AB - Clinical interpretation of an electrocardiogram (ECG) can be detrimentally affected by noise. Removal of the electromyographic (EMG) noise is particularly challenging due to its spectral overlap with the QRS complex. The existing EMG-denoising algorithms often distort signal morphology, thus obscuring diagnostically relevant information. Here, a new iterative regeneration method (IRM) for efficient EMG-noise suppression is proposed. The main hypothesis is that the temporary removal of the dominant ECG components enables extraction of the noise with the minimum alteration to the signal. The method is validated on SimEMG database of simultaneously recorded reference and noisy signals, MIT-BIH arrhythmia database and synthesized ECG signals, both with the noise from MIT Noise Stress Test Database. IRM denoising and morphology-preserving performance is superior to the wavelet- and FIR-based benchmark methods. : IRM is reliable, computationally non-intensive, fast and applicable to any number of ECG channels recorded by mobile or standard ECG devices.

AB - Conventional designs of multiport splitters rely on concatenation of directional couplers or multimode interference [1, 2]. However, the splitters show a considerable insertion loss and fast bandwidth drop with the number of ports. Inverse nanodesigns enable broadbandwidth semiconductor splitters, however, at high fabrication and design costs [3, 4]. In this work we present efficient and low-cost inverse design and experimental realization of multiport splitters with near-zero insertion loss, broad bandwidth and small footprint. Design is based on single-mode linearly coupled waveguide arrays which support periodic light propagation [5]. It allows for realisation of arbitrary splitting ratios by simple adjustment of waveguide separations. To demonstrate the technique, we designed equal 1×N power splitters and fabricated them in a borosilicate wafer by femtosecond laser writing method. The splitters show zero insertion loss within the experimental error, bandwidth of 20−60 nm and low imbalance < 0.5 dB. Their footprint scales exponentially with the waveguide separation, which can be reduced to the limit of mode confinement. Remarkably, the splitting ratio can be wavelength and array-length tuned. The proposed splitters offer new possibilities for path-entanglement generation, multipath interferometery on chip [6] and spatial mode multiplexing [7].

AB - Rapidly increasing demand for higher data bandwidths has motivated exploration of new communication channels based on spatially multiplexed in-fibre and on-chip coupled light guides. However, the conventionally used periodically arranged coupled waveguides display complicated light propagation patterns, ranging from quasiperiodic to nearly chaotic. Taking a different approach, we spectrally engineer interwaveguide coupling to instigate self-imaging of the input light state at the array output and thus enable construction of novel high-fidelity interconnects. Simple implementation via modulation of the interwaveguide separations makes these interconnects realizable in all fabrication platforms. Their competitive advantages are negligible crosstalk-induced information loss, high density that exceeds the current standards by an order of magnitude, and compatibility with both classical and quantum information encoding schemes. Moreover, the wavelength-dependent self-imaging opens up new possibilities for wavelength and spatial division demultiplexing. The proposed analytical designs are supported by extensive numerical simulations of silicon-on-insulator, silicon nitride and silica glass waveguide arrays, and a statistical feasibility study. © 2023 Elsevier Ltd

AB - Recently we have witnessed experimental realization of a Majorana zero-mode bound at vortex distortion induced in bipartite hexagonal photonic lattices. Here, we address an open question of the impact of nonlinearity on the zero-mode dynamics by theoretically investigating the abilities of topologically protected zero-modes to guide, couple and lase light in the presence of nonlinear effects. Light-intensity related nonlinearity enters the scene through a local nonlinear lattice response and driving properties: saturable nonlinear gain and linear loss. We demonstrate an efficient steady zero-mode lasing regime by managing the lattice and driving parameters. Obtained results open up possibilities for design of new topological lasers in length-scalable photonic platforms, such as multicore optical fibers. © 2023 Elsevier B.V.

AB - Optical fibre sensors have attracted much attention as noninvasive electrically immune multiparameter diagnostic tools. Optical fibre gratings - resonant structures inside fibres, enable localized and distributed high-precision measurement schemes for the use in cardiology, pulmonology, prosthetics, obstetrics, etc. Particular niche market is reserved for broadband LPG sensors, which expel light from the fibre core to the cladding and thus enable sensitive measurement of the external refractive index and curvature. With the new costcutting LPG fabrication methods on the raise the question of the source and detector cost gets into focus. While the broadband coherent sources are usually used in laboratory, the source and spectrum analyser costs are prohibitive for many field applications. In this paper, we evaluate the performance and cost-benefit of the incoherent source application. The sensor performance is assessed in terms of sensing precision and signal-to-noise signal quality for broadband and lateral edge sensing schemes. It is sufficient for basic heart and respiration rate monitoring, but fails to satisfy stricter requirements for medical diagnostics.

