Infrared Photoluminescence of Nd-Doped Sesquioxide and Fluoride Nanocrystals: A Comparative Study

AB  - Lanthanide ions possess various emission channels in the near-infrared region that are well known in bulk crystals but are far less studied in samples with nanometric size. In this work, we present the infrared spectroscopic characterization of various Nd-doped fluoride and sesquioxide nanocrystals, namely Nd:Y2O3, Nd:Lu2O3, Nd:Sc2O3, Nd:YF3, and Nd:LuF3. Emissions from the three main emission bands in the near-infrared region have been observed and the emission cross-sections have been calculated. Moreover, another decay channel at around 2 μm has been observed and ascribed to the 4F3/2→4I15/2 transition. The lifetime of the 4F3/2 level has been measured under LED pumping. Emission cross-sections for the various compounds are calculated in the 1 μm, 900 nm, and 1.3 μm regions and are of the order of 10−20 cm2 in agreement with the literature results. Those in the 2 μm region are of the order of 10−21 cm2.

Optical properties of copper helical nanostructures: the effect of thickness on the SPR peak position

AB  - In this study, we have investigated the effect of thickness on the structural and optical properties of copper (Cu) helical nanostructures. Thin films with thicknesses of 160 nm, 280 nm, 450 nm, and 780 nm were obtained by e-beam glancing angle deposition. The morphology and the microstructure were studied by field emission scanning electron microscopy, x-ray diffraction and transmission electron microscopy, while for the optical analysis measurements spectroscopic ellipsometry was used. The results show that the deposited structures are porous with nanometer-sized crystallites preferentially oriented along (111) planes, as well as that the diameter of the helices increases with thickness. Detailed analyses of optical properties have demonstrated that the dielectric function of Cu structures is greatly influenced by the films thicknesses. With increasing thickness from 160 nm to 780 nm, the surface plasmon resonance peak was shifted from 1.31 eV to 1.05 eV, which was correlated with the growth mechanism and the size of deposited nanostructures.

AB  - Copper (Cu) thin films were deposited by using glancing angle deposition in the form of zigzag and square spiral nanostructures. Thin films were fabricated under different azimuthal rotations (φ = 180°, 90°, 45°, 22.5° and 11°), to the thickness of approximately 300 nm. Morphological, chemical and structural properties were investigated by field-emission scanning electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and high-resolution transmission electron microscopy. For the optical characterization of the samples spectroscopic ellipsometry was used, while the electrical properties were analyzed by four-point probe method. It was found that as the azimuthal rotation decreases, deposited nanostructures become more porous with larger number of grown arms. Both, optical and electrical analyses revealed that the properties of the obtained thin films are significantly influenced by growth mechanism. By decreasing the φ parameter, the surface plasmon resonance peak was shifted from 1038.9 nm to 1676.6 nm, which can be correlated with the porosity of Cu structures. Besides, it was found that the optical and electrical properties of the thin films are also strongly dependent on the concentration of defects.

AB  - Escin is an amphiphilic and weakly acidic drug that oral administration may lead to the irritation of gastric mucosa. The entrapment of escin into chitosan (CH)/xanthan gum (XG)-based polyelectrolyte complexes (PECs) can facilitate controlled drug release which may be beneficial for the reduction of its side effects. This study aimed to investigate the influence of escin content and drying method on the formation, physicochemical, and controlled, pH-dependent drug release properties of CH/XG-based PECs. Measurements of transmittance, con- ductivity, and rheological characterization confirmed the formation of CH/XG-based PECs with escin entrapped at escin-to-polymers mass ratios 1:1, 1:2, and 1:4. Ambient-dried PECs had higher yield, entrapment efficiency, and escin content in comparison with spray-dried ones. FT-IR spectra confirmed the interactions between CH, XG, and escin, which were stronger in ambient-dried PECs. PXRD and DSC analyses showed the amorphous escin character in all dry PECs, regardless of the drying method. The most promising controlled and pH-dependent in vitro escin release was from the ambient-dried PEC at the escin-to-polymers mass ratio of 1:1. For that reason and due to the highest yield and entrapment efficiency, this carrier has the potential to prevent the irritation of gastric mucosa after oral administration of escin.

