AB - Streptococcus pneumoniae, the pneumococcus is an important human pathogen. It possesses a capsule which has been thoroughly studied, since it is an important factor in virulence. In this work S. pneumoniae ATCC 6301, belonging to Serogroup 1, was used as a model organism to determine the levels of different IgG isotypes specific to this bacterium in different sex and age groups. For this purpose an in‐house ELISA was used. Although IgG2 is a major antibacterial antibody subclass, acting against polysaccharide antigens, the level of pneumococcus‐specific IgG2 did not differ from the level of IgG2 specific to several tested lactic acid bacteria (LAB). On the other hand pneumococcus specific IgG1 level was significantly higher to the level of LAB specific IgG1. This is most likely a consequence of previous encounters with pathogenic pneumococcal microorganism and a distinguishing characteristic of this encounter. By analyzing different sex and age groups we found significantly lower anti‐pneumococcus IgG1 levels in men, implying lower protection against invasion with pneumococcus, which possibly translates to other encapsulated bacteria. The Covid‐19 pandemic has identified males as being at increased risk of hospital admission and death and lower levels of anti‐pneumococcus antibodies might be a contributing factor. Hence, we advocate the immunization with conjugate pneumococcal vaccines in male individuals, especially over the age of 50.

AB - The aim of this study was to highlight the possibility of using the air RF plasma for fiber surface activation that can facilitate the deposition of silver nanoparticles from colloid onto the polyester fabrics and thus, enhance their antibacterial properties. The deposition of silver nanoparticles caused significant morphological changes as well as the color change of polyester fabrics. Untreated polyester fabrics and polyester fabrics activated by air RF plasma, both, subsequently modified by silver nanoparticles exhibited excellent antibacterial properties against Gram-negative bacterium E. coli and Gram-positive bacterium S. aureus. However, polyester fabrics activated by plasma provided better laundering durability of achieved effects.

AB - Global trends in the textile industry are shifted towards manufacturing of high-added value
products such as medical, protective and smart textiles [1]. The recent production growth in these
areas renewed the interest for antibacterial finishing of textile materials. Simultaneously, the
great progress in development of controlled synthesis of nanoparticles (NPs) and their numerous
potential applications opened up new possibilities for engineering the advanced properties of
textile materials [2-3]. Various nanometer-sized metal and metal oxide particles can provide
antibacterial properties [4-9], but silver NPs seem to be particularly attractive due to excellent
antibacterial efficiency of silver itself known for a long time. The application of silver
nanoparticles in the antibacterial finishing of textiles is favorable due to their stability and high
surface to volume ratio, which provides significant bactericidal efficiency.
This study was aimed to highlight the possibility of using the corona treatment for fibre surface
activation, which can facilitate the efficient loading of silver NPs from colloid onto the
polyamide (PA) fabrics creating the stable composite system with improved antibacterial
properties. Bactericidal efficiency and laundering durability of silver loaded fabrics against
Gram-positive bacterium Staphylococcus aureus and Gram-negative bacterium Escherichia coli
were evaluated. Elsewhere, the influence of silver NPs on color change of fabrics dyed with acid
dye C.I. acid green 25 and disperse dye C.I. disperse blue 3 was studied, too. Additionally, the
influence of dyeing on antibacterial efficiency of silver loaded fabrics was determined.

AB - In this study, antimicrobial efficiency and its laundering durability on cotton and polyester fabrics loaded with colloidal Ag nanoparticles was evaluated. The influence of the presence of Ag nanoparticles on the color change of dyed fabrics and the influence of dyeing on antimicrobial efficiency of Ag loaded fabrics was determined. Despite the low content of Ag nanoparticles detected in the cotton and polyester fabrics, the extraordinary antibacterial and antifungal efficiency was obtained. Ag loaded cotton fabrics exhibited significantly better laundering durability compared to polyester fabrics. In both cases, the color of dyed fabrics was affected by the Ag loading.