AB - Photonic integrated circuits (PICs) are a promising route towards the next generation of classical and quantum information technologies. The main challenges before their widespread implementation are achievements of the competitive footprint, speed and number of simultaneous operations. This translates into requirements for miniaturization, broad bandwidth and extensive spatial and wavelength multiplexing. Current PIC designs commonly rely on directional couplers for operations and waveguides for information transfer. However, their miniaturization potential is limited by the trade-off between losses and bend radii in the former case and the crosstalk between densely packed waveguides in the latter case. On the other hand, operationally successful nanophotonic inverse designs are achieved only with substantial time and energy resources per device [1,2]. Here, we present and discuss an innovative solution for design of PICs which utilizes the linear crosstalk between waveguides [3]. We demonstrate construction of interconnects, couplers, interferometers, filters and dichroic splitters [4-6]. As the only fundamental assumption is the linear coupling between waveguides, these designs are applicable to all photonic fabrication platforms. We show components in glass, silicon nitride and silicon-on-insulator, and offer strategies for optimization of their footprint and bandwidth. The concept has been experimentally validated by fabrication of equal power splitters in glass. The optimization capability was proven by the achieved negligible insertion loss, large bandwidth and footprint scalability [7]. The proposed PICs are highly cost effective. Our simple semi-analytical design algorithm ensures efficient design, 20-100 times faster than the competing nanodesigns [1,2], and production realizable by any waveguide fabrication technique. Finally, we show that the quantum walk through the proposed linearly coupled waveguide arrays offers numerous possibilities for exploitation of qudits and construction of quantum logic gates.

AB - Efficiently achieving platform nonspecific designs with multiple functional requirements, such as arbitrary splitting ratio, low insertion losses, broad bandwidth, and small footprint, poses a significant challenge in the inverse design of optical Splitters. Traditional designs often fall short in meeting all the necessary criteria, while more successful nanophotonic inverse designs often demand substantial time and energy resources per device. Here, we present an efficient inverse design algorithm which provides universal designs of Splitters compliant with all the above constraints and offers significantly greater throughput compared to nanophotonic inverse design. To demonstrate the effectiveness of our method, we designed Splitters with various splitting ratios and fabricated 1×N power Splitters using direct laser writing in a borosilicate platform, which shows zero loss within marginal error, competitive imbalance of < 0.5 dB and a broad bandwidth range of 20 − 60 nm around 640 nm. Notably, our designs can be easily tuned to achieve different splitting ratios. Furthermore, we discussed the scalability of the Splitter footprint.

AB - One of the simplest models for which topological features can be defined is the one-dimensional SSH (Su–Schrieffer–Heeger) model. It can be realized in photonics as a waveguide array with alternating values of coupling constants. Mathematically, the light propagation through the waveguide array is modeled by the Schrödinger equation using tight-binding approximation (coupling exists only between neighboring waveguides).By tuning ratio between the coupling constants between the neighboring sites in the lattice,a topological phase transition can be induced. We investigate whether we could change the topological characteristics of the array by adding "defects". The defect is represented by an additional waveguide inserted between the already existing waveguides. On top of that, we add local cubic (Kerr-type) nonlinearity to those waveguides and investigate the dynamical localization and topological phenomena in the lattice

AB - Recently, the first experimental realization of a zero-mode associated with a topological defect in the bulk of a 2D graphene-like photonic lattice by introducing a vortex-like distortion is presented in [1]. The result of the distortion is the creation of a very robust mode localized in the vicinity of the vortex core. Here, we focus on finite bipartite armchair hexagonal-shaped lattice with a Kekule vortex-like distortion and numerically investigate the impact of distortion phase on the lattice eigenvalue spectrum. The substantial robustness of zero-mode indicated a possibility for efficient lasing by inducing the proper lattice pumping. Proposing different distortion phases, we are probing the lasing zero-mode from noisy background by tuning the saturable gain and linear loss driving parameters. The idea is to find the optimal parameter regimes to drive efficient and steady lasing zero-mode, which can be experimentally utilized for realizing novel type of photonic lasers

AB - Goal: Noise on recorded electrocardiographic (ECG) signals may affect their clinical interpretation. Electromyographic (EMG) noise spectrally coincides with the QRS complex, which makes its removal particularly challenging. The problem of evaluating the noise-removal techniques has commonly been approached by algorithm testing on the contaminated ECG signals constructed ad hoc as an additive mixture of a noise-free ECG signal and noise. Consequently, there is an absence of a unique/standard database for testing and comparing different denoising methods. We present a SimEMG database recorded by a novel acquisition method that allows for direct recording of the genuine EMG-noise-free and -contaminated ECG signals. The database is available as open source.