Influence of Rare Earth Oxide Concentration on Electrochemical Co-Deposition of Nd and Pr from NdF3-PrF3-LiF Based Melts

AB  - The impact of rare earth oxide (REO) concentration on the deposition process and selective recovery of the metal being deposited from a molten fluoride salt system was investigated by applying deposition of Nd and Pr and varying the concentration of REO added to the electrolyte. A ternary phase diagram for the liquidus temperature of the NdF3-PrF3-LiF system was constructed to better predict the optimal electrolyte constitution. Cyclic voltammetry was used to record three redox signals, reflecting the processes involving Nd(III)/Nd and Pr(III)/Pr transformations. A two-step red/ox process for Nd(III) ions and a single-step red/ox process for Pr(III) ions were confirmed by square-wave voltammetry. The cyclic voltammetry results indicated the possibility of neodymium and praseodymium co-deposition. In order to sustain higher co-deposition rates on the cathode and to avoid increased production of PFC greenhouse gases on the anode, a low-overpotential deposition technique was used for Nd and Pr electrodeposition from the electrolyte with varying Nd2O3 and Pr6O11 concentrations. Co-deposited neodymium and praseodymium metals were characterized by electron probe microanalysis (EPMA) and X-ray diffraction (XRD) analysis. After electrodeposition, concentration profiles of neodymium and praseodymium were recorded, starting from the cathode surface towards the electrolyte bulk. The working temperature of 1050 °C of the molten fluoride salt basic electrolyte, in line with the constructed phase diagram, was validated by improved co-deposition and led to a more effective deposition process.

Co-deposited neodymium and praseodymium metals were characterized by electron probe microanalysis (EPMA) and X-ray diffraction (XRD) analysis. After electrodeposition, concentration profiles of neodymium and praseodymium were recorded, starting from the cathode surface towards the electrolyte bulk. The working temperature of 1050 °C of the molten fluoride salt basic electrolyte, in line with the constructed phase diagram, was validated by improved co-deposition and led to a more effective deposition process.",

AB  - Polyelectrolyte complexes (PECs) are attractive carriers with recognized potential toenhance oral delivery of poorly soluble high-dosed low-molecular-weight drugs. The formulationof solid oral dosage forms requires the drying of PECs, which may affect their physicochemicaland biopharmaceutical properties. The aim of this study was to investigate the effect of spray-drying on the properties of ibuprofen-loaded chitosan/xanthan gum PECs and to assess the drugrelease kinetics from such PECs filled into hard capsules in comparison with corresponding PECswhich are dried under ambient conditions. The yield, ibuprofen content, entrapment efficiency,and residual moisture content of spray-dried PECs were lower than those of ambient-dried PECs.Better flowability of spray-dried PECs was attributed to the almost spherical particle shape,shown by scanning electron microscopy. DSC and PXRD analysis confirmed the amorphizationof ibuprofen during spray-drying. All the investigated PECs, obtained by drying under ambientconditions as well as by spray-drying, had high rehydration capacity both in 0.1 M hydrochloricacid (pH 1.2) and phosphate buffer pH 7.4. In vitro ibuprofen release from dried PECs wascontrolled during 12 h with the release of approximately 30% of entrapped ibuprofen. Spray-driedPECs provided better control of ibuprofen diffusion from the carrier compared to the ambient-dried ones.

Multispectral electromagnetic shielding and mechanical properties of carbon fabrics reinforced by silver deposition

AB  - Electromagnetic interference (EMI) has become a widespread modern environmental pollutant. There is an essential need for practical and applicable materials for its attenuation. Therefore, the presented research has focused on metallization of carbon fabric using the silver conductive complex solution to enhance the surface conductivity and mechanical properties of the fabric. With this amplification and improving the mentioned characteristics, lightweight and flexible modified carbon fibers can be applied in many environments. The modification has been performed in three steps: the silver conductive complex synthesis, carbon fabric immersion into a silver complex solution, treating with temperature for silver deposition by annealing. The method used for the metallization of carbon fabrics surface does not require expensive and toxic chemicals or electricity, making the process more ecologically and economically acceptable. One of the advantages of using the method for surface modification is the possibility of usage for other materials, not only for textiles and foils. The examination of the surface structure, electrical, EMI shielding characteristics, and mechanical properties of carbon fabrics modified by silver deposition contributes to the determination of multifunctional properties of materials. Also, the dependence on the improvement of multispectral electromagnetic interference shielding effectiveness (EMI SE) characteristics and mechanical properties of materials on the number of cycles has been determined. The most effective material was carbon fabric modified by five cycles, and average attenuation at an L and S bands was 49.67 dB, and a part of C and full X band was 51.07 dB, caused by better coverage by silver particles, increased density and porosity of deposited layer. Increasing the number of silver deposition cycles improves the physical properties of the modified carbon fabrics, where after five cycles the highest maximum force has been measured (2.26 kN). The material's morphology was studied by scanning electron microscopy with Energy-Dispersive X-ray Spectroscopy. The crystallographic phases of sintered particles were determined by X-ray diffraction. The crystallographic phases of sintered particles were determined by X-ray diffraction.

