The arsenic sorption capacity of different Serbian soils
Abstract
Arsenic (As) added to the soil by various industrial activities, landfills, and agricultural pesticide use poses a significant threat to the environment and biota. The As-binding capacity of soil organic and inorganic constituents governs this element's fate, mobility, and bioavailability. To improve the understanding of As sorption by soils in Serbia, eight selected samples were artificially contaminated with increasing As concentrations. Significant variations in maximum sorption capacities demonstrated their strong dependence on soil properties. The association between maximum As sorption capacities and Mn, Fe, and Al concentrations in the soil samples was revealed.
