AB - Carbon quantum dots (CQDs) are well known as a promising therapeutic agent due to their excellent pro-oxidant, antioxidant, antibacterial and anticancer properties under visible light irradiation. This material is easy to produce by several bottom-up or top-down methods. In this study, we used citric acid as starting precursor to synthesize aqueous carbon quantum dots dispersion by pyrolysis at 210 ◦C. Atomic force microscopy and XPS analyses revealed that CQDs synthesized are quasi-spherical with typical diameter of 9 nm and lots of C–O and C––O functional groups distributed over the basal plane and edges of the dots. Here, we investigated the antiviral properties of CQDs against cytomegalovirus (CMV). The pre-treatment with CQDs upregulates interferonstimulated genes (ISG), resulting in better virus control. Cellular defence against cytomegalovirus of CQDs pre-treated cells is increased in a dose-dependent manner. Our results reveal high biocompatibility and potent in vitro antiviral properties of CQDs.

AB - In order to better predict the high aerosol concentrations associated with air pollution and climate change, a machine learning model was developed using transfer learning and the segmentation process of global satellite images. The main concept of transfer learning lies on convolutional neural networks and works by initializing the already trained model weights to better adapt the weights when the network is trained on a different dataset. The transfer learning technique was tested with the ResNet3D-101 model pre-trained from a 2D ImageNet dataset. This model has performed well for contrail detection to assess climate impact. Aerosol distributions can be monitored via satellite remote sensing. Satellites can monitor some aerosol optical properties like aerosol optical thickness. Aerosol optical thickness snapshots were the input dataset for the model and were obtained from NASA’s Terra-Modis satellite; the output images were segmented by comparing the pixel values with a threshold value of 0.8 for aerosol optical thickness. Hyperparameter optimization finds a tuple of hyperparameters that yields an optimal model that minimizes a predefined loss function on given independent data. The model structure was adjusted in order to improve the performance of the model by applying methods and hyperparameter optimization techniques such as grid search, batch size, threshold, and input length. According to the criteria defined by the authors, the distance domain criterion and time domain criterion, the developed model is capable of generating adequate data and finding patterns in the time domain. As observed from the comparison of relative coefficients for the criteria metrics proposed by the authors, ddc and dtc, the deep learning model based on ConvLSTM layers developed in our previous studies has better performance than the model developed in this study with transfer learning.

AB - Graphene quantum dots (GQDs) are class of nanoparticles exhibiting unique and tunable electronic, optical, chemical and structural properties owing to their small size and quantum confinement and edge effects. GQDs most prominent characteristics are high photoluminescence, photostability, excellent photobleaching resistance, low citotoxicity, good biocompatibility, exceptional electrochemical activity and physicochemical stability, making them suitable for a wide range of applications, from biosensing and fluorescence bioimaging usage, photodynamic therapy, to optoelectronic, susteanable agricultural and environmental applications. Using density functional theory (DFT) we demonstrate that the optical properties of the GQDs can be sensitively tuned by its size, shape, edge configuration, attached chemical functionalities.

AB - Emission factors (EFs) of gaseous pollutants, particulate matter, certain harmful trace elements, and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) from three thermal power plants (TPPs) and semi-industrial fluidized bed boiler (FBB) were compared. EFs of particulate matter, trace elements (except Cd and Pb), benzo[a]pyrene, and benzo[b]fluoranthene exceed the upper limits specified in the EMEP inventory guidebook for all combustion facilities. The comparison of trace elements and PAHs content in fly ashes (FAs) from lignite and coal waste combustion in TPPs and FBB, respectively, as well as the potential environmental impact of FAs disposal, was performed by employing a set of ecological indicators such as crustal enrichment factor, risk assessment code, risk indices for trace elements, and benzo[a]pyrene equivalent concentration for PAHs. Sequential analysis shows that the trace elements portion is the lowest for water-soluble and exchangeable fractions. The highest enrichment levels in FAs are noticed for As and Hg. Based on toxic trace elements content, FAs from TPPs represent a very high ecological risk, whereas fly ash from FBB poses a moderate ecological risk but has the highest benzo[a]pyrene equivalent concentration, indicating its increased carcinogenic potential. Lead isotope ratios for Serbian coals and FAs can contribute to a lead pollution global database.