AB  - Di(meth)acrylate (D(M)A) systems with pendant oligo(ethylene glycol) (OEG) chains are promising biomedical candidates. Homopolymeric P(OEG)D(M)A hydrogels have significant thermoresponsiveness demonstrated mainly at elevated temperatures which makes this class of materials unsuitable for bio-applications. Copolymerisation with less hydrophilic 2-hydroxyethyl methacrylate (HEMA) was performed in an effort to shift volume phase transition (VPT) closer to physiological temperatures and to widen their application as thermoresponsive materials. Various monomer-solvent mixtures, consisting of different mole ratios of OEGDMA and HEMA monomers (100/0, 50/50, 27.5/72.5, and 12.5/87.5) and water/ethanol as solvent, were exposed to gamma radiation up to 6, 12, 25, and 50 kGy. Furthermore, in an attempt to obtain multi- (thermo- and pH-) responsive hydrogels for biomedical applications new P(OEGDMA/HEMA/IA) terpolymers containing a small share (2.5, and 5 wt%) of itaconic acid (IA) were synthesised. The successful fabrication of the hydrogels was confirmed by gel measurements and FTIR spectroscopy. Swelling measurements indicated that obtained networks possessed tuneable thermal behaviour and swelling properties which could be significantly altered by hydrogel composition. The porous architecture was investigated using SEM, confirming swelling results. Cytotoxicity revealed relatively high cell viability for all hydrogels, indicating satisfactory in vitro biocompatibility. Therefore, new OEGDMA based hydrogels showed potential for biomedical applications.

AB  - The aim of this study was to develop antimicrobial nanocomposite textile material comprising of Cu-based nanostructures synthesized on oxidized cotton fabric using Arctostaphylos uva-ursi (L.) Spreng., Ericaceae (bearberry leaves) as a green reducing agent for adsorbed Cu2+-ions. In order to provide sufficient number of carboxyl groups for complexation with Cu2+-ions a two-step oxidation process with NaIO4 and NaClO2 was carried out. The influence of NaIO4 concentration on content of carboxyl groups and Cu-based nanoparticles was studied by FTIR and AAS. HPLC analysis identified the gallic acid known as a reducing agent in bearberry leaves extract. FESEM and XRD analyses revealed that using bearberry leaves extract and gallic acid solution as reducing agents led to a formation of spherical Cu2O/CuO nanoparticles and CuO nanosheets, respectively. These nanoparticles and nanosheets provided excellent antibacterial activity against Gram-negative bacteria Escherichia coli and Gram-positive bacteria Staphylococcus aureus. Cytotoxicity on human keratinocyte cells was shown to depend on their copper content.

Judd–Ofelt Parametrization from the Emission Spectrum of Pr3+ Doped Materials: Theory, Application Software, and Demonstration on Pr3+ Doped YF3 and LaF3

AB  - Judd–Ofelt (JO) theory explains the optical properties of trivalent lanthanides using only three intensity parameters. The JO parametrization is a complicated procedure of absorption spectra analysis, especially cumbersome for powders and non-transparent materials. For the Pr3+ activated materials, the procedure is additionally complicated due to strong interaction of low-lying Pr3+ 4f5d energy levels with the 4f levels. Here, the straightforward JO parametrization method that uses the emission spectrum and the excited state lifetime of the Pr3+ 3P0 level which does not require any fitting procedure are shown. In addition, the theory and software for calculations of JO parameters from Pr3+ emission are explained. The method requirements are low-temperature photoluminescence measurements of Pr3+ introduced in low phonon energy hosts with a relatively high lying 4f5d energy level. The method is demonstrated on emissions of YF3:Pr3+ and LaF3:Pr3+ powders.