AB - In recent years, short pulse lasers have made massive progress and space-ready femtosecond laser systems are under development [1]. Moreover, employing time-domain spectroscopy techniques to identify planetary minerals by their spectroscopic fingerprints in the infrared and terahertz frequency range can have technological advantages over conventional spectroscopic techniques such as Fourier-Transform Infrared or Raman spectroscopy. The advantages are compactness, the possibility to replace bulky optical components by electro-optic/acousto-optic photonic techniques and the potential to be chip-integrable. We focus on one particular time-domain technique, coherent phonon spectroscopy (CPS), which is sensitive to Raman-active modes. Here, CPS is demonstrated in single-color operation and thus the simplicity and its insensitivity to fluorescence background add to the advantages of this technique.

Remarkably, the splitters can be tuned to achieve different splitting ratios. We further demonstrate scaling of the splitter footprint and apply the universal design to silicon nitride and silicon-on-insulator platforms to achieve 1 × 5 splitters with the footprints as small as 3.3 µm × 8 µm and 2.5 µm × 10.3 µm, respectively. AB - Multiarm interferometers can enhance measurement precision and provide multiparameter capability to the measurement. Their realisation requires multiport beam splitters, which has been a long-standing challenge in free-space and integrated optics. Here, we propose a new type of multiport interferometers suitable for implementation on optical chips. Their prospective advantages over the standard directional-coupler architectures: an arbitrary number of arms, planar architecture and two orders of magnitude reduction in footprint, are achieved by the layout based exclusively on the finite modulated photonic lattices. The inverse design of photonic lattices is facilitated by restricting the light propagation to periodic patterns. The corresponding interferometer model predicts the maximum $$1/\sqrt{N}$$sensitivity scaling with the number of arms N. While the presented design solutions are ubiquitous to all implementations, the advantages are discussed in both the low and high refractive-index contrast platforms. Finally, we provide an outlook on the possibilities for the interferometer applications in distributed classical and quantum measurements.

AB - In the present work, we study the nonlinear dynamics of microtubules, the basic components of the eukaryotic cytoskeleton. We introduce a two-component model describing tangential oscillations of dimers. A crucial nonlinear differential equation is solved using continuum approximation. We show that the dynamics of microtubules can be explained in terms of kink and antikink solitary waves. We used two mathematical procedures, that is the tangent hyperbolic function method and, more general, the simplest equation method. It is shown that both procedures bring about equal solutions. © 2021

AB - Solid-state reaction between BaTiO3and Fe2O3was used to produce a multiferroic heterostructure composite. Commercial BaTiO3and Fe(NO3)3•9H2O were suspended in ethanol for 30 minutes in an ultrasound bath. The prepared mixture was thermally processed at 300°C for 6 h. Sintering at 1300 °C for 1 h resulted in a mixture of different phases, BaTiO3, BaFe12O19and Ba12Ti28Fe15O84, which were confirmed by x-ray powder diffraction. A dense microstructure with a small volume fraction of closed porosity was indicated by the scanning electron microscopy, while a homogeneous distribution of Fe ions over BaTiO3phase was visible from energy dispersive spectroscopy mapping. Doping of BaTiO3with Fe2O3resulted in formation of magnetic hexaferrite phases, as confirmed by dielectric measurements that showed a broadened maximum of the permittivity measured as a function of temperature. © 2021 Authors. AB - Ultrafast-laser inscribed optical memories have been considered as a high-density low-energy-consumption alternative to the magnetization-based memories. The optical memories are based on laser-induced material modifications resulting in the refractive index change. The long-term stability of such modifications has been indicated by subjecting them to the accelerated aging by annealing at elevated temperatures. Here, the first direct evidence is provided of the durability of the type II refractive index change in BK7 glass. The investigation was performed for over 27 months at room temperature. The results show the existence of the laser pulse intensity threshold above which the magnitude of the index change does not deteriorate with time and, hence, is suitable for optical memory, photonic crystal and fibre-grating writing. © 2019

AB - The THz beamline at FLASH, DESY, provides both tunable (1–300 THz) narrow-bandwidth (∼10%) and broad-bandwidth intense (up to 150 uJ) THz pulses delivered in 1 MHz bursts and naturally synchronized with free-electron laser X-ray pulses. Combination of these pulses, along with the auxiliary NIR and VIS ultrashort lasers, supports a plethora of dynamic investigations in physics, material science and biology. The unique features of the FLASH THz pulses and the accelerator source, however, bring along a set of challenges in the diagnostics of their key parameters: pulse energy, spectral, temporal and spatial profiles. Here, these challenges are discussed and the pulse diagnostic tools developed at FLASH are presented. In particular, a radiometric power measurement is presented that enables the derivation of the average pulse energy within a pulse burst across the spectral range, jitter-corrected electro-optical sampling for the full spectro-temporal pulse characterization, spatial beam profiling along the beam transport line and at the sample, and a lamellar grating based Fourier transform infrared spectrometer for the on-line assessment of the average THz pulse spectra. Corresponding measurement results provide a comprehensive insight into the THz beamline capabilities.

