AB - We consider the properties of the large acoustic polarons in a media composed of three parallel coupled identical macromolecular chains in an equilateral triangular arrangement. The existence of the truly three-dimensional large polarons has been demonstrated. Their appearance demands the complex interference of the effects of the reduced dimensionality, the nature and strength of the interchain coupling and particular geometrical arrangement of molecular chains. Different types of solutions were found and criteria for their existence were formulated in terms of the dimensionless interchain coupling parameter. (C) 2016 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

AB - We study the properties of the single large adiabatic polaron in the substances composed of three parallel equally separated coplanar molecular chains. Particular attention has been devoted to the influence of the interchain coupling strength on polaron stability in order to elucidate the origin of the large polaron existence, which, contrary to the predictions of continuum adiabatic theories may persist in realistic conditions. Our results indicate the existence of the effectively two-dimensional stationary polarons with comparably large longitudinal radius while the transverse one ranges from zero, in the absence of interchain coupling, to approximately twice of the interchain separation when coupling strength tends towards the infinity. These two-dimensional polarons are both energetically and dynamically stable. This is quite the opposite to the expectations based on the traditional adiabatic large polaron theories which, in the case of short ranged electron phonon interaction, predict that the stable large polaron may exist only in 1D systems. Stability of these 2D polarons increases with the increase of the interchain coupling strength so that they may be comparably more stable than the pure 1D polarons. (C) 2015 Elsevier Ltd. AB - We examine the effects of the interchain coupling on the properties of the large adiabatic polaron in the two chain model. In dependence of the strength of the interchain coupling (gamma) two different types of polaron solutions were found. In the weak coupling regime (gamma LT 1/2), polaron is confined to a single chain. As coupling increases continual transition towards the delocalization takes place - polaron amplitudes on both chains gradually become equalized, in the same time, its binding energy vanishes. Finally, above the critical coupling strength, polaron is fully delocalized - equally distributed over the both chains while its energy lies within the band of free states. Our the most specific prediction is the substantial impact of the polaron motion on its character. This implies the emergence of the two different regimes in charge transfer processes which may be experimentally verified. (C) 2013 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

AB - Properties of the large acoustic polarons in discrete molecular chains have been investigated within the adiabatic approximation. It turns out that practically all the polaron features are determined by the single parameter-coupling constant which represents the ratio between the small polaron binding energy and the electron bandwidth. Three different types of stationary solutions were found corresponding to weak, intermediate, and strong coupling limits, respectively. In the weak coupling regime, that is, for the values of coupling constant exceeding the limit of the applicability of continuum approximation but lower than the critical one ( $g_C$), we observe symmetric bond-centered solution corresponding to the polaron positioned in the middle between the adjacent lattice sites. When coupling constant overgrows, this critical value transition toward the site-centered state occurs. It takes place continuously through the intermediate asymmetric state whose position gradually approaches lattice site as coupling constant increases. One of the main consequences of the lattice discreteness is the emergence of the periodic potential, Peierls-Nabarro potential relief, through which polarons have to pass to transfer along the chain. The conditions for the polaron propagation are formulated in terms of the threshold velocity. (c) 2012 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.

AB - Large adiabatic polarons in anisotropic crystals in the presence of constant magnetic field have been studied within the Holstein molecular crystal model in the continuum approximation. It was shown that magnetic field directed along the symmetry axis induces transverse confinement which may stabilize large polarons. They represent localized (soliton-like) nonlinear structure uniformly propagating along the symmetry axis and rotating around it in the same time. Such objects exist in 3D lattice provided that coupling constant and magnetic field do not exceed certain critical values. In contrast with pure 1D systems existence of large polarons is possible in a quite wider region of the values of coupling constant which may attain considerably higher values than in the pure 1D media. Furthermore, polaron effective mass, depending on the intensity of the applied magnetic field, may be considerably lighter than that of the the pure 1D polarons for the same values of coupling constant. This is the most significant difference with respect to pure 1D systems in the absence of magnetic field and may have substantial impact on polaron transport properties.

AB - Temperature dependence of the effective tunneling frequency of the spin-phonon model for a few particular types of coupling has been studied within the framework of the simple variational method. Our analysis shows that for the Ohmic type of coupling, temperature drives the system towards delocalization. The same type of behavior has been noticed for super-Ohmic case, but in the so-called adiabatic regime, while in the nonadiabatic case we predict localization transition, analogous to that observed for Ohmic coupling, when temperature dependent coupling constant S(T) approaches critical value S(T) similar to 1/2. In contrast to these results, for super-Ohmic (r = 3) case, there was no substantial difference with respect to zero-temperature case. Brief discussion of the validity of the method has been given. AB - The possible formation of solitons in a Frenkel exciton system, with exciton-exciton interaction only, is studied taking into account the Pauli character of exciton operators. This is realized by choosing the trial function of the system in the of the spin coherent state for spin 1/2. Possible solutions include both bright and dark solitons. Strict conditions for the existence and stability of particular types of soliton are formulated by imposing limitations on the values of the system parameters and soliton velocity. The energy-momentum relation for both types of solution is obtained. It is concluded that neither kind of soliton can exist if the effective dynamical interaction is a repulsive one. Recent references concerning bright and dark solitons are critically assessed.

AB - The dressing effect due to the quantum nature of phonons may cause the creation of bound states of several vibrons in the molecular chain. The possibility of creating soliton states of this type is discussed for the simple Frohlich one-dimensional model. The regions of the system parameter space where different mechanisms dominate the behaviour of such entities are characterized.

AB - The existence of a two-vibron (amide-I quanta) bound state has been examined within the framework of a two-site realization of the Davydov model. The parameter space of the system is divided into two regions where the nature of pairing and the character of bound states are determined by the quite different physical mechanisms, The validity of the semiclassical approximation was discussed.

On the relevance of self-trapping as the mechanism for charge and energy transfer In biological systems

AB - The concept that polarons and solitons may play a crucial role as the underlying transport agents in biological structures has been critically re-examined on the basis of the general theory of self-trapping (ST) phenomena. The conditions determining the existence and stability of polarons and solitons, and their character as a function of the values of the basic physical parameters of the system, were formulated. It was found that Davydovs soliton model cannot explain the intramolecular energy transfer in the alpha-helix and acetanilide, and an alternative formulation in terms of the so-called Takeno model is more realistic. However, Davydovs theory is sufficiently flexible to describe electron transfer in the alpha-helix and acetanilide.