Cyclic voltammetry, square wave voltammetry, and open circuit potentiometry were applied to study the electrochemical reduction of Nd(III) and Pr(III) ions on Mo and W cathodes. It was established that a critical condition for Nd and Pr co-deposition in oxyfluoride electrolytes was a constant praseodymium deposition overpotential of ≈−0.100 V, which was shown to result in co-deposition current densities approaching 6 mAcm−2 . Analysis of the results obtained by applied electrochemical techniques showed that praseodymium deposition proceeds as a one-step process involving exchange of three electrons (Pr(III)→Pr(0)) and that neodymium deposition is a two-step process: the first involves one electron exchange (Nd(III)→Nd(II)), and the second involves an exchange of two electrons (Nd(II)→Nd(0)). X-ray diffraction analyses confirmed the formation of metallic Nd and Pr on the working substrate. Keeping the anodic potential to the glassy carbon working anode low results in very low levels of carbon oxides, fluorine and fluorocarbon gas emissions, which should qualify the studied system as an environmentally friendly option for rare earth metal deposition. The newly reported data for Nd and Pr metals co-deposition provide valuable information for the recycling of neodymium-iron-boron magnets.

Electrodeposition of Aluminium-Vanadium Alloys from Chloroaluminate Based Molten Salt Containing Vanadium Ions

AB  - The Al-V alloys were synthetized by potentiostatic electrodeposition onto a glassy carbon electrode from equimolar AlCl3 + NaCl bath containing vanadium ions at 200 °C. The alloy deposits were characterized by X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy, and energy dispersive spectroscopy. The deposits were identified as Al3V and AlV3 alloys. It was found that intermetallic alloys were synthetized during aluminium underpotential deposition onto vanadium metal that was previously deposited on the glassy carbon electrode by diffusion-controlled overpotential deposition. Alloys were the result of solid-state interdiffusion between the initially deposited vanadium and the subsequently deposited aluminium. As a source to secure a constant concentration of vanadium in the electrolyte during deposition, vanadium anodic dissolution, and VCl3 melt addition were studied. The effect of vanadium ion concentration in the electrolyte on the composition and the surface morphology of the obtained deposits was investigated. The results indicate that controlled vanadium and aluminium codeposition could be a further step to the successful development of an advanced technology for Al3V and AlV3 alloy synthesis.

AB  - Soy isoflavone genistein (Gen) exerts beneficial effects against prostate cancer cells in vitro and in vivo. However, its use as a chemoprevention/therapeutic agent is largely limited due to its low bioavailability. In this study we synthesized two variants of a new delivery system, genistein–gold nanoparticles conjugates Gen@AuNPs1 and Gen@AuNPs2, by an environmentally friendly method, using a dual role of Gen to reduce Au3+ and stabilize the formed AuNPs, with no additional component. The formation of Gen@AuNPs was confirmed via UV–Vis spectroscopy, FTIR, and Raman spectra measurements. The spherical shape and uniform size of Gen@AuNPs1 and Gen@AuNPs2 (10 ± 2 and 23 ± 3 nm, respectively), were determined by transmission electron microscopy. The nano-conjugates also varied in hydrodynamic diameter (65.0 ± 1.7 and 153.0 ± 2.2 nm) but had similar negative zeta potential (−35.0 ± 2.5 and −37.0 ± 1.6 mV), as measured by dynamic light scattering. The Gen loading was estimated to be 46 and 48%, for Gen@AuNPs1 and Gen@AuNPs2, respectively. The antiproliferative activities of GenAuNPs were confirmed by MTT test in vitro on three malignant prostate carcinoma cell lines (PC3, DU 145, and LNCaP), while selectivity toward malignant phenotype was confirmed using non-cancerous MRC-5 cells. Flow cytometric analysis showed that the inhibition on cell proliferation of more potent Gen@AuNPs1 nano-conjugate is comparable with the effects of free Gen. In conclusion, the obtained results, including physicochemical characterization of newly synthesized AuNPs loaded with Gen, cytotoxicity, and IC50 assessments, indicate their stability and bioactivity as an antioxidant and anti-prostate cancer agent, with low toxicity against human primary cells. © 2021 Elsevier B.V.

