AB - Strategic energy settings, along with the current geopolitical situation and growing energy uncertainty, greatly emphasize the necessity of revitalizing the district heating system (DHS) in Serbia. The upcoming winter will also highlight the need for this due to increasingly obvious climate change and the region's worrisome environmental state in recent years regarding air pollution. This paper aims to make some recommendations on the DHS revitalization to the national government and local authorities. The paper will present the current state of the district heating system in Serbia, its key participants and stakeholders, then key challenges of DHS retrofitting and development and recommended actions aiming at DHS development and refurbishment. These recommendations stemmed from the Keep Warm project - "Improving the performance of district heating systems in Central and Eastern Europe" in which the project leader in Serbia was the Institute VINČA, Laboratory for Thermal Engineering and Energy.
