AB - Composites of carbons with metal oxides and metal sulfides have attracted a lot of interestas materials for energy conversion and storage applications. Herein, we report on novel N,O-dopedcarbon/ZnO/ZnS and N,O-doped carbon/ZnO composites (generally named C-(MOF-5/PANI)),synthesized by the carbonization of metal–organic framework MOF-5/polyaniline (PANI) composites. The produced C-(MOF-5/PANI)s are comprehensively characterized in terms of composition, molecular and crystalline structure, morphology, electrical conductivity, surface area, and electrochemicalbehavior. The composition and properties of C-(MOF-5/PANI) composites are dictated bythe composition of MOF-5/PANI precursors and the form of PANI (conducting emeraldine salt (ES)or nonconducting emeraldine base). The ZnS phase is formed only with the PANI-ES form due toS-containing counter-ions. XRPD revealed that ZnO and ZnS existed as pure wurtzite crystallinephases. PANI and MOF-5 acted synergistically to produce C-(MOF-5/PANI)s with high SBET (up to609 m2 g−1), electrical conductivity (up to 0.24 S cm−1), and specific capacitance, Cspec, (up to 238.2 Fg−1 at 10 mV s−1). Values of Cspec commensurated with N content in C-(MOF-5/PANI) composites (1–10 wt.%) and overcame Cspec of carbonized individual components PANI and MOF-5. By acid etchingtreatment of C-(MOF-5/PANI), SBET and Cspec increased to 1148 m2 g−1 and 341 F g−1, respectively. The developed composites represent promising electrode materials for supercapacitors.

AB - The environmental application of the carbonized composites of the Zn-containing metal-organic framework MOF-5 and polyaniline (PANI) in its emeraldine salt and base forms (C-(MOF-5/PANI)) was investigated for the first time. Textural properties and particle size distributions revealed that composites are dominantly mesoporous and nanoscale in nature, while Raman spectroscopy revealed the ZnO phase beneath the carbon matrix. Adsorption of pesticide, dye, and metal cation on C-(MOF-5/PANI) composites in aqueous solutions was evaluated and compared with the behavior of the precursor components, carbonized MOF-5 (cMOF), and carbonized PANIs. A lower MOF-5 content in the precursor, a higher specific surface area, and the pore volume of the composites led to improved adsorption performance for acetamiprid (124 mg/g) and Methylene Blue (135 mg/g). The presence of O/N functional groups in composites is essential for the adsorption of nitrogen-rich pollutants through hydrogen bonding with an estimated monolayer capacity twice as high as that of cMOF. The proton exchange accompanying Cd2+ retention was associated with the Zn/Cd ion exchange, and the highest capacity (9.8 mg/g) was observed for the composite synthesized from the precursor with a high MOF-5 content. The multifunctionality of composites was evidenced in mixtures of pollutants where noticeably better performance for Cd2+ removal was found for the composite compared to cMOF. Competitive binding between three pollutants favored the adsorption of pesticide and dye, thereby hindering to some extent the ion exchange necessary for the removal of metal cations. The results emphasize the importance of the PANI form and MOF-5/PANI weight ratio in precursors for the development of surface, porosity, and active sites in C-(MOF-5/PANI) composites, thus guiding their environmental efficiency. The study also demonstrated that C-(MOF-5/PANI) composites retained studied pollutants much better than carbonized precursor PANIs and showed comparable or better adsorption ability than cMOF.