AB - Background: Experimental autoimmune encephalomyelitis (EAE) is one of the most studied model of neuroinflammation, used to test immunomodulatory and antiinflammatory drugs. Graphene quantum dots (GQD) are oval graphite twodimensional sheets with a diameter <100 nm, one carbon atom thickness, with potential applications in biomedicine. Objective: To investigate the potential protective effect of GQD in EAE model. Methods: Female DA rats were immunized with spinal cord homogenate and Freund’s complete adjuvant. GQD treatment (10 mg/kg, ip) was administrated during the inductive, effector and both phases of a disease. MAP kinase (MAPK) and Akt activity in popliteal lymph nodes (PLN) and CNS was determined by western blot. Quantitative PCR and flow cytometry were used to examine the expression of proinflammatory cytokines and specific transcription factors while infiltration of GQD in cells/tissues was detected by transmission electron microscopy. GQD antiinflamatory/direct cytoprotective effect was analyzed on oligodendrocyte and neuron cell cultures by MTT assay. Data were analized by Mann Whitney test (p<0.05 was considered as statistical significant difference). Results: GQD administration, in all phases of EAE, significantly reduced clinical score of a disease. Clinical improvement correlates with increase in activity of ERK, p38 and Akt that is followed by reduction of Th1 cell response in PLN and infiltrated spinal coard T cells. Due to its capacity to infiltrate cells and tissues, GQD exhibits direct cytoprotective effect on CNS. Additionaly, GQD reduced the expression of proinflammatory cytokines in ConA stimulated lymphocytes. Conclusion: GQD alleviate EAE, through direct cytoprotective effect on CNS and inhibition of Th1 cell response.

AB - Homogeneity of the flue gas-flow through the chamber of an electrostatic precipitator is one of the basic influencing parameter on dedusting efficiency. This paper presents results of a multiobjective optimization study of the flue gas controlling devices of electrostatic precipitator of 324 MWe lignite fired Unit A4 of TPP "Nikola Tesla" in Serbia. The aim was to achieve better flow homogeneity in the cross-section of the precipitator compared to the original design. Additional constraints were to maintain the minimum as possible overall weight of the proposed design as well as pressure drop through the precipitator. Numerical simulations based on CFD were used to investigate dependence of the velocity distribution in the ducts and precipitator’s chamber with respect to the geometrical parameters of tested concepts of turning blades. A series of 22 detailed full-scale numerical models of the precipitator with different concepts of turning vanes designs were developed. Assessment of the flow field uniformity for each tested design was performed based on the analysis of several homogeneity parameters calculated for selected vertical cross-sections of the precipitator. After the reconstruction according to optimized design, results of measurements confirmed significant improvements of the velocity distribution in the vertical cross-sections of the precipitator, increase of dedusting efficiency and reduction of PM emission.

After the reconstruction according to optimized design, results of measurements confirmed significant improvements of the velocity distribution in the vertical cross-sections of the precipitator, increase of dedusting efficiency and reduction of PM emission.",

AB - Heating value is an important indicator for assessment of the coal quality. Machine learning models are powerful computational tools that allow for the analysis of various heat and mass transfer phenomena in energy systems. In this paper, Random forest model for determining the lower heating values of coal from the thermal power plant “Kolubara A” is developed based on proximate and ultimate fuel analysis. A database of the proximate and ultimate fuel analysis values and lower heating value of coal was created by experimental measurements in the accredited test laboratory of the Department of Thermal Engineering and Energy (“VINČA” Institute of Nuclear Sciences). The developed Random forest models, applied to a relatively small database, showed acceptable predictions for the lower heating value based on both the proximate analysis (RMSE = 0.22 MJ/kg and MAPE = 2.26%) and the ultimate analysis (RMSE = 0.64 MJ/kg and MAPE = 6.12%), with better accuracy achieved by the model whose input data consisted of the values of technical fuel analysis.

