AB - As optical fibres are used ever more extensively in space applications, nuclear industry, medicine and high-energy physics experiments, it has become essential to investigate the influence of ionizing radiation on their characteristics. In this work, the radiation-induced attenuation at 530 nm is investigated experimentally in step-index multimode polymethyl-methacrylate plastic optical fibres exposed to low dose-rate gamma radiation. Cumulative doses ranged from 50 Gy to 500 Gy. The radiation induced attenuation has been empirically found to obey the power law RIA = aD(b), where D is the total radiation dose and a and b are the constants determined by fitting.

AB - In this work, we present the experimental study of the radiation-induced attenuation in step-index polymethyl-methacrylate based plastic optical fibre by exposure to low dose rate ionizing radiation. The low dose exposure has been found to induce significant permanent attenuation in plastic optical fibres. Based on the experimental results, the formula between radiation-induced attenuation and radiation dose is obtained accordingly. The recovery properties of plastic optical fibre also were investigated. The fibre begins to recover immediately after irradiation, but it does not fully recover, i.e. the irradiation leads to permanent damage of polymer. (C) 2012 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

AB - The timescale for emission of three fragments (Z GT = 8) in the 12.7 GeV He-4+U-238 reaction has been studied using a sandwich configuration of the Makrofol polycarbonate track detector. In events with varying multiplicity of heavy fragments (Z GT 20), the differences of the correlation functions for relative angle and relative velocity between pairs of fragments have been studied in order to determine the fragment emission timescale. A sequential decay mechanism for the excited residual nuclei was found to be consistent with experimental data. It was determined that the fragment emission time decreased with decreasing multiplicity of heavy fragments from 1200 +/- 80 fm c(-1) for events with two heavy fragments to 400 +/- 50 fm c(-1) for events with one heavy fragment.

AB - The Monte Carlo method is employed to calculate the geometrical efficiency of a multi-detector system for fragments produced in heavy ion reactions. This efficiency is defined as a quotient of the number of fragments intercepted by the system and the total number of fragments emitted by the fissioning nucleus in all directions. The multi-detector system consists of six parallel-plate avalanche counters in a hexagonal configuration around the target. Its geometrical efficiency was calculated with respect to the Ar-36 + U-238 reaction at a 7 MeV/u projectile energy.

AB - The processes of production of heavy fragments in the fission mass region in the interaction of 0.65, 1.74, 5.1, 8.8 and 12.7 GeV He-4 with Th-232 have been analyzed using the polycarbonate track detector Makrofol in the form of a sandwich. The decay channels ending with one, two, or more (three, four) fragments were detected. We have analyzed the events in which at least one heavy fragment (Z GT 20) was registered. Fragments produced in the experiment were identified and an event-by-event model-free analysis was performed in order to separate different production mechanisms. We have identified the events produced in fission, deep spallation and fragmentation processes. The cross-sections and experimental features have been determined for the various reaction mechanisms, and their variation as a function of the incident energy has been investigated. AB - We report the study of the reaction 15 MeV/nucleon U-238 + (197)AU, in, which up to 7 final heavy fragments have been detected, using a CR-39 plastic nuclear track detector. The measured multiplicity distributions indicate that the binary fission of one (U-like) or both (U-like and Au-like) primary products clearly dominates for peripheral and intermediate impact parameters exhausting more than 80% of the total cross section. Multifragment emission sets in for the most central collisions. Reactions with 3 heavy final fragments, accounting for half of the total cross section, have been analysed event-by-event after measuring the geometrical parameters of each detected track, assuming momentum conservation and using empirical range-energy-charge curves. Most of these ternary processes originate in a two-step mechanism: a initial peripheral projectile-target interaction plus a deep-inelastic process followed by the subsequent fission-like decay of one of the fragments (mainly the quasiprojectile). Indeed, the relative velocity between the two fastest fragments are clearly peaked at values close to the Viola systematics for the fission of a very-heavy nucleus.

The measured multiplicity distributions indicate that the binary fission of one (U-like) or both (U-like and Au-like) primary products clearly dominates for peripheral and intermediate impact parameters exhausting more than 80% of the total cross section. AB - The processes of production of fragments with Z greater than or equal to 8 in the interaction of 12.7 GeV He-4 with U, Pb, Au and Ag have been analyzed using the polycarbonate track detector Makrofol. The sandwich technique was used which enables direct observation of multiply charged fragment emission by a single nucleus. The decay channels ending with one, two, or more (three, four) fragments were detected. A classification scheme based on the multiplicity of heavy fragments with Z GT 20 was used in order to identify the events belonging to the different reaction channels. The cross sections, excitation energies and multiplicities of intermediate-mass fragments 8 less than or equal to Z less than or equal to 20 have been determined for the various reaction mechanisms, and their variation as a function of the target mass has been investigated.

Cross sections, excitation energies and multiplicities of intermediate mass fragments (8 less than or equal to Z less than or equal to 20) have been evaluated for various reaction mechanisms. The experimental features of the fragmentation process have been analyzed as a function of the target mass.