Effect of ibuprofen entrapment procedure on physicochemical and controlled drug release performances of chitosan/xanthan gum polyelectrolyte complexes

AB  - The effect of the entrapment procedure of a poorly water soluble drug (ibuprofen) on physicochemical and drug release performances of chitosan/xanthan polyelectrolyte complexes (PECs) was investigated to achieve controlled drug release as the ultimate goal. The formation of PECs for two drug entrapment procedures (before or after the mixing of polymers) at pH 4.6 and 5.6 and three chitosan-to-xanthan mass ratios (1:1, 1:2 and 1:3) was observed by continuous decrease in conductivity during the PECs formation and increased apparent viscosity and hysteresis values. The most extensive crosslinking was observed with ibuprofen added before the PECs formation at pH 4.6 and chitosan-to-xanthan mass ratio 1:1. The PECs prepared at polymers' mass ratios 1:2 and 1:3 had higher yield and drug entrapment efficiency. DSC and FT-IR analysis confirmed ibuprofen entrapment in PECs and the partial disruption of its crystallinity. All ibuprofen release profiles were similar, with 60–70% of drug released after 12 h, mainly by diffusion, but erosion and polymer chain relaxation were also included. Potentially optimal can be considered the PEC prepared at pH 4.6, ibuprofen entrapped before the mixing of polymers at chitosan-to-xanthan mass ratio 1:2, which provided controlled drug release by zero-order kinetics, high yield, and drug entrapment efficiency.

All ibuprofen release profiles were similar, with 60–70% of drug released after 12 h, mainly by diffusion, but erosion and polymer chain relaxation were also included. Potentially optimal can be considered the PEC prepared at pH 4.6, ibuprofen entrapped before the mixing of polymers at chitosan-to-xanthan mass ratio 1:2, which provided controlled drug release by zero-order kinetics, high yield, and drug entrapment efficiency.",

Modification of PET and PA fabrics with alginate and copper oxides nanoparticles

AB  - The aim of this study was to fabricate novel antimicrobial nanocomposite materials by in-situ syntheses of Cu-based nanoparticles on PET and PA fabrics. The synthesis comprised three steps: (i) modification of PET and PA fabrics with biopolymer alginate in order to improve uptake of Cu2+-ions, (ii) sorption of Cu2+-ions from the solution of precursor salt and (iii) reduction of adsorbed Cu2+-ions in an alkaline solution of sodium borohydride. The influence of concentration of alginate and copper(II) sulphate solutions on Cu2+-ions uptake and total copper content after reduction was evaluated. The presence of Cu-based nanoparticles was proved by FESEM and XRD analysis. XRD analysis revealed the presence of CuO and Cu2O on the PET and PA fibers, respectively. Larger amounts of mostly agglomerated nanoparticles were detected on PET fiber surface than on the PA fiber surface. This observation is in line with results of AAS measurements confirming that the total content of Cu on the PET fabric was nearly 30% higher compared to PA fabric. Nanocomposite containing PET fibers provided excellent antimicrobial activity against Gram-negative bacteria E. coli, Gram-positive bacteria S. aureus and yeast C. albicans. On the other hand, nanocomposite comprising PA fibers ensured maximum antibacterial and fungistatic activities.

XPS study of iodine and tin doped Sb2S3 nanostructures affected by non-uniform charging

AB  - X-ray diffraction (XRD) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) measurements are used for investigating incorporation of iodine and tin into the stibnite (Sb2S3) lattice, as well as for determining surface composition and structure, respectively. The XRD analysis revealed the visible presence of a single phase, that of pure orthorhombic Sb2S3 structure. XPS survey spectra confirmed the presence of expected elements (Sb, S, Sn and I) at the surface of corresponding samples. Since the bonding identification was hindered by non-uniform charging of samples during acquiring the photoelectron spectra, a novel approach for the analysis of high resolution spectra was proposed and successfully implemented. XPS results showed that surface composition of the non-doped sample coincides with that of the bulk, while doping strongly affects surface of the samples. Sn-doped sample appears to be prone to surface oxidation. The presence of Sb2S3, Sb2O3, SnS2 and Sn(0) phases at the surface was revealed. Strong segregation of antimony was observed in the I-doped Sb2S3 sample. Iodine is also present at the surface in the form of the SbI3 phase, while the detected sulphur signal most probably corresponds to S atoms from unaltered deeper layers.