AB - Antioxidants have a significant contribution in the cell protection against free radicals which may induce oxidative stress, and permanently damage the cells causing different disorders such as tumors, degenerative diseases, and accelerated aging. Nowadays, a multi-functionalized heterocyclic framework plays an important role in drug development, and it is of great importance in organic synthesis and medicinal chemistry. Encouraged by the bioactivity of the pyrido-dipyrimidine scaffold and vanillin core, herein, we made an effort to thoroughly investigate the antioxidant potential of the vanillin-based pyrido-dipyrimidines A–E to reveal novel promising free radical inhibitors. The structural analysis and the antioxidant action of the investigated molecules were performed in silico by DFT calculations. Studied compounds were screened for their antioxidant capacity using in vitro ABTS and DPPH assays. All the investigated compounds showed remarkable antioxidant activity, especially derivative A exhibiting inhibition of free radicals at the IC50 value (ABTS and DPPH assay 0.1 mg ml−1 and 0.081 mg ml−1, respectively). Compound A has higher TEAC values implying its stronger antioxidant activity compared to a trolox standard. The applied calculation method and in vitro tests confirmed that compound A has a strong potential against free radicals and may be a novel candidate for application in antioxidant therapy.

AB - The anthropogenic emission of GHG especially CO has to be limited and reduced due to 2 their impact on global warming and climate change. Combustion of fossil fuels in the energy sector has a dominant share in total GHG emissions. In order to reduce GHG emission, European Union established a scheme for GHG allowance trading within the community, and the implementation of the European Union emission trading scheme, which is a key to GHG reduction in a cost-effective way. An important part of emission trading scheme is prescribed methodology for monitoring, reporting, and verification of the emission of GHG including characterization of the local fuels combusted by the energy sector. This paper presents lignite characteristics from open-pit mine Borovica- Pljevlja, which has highest coal production in Montenegro (>1.2 Mt per year), including evaluation of its carbon emission factor based on the laboratory analysis of 72 coal samples. Testing of the samples included proximate and ultimate analysis, as well as, net calorific value determination. In accordance with the obtained results, linear correlations between net calorific value and combustible matter content, carbon content and combustible matter content, hydrogen content and combustible matter content, carbon content and net calorific value, were established. Finally, the non-linear analytical correlation between carbon emission factor and net calorific value for Pljevlja lignite was proposed, as a base for the precise calculation of CO emission evaluation.

AB - The electrostatic precipitator system of the lignite fired 350 MWe unit B1 of Thermal Power Plant Kostolac B has been modernized during 2014. The results of complex in site measurements, performed in the frame of performance control test at the beginning of the exploitation period of the upgraded electrostatic pre-cipitator proved that, under normal and guarantee working conditions of the boiler and precipitator, the emission of particulate matter do not exceed limiting value. After the period of precipitator further adjustments, five series of meas-urements in the frame of acceptance test were performed in accordance with rel-evant standards. This paper presents results of the investigation of particulate matter concentration, laboratory analysis of the lignite, fly and bottom ash sam-ples, working parameters of the unit and upgraded electrostatic precipitator as well as results of the calculations. The averaged mean particulate concentration at the exit of upgraded electrostatic precipitator of the unit B1 during Acceptance test was below guaranteed value. It is confirmed that adjustments of electrostatic precipitator electrical parameters have improved electrostatic precipitator effi-ciency, as well that electrostatic precipitatorcould work highly efficiently in en-ergy save mode with lower power consumption. © 2018 Society of Thermal Engineers of Serbia.