AB - Objective: The ventilators involved in non-invasive mechanical ventilation commonly provide ventilator support via a facemask. The interface of the mask with a patient promotes air leaks that cause errors in the feedback information provided by a pneumatic sensor and hence patient-ventilator asynchrony with multiple negative consequences. Our objective is to test the possibility of using chest-wall motion measured by an optical fibre-grating sensor as a more accurate non-invasive ventilator triggering mechanism. Approach: The basic premise of our approach is that the measurement accuracy can be improved by using a triggering signal that precedes pneumatic triggering in the neuro-ventilatory coupling sequence. We propose a technique that uses the measurement of chest-wall curvature by a long-period fibre-grating sensor. The sensor was applied externally to the rib-cage and interrogated in the lateral (edge) filtering scheme. The study was performed on 34 healthy volunteers. Statistical data analysis of the time lag between the fibregrating sensor and the reference pneumotachograph was preceded by the removal of the unwanted heartbeat signal by wavelet transform processing. Main results: The results show a consistent fibregrating signal advance with respect to the standard pneumatic signal by (230 +/- 100) ms in both the inspiratory and expiratory phases. We further show that heart activity removal yields a tremendous improvement in sensor accuracy by reducing it from 60 ml to 0.3 ml. Significance: The results indicate that the proposed measurement technique may lead to a more reliable triggering decision. Its imperviousness to air leaks, non-invasiveness, low-cost and ease of implementation offer good prospects for applications in both clinical and homecare ventilation.

abstract = "Objective: The ventilators involved in non-invasive mechanical ventilation commonly provide ventilator support via a facemask. AB - The faithful state transfer is an important requirement in the construction of classical and quantum computers. While the highspeed transfer is realized by optical-fibre interconnects, its implementation in integrated optical circuits is affected by cross-talk. The cross-talk between densely packed optical waveguides limits the transfer fidelity and distorts the signal in each channel, thus severely impeding the parallel transfer of states such as classical registers, multiple qubits and qudits. Here, we leverage on the suitably engineered cross-talk between waveguides to achieve the parallel transfer on optical chip. Waveguide coupling coefficients are designed to yield commensurate eigenvalues of the array and hence, periodic revivals of the input state. While, in general, polynomially complex, the inverse eigenvalue problem permits analytic solutions for small number of waveguides. We present exact solutions for arrays of up to nine waveguides and use them to design realistic buses for multi-(qu)bit and qudit transfer. Advantages and limitations of the proposed solution are discussed in the context of available fabrication techniques.

energetskog spektra neutrona tokom gama spektrometrijskih merenja.
AB - Determination of neutron spectra in the Ge-detector during low-level gamma
spectroscopy measurements is of great importance. Thus, in this paper we analyzed the
method for the determination of neutron energy spectra present during measurements
with HPGe detectors. This method is based on using the deconvolution procedure. It
requires the knowledge of neutron induced gamma activities of Ge isotopes and the
cross section data for the neutron reactions of interest. This approach was tested with
measurements that used the fission neutron source 252Cf placed in proximity of the
HPGe detector. Results show that this method can provide reliable data about the shape
of neutron energy spectrum during gamma spectroscopy measurements.

AB - We address the stability and dynamics of eigenmodes in linearly shaped strings (dimers, trimers, tetramers, and pentamers) built of droplets in a binary Bose-Einstein condensate (BEC). The binary BEC is composed of atoms in two pseudo-spin states with attractive interactions, dressed by properly arranged laser fields, which induce the (pseudo-) spin-orbit (SO) coupling. We demonstrate that the SO-coupling terms help to create eigenmodes of particular types in the strings. Dimer, trimer, and pentamer eigenmodes of the linear system, which correspond to the zero eigenvalue (EV, alias chemical potential) extend into the nonlinear ones, keeping an exact analytical form, while tetramers do not admit such a continuation, because the respective spectrum does not contain a zero EV. Stability areas of these modes shrink with the increasing nonlinearity. Besides these modes, other types of nonlinear states, which are produced by the continuation of their linear counterparts corresponding to some nonzero EVs, are found in a numerical form (including ones for the tetramer system). They are stable in nearly entire existence regions in trimer and pentamer systems, but only in a very small area for the tetramers. Similar results are also obtained, but not displayed in detail, for hexa-and septamers.

AB - Here, we present a method of respiratory volumes monitoring using a single fiber-grating sensor of bending. Measurements are conducted using simple monochromatic interrogation scheme that relies on a photodiode measurement of the power transmitted through a long period grating (LPG) sensor at fixed wavelength. Good sensor accuracy in measurements of tidal and minute respiratory volumes for different types of breathing is achieved.
