropylacrylamide) (Au-PNiPAAm), obtained by gamma irradiation. The different shapes of AuNPs were incorporated into PNiPAAm hydrogel, nanospheres with radius  5-10 nm and nanorods with aspect ratio  5 (radius  10 nm, length  50 nm). Swelling and deswelling kinetics of Au-PNiPAAm hydrogel nanocomposite photoactuators were investigated in water at 25C and 48C, respectively. All samples showed non-Fickian diffusion (both diffusion and polymer chains relaxation processes control the fluid transport) indicating that incorporation of different shapes of AuNPs into matrices has no influence on the diffusion model. On the other hand, the volume phase transition temperature (VPTT) of photoactuators can be adjusted by the incorporation of different shapes of AuNPs. It has been observed that VPTT decreases from  32.5C for Au nanorods to  30.5C for Au nanospheres, causing a more pronounced photothermal effect in the case of nanospheres.

AB - There is a need for developing new and perspective materials for oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) as one of the most essential reactions in the life processes, energy storage, and conversion, in order to exchange the most often used materials based on platinum supported/unsupported substrates, especially carbon supports. Herein, we present low-cost alternative electrode materials consisting of two silver@polyvinylpyrrolidone-polyaniline (Ag@PVP-PANI) nanocomposites that showed great potential as Pt-free ORR electrocatalysts. Simple and effective polymerization processes of aniline in the methanol, using PVP as shape-mediated stabilizator and stimulator of its oxidation by silver ions, led to the formation of nanocomposites with truncated triangular silver nanoparticles dispersed throughout granular and wrinkle-like surfaces of PANI matrix. The behavior of PVP chains in acidic conditions showed great influence on nanocomposites’ conductivities, regardless of the high silver content. Electrocatalytic survey of nanocomposites examined in alkaline media toward ORR pointed out their appreciable activities with high ORR onset potentials. Moreover, for the nanocomposite with lower silver content (18.9 wt. %), the four-electron ORR pathway was evidenced. © 2019 Elsevier B.V.

AB - The past few years have witnessed the tremendous potential and development of metal nanoparticles due to their strong optical absorption and scattering, an effect called localized surface plasmon resonance, which makes them useful in a wide spectrum of biomedical utilities such as imaging, sensing, drug delivery, gene targeting, and treatment of some cancers. This chapter highlights the Au, Ag, and Cu nanoparticles currently investigated in the field of health and medicine, focusing on individual and particularly polymer/organic molecule-functionalized nanoparticles-which is often employed to prevent them from agglomeration and oxidation, as well as for biofunctionalization. An overview of the synthesis, properties, and surface modifications of these nanomaterials, with particular attention to their challenges and perspectives for relevant biomedical applications, is provided. In addition to the citation of some recent advances in biomedicine, we draw attention to our study on these nanosystems that have biological or other related applications. © 2019 Elsevier Ltd. AB - Two gold nanorod-polyaniline (Au-PANI) composites with different contents of Au were prepared by two methods. An ex situ method, in the presence of preformed gold nanorods (AuNRs) and in situ one, when an AuNRs and PANI matrix is produced simultaneously, were used. Both methods were performed in immiscible water/toluene biphasic system as a simple interfacial polymerization process. Optical, structural and morphological characteristics of the formed nanocomposites were identified. It was found that AuNRs are embedded in the conducting emeraldine salt form of PANI. Nanocomposites containing 2.0 and 28.9 wt% of Au were subsequently systematically studied for borohydride oxidation reaction (BOR) for potential application in direct borohydride-peroxide fuel cell (DBPFC). Reaction parameters: number of electrons exchanged, order of reaction and activation energy, were evaluated. Both Au-PANI nanocomposites showed activity for BOR. A laboratory DBPFC was tested reaching specific peak power density of 184 Wg(-1) at 65 degrees C with Au-PANI 1 nanocomposite (containing only 2.0 wt% of Au) as anode.

AB - The adsorption of thiacyanine dye molecules on citrate-stabilized silver nanoparticle clusters drop-cast onto freshly cleaved mica or highly oriented pyrolytic graphite surfaces is examined using colocalized surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy and atomic force microscopy. The incidence of dye Raman signatures in photoluminescence hotspots identified around nanoparticle clusters is considered for both citrate- and borate-capped silver nanoparticles and found to be substantially lower in the former case, suggesting that the citrate anions impede the efficient dye adsorption. Rigorous numerical simulations of light scattering on random nanoparticle clusters are used for estimating the electromagnetic enhancement and elucidating the hotspot formation mechanism. The majority of the enhanced Raman signal, estimated to be more than 90%, is found to originate from the nanogaps between adjacent nanoparticles in the cluster, regardless of the cluster size and geometry. In the presence of polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP), which has an accelerating effect on the oxidation of aniline with silver nitrate, Ag nanoparticles (AgNPs) were in situ generated in aqueous solution during simultaneous formation of polyaniline (PANI), without any additional reducing agent or complicated treatment. We have demonstrated synthesis of three stabile Ag-PANI-PVP nanocomposites with different content, size, and morphology of Ag nanoparticles by varying the experimental parameters, such as pH and PVP concentration. As a result, this led to different Ag nanostructures (spherical and polyhedral NPs), and, consequently, different morphology of formed nanocomposites (granular and nanosheets). The physicochemical properties of nanocomposites were examined by using different analytical techniques (UV–Vis, TEM, FESEM, FT-IR, XRD, and Raman). It is found that optical properties, electrical conductivity and the content of Ag in the composites vary depending on the synthetic conditions. The electrocatalytic behavior of Ag-PANI-PVP nanocomposites was examined towards the oxygen reduction reaction in acidic and alkaline media. All tested nanocomposites showed high electrocatalytic activity, while the most active catalyst is the one with the highest electrical conductivity (≈0.6 S cm−1) and the lowest Ag content (3.4 wt%), synthesized in the solution without added acid. The simplicity of synthesis and good electrocatalytic efficiency of prepared nanocomposites combined with large-scale availability make them attractive as Pt-free electrocatalysts.

AB - Copper nanoparticles (Cu NPs) have proven to own excellent antimicrobial efficacy, but the problems of easy oxidation and aggregation limit their practical application. Here, nanocomposite based on polyaniline (PANI) and Cu NPs solved this problem and brought additional physicochemical properties that are markedly advantageous for antimicrobial applications. Current work exploits this potential, to examine its time- and concentration-dependent antimicrobial activity, employing E. coli, S. aureus, and C. albicans as a model microbial species. Regarding the presence of polaronic charge carriers in the fibrous polyaniline network, effects of Cu NPs’ size and their partially oxidized surfaces (the data were confirmed by HRTEM, FESEM, XRD, Raman and XPS analysis), as well as rapid copper ions release, Cu-PANI nanocomposite showed efficient bactericidal and fungicidal activities at the concentrations ≤1 ppm, within the incubation time of 2 h. Beside the quantitative analysis, the high levels of cellular disruption for all tested microbes were evidenced by atomic force microscopy. Moreover, the minimum inhibitory and bactericidal concentrations of the Cu-PANI nanocomposite were lower than those reported for other nanocomposites. Using such low concentrations is recognized as a good way to avoid its toxicity toward the environment. For this purpose, Cu-PANI nanocomposite is tested for its genotoxicity and influence on the oxidative status of the human cells in vitro.