AB - New system for start-up and flame support based on coal gasification by low temperature air thermal plasma is planned to supplement current heavy oil system in Serbian thermal power plants in order to decrease air pollutions emission and operational costs. Locally introduced plasma thermal energy heats up and ignites entrained coal particles, thus starting chain process which releases heat energy from gasified coal particles inside burner channel. Important stages during particle combustion, such as particle devolatilisation and char combustion, are described with satisfying accuracy in existing commercial computer fluid dynamics codes that are extensively used as powerful tool for pulverized coal combustion and gasification modeling. However, during plasma coal gasification, high plasma temperature induces strong thermal stresses inside interacting coal particles. These stresses lead to thermal shock and extensive particle fragmentation during which coal particles with initial size of 50-100 mu m disintegrate into fragments of at most 5-10 mu m. This intensifies volatile release by a factor 3-4 and substantially accelerates the oxidation of combustible matter. Particle fragmentation, due to its small size and thus limited influence on combustion process is commonly neglected in modelling. The main focus of this work is to suggest novel approach to pulverized coal gasification under high temperature conditions and to implement it into commercial comprehensive code ANSYS FLUENT 14.0. Proposed model was validated against experimental data obtained in newly built pilot scale direct current plasma burner test facility. Newly developed model showed very good agreement with experimental results with relative error less than 10%, while the standard built-in gasification model had error up to 25%.

AB - A fuzzy approximation concept is applied in order to predict results of coupled computational structure mechanics and computational fluid dynamics while solving a problem of steady incompressible gas flow through thermally loaded rectangular thin-walled channel. Channel wall deforms into wave-type shapes depending on thermal load and fluid inlet velocity inducing the changes of fluid flow accordingly. A set of fluid-structure interaction numerical tests have been defined by varying the values of fluid inlet velocity, temperature of inner and outer surface of the channel wall, and numerical grid density. The unsteady Navier-Stokes equations are numerically solved using an element-based finite volume method and second order backward Euler discretization scheme. The structural model is solved by finite element method including geometric and material non-linearities. The implicit two-way iterative code coupling, partitioned solution approach, were used while solving these numerical tests. Results of numerical analysis indicate that gravity and pressure distribution inside the channel contributes to triggering the shape of deformation. In the inverse problem, the results of fluid-structure interaction numerical simulations formed a database of input variables for development fuzzy logic based models considering downstream pressure drop and maximum stresses as the objective functions. Developed fuzzy models predicted targeting results within a reasonable accuracy limit at lower computation cost compared to series of fluid-structure interaction numerical calculations. Smaller relative difference were obtained when calculating the values of pressure drop then maximal stresses indicating that transfer function influence on output values have to be additionally investigated.

AB - The behavior of the mast is non-linear due to its slenderness and compliant guy-support system, having a tendency to lose stability and even crush suddenly. Wind load is one of the main factors affecting the stability of the structure of the mast. Structural assessment of the different mast configurations has been investigated in the past. Furthermore, European standards EN 1993-3-1:2006 and EN 1993-1-6:2007 already provides some guidelines about the basis of structural analysis of masts and towers. This paper presents the results of numerical simulations of a guyed mast exposed to wind action using finite element method. Structural analyses were performed for three different constant wind loads, modal analysis provides the values of natural frequency and mode shapes, while the stability analysis was performed for the first three buckling load factor values. The motivation for this study is to investigate the contribution of finite element method to structural analysis of a lattice structure such as guyed mast as an alternative and/or improvement to the literature and codes.