AB - Worldwide water bodies have been affected by toxic effluents of industries, such as organic compounds, and are continuously deteriorating the environment as industrialization coupled with urbanization has caused the excess release of wastewater. Finding a proper wastewater treatment is of the greatest importance. Gamma irradiation technique, as one of the advanced oxidation techniques, has been widely investigated as a technique for degradation of organic molecules. It has been shown that this method has the potential to be effectively applied for degradation of toxic colorants which show high persistence to degradation. Although the literature abounds with degradation studies of different organic molecules using a wide range of irradiation dozes and doze rates, according to available data, no such irradiation facility exists, mostly due to high doses and expensive equipment needed to be installed. A mechanism of degradation was proposed: generated reactive species non-specifically react with organic compounds leading to their partial or complete degradation. In recent advances, gamma irradiation was coupled with other wastewater treatment technologies to reduce needed doses. Coupling of gamma irradiation was achieved with addition of oxidants which resulted in increased number of reactive species, then coupling with solid matrices, biological treatment, which all lead to additional destabilization of organic molecules. This way, combining different methods of wastewater purification opens new possibilities and may enable the design of a new modular, or even mobile, plant that will satisfy all the needs for its wide commercial application. As a result, a sustainable development goal can be more easily reachable, i.e., sustainable water resources management in future industrial zones and smart cities may be possible without generation of waste transfer into another media.

AB - This study aimed to develop a fast and reliable protocol for Trinitrophenol-Tris(hydroxymethyl)aminomethane (TNP-Tris) detection applying a beta-lactamase-fusion protein of choice, the natural product-based immunoreagent tool of competitive sensitivity developed herein for the first time. Since the fusion protein 11B3-scFv-beta-lactamase is constructed from a scFv-antibody (11B3) linked to an enzyme (beta-lactamase), the step related to the use of secondary antibody in the enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) is completely omitted. Indeed, this fusion protein itself serves both as binding mean of the antigen model and detecting agent, due to the presence of the naturally occurring enzyme. In such a way, it actually affords the one-step TNP-Tris detection reaching a promising LOD value of 45 +/- 2 fmol or 157 +/- 6 pg/mL. Taken all together, the current protocol does represent much cheaper and significantly less-time consuming alternative compared both to the recombinant antibodies and recombinant phages, previously designed means in our labs for the same purpose. AB - This work presents a study of the applicability of laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy (LIBS), based on Infrared Transversally Excited Atmospheric CO2 pulsed laser (TEA CO2), to determine nickel, cobalt, and chromium in a window glass samples. Estimated limits of detection (LODs) for Ni, Co, and Cr, were 2.1, 3.2, and 0.4 ppm, respectively. In addition, two main plasma parameters, electron number density and temperature, were determined to characterize the laser-induced plasma. The electron number density (Ne) was determined from the measured Stark width of the Al I 396.15 nm line, and the intensity ratio of two atomic iron lines (342.71 nm and 344.06 nm) was used to determine the excitation temperature (Texc). The obtained values were Ne= 8.3·1016 cm-3 and Texc= 7700 K.

AB - The application of laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy (LIBS) for the elemental analysis of pig shoulder bone samples is reported. Measurements were performed using a compact laboratory-made TEA CO2 laser with low pulse energy. The recorded spectra consisted of well-defined lines of atoms and single charged ions of Ca, Mg, P, and other constituent elements, with a good signal-to-noise ratio suitable for spectrochemical analysis. Based on the ICP quantitative analysis of the bone sample, the limits of detection of LIBS analysis were estimated for Mg (16 ppm) and Na (940 ppm). Plasma parameters, temperature, and electron number density were determined by measuring Stark widths and relative intensities of the C and Mg ionic and atomic spectral lines.