AB  - This work presents the investigation of electrochemical properties of three alumina samples with different structure and crystal water content. The samples were characterized by XRD and FTIR-ATR analysis, confirming the presence of trihydrate, monohydrate and anhydrous alumina. The samples were used as modifiers of carbon paste electrodes. Their electrochemical behavior toward ferricyanide/ferrocyanide redox probe was evaluated by electrochemical impedance spectroscopy and cyclic voltammetry. The electrochemical behavior toward ruthenium hexamine redox probe was investigated by cyclic voltammetry. The response toward quinone/hydroquinone redox probe was evaluated in buffered and unbuffered solution by cyclic voltammetry. It was found that the surface chemistry of investigated samples influenced their electrochemical properties.

Microsized fayalite Fe2SiO4 as anode material: the structure, electrochemical properties and working mechanism

AB  - Fayalite Fe2SiO4 is synthesized by the solid-state reaction without ball milling. The obtained powder is further structurally and electrochemically examined. Field emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM) showed that microsized powder is obtained. X-ray powder diffraction (XRD) pattern is used for both phase identification and crystal structure Rietveld refinement. The structure is refined in the orthorhombic Pbnm space group. Mössbauer spectroscopy revealed traces of Fe3+ impurity. The bond valence mapping method is applied for the first time on Fe2SiO4 framework. It shows isolated, non-connected isosurfaces of constant E(Li), which further supports the assumptions of the conversion reactions. Electrochemical performances are investigated through galvanostatic cycling, cyclic voltammetry, and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS). Ex-situ XRD and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) analyses are combined to monitor phase change after galvanostatic cycling and to reveal the working mechanism during electrochemical lithiation.

AB  - Porous cobalt-doped alumina catalysts were synthetized using the sol-gel method. The synthesized materials were calcined at 500 °C, 1000 °C and 1100 °C and denoted as CoA-500, CoA-1000 and CoA-1100, respectively. Catalysts were characterized using XRPD, H2-TPR and low temperature N2 physisorption techniques. Applied techniques showed that the annealing temperature affects the structural and textural properties of the catalysts. The synthesized catalysts were investigated in the degradation of tartrazine in the presence of Oxone®. The influence of the mass of catalyst, reaction time, reaction temperature and initial pH were investigated. The temperature increase was beneficial for the dye degradation rate. CoA-500 was proved to be the most efficient among the investigated catalysts. The reaction followed the pseudo-first order kinetics for all investigated temperatures for all three catalysts. All cobalt-doped alumina catalysts were found to be efficient in the Oxone® induced catalytic degradation of tartrazine with CoA-500 showing the best performance.

AB  - Silica particles were obtained from rice husk to which layered double hydroxide particles were deposited (weight ratio 1 : 1). Fe2+-Al3+ layered double hydroxides (FeAl-LDH) were synthesized by co-precipitation with ratios Fe : Al of 3 : 1 in the presence of SiO2 particles from the rice husk. Characterization of the synthesized FeAl-LDH@SiO2 particles was performed by X-ray diffraction, Fourier transforms infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) and scanning electron microscopy with EDS. Prepared FeAl-LDH@SiO2 particles were used as reinforcing agents in 1, 3 and 5 wt% quantity in poly (methyl) methacrylate matrix. The aim of this study was to examine whether FeAl-LDH@SiO2 particles affect the mechanical properties of polymer composite materials. The morphology of the composites was examined using a field emission scanning electron microscope. Microindentation, tensile and impact testing determined the mechanical properties of the obtained composites.