AB - The requirements of the international document Directive 2001/80/EC relating to limitation of the particulate matter emissions from large thermal power plants have been incorporated into relevant regulations of domestic legislation. In accordance with the commitments, since 2005 it was started with reconstruction and modernization of electrostatic precipitator system of all thermal units within the Electric Power Industry of Serbia. The reconstruction and modernization of electrostatic precipitator system of the unit B2 of thermal power plant 'Nikola Tesla B' was done during 2011, while the reconstruction of the electrostatic precipitator system of the unit B1 was conducted in 2012 year. One of the main objectives of performed reconstructions and modernizations, financed by donations of the European Union, was to decrease the emission of particulate matter in the flue gas from these units down to level below 50 mg/Nm3, in normal conditions and under guaranteed operating conditions of the boiler and electrostatic precipitator system. This paper presents results of the measurements of particulate matter concentration performed in accordance with standards ISO 9096 and EN 13284-1, immediately after the reconstruction and shortly before the end of the period of about 1 year after the reconstruction, as a part of control and guarantee investigations of the reconstructed electrostatic precipitators of Thermal Power Plant Nikola Tesla B units. In addition, this paper presents re sults of labosatory analysis of the coal samples taken during test, working parameters of the unit and upgraded electrostatic precipitator system during the tests as well as results of the calculations. The results of the measurements confirm that particulate matter concentration in the flue gas from reconstructed electrostatic precipitators fall down below guaranteed values, thus confirming the effectiveness of the reconstructive operations.

AB - A descriptive model for isolated char particle combustion under conventional and oxy-fuel conditions was developed. Suggested model is based on the percolation theory and Monte Carlo simulation technique. Char particle was modeled as a square lattice consisting of a large number of small sites. Sites correspond either to fixed carbon, ash, or pore, and they were distributed randomly inside char lattice using percolation concept, at the start of simulation. Random walk model was used to represent gaseous species diffusion through particle pores. Char combustion was modeled using power law Arrhenius model which assumes that reaction rate depends of particle temperature and oxygen partial pressure on particle surface. The main aim of the proposed model was to take into account influence of heterogeneous char particle structure to randomness of the char combustion process. The suggested models behavior was validated by qualitative comparison with experimental data obtained in single particle reactor. It was found that simulated combustion time, char burnout and particle temperature values are in good agreement with experimentally determined data. Special emphasis was given to the CO2 gasification reaction influence on char conversion and particle temperature values. Further development of the proposed model with appropriate simplifications would enable its inclusion in comprehensive CFD codes. (C) 2015 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

AB - Coal as the fossil fuel contains naturally occurring radionuclides and belongs toNORM (Naturally Occurring Radioactive Materials). On the other hand, slag and fly-ash belong to TENORM (Technically Enhanced Naturally Occurring Radioactive Material), and if they are released into the environment an increase and/or redistribution of natural radionuclide content can occur. For the purposes of this study, six sets of samples (18 in total) of “Kolubara” coal, slag and fly-ash were collected during the periodical emission tests in May 2012th at steam boilers K3 and K4 of TPP “Kolubara”, Serbia. Coal, slag and fly-ash samples were prepared for analysis (milled, dried, sieved and weighed) by appropriate standard methods. Prepared samples were placedin 125 mL PVC cylindrical boxes, weighted and sealed with natural wax. Sealed samples were measured with a semiconductor HPGe spectrometer (37 % relative efficiency) after the radioactive equilibrium was reached. The obtained values of specific activity for coal (Ac), slag (As) and fly-ash (Af) do not differ significantly compared to the values available in the literature. Analysis of determined mutual ratiosAs/Ac andAf/Ac are consistent, taking into account uncertainties ofactivity concentrations, with values of approximately 2 and 4, forK3, and1.5 and 4, forK4. Discrepancies were notedonly for40K (bothsteam boilers) ofAs/Ac.Results indicate that further investigation with more samples should be undertaken, and also correlation between radiological and proximate analysis should be determined.