AB - Composites of metal organic framework MOF-5 and conjugated polymer polyaniline (PANI) were synthesized for the first time. Two procedures, which avoid humidity during the synthesis in order to preserve the structure of MOF-5, were applied. In the first one, dissolved part of nonconducting emeraldine base form of PANI (PANI-EB) in N,N΄-dimethylformamide was mixed with MOF-5 in different mass ratios. In the second one, the composites were prepared mechano-chemically, by using powdered conducting emeraldine salt form of PANI (PANI-ES) and solid MOF-5, mixed in chloroform in different mass ratios. The composites were characterized by various techniques: scanning electron microscopy (SEM), FTIR spectroscopy, nitrogen sorption and electrical conductivity measurements, XRD, and flame atomic absorption spectroscopy (FAAS). The procedure which used PANI-EB led to microporous PANI/MOF-5 composites with very high BET specific surface area, SBET (the highest value SBET of c.a. 2700 m2 g−1, even higher than SBET of starting pure MOF-5, showed the composite which contains 89 wt.% of MOF-5) and low conductivity (∼10-7 S cm−1). The second procedure which used PANI-ES gave microporous PANI/MOF-5 composites which showed moderate conductivities (the highest conductivity of 1.0 ⋅ 10−3 S cm-1 exhibited the composite which contains 25 wt.% of MOF-5) and also high SBET values, but lower than those measured for the composites with PANI-EB (the highest SBET of c.a. 850 m2 g-1 showed the composite of PANI doped with HCl which contains c.a. 77 wt.% of MOF-5). XRD measurements confirmed that predominately cubic crystalline structure of MOF-5 was present in almost all composites. © 2020 Elsevier B.V.

AB - A promising method for removal of Cs ions from water and their incorporation into stable crystal structure ready for safe and permanent disposal was described. Cs-exchanged X zeolite was hot-pressed at temperature ranging from 800 to 950 °C to fabricate dense pollucite ceramics. It was found that the application of external pressure reduced the pollucite formation temperature. The effect of sintering temperature on density, phase composition and mechanical properties was investigated. The highest density of 92.5 %TD and the highest compressive strength of 79 MPa were measured in pollucite hot-pressed at 950 °C for 3 h. Heterogeneity of samples obtained at 950 °C was determined using scanning electron microscopy. The pollucite hot-pressed at 950 °C had low linear thermal expansion coefficient of ∼4.67 × 10−6 K−1 in the temperature range from 100 to 1000 °C. © 2019

AB - Efficient and simple room temperature synthesis of pure phase metal-organic framework MOF-5 has been developed, based on the use of anhydrous zinc acetate, Zn(OAc)2, as a precursor, instead of zinc acetate dihydrate. Crucial influence of water on a reaction pathway was revealed. In order to obtain MOF-5, different amounts of water have been added into the solutions of Zn(OAc)2 in N,N-dimethylformamide (DMF) to prepare in situ zinc acetate hydrates with 0.25, 0.5, and 1.0 mol of water. Commercially available zinc acetate dihydrate was also used as a precursor for comparison. These solutions were mixed at room temperature with the solution of 1,4-benzenedicarboxylic acid in DMF in the absence of any base. Based on XRD, FTIR, and SEM measurements, it was shown that the optimal amount of water for the synthesis of completely pure, crystalline phase MOF-5 is 0.25–0.5 mol of water per one mole of Zn. The reaction systems with 1.0 and 2.0 mol of water per one mole of Zn also led to solids with MOF-5 as the dominant phase, but they also contain small amounts of another phase, formed due to the decomposition (hydrolysis) and/or distortion of the MOF-5 framework in the presence of excess amounts of water. The product synthesized in the system without any added water contains MOF-5 phase in a very small amount, while main phase is zinc 1,4-benzenedicarboxylate and/or zinc hydrogen 1,4-benzenedicarboxylate. Regular cubic submicro/microcrystal morphology exhibited the samples synthesized using 0.5 and 0.25 mol water per one mole of Zn (pure MOF-5), while for the samples synthesized at mole ratios H2O/Zn2+ = 1.0 and 2.0 other particle shapes are also seen. By nitrogen sorption measurements it was found that the highest values of BET specific surface area (1937 m2 g−1), micropore volume (0.83 cm3 g−1), and micropore area (1590 m2 g−1) showed MOF-5 prepared at mole ratio H2O/Zn2+ = 0.5, while the highest yield of MOF-5 is obtained with the theoretical mole ratio H2O/Zn2+ = 0.25. Thermal stability of synthesized materials was investigated by TGA. © 2018 Elsevier Inc.