Characterization of the synthesized FeAl-LDH@SiO2 particles was performed by X-ray diffraction, Fourier transforms infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) and scanning electron microscopy with EDS. Prepared FeAl-LDH@SiO2 particles were used as reinforcing agents in 1, 3 and 5 wt% quantity in poly (methyl) methacrylate matrix. The aim of this study was to examine whether FeAl-LDH@SiO2 particles affect the mechanical properties of polymer composite materials. The morphology of the composites was examined using a field emission scanning electron microscope. Microindentation, tensile and impact testing determined the mechanical properties of the obtained composites.",

Herein, we aimed to compare thermometric performances of these three different ratiometric readouts on account of their relative sensitivities, resolutions, and repeatability of measurements. The structure of the materials was confirmed by X-ray diffraction analysis and particle morphology was evaluated from FE-SEM measurements. Upconversion emission spectra were measured over the 293–473 K range upon excitation by 980 nm radiation. The obtained relative sensitivities on temperature for 523/542, 485/542, and 793/840 emission intensity ratios were 1.06 ± 0.02, 2.03 ± 0.23, and 0.98 ± 0.10%K−1 with temperature resolutions of 0.3, 0.7, and 1.8 K, respectively. The study showed that the higher relative temperature sensitivity does not necessarily lead to the more precise temperature measurement and better resolution, since it may be compromised by a larger uncertainty in measurement of low-intensity emission bands.

AB  - Neodymium was electrochemically deposited from NdF3–LiF–Nd2O3 molten salt electrolyte onto the Mo electrode at temperatures close to 1273 K. Cyclic voltammetry and chronoamperometry measurements were the applied electrochemical methods. Metallic neodymium is obtained by potentiostatic deposition. The optical microscopy and XRD were used to analyze the electrolyte, the working electrode surface, and the deposit on the electrode. It was established that Nd(III) ions were reduced to Nd metals in two steps: Nd(III) + e− → Nd(II) at potential ≈−0.55 V vs. W and Nd(II) + 2e− → Nd(0) at ≈−0.83 V vs. W. Both of these processes are reversible and under mass transfer control. Upon deposition under the regime of relatively small deposition overpotential of −0.10 V to −0.20 V, and after the electrolyte was cooled off, Nd metal was observed at the surface of the Mo electrode. CO and CF4 were gases registered as being evolved at the anode. CO and CF4 evolution were observed in quantities below 600 ppm and 10 ppm, respectively

AB  - In the presented paper, changes of high-density polyethylene's (HDPE) surface properties along with the changes of chemical composition, as a consequence of Fe ion implantation with different fluences, were investigated. Applied implantation fluences were as follows: 5 × 1016, 1 × 1017, 2 × 1017 and 5 × 1017 ions cm−2, while the implantation energy was 95 keV. The samples were analyzed by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), Atomic Force Microscopy (AFM), Four point contact probe, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) and contact angle measurements. Significant changes in the chemical composition were found by XPS and FTIR, which were followed by changes in surface morphology, increase of roughness, and decrease of sheet resistance that has a percolation threshold that starts for the fluence of 1 × 1017 ions cm−2. Surface free energy increases as a consequence of implantation, up to the fluence of 1 × 1017 ions cm−2, and then decreases for the 2 higher fluences. © 2019 Elsevier B.V.

AB  - A metastable ε-polymorph of iron(III) oxide (ε-Fe2O3) is a very attractive material from the technological, engineering, and scientific points of view. In comparison with other iron oxides, it is characterized by unusual magnetic properties and a giant coercivity of ~20 kOe, which is the largest value among metal oxides. The routine method of ε-Fe2O3 formation is based on the thermal annealing of maghemite (γ-Fe2O3) nanoparticles confined in a silica matrix where the ε-Fe2O3 appears as an intermediate phase between the maghemite and an α-polymorph (α-Fe2O3) hematite (γ→ε→α pathway). In this study, it is demonstrated that the ε→α transformation can be reversed when hematite nanoparticles with an anisotropic hollow morphology are annealed above 600 °C. The observed reversal of the phase stability is explained in terms of an increased nanoparticle surface area and surface energy related to the hollow structure. This study demonstrates the applicability of surface-induced phase transformation to stabilize and control ε-Fe2O3 nanostructures with anisotropic shape and high coercivity ~1600 kA/m that is one of the key properties of functional magnetic materials for information processing and storage. The understanding of ε-Fe2O3 formation mechanism can provide a new viewpoint and guidance for designing metastable polymorphs and applicative properties. © 2020 Acta Materialia Inc.