AB - Ugalj predstavlja glavni izvor energije u Srbiji. Jedan od problema koji prati proizvodnju
energije iz uglja je problem tzv. “energetskog otpada”, kao što su leteći pepeo i šljaka, koji
predstavljaju nesagorivi i nesagoreli ostatak pri sagorevanju uglja. Leteći pepeo i šljaka
predstavljaju TENORM (Technically Enhanced Naturally Occurring Radioactive Material), a u
literaturi. Svi dobijeni rezultati su dodatno statistički obrađeni u cilju određivanje mogućih
korelacija.
AB - Coal is the main energy source in Serbia. One of the problems associated with the
production of energy from coal is the so-called “energy waste”, such as fly-ash and slag (bottomash), which are incombustible and unburt residue from combustion of coal. Fly-ash and slag are
TENORM (Technically Enhanced Naturally Occurring Radioactive Material), and if they are
released into the environment an increase and/or redistribution of natural radionuclide content can
occur. To determine the potential impact of “energy waste” on the environment, samples of coal,
fly-ash, and slag from thermal power plant “Nikola Tesla” and “Kolubara” were analyzed.
The measured concentrations of natural radionuclides (uranium and thorium series and 40K) in
samples of coal as well as in slag and fly-ash produced by combustion of coal are presented in this
paper. Sealed samples were measured with a semiconductor HPGe spectrometer (37% relative
efficiency) after the radioactive equilibrium was reached. Spectra were recorded and analyzed using
software package GENIE 2K, with additional analysis performed by ANGES software.
The obtained values of specific activity do not differ significantly compared to the values available
in the literature. All the results were further statistically analyzed in order to determine the possible
correlation.

GENIE 2K, uz dodatnu analizu korišćenjem programa ANGES.
Dobijene vrednosti specifičnih aktivnosti ne odstupaju značajno u odnosu na vrednosti dostupne u
literaturi. Svi dobijeni rezultati su dodatno statistički obrađeni u cilju određivanje mogućih
korelacija., Coal is the main energy source in Serbia.
All the results were further statistically analyzed in order to determine the possible
correlation.",

AB - As a non-Annex I Party to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change and Kyoto Protocol signatory, the Republic of Serbia has committed to develop GHG (Greenhouse Gases) emission inventory and prepare comprehensive program of mitigation measures at national level. The paper presents results of 2000-2008 GHG emission inventory assembled for PDH (Public District Heating) sub-sector in accordance with revised IPCC (Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change) Tier 1 methodology. Evaluation of proposed mitigation measures was performed based on 2012 and 2015 GHG emission projections, obtained for basic and four alternative scenarios, all characterized by the same energy demand but with different fuel mix used. The first alternative scenario addresses GHG emissions in case that solid fuel is substituted by natural gas. The second alternative scenario represents a sub-scenario of the first alternative scenario, with additional substitution of liquid fuel with locally available biomass. Third alternative scenario addresses emissions resulting from complete fuel switch from natural gas to liquid fuel oil, while the final alternative scenario considers the case when natural gas is the only energy resource used. GHG emission trends in the period until 2015, examined in case of previously mentioned basic and four alternative scenarios, point out to the positive impact of fuel switch on GHG emission reduction and pathways for future implementation of proposed mitigation measures. Results obtained clearly quantified assumption that fuel substitution by locally available biomass could solve environmental problems, overcome problems associated with high prices of imported fuels, improve energy supply security and increase local employment. AB - The revised Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change guidelines for national greenhouse gas inventories recommends that more comprehensive and thus more reliable characteristics of the local fossil fuels should be used for the national greenhouse gas inventory calculations. This paper deal with the carbon emission characteristics of low-calorific lignite recovered from the Kolubara open-pit mine. The samples of coal were carefully selected in order to cover the net calorific value, ash and water content of the broad spectrum of the quality of the raw lignite supplied to the Serbian thermal power plants. Correlation analysis of the laboratory analysis data gave a linear dependency of the net calorific value on the combustible content in the coal samples. Also, linear correlation between the carbon content and the net calorific value was found. The regression analysis of experimentally determined coal characteristics implies that the carbon emission factor is dependent on the net calorific value. For the subset of raw lignite samples with the net calorific value Q(d)(r) = 6-10 MJ/kg, that is most representative for current and near future use for power generation in Serbian thermal power plants, the linear dependency CEFr (tC/TJ) = 34.407 - 0.5891.Q(d)(r) MJ/kg was proposed. Regarding the net calorific ranges of samples examined, the raw Kolubara lignite carbon emission factor is considerably higher than those recommended by Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change Tier 1 method of 27.6 tC/TJ.