AB - Natural filtration material tuff (T) was modified by coating with nano-sized magnetite. The grain fraction of 0.6–1.9 mm was submitted to hydrothermal synthesis of magnetite. Thus formed magnetite modified tuff (MMT) was characterized in terms of Fe-content, N2 adsorption- desorption isotherm, SEM, zeta potential-pH analyses and adsorption behavior towards phosphates/arsenates in batch and column conditions. Elemental analysis showed that 36.54 mg g−1 of magnetite was attached to the porous tuff grains. This modification changed pore structure and specific surface area. An increase of cca 35% in Sp value was obtained. Batch experiments proved that MMT was 4-5 times more efficient in removal of phosphates/arsenates than non-modified T. The maximum sorption capacities of phosphates calculated based on Langmuir equation were 0.45 and 1.91 mg g−1, while those for arsenate were 0.551 m g−1 and 2.36 mg g−1 for T and MMT, respectively. The intra-particle diffusion model was the most suited for describing the adsorption process of phosphate and arsenate onto MMT. Fixed-bed column data corroborated batch results, i.e. MMT was 6 times superior in contaminant adsorption than T. Modification with magnetite improved T potential for usage in water treatment applications: its filtration ability remained unchanged, while adsorption capacity for phosphates/arsenates removal was improved. © 2019 The Society of Powder Technology Japan

AB - This study is focused on determination of the
activity concentration of radionuclides (210Pb, 238U,
235U, 226Ra, 232Th i 40K) and concentration of heavy
metals (Pb, Mn i Zn) in surface layer of soil around
coal-fired power plant "Kostolac A". The techniques
used to analyze of mentioned radionuclides and heavy
metals are gamma spectometry and atomic absorption
spectrometry, respectively. The mean values of activity
concentrations of investigated radionuclides,
expressed as Bq/kg, were: 76.7 for 210Pb, 67.2 for 238U,
4.1 for 235U, 29 for 226Ra, 50.1 for 232Th and 611 for
40K. The mean concentrations of heavy metals,
expressed as mg/kg, were 28 for Pb, 775.4 for Mn and
105.5 for Zn. The obtained results indicated that
operation of the coal fired power plant has no
significant negative impact on the surrounding
environment with regard to the content of investigated
radionuclides and heavy metals

AB - Two mechanical extraction techniques were used for the extraction of environmentaly interesting components of coal fly ash: shaking, during which the extraction process lasted from 6 up to 24 h, and sonication that lasted from 15 up to 60 min, using water as extractant. The concentration of anions in fly ash extracts was determined by ion chromatography, while atomic absorption spectrometry was used for determination of: As, Pb, Cd, Ni, Cr, Zn, Cu, Fe, Mn and Al. The ultrasonication yielded slightly higher amounts of extracted anions as well as Pb, Al, Mn and Fe cations, while shaking-assisted extraction was more efficient for the Cr, As, Zn and Ni ions. The changes in pH value, particle size distribution within colloid solution, zeta potential and conductivity during ultrasound-assisted extraction were measured in order to explain changes that occur on the surface of fly ash particles contacting water and different processes (adsorption, ion exchange and flocculation) that develop under natural conditions. Principal Component Analysis was used for assessing the effect of observed process parameters. It is essential to evaluate quantity of these elements leachable from coal fly ash into the surface waters in natural conditions in order to prevent contamination of the environment.

AB - Cesium aluminosilicate phases are of the great interest as possible host for Cs immobilization in radioactive waste management. The possibility to use zeolite as a host material for radioactive Cs immobilization was investigated. Cs-exchanged forms of clinoptilolite and 13X which were prepared by ion-exchange treatment were compacted. The powders compacts of exchanged zeolites were thermally treated at 1200 °C. The XRD analysis showed that Cs was successfully immobilized after heat treatment by formation of stable cesium-aluminosilicate ceramic forms. Thermal and mechanical properties of the sintered samples were investigated. From the perspective of these characteristics, Cs-exchanged zeolite (clinoptilolite and 13 X) can be considered as a potential material for safe waste disposal.
