Packaging was invented thanks to the man's need to make delivery and sale of products easier and to improve handling, transport and storage of products as well as the way they are displayed in shops. Packaging is most often made of paper, metal, wood, glass and plastic. Determining the presence and measuring the content of four heavy metals, cadmium, chromium, lead and mercury in the packaging and components of packaging and control of their disposal in the environment has great environmental effects. It influences the quality of packaging and packaged goods, and healti of the consumers. Considering the Republic of Serbia does most of its trade exchange with EU countries, it is necessary to fulfill the required conditions and to harmonize with EU regulations in the area of packaging and packaged waste. Requirements which are related to production and composition of packaging are defined by the EU Directive 94/62/EC. According to that Directive, after June 30 2001, the total content of the above mentioned heavy metals in the packaging must not exceed 100 ppm.en
